Cemetery Commemoration June 7, 2:00 p.m. (Rain Date: June 14) at the Wakefield CemeteryFor many years we have had a Memorial Service at Wakefield Cemetery on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. This year, the holiday of Shavuot falls on that weekend so we are unable to have this event then. Also, many people were unable to attend due to the long holiday weekend.

The Cemetery Committee has decided to change the format of this service. We will give details of this via email blasts. We hope to make this a family friendly celebration and commemoration of our cemetery.

From the Executive Director

This past year I have had the pleasure of working side by side with Kathy Weinman, and as her tenure as the President of our congregation comes to an end, I want to thank her for all that she has done. I can attest to her commitment towards ensuring a vibrant future for our congregation. I am sincerely appreciative of the sacrifices that Kathy and her family have made during her time at the helm. She has shown tremendous leadership on many fronts and has never shied away from a challenge nor has she overlooked any opportunity to advance our mission. I congratulate Kathy on a job well done, and look forward to seeing her join our impressive Past President cohort. I also want to thank Rabbi Morrison for all that he has done for Temple Israel during the last fourteen years. His portfolio of accomplishments is beyond impressive, and his lasting impression on our congregation will be strong. Please join us at Qabbalat Shabbat on May 15 as we celebrate Rabbi Morison and his achievements.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on April 11 at our annual Stepping Out gala. Because of your support and the leadership of our committee, we raised $50,000 towards the Friends Annual Fund. This year’s appeal will continue until the end of June, and for the first time, we have an opportunity for your funds to be matched. I encourage you to make a gift and take advantage of our generous donors who are looking to double the impact of your contributions. Finally, I invite you to attend this year’s annual meeting on June 11. We will be installing our new leaders and thanking those who have reached the end of their terms. This will also be an opportunity for you to hear more about our groundbreaking TI Tent Talk program and get an update from the Rabbinic Search Committee. I look forward to seeing you there.

Honoring Your Loved OnesA contribution of $ 650 to the Temple Israel Endowment Fund will secure a plaque in either the Alcove or on the Menorah. A way to remember a loved one is to dedicate a memorial plaque in his or her memory. We have two areas where that can be done. The Alice G. Winn Memorial Menorah is located along the rear wall of the Sanctuary. Those memorial plaques are made from glass. The Harry N. and Estelle S. Gorin Memorial Alcove surround one of the entrances door to the Sanctuary. Those plaques are made from bronze. Once a plaque is ordered, Temple Israel will perpetually read the name of the deceased during Shabbat services on Friday evening and Saturday morning of the anniversary of death. Family members will receive notification of this date in advance of the yahrzeit. All names on plaques are included in the annual Yom Kippur Book of Remembrance distributed to the Congregation on Yom Kippur. Due to financial and artistic restraints, the glass plaques purchased for the Winn Memorial Menorah can only be installed once a year, in the summer prior to the High Holidays. The brass plaques can be installed in the Gorin Memorial year round.

Honor Them: Temple Israel’s Women of Reform Judaism

“May the Shechinah, the Holy Presence, that brings forth the female in the Divine,

spread Her wings over you and protect you.May Her light shine upon you with compassion,

And may Her countenance illumine your livesWith wholeness and peace.”Leila Gal Berner, “A Blessing,”

in The Torah: A Women’s Commentary (2005)

I write this column shortly before Temple Israel’s special Qabbalat Shabbat service honoring the Women of Reform Judaism — the Sisterhood. Since its beginning as Temple Israel’s Ladies Auxiliary Society in 1884 and its organization as the Women’s Society in 1903, WRJ has played a central role in the life of our Temple and, as a founding and active member of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods, in liberal Jewish communities throughout North America. Through the hard work and creativity of Paula Folkman, Sandy Perrin and B-J. Scheff, an exhibit of WRJ’s history and its many contributions to TI – 123 Years of Sisterhood and Service – is now on display in the Wyner Museum.

As recounted in our Temple history, Becoming American Jews1, the Women’s Society was established in 1903 “to develop the solidarity of the congregation, to co-operate with the pulpit in every way, and to stress the study and fostering of Jewish ideals.” At that time, women had few opportunities within Temple Israel. It wasn’t until 1977 that our by-laws were modified to permit both spouses to vote in congregational elections; 1988, that TI elected its first female president (Fran Putnoi); and 1990, that we hired our first female rabbi (Rabbi Zecher). For decades, WRJ was the main vehicle for women’s participation in and support of the life of our synagogue.

Throughout its history, the Sisterhood has served several significant roles. First, it allowed women to support the religious and educational activities of the temple. To this day, WRJ’s Special Education Fund provides assistance for special education at TI. Indeed, WRJ funded the first program integrating children with special needs into a Jewish religious school. Second, from the start WRJ led the temple in service to the broader community. In 1914, for example, the Sisterhood established a school in the North End to educate Jewish immigrant children. More recently, it has raised funds and provided other assistance for victims of domestic violence. Finally, WRJ has provided a social outlet and community for our women members. Former TI President Justin Wyner recently recalled that his “earliest memories as a child at Temple Israel are of my mother, grandmother and aunts all going to Sisterhood lunches.” Current president, B-J. Scheff, describes how, at each event, the women who attended would “give pennies, nickels and dimes” to support their causes – for a total (with substantially larger donations) that is estimated to exceed $4.7 million in today’s dollars.

Like other chapters particularly in urban areas, last year the leaders of WRJ decided to wind down the Sisterhood’s activities in 2015. It was a difficult decision, caused by the decline in participation in recent years. The women of Temple Israel haven’t disappeared, but they’ve become involved through other pathways – the Board and committees, study groups, Torah Study, TILLI, women’s spirituality, Ohel Tzedek and much more. But the Sisterhood leaves us a rich and enduring legacy. In addition to the funds that will continue to support the temple, the WRJ set an example for our community. As the exhibit states, “They share a deep connection with each other, a commitment to their faith, and a concern for their fellow human beings.”

The Greatest (Temple) Israel Family Adventure with Rabbi Elaine ZecherDecember 23, 2015 – January 3, 2016

There will be two informational sessions about the trip on Sunday, May 3 at 9:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. You are invited to join your Temple Israel friends on an amazing adventure! Be prepared to dig in ancient ruins, taste colorful and diverse foods, encounter the sand, the sea, and the stars, and walk through ancient and modern history (sometimes on the same path!). You’ll be riding in jeeps, on bikes, on horses, and yes, a very comfortable bus. These are just some of the amazing and fantastic experiences we will have together. Our incoming Board President Chris Noe and his family will be there, and we hope you can be too!

We invite you to come and learn more and see if this trip is the right fit for your family.

“Deeds of Kindness Weigh as Much as All the Commandments” (Talmud Peah l:l)

The Caring Community Needs Your Help! The Caring Community continues to actively reach out to fellow congregants in times of sorrow and joy—but the dedicated committee needs more volunteers. This hardworking, compassionate group would be more effective if it had more members to share the tasks. The Caring Community operates beneath the “radar screen” thus their many wonderful mitzvot often go unnoticed and are sometimes taken for granted. Of course no recognition is necessary if you connect just once to a fellow congregant in need you will feel rewarded.

If you have time to reach out to one or two TI congregants who have lost a loved one, welcomed a child into their family, or need a meal delivered during an illness, YOU can become a participant in the Caring Community. You will find that the rewards of this participation are as great for the volunteer as for the recipient.

Please join us in this outreach effort so we can reach those who are in need of an act of kindness. We are grateful to those who help to make phone calls, meal deliveries (food does not have to be home cooked) write notes etc…These committed congregants help to make Temple Israel a community that really cares about each other. Please remember No one person can do everything but that each of us can do something.

Thank you in advance for considering to help!

Aging: Celebrations and ChallengesTuesday, May 26, 7:00 p.m.

In the most recent program of Aging: Celebrations and Challenges, Rabbi Ronne Friedman led us in a deeply moving discussion about grief and how we can ground our modern experience of this universal human emotion in Jewish theology. As a follow up to that program, we are pleased to announce that Rabbi Earl Grollman will speak to us about grief as we struggle to cope with it in our day to day lives. His talk is entitled “What I have learned from working with the bereaved”. Rabbi Grollman, who began his career as an assistant rabbi at Temple Israel, is Rabbi Emeritus of the Beth El Temple Center in Belmont, and a nationally recognized expert in the field of thanatology, the study of death, dying and grief. A certified Death Educator and Counselor; he was cited as “Hero of the Heartland” for his work with families and volunteers at the Oklahoma City Bombing. Dr. Grollman has spoken at many colleges, clergy institutes, seminaries, physicians’ forums, and hospital nursing associations. He has also appeared on television and radio, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, Children’s Journal, All Things Considered and Mr. Rodger’s Neighborhood. Recently he was featured on National Public Radio’s, End of Life series in the roundtable discussion on grief and bereavement. Dr. Grollman is the author of eleven books on the subject of grief, bereavement and death. Dr. Grollman’s TI presentation will focus on what he has gleaned from decades of scholarly inquiry and experience caring for those who have lost loved ones and friends.

Families with Young Children

Join a Temple Israel Neighborhood Network! We are looking for your help with a new membership initiative at Temple Israel—Neighborhood Networks. This grew out of many congregants saying they wished they knew other TI members who lived in their area—so the Membership Committee decided it was time to make this happen. These Networks are aimed at creating connections between current members, and also building a neighborhood setting through which prospective members can connect to TI.

The Membership Committee “pilot tested” Neighborhood Networks in Brookline, JP/Roslindale/West Roxbury, and the communities North of the Charles with initial meetings, Break Fasts after Yom Kippur, a Chanukah party, and “meet up” dinners. These events have been very successful and have attracted many current members and people curious about Temple Israel membership. There is a long list of great ideas that include book groups and movie clubs, Havdallah potluck dinners and gatherings in neighborhood sukkahs, jam sessions and meeting for a drink.

Now it’s time to really build up the current Neighborhood Networks through core teams that will plan and facilitate local gatherings and events. Core team members may work on just one gathering, or become part of an ongoing group of volunteers who brainstorm a few activities a year (hopefully 3 or 4 and maybe

more), and develop an outreach plan to connect with current and prospective TI members. The Membership Committee will provide all the logistical and other support the core teams need (back-up help with ideas, invitations, logistics, etc.).

Joining your neighborhood core team won’t be too much work, but it will be very meaningful. Please let us know if you can be a part of your Neighborhood Network core team – even for just one event. It’s an incredibly important (and fun!) initiative for the Temple, both for our current members and those members-yet-to be! Contact Julie Unger, Director of Membership and Engagement.

Wine and Apps, Technically Speaking…Several weeks ago, approximately thirty of us, 50 and 60 something’s expanded our technology app knowledge at the 477 Wine and Apps sharing event at Richard Kalish and Lis Keller’s home in Brookline. Even on a

cold March evening, there was warmth, levity, and mingling in the room. We were singles, couples, new members and long-time members. We engaged in great conversations and made new connections both personal and technological. Here’s a few helpful apps that will help make our lives more organized:

• Anylist - Easily create shopping lists you can share and sync

with family and friends• Vivino or Delectable - Never pick out a bad wine again. This

app allows you to take a picture of the label and you will receive a description of the wine and user reviews

• 7 Minute Workout - This one is kind of self-explanatory! • Nest - Control your thermostat from remote locations. Warm up your house!

We’d like to provide more in-home neighborhood gatherings per year, but with a different theme(i.e. wine and cheese tasting, chocolate pairing, Salon discussions, etc). If you would like to host a program or have an idea, we want to hear from you!

Temple Israel Bulletin8 May/June 2015

These past weeks I have been reflecting on why I am so bothered by my daughter’s decision not to keep kosher for Passover this year. Her explanation was simple: “I don’t believe in God, you tell me this never happened, I don’t need to eat matzah for a week to prove that I’m Jewish. You can’t make me do something I don’t believe in.”

She has a point, of course. She knows well that my parents never kept kosher. She knows I consider the Exodus story a myth. Why should she observe a ritual that has no meaning to her?

“She’s absolutely right,” is my mother’s less-than-helpful response. “I never made my kids keep kosher for Passover.” Thanks, Mom.

The truth is, despite my daughter’s “don’t want to, don’t have to, can’t make me” attitude she has a pretty strong Jewish identity and is emotionally connected to her Jewish community. Ultimately, I want her to continue nurturing her relationship with Judaism. I don’t want to see her become disillusioned with it as she matures.

Recent studies tell us the millennials are losing faith. Perhaps it’s because we have not given them enough to hold on to. Many supplemental Jewish schools devote inordinate educational hours to the bar/bat mitzvah service. But children today are sophisticated; they need to be challenged and engaged —not merely trained. We do a disservice to our students when we focus entirely on the end result and discount the pretty significant educational opportunities within the journey.

At TI we are setting our sights beyond the bar/bat mitzvah service. We want to provide our students with skills that will allow them to continue to grow and explore Judaism on their

own terms, well into their future. With that goal in mind, we focus much of our attention on a critical reading of Torah. Not only does this skill serve our students in their secular studies, but reading the Torah critically opens up multiple paths for education. Rabbis and scholars (both past and present) do a rather good job showing us just how much we can learn from even a single passage of Torah.

But critical reading also forces us to ask questions about the text itself. Why was it written, when was it written, what was going on in the world when it was written, whom was it written for, etc. When we succeed in wrapping text in context, it opens up an entirely new map of paths for our students to explore; one we hope will pique their curiosity for years to come. Further, by asking our students to read critically we are teaching them the art of questioning: asking, listening, responding and reconsidering are all building blocks of learning communities, and our students are learning to create these for themselves each time they set foot in class.

Raisin’ Awareness for Family Table For my Social Justice in Action project, I am trying to increase donations of peanut butter and raisins to Family Table, New England’s largest kosher food pantry. Temple Israel has promised to contribute 50 jars of peanut butter and 50 boxes of raisins each month. Other temples in Boston supply different foods to Family Table and with these groceries, each month, volunteers pack up

and deliver packages of food to families in need, based on their specific lists. Some of these families live right here in Brookline.

Family Table still needs your support! This spring, I am having a donation pledge raffle. When you pledge and contribute, you will earn a chance to win a $15 iTunes gift card. The raffle drawing will be held on the last day of religious school, Sunday May 31, at the final Raisin’ Awareness for Family Table PB & Raisin Sale this year. Each person can enter once per monthly contribution. Slips are available by the box in the atrium. Please remember Family Table when you do your grocery shopping. All brands of peanut butter and raisins are acceptable and the donation bin is in the Atrium, on Tzedakah Row.

Thank you to everyone in the community who has helped make my project successful this year through the peanut butter and raisin sales. Please see the thank you letter from Family Table posted near the entrance to the Temple.

The Story of Joseph

As I continue to prepare for my Bar Mitzvah this December, I am digging into my Torah Portion which funny enough is the story of Joseph! In this portion, Joseph predicts the future. The Travis Roy Foundation is also trying to predict the future by making life for people with spinal cord injuries better. So far, I have organized a bake sale; a hockey tournament; and a custom cupcake sale at a local cupcake bakery.

This work is important to me, because my friend Sam has a spinal cord injury. It feels good to help him and other people with spinal cord injuries. So far I have raised $1200 towards research and individual grants for adaptive equipment. My goal is $2500. One example of adaptive equipment is my friend Sam’s wheelchair that includes a reclining and levitating function to help with seeing and to keep Sam’s blood flowing correctly. Blood clots are something people with spinal cord injuries worry about a lot. In August, I will be playing in a whiffle ball tournament organized by the Travis Roy Foundation. If you would like to help me reach my fundraising goal, please donate online at http://shar.es/1WDpIH. Please click on my name, found on the right side of the page. Thank you.

“I felt like my feet were praying.”- Rabbi Abraham Joshua HeschelWalking to Make a Difference at the Mother’s Day Walk for Peace

Sunday, May 107:00 a.m. meet at TI

Our 5th grade families join with thousands of other citizens of greater Boston to demonstrate our support for families and friends of homicide victims. We will walk carrying the Torah with us as a testimony to Jewish teachings of kindness, compassion, and caring. We will walk with our Temple Israel banner and signs attesting to the hope that communities coming together are much stronger than individuals alone. Our presence matters and makes a difference. Rabbis Zecher and Soffer, as well as our 5th grade teachers, will march with us. We expect to be back at the Temple between 11:30-noon. Other members of the Temple community are invited to walk with us as well. For students unable to join us, they will have a class at the Temple. All students must be connected to a responsible adult for the walk. If a parent is unable to walk, please make arrangements for another parent to supervise that student.

For more information and to register: http://mothersdaywalk4peace.org. Select to join Team Temple Israel of Boston. Start your fundraising.

Author Talk! Tuesday, May 5, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

The WRJ & Library’s First Tuesday Book Group is delighted to present: Dale Stanten, who will speak on the topic: “Rising Above Circumstances,” as

relating to her memoir, The Hooker’s Daughter: A Boston Family’s Saga

In 1950s Jewish Boston, Dale’s mother established a home-based business as a prostitute to remedy her husband’s inability

to provide for his family. At age six, the author was answering the front door for johns. Neighbor children were forbidden to

play with her and even the Girl Scouts asked her to leave. What a terrible irony, in a family with so many strange and twisted

realities, her lesbian sister, “coming out” at age 16, was the only thing her parents focused on as contemptible.

The Hooker’s Daughter is a story of survival, driven by a strong will and an ability to extract positive qualities from a

dysfunctional life, punctuated by immoral and illegal behaviors. The author was able to reconcile the reality of her

environment with what she wished it to be. The resulting tenacity enabled Dale to cope with her terminally ill husband and

widowhood at age 37. Her unconditional love for her mother challenges the reader to examine beyond that which is socially

acceptable and identify that which is universal.

Ms. Stanten’s book is available at public libraries, and from book stores/online vendors. The library has several copies for sale

and to borrow. All temple members and their friends are welcome to come, and bring a bag lunch. Coffee, tea and dessert will

be served. There is no fee. RSVP by Tuesday April 28, to Ann Abrams at [email protected].

Spring SocialThe annual FJECC Spring Social is always a wonderful opportunity for parents, staff and teachers to come together and enjoy a festive evening. This year’s Spring Social, held on April 30, was a lovely event in celebration of the FJECC’s 21st anniversary. We enjoyed spending the evening together as a community. A special thank you is extended to our two wonderful coordinators and chairs of this event, Donna Frieze and Francine Rosenzweig.

ShavuotThis holiday commemorates receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai and the Festival of the First Harvest. It was customary for the Jewish people to bring their first fruits to the Temple in Jerusalem in observation of this springtime holiday. The FJECC children will follow the tradition of dressing in white for our Shavuot celebration, and will help fill baskets with first fruits of the season while they wait for Moses (our Religious School Director, Rabbi Jeremy Morrison) to come down from Mount Sinai and present us with the Torah!

Appreciation to Francine Rosenzweig, Outgoing FJECC Board PresidentOn behalf of all who have benefited from the wisdom that Francine has consistently provided in her role as president of our FJECC Board of Directors, a huge TODAH RABAH! Francine has devoted many hours to this important role, making herself available whenever she was needed to provide essential guidance and assistance. We greatly appreciate all that Francine has done on behalf of our center! We are very pleased to announce that Donna Frieze will assume the position of Board President when the new term begins in July. Donna has been a valued Board member/parent leader and we extend a warm welcome to her in this new capacity.

Gratitude to our Parent-Teacher Organization Co-ChairsWe offer our sincere appreciation and thanks to Jennifer Behr and Jordana Bluestein, who have served as Co-Chairs of the PTO for the past two years. They have dedicated a great deal of time and energy to ensure the success of our PTO-sponsored events, such as the evening Classroom Socials held in the fall, annual Chanukah Party and upcoming Yom HaMorah event honoring our teachers—and played an important role in recruiting our many wonderful parent volunteers who helped out so significantly this year. We owe Jennifer and Jordana a huge debt of gratitude for giving so generously of their time and talents.

Christina Grady and Shelley Morgenstern will begin their second year of PTO Co-Chair service. We are very appreciative of their superb efforts this past school year, and look forward to another successful year under their PTO leadership when they are joined by two new Co-Chairs in the fall, Amy Derris and Cathleen Schoen. We look forward to working with this terrific team! It is because of this strong parent involvement that our school is transformed into a warm community with learning and growing opportunities for students and families alike. We must also extend our grateful thanks to all the families in our midst who offer support to our staff and center in numerous ways. Your contributions significantly help to enhance the work we do on behalf of children.

Intergenerational ProgramWe Need Volunteers!!Do you have a love of children and a willingness to give a few hours of your time each week? If so, we need you! Experience in the classroom is not required - we provide training for our Intergenerational Program volunteers. You will enjoy a rewarding year of fun, work and play with our students under the guidance of professionals. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in becoming a volunteer during the upcoming 2015-16 school year, please call the preschool office at 617-739-6455. You will join a wonderful group of volunteers and participate in a very worthwhile experience. Please consider sharing in this important mitzvah!

Ohel Tzedek

Rabbi Soffer on TIKKUN: To Take on the WorldAt Temple Israel we take the mandate to pursue justice as seriously as any mitzvah. We decided more than a decade ago to rethink how we were pursuing justice, how we were engaging our congregation in that age-old mitzvah. Therefore, we teamed up with professional community organizers and began sending our congregants and staff to community organizing trainings. As a result, over the years, we’ve been able to make tremendous impact, partnering with our friends in other faith communities.

We call this effort in our synagogue, “Ohel Tzedek,” our Tent of Justice—a grassroots approach to repairing our world that starts with each individual and his or her passions or concerns, and then connects the dots to build enough power to “get stuff done.” We’ve gone into action together on issues including Healthcare Reform, Affordable Housing, Marriage Equality, Anti-Bullying legislation, and Gun Violence Prevention measures. These accomplishments all began with asking the question “what do you really care about,” and then organizing ourselves to pool our power and make our voices heard.

This is why, in 2009, our congregation won a Fain Award from the Religious Action Center, our Movement’s social justice headquarters in DC. The award is given every two years to congregations who come up with new, refreshing, and impactful ideas for pursuing justice.

The heart and soul of our approach to social justice is our own stories—we share our life experiences, and we don’t just “sick back and relax.” We act. Together.

This is precisely what a group of teens in our Monday Night School have done, through a course we created called “Tikkun to Take on the World.” The course starts in the classroom and ends at the State House. On December 8, 2014, our students lobbied on social justice issues that directly relate to their lives: women’s health, mental health access and education. Our students, at the state house, became our teachers, our mitzvah makers. They demonstrated what it means to be true rodfei tzedek, champions of justice, with the strength and courage to speak out on matters of the utmost importance

It’s hard to put in words what it’s been like to teach this course—along with Andrew Oberstein, and Mike Fishbein whose idea it was to create it in the first place. Our youth give us more than pride—they give us inspiration. This really was their course, not ours. We just gave them the space to lead.

Because of their leadership and their actions through Tikkun, Temple Israel has been awarded its second Fain Award, which we received at the end of April, at the RAC’s biennial convention called “Consultation on Conscience.”

At this event as well, our former Temple Israel Rabbi Jonah Pesner was installed as the director of the Religious Action Center.

News from BeaconThere is a thrill in the air, as Beacon Academy students are hearing great news from independent schools, including Concord Academy, Nobles, BB&N and the Cambridge School of Weston. We are delighted for our alumni as they have been accepted at and plan to attend colleges such as Brandies, Simmons and Georgetown next year.

The Class of 2015 takes off for their DC trip with the Close Up Foundation, where they will visit Capitol Hill, The Smithsonian, The Holocaust Museum, and The White House while learning about government. Essential to this trip is the study of democracy, as students examine and debate the proper size and role of government during visits to the Jefferson, FDR and MLK memorials. This program is transformative for our students, many of whom have never been on an airplane, let alone traveled to our nation’s history-rich capital. Last year, a Beacon student reflected on the trip, saying:

“My entire life I’ve been surrounded by people like me. Everyone was the same and had the same views and if someone was different, I was quick to ignore that difference.

When I visited D.C., I met people whose views of the world were nothing like mine. By sending us to Washington, Beacon was preparing us to have new experiences and interact with people different from ourselves.”

We can’t wait until this year’s class has completed this Beacon rite of passage, and we look forward to hearing them share their experiences when they return.
