Ah, Buenos Aires, the passion, the dance, the music, thefood, the romance—all well-deserved attributes to this cityon the banks of the River Plate.  Renowned for its geographicsetting, grand avenues, old-time cafes, famed museums anddistinctive architecture, the city is often called the “Paris ofSouth America.”  Our 7-day sojourn will offer you anopportunity to explore both with fellow alumnae andindependently the many attractions of this exciting capital city.Immerse yourself in the gaucho tradition on a special visit toa private estancia in the Pampas, stroll down the River Platewaterfront and through beautiful parks, explore the city’sgreat museums, art galleries and architecture and observe thenewly restored Teatro Colón opera house.

Sunday, February 15BUENOS AIRESContinue your exploration of Buenos Aireswith a driving tour through the narrowstreets of the old city and the broadavenues of the main city. Visit the Plaza dela República to see the iconic Obelisco,built to commemorate the fourthcentenary of the first foundation of the

city. Around the Plaza de Mayo see theCasa Rosada (pink colored PresidentialPalace), with the balconies from which Evaand Juan Domingo Perón addressed themasses; and the Metropolitan Cathedral,the main Catholic church in Buenos Airesand resting place of General San Martín,Argentina´s independence hero. Along theAvenida de Mayo, pass Art Nouveaubuildings, old hotels, theaters, and cafes.Visit San Telmo, a neighborhood ofbohemians, artists, antiques shops, andcobbled streets. Pass Dorrego Square,where every Sunday an antique fair andflea market is held. Continue to thecolorful neighborhood of La Boca, whereartists open their studios and workshops.Walk along the famous street of Caminitoand also visit Puerto Madero, the old portof Buenos Aires, formerly known as “TheDocks”, which was totally redesigned inthe 1990s and is now a chic area. Monday, February 16TIGRE AND PARANA RIVERLess than 20 miles north of the city there isan extraordinary ecological area: the ParanáRiver delta. The river, over 2,000 miles long,forms a very large delta before flowing intothe Rio de la Plata. It resembles a subtropical

labyrinth with over 5,000 islands. Along thispromenade you will see rowing clubs,restaurants, and cafés where the upperclasses used to spend their free time in thegood old days. The remainder of the day is atleisure. This evening attend a Tango Show andDinner at Esquina Carlos Gardel. This is oneof the most elegant and prestigious tangohouses in the city. Built over the location of“Chanta Cuatro”—a restaurant where CarlosGardel, the famous tango singer, used to dinewith his friends. The luxurious old-time-styledining room here features high-tech acousticsand superb dancers, creating a wonderfultango environment.Overnight: Loi Suites Recoleta (B,D)

Tuesday, February 17SAN ANTONIO DE ARECOSpend today immersed in gaucho culture aswe travel to the area of the pampas plains.Visit the town of San Antonio de Areco andlearn about the gaucho’s history and way oflife. Meet with a local silversmith who will talkto us about the traditional methods of thesilver trade. Continue on to a private estanciaor Argentinean ranch. As guests at thisauthentic and historic estancia we willdiscover what goes into the preparation of atraditional Argentinean asado lunch, orArgentine barbecue including empanadas(meat pies) and wine. After lunch, theamateur gauchos among us will have theopportunity to go for a horseback ride acrossthe pampas with its huge empty skies, endlesshorizons and pastures spotted with cattle.

Wednesday, February 18PALERMO AND RECOLETAToday visit the traditional neighborhood ofPalermo, strolling along its large parks, rose gardensand lakes; this is the porteños(residents of Buenos Aires) favorite place to practicesports or take long walks. End the tour in theRecoleta district and visit the Eva Peron Museum.Inaugurated in 2002 on the fiftieth anniversary ofEva’s death. The museum reviews the history of EvaDuarte’s childhood, her youth as an actress, andthen her life as the First Lady.Overnight: Loi Suites Recoleta (B)

This exclusive expedition is designed for Smith College Alumnae, familyand friends who are interested in learning about the arts, history andculture of the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires. This is a mildly activeprogram. Daily programs include: 1 to 2 miles of walking at a leisurelypace, sometimes on uneven terrain. Participants should be physically fitand in good health. Flexibility is essential as the order of the activities inBuenos Aires might change, since local conditions may requirealterations in the schedule. We will be staying at Loi Suites Recoletalocated in the Recoleta Cemetery District with a wealth of culturalhighlights. Loi Suites is surrounded by exquisite French-stylearchitecture, and the best restaurants, bars, art galleries andbeautiful town squares. Loi Suites offers luxurious rooms withEvita Peron’s final resting place opposite the hotel as well asviews of the Rio de la Plata and surrounding neighborhood.Afternoon tea is served in the English atrium ofthe hotel. Typically the weather in BuenosAires is humid and ranges from 70°F-80°Fdegrees during the day with a chance ofsporadic showers. At night, temperaturesdrop down to the mid to upper 60’s. Roaring out of the jungle and hurtling over cliffs between Brazil andArgentina, the Iguazú Falls are one of the natural wonders of the world.The two nights at this extraordinary place offer ample time to relax andsee the cataracts surrounded by luxuriant rain forest, beautiful exoticbirds (toucans, caracas and parrots), and intriguing bromeliads andbutterflies. Walk along the upper and lower trails for close-up views ofthe many different falls. Exploration from the Brazilian side is thrilling.Take a Zodiac boat to see the falls from the lower river, approaching thebase of the falls.
