Built as a secondary landing strip for the historic

Dyersburg Army Air Base in Halls, the city-owned

airport is home to local aviators and is the front door

to Dyer County for corporate air traffic. Singer Patsy

Cline made a phone call from the airport during a

refueling stop shortly before her plane crashed in foul

weather near Camden, Tenn., en route to Nashville.

The Dr. Walter E. David Wildlife Museum on campus

features one of each species of duck found on the

Mississippi Flyway. The collection contains more than 70

species of animals from several continents, including

moose, caribou and bears. Dyersburg State is also

famous for its massive dogwood blooms in spring and

100 different species of trees native to West Tennessee

virgin forests. The Richard E. Donner Arboretum and

Nature Trail is also a favorite for people who enjoy the

outdoors. The museum and arboretum are open year

round.

largest biker bar — the Full Throttle Saloon — in Sturgis,

S.D., and it grew into a household name. Then he built a

genuine moonshine distillery in the tiny town of Trimble,

tradition and recipes, and an authentic copper still,

Ballard creates multiple flavors that are satisfying and

refreshing. His authentic Tennessee moonshine recipe

I-155 Welcome CenterAs you enter Tennessee on I-155 from Missouri, stop

by the welcome center at mile marker 8.7. It’s open 24

hours a day.

Lenox BridgeState Road 182 • Dyersburg

The hand-operated, swing span bridge originally

crossed the Obion River on County Road S8025 west

of Lenox. Built in 1917, it now spans a boat canal in the

Lakewood Subdivision. It is the only surviving “swing

span, pony Pratt through truss bridge” in the country.

museum — it’s a working depot with daily Amtrak

stops and a late night visit from the City of New

The Davy Crockett Cabin Museum, the last home of

the legendary hero, features furniture, tools and arti-

facts from the early 1800s, as well as his mother’s grave.

Restored from the timbers of his home where he lived

from 1822 to 1835, the museum provides insight into

Crockett’s life. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, and

during Davy Crockett Days in October, the museum is

open 9am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday and 1-4:30pm

Sunday. At other times, the museum opens by

appointment.

Discovery Park of America is a 50-acre complex that

offers visitors a world-class educational and entertain-

include a theater simulation of the 1811-12 earthquakes

Dixie Gun Works, pictured below, is the largest

supplier of black powder shooting equipment, parts and

antique guns in the world. Its Old Car Museum is home

Of Tennessee’s four historic covered bridges, the

Parks Covered Bridge is the only one in the western

portion of the state. Originally spanning a drainage ditch

dividing two fields on Parks’ farm, the bridge is the only

known Kingpost truss covered bridge in the state.

1938 by presidential proclamation. Lake Isom is the

oldest refuge in Tennessee and encompasses some

Experience the Mississippi River at the Marijac

Memorial River Park. Only two miles from downtown

Tiptonville, this new park is in a small grove of timber

just below the great bend in the river and features a

scenic overlook, picnic area and boat landing.

Mindfield, a massive network of steel artwork off

Main Street, is the life’s work of Brownsville artist Billy

Tripp. He

structure in

1989. It will

evolve until his

death, at

the site of his

Reelfoot Lake was formed when the Mississippi

River temporarily reversed its flow during a violent

series of earthquakes in 1811 and 1812 on the nearby

New Madrid fault. The 15,000-acre park’s ecosystem is

unlike any other place in Tennessee. Visitors can see

bald eagles and almost every kind of shorebird. In

addition to boating, fishing, camping and hiking,

diverse

species of

animals

and plants

make it a

popular

attraction

for visitors

from

across the

country.

The

visitor’s

center is open 8am-4:30pm seven days a week.

farm that began as a land grant from President

Andrew Jackson. It features close-up views of 400

Once home to hundreds of Army pilots training to fly

B-17 bombers, the former Dyersburg Army Air Base still

operates a portion of its enormous WWII runway for

general aviation. The runway features replica barracks

brings back the B-17 and other war birds every August.
