WELCOME TO THE 2017 OTTAWA EQUESTRIAN TOURNAMENTSBeing my lifelong passion, elevating equestrianism has been a major focus of the Wesley Clover Foundation’s vision for the revitalization and development of Wesley Clover Parks. The return of international show jumping tournaments to the nation’s capital was a priority for the team when we started on our journey of rejuvenating this facility.

Our inaugural event in 2015 was met with overwhelming success! Now in its third year, we are thrilled by the continued support we have received for the Ottawa Equestrian Tournaments, and are pleased with the success of our inaugural Ottawa Welcome held earlier this summer. Our sincere congratulations to the winner of Ottawa Welcome Grand Prix, Laurie Bucci and Glimmer.

In combination with our heritage grass Grand Prix field, the addition of our international-calibre all-weather jumping ring has made Wesley Clover Parks a quality competition facility and a much-loved stop on the tour by the equestrian community, both locally and nationally.

We hope that the addition of our Celebration of the Horse festivities will encourage even more families and spectators to join us and enjoy our amazing sport. By raising awareness of equestrianism, spotlighting the Olympic sport of show jumping, and bringing international events back to Ottawa, we are elevating our sport to new heights.

Thank you for joining us on this journey, we look forward to another exciting year of competition at the Ottawa Equestrian Tournaments!

A LETTER FROM CAPTAIN CANADAWith a long career in the sport of show jumping that began in the Ottawa Valley, it has been a pleasure to see international level competition return to the Nation’s Capital with the establishment of the Ottawa Equestrian Tournaments. I have had the honour of being a member of the organizing committee, led by Karen Sparks and the team at Wesley Clover Parks, that has successfully brought world class show jumping back to a beautiful property enjoyed by athletes and spectators alike. It is with great pride that we continue our sport’s legacy within the Ottawa community.

In just three years this event has expanded to include three weeks of competition, has established itself as a quality venue, as well as continue to display potential for further growth. The entire Millar family looks forward to participating in the 2017 Ottawa Equestrian Tournaments and its success in future years. I encourage you to join us on this incredible ride.

OTTAWA EQUESTRIAN TOURNAMENTS ONES TO WATCHBY JENNIFER WARD

The third annual Ottawa Horse Shows will feature several top show jumping competitors vying for victory. Among those competing will be the entire Millar family of Perth, ON, with patriarch and ten-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar leading the charge. His daughter, Amy, made her Olympic debut last summer in Rio while son, Jonathon, enjoyed top three finishes in every major event held at the 2016 Ottawa International Horse Show.

Several international competitors will be in Ottawa to give the Canadians a run for their money, including father-daughter duo Mario and Lucy Deslauriers of the United States, Colombia’s Juan Manuel Gallego, and young Irish phenom, Daniel Coyle. Only 22 years of age, Coyle has been enjoying wins across the continent, and arrives in Ottawa with a string of top horses.

Show jumping fans will have a lot to cheer about when the Ottawa National and Ottawa International Horse Shows come to town! Here are just a few of the riders to watch for.

Erynn Ballard began riding at the age of five with her parents, David and Sandi Ballard, and entered the show ring one year later. Equally talented in hunter, jumper and equitation, Ballard became only the second Canadian to win the prestigious ASPCA Maclay National Championship at the 1998 National Horse Show at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. The following year, she captured the individual gold medal at the 1999 North American Young Riders’ Championship riding Leacock.

Ballard made her Nations’ Cup debut at the 2006 Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ tournament, helping Canada to achieve victory for the first time in the event’s history, and was named the 2006 Equine Canada “Equestrian of the Year”. Ballard is currently focusing on the development of several young horses, including Carimba B, Ischtar, Edison P, and Thalys Z, and can frequently be found visiting the winner’s circle in both Canada and the U.S.

She further developed her skills working as a trainer at Calgary’s world-renowned Spruce Meadows before moving back to eastern Canada in 2000.

Covert made her Canadian Show Jumping Team debut riding Utan in the 2010 Nations’ Cup in Buenos Aires. The following year, she and Utan returned to Argentina where the pair led Canada to victory in the Nations’ Cup and placed second individually in the World Cup Grand Prix. In 2013, Covert and Utan again represented Canada, this time at the Nations’ Cup in Porto Alegre, Brazil, where the team finished fifth. Utan will again be Covert’s top mount for the Ottawa Horse Shows.

In addition to her busy riding and coaching schedule, Covert is a Rider Ambassador for the humanitarian organization, JustWorld International. She is married to Guilherme Jorge, course designer at this year’s Ottawa National Horse Show. The couple’s first child together, Lucas, was born in 2015.

A native of Ireland, Daniel Coyle was born into a family of longtime horsemen and began riding at an early age. He began competing in International Equestrian Federation (FEI) sanctioned competition in 2010 at the tender age of 15, leaving little doubt as to his future ambitions. In 2016, Coyle travelled to Wellington, FL, to be an assistant rider for fellow Irishman, Conor Swail. At the end of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) circuit, Coyle was offered a job riding for Susan Grange and her daughter, Ariel, at their Lothlorien Farm in Cheltenham, ON. In one short year, Coyle’s international show jumping career has blossomed.

In his Nations’ Cup debut, Coyle jumped double-clear with Tennyson to lead Ireland to victory in the 2016 Furusiyya Nations’ Cup at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, BC. In the fall, Coyle and Fortis Fortuna won the $100,000 CSI3* Grand Prix de Penn National at the 2016 Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg, PA, before claiming the inaugural Under 25 National Championship at the CSI4*-W Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON.

Coyle has been enjoying the same level of success so far this year, claiming major grand prix victories at such prestigious events as the 2017 Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL, the Caledon Equestrian Park in Palgrave, ON, and the Spruce Meadows Summer Series in Calgary, AB. Coyle arrives at the Ottawa Horse Shows hoping to extend his winning streak with multiple Lothlorien mounts.

HUGH GRAHAMBIRTHPLACE: Georgetown, Ontario BIRTHDATE: February 10, 1949 HOMETOWN: Schomberg, Ontario

KNOCK OUT 3E: 2006 bay Canadian Sport Horse gelding by Jamestown x Class Action Owner: King Ridge Stables

A veteran rider, Hugh Graham has been a stalwart of the Canadian Equestrian Team for more than 40 years. A champion calf roper throughout high school, Graham’s rodeo career ended due to a fractured leg. He went on to work for Olympic team gold medalist Jim Day and became interested in show jumping, winning his first grand prix event in 1973.

Graham has since ridden on Olympic, World Championship and Pan American teams with great success, including a team gold medal at the 1987 Pan Am Games, and has represented Canada in four World Cup Final events.

Inducted into the Jump Canada Hall of Fame in 2016, Graham’s career continues to flourish into its fifth decade. He won two FEI level events in 2014 riding Airborne, owned by Julie Firestone, and continues to enjoy great success riding products of the breeding program at KingRidge Stables, denoted by the ‘3E’ at the end of their names, where Graham is the head trainer. CHANEL DU CALVARIE: 2008 chestnut Belgian Sport Horse mare by Luccianno x Kashmir Owner: François Lamontagne

BETH UNDERHILLBIRTHPLACE: Guelph, Ontario BIRTHDATE: September 5, 1962 HOMETOWN: Schomberg, Ontario

COUNT ME IN: 2007 bay Hanoverian gelding by Count Grannus x Sherlock Holmes Owner: Sandy Lupton

Francois Lamontagne knew from an early age that horses were his passion. Immediately after finishing high school, he devoted himself to the sport of show jumping. Now a well-recognized competitor and an Equine Canada certified coach, Lamontagne has owned and operated Ferme Lamontagne since 2005. Although based in Saint-Eustache, Quebec, he spends his winters in Florida competing with his students.

In 2011, Lamontagne was named the Jump Canada Talent Squad National Champion after riding Undergroud des Hauts Droits to the win in both phases of the Talent Squad National Final, held during the Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON. It was a sign of things to come, as the pair was named to the 2012 Nations’ Cup team in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Lamontagne is currently enjoying great success with the talented young mare, Chanel du Calvarie. The pair arrive in Ottawa hot off back-to-back victories in the $35,000 Open Welcome and the $36,000 Grand Prix, both held during the CSI2* Headwaters Cup at Angelstone Tournaments in Erin, ON, in June. As the defending champions of the $20,000 Open Welcome, Lamontagne will be looking to repeat his winning ways at this year’s Ottawa National Horse Show.Cealy Tetley

As a teenager, Beth Underhill earned top honours from the Royal Conservatory for her singing, but it was her love of horses that won out. First named to the Canadian Equestrian Team in 1990, Underhill has ridden in over 25 Nations’ Cup competitions and, in 1993, was the first woman to win the Canadian World Cup League, a feat she repeated in 1999. With her retired partner Monopoly, Underhill earned more than $1 million in the show ring.

A veteran of Pan American, Olympic and World Equestrian Games, Underhill has claimed the Canadian Show Jumping Championship title on three occasions - in 1994 and 1996 with Monopoly and in 1999 with Altair. Having represented Canada at the 1998 World Equestrian Games in Rome, Italy, Underhill and Altair were then Team Bronze Medalists at the 1999 Pan American Games. The same year, they finished second in the richest show jumping event in the world, the $800,000 du Maurier International, held at the CSIO Spruce Meadows “Masters” tournament where Underhill was also named the Leading Lady Rider.

Most recently, Underhill, who operates Beth Underhill Stables in Schomberg, ON, has been enjoying great success with Count Me In, claiming a total of four grand prix victories in 2016 alone. One of those wins came at the Ottawa International Horse Show, where Underhill emerged victorious in the $100,000 CSI2* Classic following a 19-horse jump-off.

BONZAY: 2006 bay Dutch Warmblood gelding by Numero Uno x Heartbreaker Owner: Isotropic Networks Inc.DAVEAU: 2008 bay Dutch Warmblood gelding by Zento x Glennridge Owner: Millar Brooke Farm

As the son of ten-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar, Jonathon Millar began riding at an early age on the family farm in Perth, Ontario. In 1994, Millar made his Nations’ Cup debut at the Washington International Horse Show.

From 1997 to 2000, Millar trained and competed in Europe with Dutch Olympian Emile Hendrix. Upon returning to Canada, he was named as an alternate for the 2000 Sydney Olympic team. It would be ten more years before Millar would make his major games debut riding Contino 14 as a member of Canada’s fifth placed team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky. In 2015, Millar rode on Nations’ Cup teams in Wellington, Florida, and Coapexpan, Mexico, with Calvin Klein before taking the Leading Canadian Rider title at the 2015 Royal Horse Show. Millar began the 2016 season by representing Canada in the Furusiyya Nations’ Cup at CSIO4* Ocala, FL, with Star Power. He has most recently been enjoying strong grand prix placings with his current top mounts, Bonzay and Daveau.

In December of 2015, Millar married Kelly Soleau, who will also be competing at the Ottawa Horse Shows. Millar works alongside his father and younger sister, Amy, as a member of the training, coaching and horse sales business at Millar Brooke Farm.

Aptly dubbed ‘Captain Canada’ by his fans, Ian Millar has ridden in more team competitions than any other Canadian rider. At the 2012 London Olympics, Millar set a world record by becoming the first athlete in any sport, from any nation, to represent their country in ten Olympic Games. Millar achieved his best Olympic performance to date in London with a top ten finish individually riding Star Power.

In ten Pan American Games appearances, Millar has earned ten medals, including two individual and two team gold. In 1988 and 1989, Millar and his legendary partner, Big Ben, became the first-ever horse and rider combination to win back-to-back World Cup Finals. In 2014, Millar led Canada to victory in the $300,000 BMO Nations’ Cup before winning the coveted $1,500,000 CP International at the CSIO5* Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ tournament riding Dixson. Remarkably, Millar captured a record tenth Canadian Show Jumping Champion title in 2016, again riding Dixson.

The most decorated equestrian in Canadian history, Millar is a member of the Order of Canada, the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame, and is a honourary doctorate of the University of Guelph. As the defending champion of the Brookstreet Hotel Grand Prix, Millar arrives at Wesley Clover Parks with another victory set firmly in his sights.

Born and raised in Montreal, Melissandre Lincourt began riding at a young age when her parents, both teachers, enrolled her in lessons at a local barn. She began her competitive career aboard ponies before progressing to the Junior Hunter ranks with an off-the-track Thoroughbred.

Riding Just Stella L, Lincourt enjoyed great success in FEI-sanctioned competition in 2015, including jumping clear to place fifth in the $100,000 Longines World Cup Grand Prix at L’International Bromont before winning the $49,500 CSI3* Open Welcome at the Angelstone National tournament one week later. As a result of her strong season, Lincourt realized a lifelong goal when she was named to the 2016 Canadian Show Jumping Team short list for the first time in her career.

Lincourt, who holds a law degree from the University of Montreal, operates a large training and sales business, importing and producing hunters and young jumpers for the sales market. She prides herself on her ability to match riders with suitable mounts, which is how Just Stella L entered her life. She found the chestnut mare in Germany as a six-year-old for a client who has since passed the reins over to Lincourt. Having placed second to ‘Captain Canada’ Ian Millar in last year’s Brookstreet Hotel Grand Prix at the Ottawa National Horse Show, Lincourt and Just Stella L will be looking for the win this time around.

The daughter of ten-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar, Amy Millar is now an Olympian herself. From early beginnings riding on the family farm, Millar now trains alongside her father and older brother, Jonathon, at Millar Brooke Farm in Perth, ON.

In 1996, Millar entered the grand prix ranks riding Zagal, the same year she won an individual silver medal at the North American Young Riders’ Championship. Exactly 20 years later, she made her Olympic debut, competing as a member of Canada’s fourth-placed team at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, aboard Heros.

Millar has enjoyed great success in recent years with Heros, earning numerous grand prix wins as well as making Nations’ Cup appearances in Ocala, FL, Langley, BC, and Calgary, AB, as well as Aachen, Germany, widely considered to be the most prestigious show jumping venue in the world.

Millar comes into the Ottawa Horse Show looking for a hometown win with Heros, as well as her new mount, Truman, acquired during the 2017 winter season.Starting Gate Communications

With Arriscraft Rocca, White was the traveling alternate for the 2003 Pan American Games and made his Nations’ Cup debut that same year at the Spruce Meadows “Masters” tournament in Calgary, AB. SPECTATOR GUIDE TO EQUESTRIAN COMPETITIONWHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ‘SHOW JUMPING’ AND ‘HUNTER’ COMPETITION?

SHOW JUMPING is one of three Olympic equestrian sports, along with Dressage and Eventing. Traditionally, equestrian is the only Olympic sport, other than one mixed-sex sailing event, where men and women compete as equals.

Grand prix is the highest and most challenging level of show jumping competition with horse-rider combinations competing over a set course of obstacles that can be as tall as 1.60 meters (5.25 feet) in height. Show jumping competition is based on speed and accuracy; horse and rider combinations must clear all of the fences with the least number of faults, and in the fastest time, to win.

HUNTER competition is based on the elegant traditions of the foxhunting field. Unlike jumpers, hunters are judged subjectively on the style, movement, and technical proficiency of the horse and rider. Therefore, they must display jumping ability, manners, style, and an even pace.

HOW IS SHOW JUMPING SCORED?

Penalties in show jumping competition are referred to as FAULTS. Faults, as well as elimination, can occur in a number of ways including:

• A KNOCK-DOWN, or lowering the height of an obstable, is penalized with four faults, as is putting a foot in the water jump.• The first REFUSAL to jump a fence is penalized with four faults. A refusal occurs when a horse stops its forward motion.• The second refusal to jump a fence results in elimination from the class.• Exceeding the time allowed is penalized. In Canadian national competition, riders are penalized with one fault for every

second over the time allowed. In international competition, riders are penalized one fault for every four seconds over the time allowed.

• Falling off while on course results in elimination.• Jumping the fences out of the correct order, known as GOING OFF-COURSE, also results in elimination.

Horse and rider combinations must clear all of the fences on course without jumping or time faults in order to qualify for the second round, which is also known as the JUMP-OFF. The jump-off is a shortened version of the first-round course, and the horse-rider combination that completes the course with the least number of faults in the fastest time is named the winner.

WHAT DO RIDERS RECEIVE WHEN THEY WIN?

Generally, the top ten or 12 competitors will receive a share of the prize money designated for that class, as well as ribbons corresponding to their placing. The class winner or a division champion may also receive a COOLER, a blanket used to cover a horse that is sweating after a competition or training session. A cooler, often made of wool or mesh material, aids the horse in cooling off without catching a chill.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT LEVELS AND TYPES OF SHOW JUMPING COMPETITIONS?

Yes! Show jumping competitions, or classes, are generally organized by DIVISION. These divisions can be based on fence height, horse or rider age, or ownership specifications. Divisions commonly held at the Ottawa Equestrian Tournaments include: schooling, pony, children’s, junior, adult-amateur, amateur-owner, 1.30m, 1.35m, 1.45m, 1.5m, and open or grand prix jumpers.

Schooling jumper divisions are normally used as a training session for the horse and rider, as SCHOOLING refers to warm-ups done prior to a rider’s competitive round. Pony, children’s, and junior jumpers are all separated by the height of the jump, the largest being the junior jumpers, and the smallest being the pony jumper division. Horses compete in the children’s and junior jumper divisions, whereas ponies compete in the pony jumper divisions. Riders in all three of these divisions must be under 18 years of age.

Riders in the AMATEUR-OWNER jumper divisions are non-professionals over the age of 17, and they, or a member(s) of their immediate family, must own the horse on which they compete. Riders in the adult-amateur jumper division must be non-professionals over the age of 17, but they do not have to own the horse on which they compete.

Each division generally offers a number of classes for riders competing at the specified level, often including a SPEED CLASS in addition to the regularly formatted show jumping classes. In a speed class, competitors are timed over one round of jumping, with no jump-off. The rider with the fewest number of faults in the fastest time is named the winner.

WHAT DOES CSI3* MEAN?

Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) is the international governing body for equestrian sport. The FEI ranks all of its sanctioned show jumping competitions based on a star system, ranging from one to five stars, depending on the amount of prize money, or total purse, offered throughout the competition. CSI, which stands for “concours de saut international,” with the star system denoting the amount of prize money, is how FEI-sanctioned show jumping competitions are determined.
