Preschool NewsPreschool classes resume on Tuesday, January 2nd at 9:00 am.

Preschool registration for 2017/2018:   We will begin taking registrations for the 2018/2019 school year on April 1st. This gives us the chance to assess and give recommendations to parents of the current class. We require a $25.00 registration fee and completed form to hold a child's place in class. These can be picked up in the church office.

Weather Closures: School closures happen quickly in our area, whether they are due to power out, snow, ice, or flooding. Our main goal is to make sure that your child is safe and that may mean that we close preschool until conditions improve.

Peace Lutheran Preschool parallels, as much as possible, the Chehalis School District calendar year. When Chehalis Schools close or have a late arrival, Peace Lutheran Preschool will be closed.

When severe weather conditions are present please use the resources below.

The following radio stations have local school closure information;KITI 1420amKELA 1470amKACS 90.5fmLive95  95fm

Seattle morning news channels also have closures;Komo 4King 5Kiro 7Fox 13

Here is a webpage online that will have information, usually posted around 6:00 am;http://www.flashalertseattle.net/

I will also post on our Facebook page as soon as I find out if preschool will be canceled. If for some reason class is canceled and the information is not available on radio, tv, or online. You may call the church office after 8:00 am if you have any questions: 360-748-4108

If preschool is open and you ever feel that the drive to preschool will be dangerous, please stay home and stay safe. We will see you when the weather conditions are better. Your safety is what is most important.

The word “epiphany” comes from a Greek word meaning “manifestation” or “being made known.” In other words, Jesus was “made known” to all people simply by being born.

The Reformation 270.6MacKenzie, Cameron A.

The Reformation provides a richly illustrated and engagingly written overview of the amazing time of change and renewal in the Christian Church during the 16th century and helps the reader sort through the complex chain of events that shook both church and state to their very foundations. The historical photos and facts bear witness to the earth-changing events and players in the "theological century" - including the famous Martin Luther and Henry VIII, but also encompassing the other lesser-known personalities of the Reformation era.

Closed Communion? 264Harrison, Matthew C. and John T. Pless, eds.

The faithful practice of closed Communion is challenged in our day both culturally and ecclesiastically. As Western culture careens down a path of individualism and autonomy, the privatization of faith leads many to regard participation in the Sacrament as a matter of personal entitlement. The issue of admission to the Lord's Supper is neither a matter of personal entitlement nor based on notions of being a welcoming and affirming church. Rather, it entails questions regarding both the nature of the Sacrament and of the character of the Church. The essays brought together in this book are both old and new. Taken together, they bear testimony to a common Lutheran conviction and serve to assist both pastors and laity in understanding the biblical and confessional basis for closed Communion.

Youth Group NewsThe Youth Group went Christmas caroling on December 17th along with some members of the congregation; the Freeman family, Maggie Howsden, Samuel Howsden, Chris Riley, Marlene Farrell, Dick and Marti Piesch, George Schaefer, and Michelle Schaefer. We visited and sang for Jayne and Moni Poppe, Lee Schmitt, Ray Poppe, Louise Runyon, Margaret Schwarzkopf, and Providence Place. We sang a lot of Christmas carols and hopefully brought some Christmas cheer to those we visited.

After the caroling the Youth had their Christmas party. They enjoyed a dinner together prepared by Sarah and Alyssa Ackerson, exchanged white elephant gifts, and unwrapped a saran wrapped ball.

The next Youth Group meeting will be January 14th, 2018 at 12:15. At this meeting we will talk about Super Bowl Subs, fund raisers, youth group activities for the year, and this year’s Higher Things Conference.

Higher Things Observations Higher Things Conference

“Here I Stand”Bozeman, MontanaJuly 15th – 22nd 2017

My Higher Things experience was amazing in the way that it strengthened my faith, taught me more about Lutheranism, and was plain fun. Quite possibly one of my favorite things at Higher Things were the breakaway sessions. Breakaway sessions are little classes that you can attend to learn more about a specific subject. I also enjoyed Compline, a late night prayer that all of us would pray together before we went to bed. It’s really incredible knowing that thousands of other kids your age believe in the same thing as you. Getting to see Montana and Yellowstone was wonderful as well, and I am thankful to have gone. Thank you to our congregation! Sophia DeTray

Looking ahead—start planning now.

In the spring, we will be offering Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University classes.

Classes meet for nine weeks and are led by a volunteer coordinator.”

The information and principles presented in the class are helpful whatever your stage in life, but they are especially helpful for younger adults just starting out. Avoid common pitfalls and get started on a firm footing for a more stable and peaceful financial situation whatever your calling in life.

Urban Legends ConcerningLuther and His Hymns

There is a widespread but totally unfounded myth concerning Martin Luther’s attitude about the fitness of popular music for the worship setting. The myth takes various forms. Here is a sampling: “Luther converted popular tunes into hymns for use in church;” “Luther wrote hymns to drinking songs;” “‘A Mighty Fortress’ is based on a tavern song;” “Luther said, ‘Why should the Devil have all the good music?’” While this myth is widespread and widely espoused even by those who it would seem should know about such things, (I remember being taught this myth by my professors during my undergraduate years.) there is absolutely no evidence to its truth. In fact, there is much evidence to the contrary.

The easiest place to begin is with Luther, himself. Volume 53 of the American Edition of Luther’s Works contains every hymn Luther wrote along with helpful commentary. Not a single one of those hymns is said to be derived from songs sung in taverns.

In fact, when once, Luther did borrow a tune from a “tavern song,” he quickly thought better of it and wrote the hymn its own tune:

Martin Luther is one of the most misunderstood church fathers with respect to the use of music in the church. Claims that he used tavern tunes for his hymns are used in defense of a music practice that freely accepts worldly associations. Such conclusions bear no resemblance to Luther’s writings on the subjects of worship and music. In fact, Luther’s actions teach us quite a different lesson. In his search for the right tune for his text “Vom Himmel hoch, da komm’ ich her” [“From Heaven Above to Earth I Come”] , Luther learned about the power of worldly associations. According to the Luther scholar Markus Jenny, Luther’s first wedding of this text with a tune was “a classic example of the failure of a contrafacta.” He set it to a secular dance song that begins, “I step eagerly to this dance.” The dance and tune were closely associated with a Christmas wreath ceremony that was often held in taverns. Luther found the secular associations to be so strong that he eventually wrote a fresh tune that was free of worldly associations. He then indicated on the manuscript that this new melody was to be used in the Sunday service and with children. Luther’s modification of this beloved hymn is indication of his sensitivity to the harmful power of worldly associations in the worship practice of the church. [Quoted from Richard

C. Resch, “Music: Gift of God or Tool of the Devil,” Logia 3 (Eastertide/April 1994) no. 2: 36 where he references Markus Jenny, Luthers geistliche Lieder und Kirchengesaenge (Koeln: Boehlau Verlag, 1985)]

Martin Luther was a gifted hymn writer and a musically inclined individual. While he certainly would have known the popular secular music of his time, he recognized that there is a difference between what is appropriate for musical entertainment and what is appropriate for worship. Where Luther, in his writings, does address music, he sings the praises of contemporary composers of sacred music such as Josquin des Prez and Ludwig Senfl. He did not, it seems, borrow from the tavern to sing in the church.

Luther recognized well-crafted music from the best composers of his time. He looked to these composers, and to his colleague Johann Walter, for the music of the young Lutheran church. He did not look to the popular culture of his time as a source for the music of the church. Those who would press upon today’s church the music of the popular culture around us must do so without invoking the name of Martin Luther. To look to Luther for support is, at best, simply misguided, at worst, intellectually dishonest.
