1. Global Stability Analysis– Calculate factor of safety and failure surface
using vertical water pressure only– Apply a resisting force until factor of safety
meets criteria
2. Design Structure to Resist Unbalanced Load
– Option 1 – Widen barge structure (Analyzed in Slope/W)
– Option 2- Use cutoff wall, landing piles and receiving structure together
(Analyzed in Group 2013 by Ensoft)

1. Analyze global stability for SWL2. Determine unbalanced force and failure plane EL3. Perform preliminary design of gate landing
foundation and receiving structure w/o unbalanced forces
4. Apply unbalanced force to gate landing foundation– Unbalanced force resisted by gate foundation alone
5. Apply static hydraulic forces to receiving structure w/o soil above failure surface
– Hydraulic force resisted by receiving structure alone
6. Apply unbalanced force and hydraulic force to combined gate foundation and receiving structure
– Unbalanced force + Hydraulic force resisted by gate foundation and receiving structure together

Conclusion
Falgout Canal Floodgate Control Structure
• Unbalanced force can be resisted by cutoff wall combined with landing piles together
• Hydraulic force can be resisted by the receiving structure• The connection of the cutoff wall and the landing piles
together and the transfer of forces between the landing foundation and the receiving structure is by a pile cap at landing piles and/or through the gate structure.
