Education News Happy New Year 2018! I wish each of you and your families a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2018! 2017 was an exciting year for Colorado APICS. We had many private and public courses this past year and many, many new CPIM’s and CSCP’s and even a few new CLTD’s. Remember to attend a monthly Dinner meeting and be recognized as a new CPIM, CSCP or CLTD and receive your lapel pin and $100 reward. .

2017 brought minor updates to CSCP and CLTD to improve the content of the material. This year we also had a major change to the CPIM material. 5 classes and exams became 2. We are working through the first group of students and working through the new format of the material for CPIM. If you still have exams to take under the legacy CPIM (5 exams) please complete this ASAP as they begin to sunset in 2018. Please see previous newsletters or contact me about specifics of the expiring exams for Legacy CPIM. Since graduating from CSU and CU many years ago, I have set new goals to accomplish some type of professional development each year for myself. Take a class, learn a new skill, take a seminar or webinar, earn a certification, etc. This year I completed both of the new CPIM exams. I believe that this practice has helped me to stay knowledgeable about the changing world and especially all the advances in Supply Chain Management. Colorado APICS was chartered to provide Supply Chain Education, the schedules for Winter/Spring 2018 are published in this newsletter. If there are classes you would like to see that are not offered please let me know. If CPIM, CSCP or CLTD courses are not for you the chapter hosts tours, and dinner meetings that are also great professional development tools. I encourage you to stay at the top of the Supply Chain game and join me in goal setting and attend one or more of our events as a learning experience and a great face to face social interaction as well. If you have questions, you can contact me at 303-271-1818 x105 or [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you in a course this Winter! Again, Happy New Year 2018, may it be your best year ever!!

“I was able to take and pass the CPIM exam suite with the help of the courses offered by my local

APICS (Colorado Chapter) organization. The detailed review of their materials allowed me to pass each exam at the first

attempt. Class discussion and the real life examples of the concepts helped my understanding enormously. I

subsequently took the CSCP classes and just passed that exam last week. The bi-weekly classes were key to my

success. I feel well prepared to handle the challenges of the fast paced Supply Chain environment!” Caren King, MBB,

“I have to be honest with you that I had some reservations in the beginning what I would get out of this sort

of class and what I would take away. I had no idea the overall impact that this class would have on me and my job and how I

would be able to apply so much each and every day to my company. I really have never taken a class like this let alone enjoyed getting up on Saturdays at 5:30 am for 10 weeks. I was excited to get to class and learn the material to help advance my

knowledge, not only for my job but for me personally as well. It was an amazing journey that has already impacted my company.

I have created my own MRP system that has helped me lower our inventory dollars on hand since the end of March from nearly

$900K down just under $700K because I have much better control of what is coming in and what is going out and how long it will last us. I have our inventory turns down as well since I am able to closely monitor our inventory usage on a monthly basis,

as well as the last three months average better in my MRP system.

There are only a few people that knew I was taking the class and those who didn’t know I was taking it, like my boss, still don’t

quite understand how or why I am able to continue to drop the inventory dollars in the warehouse and have still not run us out of a single item since beginning this endeavor.” Dawn Livingston, Purchasing and Logistics, Ride Designs

“As both a career advancement tool or a current state of "best in class" refresher, CLTD is a must have for industry participants When enrolled in the CLTD training course , the participants can easily attain a more complete understanding of the material and experience that "Aha" moment again and again by applying real world examples to the course material.” Christopher “Kit” Childers, CLTD, Supply Chain Professional

"In August and September of this year I was privileged to be include in the first class for the APICS Certification in Logistics, Distribution and Transportation in Denver Colorado. This class was my introduction to this discipline. The instructors were knowledgeable, helpful and dedicated in getting the subject matter across not just to pass an exam but on how to use this information to improve a business. Even though this is the first of its kind class in Colorado and was also pretty much my introduction to Logistics, Distribution and Transportation it provided me the knowledge and insight to pass the certification exam on my first try.” Ken Fiore, CPIM, CLTD, Operations Manager, Custom Stone Etching, LLC.

What are Students saying about APICS Education in Colorado?

“As a young professional looking for a way to further my career and knowledge of Supply Chain, I found

these classes from the local APICS Colorado Chapter. The instructors are very experienced in the supply chain industry and

teach in a way that makes the material easy to understand and fun to learn. The classes have helped me in my current job

complete projects with confidence. There were also great students that helped me learn from their experiences as well as build

many friendships. I would highly recommend these courses to anyone new to the supply chain industry, or even those that have

been in the industry for a while, anyone who deals with the supply chain of a company. It will help tremendously. I plan on getting

the CSCP certification in the future and will take the classes from these instructors, there’s just no other way.” Joseph McQueen,

CPIM, Sr. Supply Chain Analyst, Charter Communications

“Three years ago I took the CPIM classes and really enjoyed it. I found the classes to be extremely informative. The knowledge gained in the classes helped me advance in my career and also get my current job. Since completing the CPIM exams I have enrolled two of my employees in the CPIM classes so that they can benefit from the same opportunity that I was provided.” Roy Leckonby, CPIM, Director of Global RMA Operations, SpectraLink

“APICS classes have helped my critical thinking in assessing inventory liabilities. It has also allowed me to be a better gatekeeper of inventory management for Avaya. We have already begun to see the benefits.” Maria Martinez, Supply Chain Analyst, Avaya

“I am an Electronic Engineer and I have been working in International/Technical Sales for the last 10+ years. My last class to complete the World Trade Center’s Certificate of International Sales was “Principles of Supply Chain Management” and I immediately became mesmerized with in this Industry (thanks to Roger Harris’ very enthusiastic teaching Technics). This class made me re-think my career. I enrolled on the CPIM class, and I was fortunate to meet a lot of very interesting people (my classmates and instructors) and I became a part of a very welcoming Industry family. I am currently taking my exams and I am looking forward to my first job in this industry.” Hilda Fonseca de Gill

“The APICS CPIM classed taught by the APICS Colorado Chapter 81 was outstanding. The knowledge the instructors bring to each class made understanding the material very easy. Every detail has been thought threw from how the classroom is set up to help people become engaged and to stay engaged during the class, to bringing in specific instructors who specialize in specific topics, makes this a fantastic learning environment. I believe I will have the competitive advantage when taking what I have learned from the classes and applying it to my career.” Mike Hansen, Supply Chain Professional, Air Methods

APICS Colorado 81 Christmas Adopt a Family Program 2017 +

153 Children from 57 Families =

Merry Christmas! Again this year the staff at Arvada Kmart was a tremendous help to fill the shortages we had in gifts from the initial buy. A

huge thank you to Assistant Manager Joe Carlton for all his support of our program this year THANK YOU! This summer we were able to take advantage of the Wheat Ridge Walmart closing and buy many gifts at 50% off. Our forecasting and MRP

Planning turned out to be pretty accurate, even though we did not have the list of kids (customers) yet!

Also, looks like our Purchase Price Variance was favorable, that is, we put about $1.90 under the tree for every dollar donated!!

Note the license plates used (family numbers) to assure that nothing is left out and the family receives all the gifts for each child, no short shipments. All packages were delivered on time before Christmas. Yes, to pull this off we used our skills in CPIM,

CLTD and CSCP.

In addition, I would like to thank Diana Harris, Jamie Swan and Honey Johnson, for helping me shop. Thank you to all that

donated dollars or supplies to help make this happen. Thank you to all 57 folks that helped sort, wrap, and deliver. It takes a lot of hands to make this happen.

Thank You and Happy 2018 to all!

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

I don’t know about you, but I feel like 2017 seemed to come and go in a blink of an eye! Looking back on your own 2017, how well did you achieve your New Year’s resolutions? Is there anything you think you could do better to help with attaining your resolutions in 2018? You can count on the APICS Colorado Chapter 81 Board of Directors to be using the responses from this year’s member survey to attain the chapter’s resolutions in 2018! Thank you to all who took the time to complete the survey. We received responses from 79 members (out of 375), which is just over a 21% response rate! Here are some highlights from the survey responses:

In question 3, the survey asked what your preferred communication channel from APICS Colorado Chapter 81 was, and 94% of you responded with email, which is not too surprising given how digital life can be these days. In addition, 6% of respondants answered with

the monthly newsletter, which is very encouraging to hear that our members are getting valuable information from the newsletter, whether it be in the electronic or paper form. In question 7, the survey asked what primarily determines whether you choose to attend an APICS Colorado Chapter 81 PDM, and 39% of you responded with Topic/Speaker, while another 32% responded with Location. These responses will help the chapter assess the topics and speakers that are chosen for the PDM’s, as well as where the PDM’s are located to best suit our members. In question 8, the survey asked what the primary reason was that you choose to be an APICS member. 46% of respondants answered with career advancement, while 23% answered with networking. These responses will help the chapter assess how it is helping its members to advance their careers, and ensure that PDM’s and tours are giving you great networking opportunities. And the part that everyone has been waiting for, the winner of the drawing for the $100 Amazon gift card. Drumroll please…and the winner is: Christoph Rahbany! Congratulations Christoph!! Last, I encourage you to take a few minutes to log into your profile on the APICS corporate website (www.apics.org) and review your

membership status. If your membership expiration date is within a couple of months, it is time to renew. Please don’t hesitate to contact me for assistance in getting you or your company’s memberships renewed through APICS Corporate. Best Regards,
