To Maclaren, preparing messages was hard work, He often said he could never prepare sermons while wearing slippers: He always wore his outdoor

people.

ired with divine flame

Preachers are preeminently God’s leaders. They are primarily responsible for the condition of the church. They shape its character, give tone and direction to its life. The preacher is to lay out in prayer for his people. Prayer is the eminent

characteristics of strong leadership. The preacher must be a man given to prayer.

ospel can not be projected by a prayerless preacher. Preaching never edifies a prayerless soul. Christ knows nothing of prayerless Christians. The more the preachers eyes are opened to the nature, responsibility, and difficulties of his work, the more he will see, and if he be a true preacher the more he will feel, the necessity of prayer; not only the increasing demand to pray himself, but to call on others to help him by their prayers.

BEFORE. For large conference give them a copy of the handouts beforehand so they can take notes and follow along.

DURING. You may want to distribute papers at the point when you’ll be using the document.

AFTER. Rule of thumb is to give out handouts at the end of the presentation. So they will be all ears to you.

igh and Divine Art of Intercession

“The preacher who has never learned in the school of Christ the high and divine art of

intercession for his people he will never learn the art of preaching, though homiletics be

poured into him by ton, and though he must be the most gifted genius in the sermon-making and

sermon delivery.”

ill.

Preachings that kill.Preaching is not the performance of an hour. It is the outflow of a life. The man makes the preacher.

God must make the man. Dead men give out dead sermons, and dead sermons kill.

Everything depends on the spiritual character of the preacher.

ife. A professional ministry is a heartless ministry.

When salary plays a great part in the ministry, the heart plays little part. We may make preaching our business, and not put our hearts in the business. He who puts self to the front in his preaching puts heart to the rear. He who does not sow his heart in the study will never reap a harvest for God.

REHEARSING

Design experts recommend that presenters spend the majority of their time thinking, sketching and scripting.

Nancy Duarte recommends that a presenter spend 90 hours creating an hour long presentation with 30 slides.

But only one third of that time is spent building slides. Another third is rehearsing, but the first third is spent collecting ideas, organizing ideas, and sketching the story.

penings.

1.Startling Statement - This could be a statistic or statement that immediately gets them to sit up and focus on the topic. Shock appeal is more effective in persuading the audience to understand the seriousness of your position.2.Surprising Action - Do something unexpected. Act clumsy when using technology. Then regain composure and ask the audience for their reaction. Drive home the point that your platform is easy to use and you will avoid looking foolish when you use technology that works.3. Humor - People love a good laugh. It relaxes them, makes them feel good, and breaks the ice. Don't tell jokes unless you are a really good joke teller but do use humorous statements and anecdotes.4. Purpose Statement - This is a direct way of letting them know your point. This opening technique is a good choice when there are time constraints or when your audience has a short attention span. For example, "In today's presentation, I am going to explain the four styles of leadership and why you must think of yourselves not as managers but as leaders."

Page 119: A-Z in Public Speaking Upgraded

5. Begin with the End - Occasionally, you may start with your conclusion and then build your case taking them from beginning to end. By starting with the end result or bottom line you capture attention and can lead them to your way of thinking.6. Ask a Question - The speaker begins with a rhetorical question that makes the audience think. When posing a question make sure it is meaningful to the audience. Otherwise it will have little effect.7. Quote - A well-known quote can colorfully introduce the point you want to make. This is especially effective for business presentations when you want to acknowledge an industry leader or in house expert. You will need to skillfully weave the quote into your topic.8. Visual aid - Visual aids can be very effective in focusing attention. Cartoon strips work well as do thought-provoking pictures or props.9. Personal Experience - This technique builds good will and creates a connection with the audience. It helps you relate on a personal level. Many comedians take every day personal experiences and exaggerate them. The audience can relate because they have experienced it.10. Anecdote - A short story is a powerful way to open or close a presentation. An anecdote or story can help to lower the listeners' defenses. Stories draw the audience in to the content. But the story must lead into the presentation topic quickly or the point will be lost.
