Turf News On The Course with Scott Hillyard

It has been quite the fall! The weather presented to us has been very favorable for play, and many of you have taken advantage of it. Temperatures have been consistently above normal, and rainfall has been below normal. It seems El Nino has been in full effect.

What is El Nino? Very generally, El Nino is an accumulation of warm water in the central and east-central Pacific Ocean, near the equator. According to meteorologists, it can have a major impact on our weather. In general, it is expected that our winter will be milder than normal, as well as drier than normal.

How will it impact the golf course this winter? Our biggest concern with weather predictions like this is desiccation of the turfgrass. Snow molds become less of a concern as these fungi typically thrive under snow cover. But desiccation is essentially the plant drying out which can eventually lead to plant death. As we do not have access to water in the winter months, and the wind howls across our property; this is a legitimate concern.

While no actions are a guarantee of plant health and winter survival, there are a few steps we will take to lower the risks associated with a potentially open (no snow cover) winter. We will sand topdress with as much turfgrass as possible. Ideally this will include all tees, approaches and greens. This sand layer acts as a blanket to help the soils retain moisture. Additionally,

we will place tarps on localized sections of greens. These tarps will be placed on areas that are prone to excessive drying whether it be summer or winter. Examples would be the slope on 7 green and the slope on the center right portion of 2 green.

That being said, these practices do take time to complete. We must place the sand before it freezes solid in our parking lot. Once it freezes, even temperatures above freezing during the day are not enough to thaw it to the point of being spreadable. Additionally, tarps should be placed prior to the ground freezing. Staples struggle to be placed in the ground once soils freeze over.

While I want our members to be able to enjoy the golf course for as long as possible, these practices are essential to providing the best playing surfaces possible next season. It is possible we may have a few better than expected days during the month of December, but we must not wait to complete our winter preparations. Eventually, we will need to pick a time to perform maintenance prior to the onset of winter. We will stay in contact, and the golf shop will be able to give you a rough time frame for when we expect this to happen.

As always, should you have any questions about this topic or anything else, do not hesitate to contact us in the grounds department at any time.
