November 2018 Volume 26, Issue 58 A Word from the Pastor What does it mean to be a cheerful giver? (Used with permission from www.compellingtruth.org) Giving in the church is a little confusing. Unlike Jews in the Old Testament, we are not commanded to tithe 10% of our income to our primary place of worship. We are, however, exhorted to financially support both our local church and other believers in need around the world. In 2 Corinthians 9, Paul reminds the church in Corinth that they had promised to collect money for other believers. He writes, "The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:6-7). The word translated "cheerful" is the Greek hilaros, and means pretty much the same - cheerful, joyous. But it also has a sense of readiness. It means to be ready to act at a moment's notice, to be prepared. With today's economy, it can be difficult for even the most faithful to give to the church cheerfully - either joyously or readily. There are some things we can do, however, that might help change our attitude. - Remember where it came from. James reminds us, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights …" (James 1:17). Every blessing we have, including money, is from God. - Remember what we owe. Romans 8:32 says, "He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?" The "all things" here refers to victory in this life and salvation for the next. A monetary donation is nothing compared to what we receive because of Jesus' sacrifice. - Remember what the money is used for. The money that Paul collected was usually earmarked for the poor saints in Jerusalem (Romans 15:26). These were people who stayed in Jerusalem and developed the foundation of the church. Many lived in poverty after abandoning homes and farms to learn more about Jesus. Ultimately, this is what our offering should go to - the equipping of the saints and the spread of the Gospel. If it doesn't, we need to rethink who is worthy of our gifts. - Remember God's promise to the giver. Jesus tells us, "give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap" (Luke 6:38). This does not mean that God will always financially bless those who give, but if we make Him a priority, He will take care of us. God's gifts are meant not only to bless us, but for us to use to bless others (1 Peter 4:10). To give grudgingly or not at all is a sign of a heart issue - that we value money, comfort, and security more than the Kingdom of God. It is only when we learn to give ourselves to Christ that we can cheerfully give to support His purpose. If we find giving money to God's work difficult, we probably haven't given our heart, either. What does it mean to be a cheerful giver?

Giving in the church is a little confusing. Unlike Jews in the Old Testament, we are not commanded to tithe 10% of our income to our primary place of worship. Leola Hall Circle

The Leola Hall Circle will continue our monthly Bible Study led by Michele Cribb. This will be a structured

study complete with individual workbooks. We will begin this Bible Study at our next meeting on Tues. Nov.

20th at 10:00 AM in the Church Library.

Our monthly meeting day has been changed to the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 10:00 AM in the Church

Library. All ladies of the Church are welcome to join us, you don't have to be a member of the Church to

attend, just a lady who attends our church. Come check us out, we would love to have you, and you will enjoy

a great time of fellowship!

The school supplies that were collected for Moyock Elementary School were delivered on Oct. 16th. They

were very appreciative and thankful for our efforts. I know this was a tough time for a supply drive on the

heals of Florence and Michael. So, we thank you all who participated to support our schools and their

teachers.

Please continue to support our Food Pantry again this year by purchasing a whole Chicken or Turkey and

donate them to the Food Pantry for Thanksgiving dinners for our clients. Please bring your donations to the

Food Pantry on Mon, Wed, or Fri from 10:00 AM -1:00 PM. If you need to make alternative arrangements,

please contact April Fisher at 757-277-8850. If you can't shop, and would like to make a donation instead, we

will be glad to do the shopping for you. This has become a Church wide, as well as a community wide

endeavor. So, please help us make this another special year for our Food Pantry patrons, they really are so

grateful!

Hilda Brumsey Circle will meet again on Nov. 15th. We will be meeting at Sharon

Morgan's home at 7 pm. It is our annual cookie exchange. Please bring 4 dozen

cookies to be made into platters to give to our home bound members.

Our circle will be hosting Wed. Evening Fellowship on Nov. 14th. All profits will

go to DSS to distribute to needy elderly people in our community for the holidays.

Please help support this cause. We will be serving Hot Dogs and Brats and all the fixings. Why not join us?

November is an exciting month at Pilmoor Preschool! Our students

will learn what it truly means to be thankful. Students will learn about

the Pilgrims, Native Americans, and the very first Thanksgiving. Each

class will prepare a dish to share at our Preschool Thanksgiving Feast.

Also, we will be holding our annual Food Pantry Drive which will run throughout the entire month of

November. Our hope is to teach the students the importance of helping each other and charitable giving.

This month, and always, our Pilmoor Preschool Staff is thankful for each and every one of our students. We

are thankful for the PUMC family and the support that they give to this wonderful ministry.

Happy Thanksgiving and God bless!

God’s Blessings,

Pilmoor Preschool Staff

BSA Troop 182 is having an amazing late summer/early fall. We currently have 13

Scouts who are all working hard on their Scouting experiences. Congratulations to

Zander, Allen, and Charles who recently passed their Board of Reviews for

Tenderfoot. Torii has his Eagle Project approved and is working on gathering the

supplies to complete it. 32 Merit Badges have been earned over the summer. Every

Scout in the troop received recognition at our recent Court of Honor. The Scouts are

working hard to be THRIFTY to fund their scouting adventures. With that being said,

popcorn sales are winding down. If you would like to help these young men out place

your orders soon, as sales end in November. In September, we went to Camp Pipsico for the Guns ’n Grilling

event. The scouts shot .22, 12 gauges, and AR-15s. They spent some of their time over the weekend honing

their skills at splitting wood. Last, but not least, Ian and previous Scout Master Scott Buggey were recently

awarded the highest honor that the Order of the Arrow can bestow upon its members. This is the Vigil Honor

and is awarded to Arrowmen that have given exceptional service to their lodge and scouting community as a

whole. We are very proud of all of our scouts' accomplishments, advancements, and service to their

community.
