„Der Sterngucker“

2014

28. November bis 14. Dezember 2014

„The Stargazer“ THOUGHTS ON THE NEW PRODUCTION

Since time immemorial, celestial lights, stars in the heavenly canopy have exercised a special fascination on mankind. They are something delicate, mysterious and have always been viewed as an expression of divine energy, as a manifestation of heavenly powers. With its long nights filled with magic ahead of the winter solstice, the desire for light is especially great during the Advent period - even if it is only the tiniest twinkle of starlight in the dark of the night. During Salzburg Advent Festival 2014, a stargazer will listen into the hush of this infinite starry sky in order to become acquainted with God, the creator of all beings. In his observations, he will consistently be spell-bound by the events of Advent surrounding Mary and Joseph. The stargazer will experience how the shepherds are dazzled and illuminated by the light of a mysterious star, when the angel proclaims the glad tidings of the glory of Lord (Luke 2.9). Through the stargazer, we will again view the events of Advent from a new perspective. An Advent Festival with many familiar songs and melodies, sensitively interwoven with compositional works and scenic elements. Perhaps, through the stargazer, we will get a little closer to the Star of Peace? Perhaps even transforming into a shining star of salvation for someone else?

Mary and Joseph Mary and Joseph lived around 2000 years ago. People just like you and I, probably with the same yearning for love, worries, doubts and anxieties as we have today. Their unwavering faith in God, their hope and optimism, their solidarity in times of difficulty, allowed them to bear all of their hardships. Between then and now it is likely that little has changed in these ordeals faced by man. Perhaps it is for this very reason that their story touches us, since there is much about Mary and Joseph that we recognise in ourselves?

Singing and music making plays an enormously important role at the Salzburg Advent Festival. The much-praised Salzburg music culture is brought to life through outstanding ensembles such as “Salzburger Geigenmusik“ (Salzburg violin music), “Salz-burger Saitenmusikensemble“ (Salzburg string music ensemble), Juvavum Brass, “Salzburger Blattbläserensemble“ (Salzburg reed instrument ensem-ble) or the baroque portative organ, both as a solo and as part of a chamber orchestra. The “Salzburger Volksliedchor” (Salzburg folk song choir) and two outstanding choral ensembles attest to their diverse repertoire of songs of the highest order.

The Shepherd children of salzburg Thanks to their natural, heart-warming manner, they are a favourite with the audience every year. A tight-knit group, they make music, sing and experience unforgettable adventures all year long. Once a year, in autumn, the shepherd children become “real shepherds” for a while at the rustic Soderkaser on Loferer Alm. At the same time, there is eager rehearsing for their pastoral play, with music making, singing and clapping. Their great performance in the “Festspielhaus” is always rewarded with spontaneous special applause.

The Salzburg Advent FestivalAT THE GREAT FESTIVAL HALL

has been the incomparable highlight of the Salzburg Advent for 68 years. Following construction of the “Großes Festspielhaus” (Great Festival Hall), the world-famous stage is annually transformed into a venue by some 150 participants. The enormous proportion of regular visitors testifies to the extraordinary popularity of this event. Many visitors have been coming for decades, unable to imagine Advent without the festive anticipation provided by the Salzburg Advent Festival.

Some 1,700,000 people from all corners of the globe have already taken de-light in this traditional event. There is no end to the influx of visitors, since each of the approx. 36,000 issued tickets finds a buyer each year.

What is the secret of this unique success? It is the passionate and honest commitment of the general artistic director, Hans Köhl, the composer, Kle-mens Vereno, the director, Caroline Richards, the conductor, Herbert Böck, the stage designer, Dietmar Solt, the costume designer, Hellmut Hölzl, as well as all of the numerous musicians, singers, actors and shepherd children. Using contemporary imagery, they present the events of Advent from a new perspective every year. Many visitors thereby recall their own childhood, even though the Salzburg Advent Festival offers much more than romanticism in the lead up to Christmas.
