For many children evacuations effected their childhood. The city children had to start a

new life in the countryside. There were many problems between them. Children who

lived in the city but were poor had to live in places with no water or electricity. They

were normally very dirty and had infections all over their bodies. People who hosted

them took long to understand their cultural ways and their way of life. Sometimes it

worked the other way, people who had lots of money were sent to cottages with no

running water and electricity. The reason they moved countryside was because there

was less chance of being bombed. Some children did not enjoy the countryside because

they had never experienced the farm animals or wild life. There were children

evacuated from their homes in the city to the countryside.

They joined teams lending a hand on the land , working

on farms to boost food production. They picked wild

fruits plant such as blackberries, crab apples,

mushrooms and dandelion leaves which were eaten raw,

cooked or were preserved. They would play board

games, activities and cards. They would also watch

short films and cartoons such as Tarzan. Often the little

children would sleep in the air raid shelters because

they were scared that Germany would bomb their

houses. Everyday children would go to school and

practice what to do if there was an attack. Even though

life was tough at the time they still tried to live life to

the fullest.

At school they learnt how to help people who got hurt and how

to knit things, even the boys had to learn this skill. Schools

would only open once they had air raided shelters. They could

only teach children that they had space for in the air raided

shelters. This meant they had to teach the younger children in the

morning and they older children in the afternoon. Most children

enjoyed the fact that school was shorter and the summer holidays

were extended because of World War II. All children at school

got a novelty mask help them breath when there was a lot of dust

around.

Children’s diets were effected when they were evacuated. It was different because

sweets and treats were not available so they had to eat what the farm provided.

There were lots of carrots so a popular dish was carrot cake. Most people were really

healthy because white bread and sugar were removed or reduced from their diet. The

only problem was that they were low in Vitamin C. The children mostly ate

vegetables. The less fortunate people were lucky because they got a more healthy

diet than usual. Since World War II the British people have tired to keep their diet

healthy.
