  • PREFACE

In dealing with the subject of Table Rapping andAutomatic Writing, I should like my readers to givea fair trial to both systems for communicating witlr.spirit friends. There are numerous ways of gaininginformation, and also for convincing skeptics. Somesay it is all done with "Animal Magnetism," others say"Telepathy" (transference of thought from one mindto another) can explain a good deal. -That may be soin some cases, but then we must consider the facts aswe find them, and then carefully compare them and seewhat progress we have made. Some people have said"How is it that spirits condescend to come and lift thetable, or rap on the table?" To them I may say, whena person has passed on, he does not feel quite at homefor some time-his spirit has its longings for those leftbehind; just the same when a man goes to a foreigncountry, he does not get accustomed tcr the country allat once-his mind travels home on various occasions, but he gets used to his new home in time. It is just thesame with the person thaJ has passed to the higherIife--he gets accustomed to his new surroundings andconditions in time. He has to begin to learn the differ-

But he knows howmuch we can stand; he does not care to scare us, so hemakes himself heard by "tapping" on the table or bed-room door, or any place where he thinks proper.Sometimes he might show us various colored lights;other times musical instruments are played, sometimesheavy furniture is moved. I have seen a large tablerise up from the floor, and I have been in a very largehouse that has been shaken by spirit influences, and thevibration could easily be felt. Some people object toinvestigate psychic phenomena, and then they condemnit. A person has no right to condemn a subject thathe does not understand. He should first study it, withan unbiassed mind, and have patience, and then seewhat conclusion he can come to. There is only oneconclusion he can come to, if he studies the subjectfairly, and that is, spirit communion is possible underthe right psychological conditions.

    THE HOME CIRCLE

In nearly every well-regulated family we generallyfind one or more of the members possessed of psychicpower, but they are often at a loss to know how todevelop that power. It is the best to start with "table tilting." Procure a

round table and let the members or friends of thefamily sit around it, with their hands lightly resting onthe table, palms downward, and in a short time a pecul-iar magnetic vihmtion will be felt; that, as a rule, giveswarning that there is a spirit present, and after severalminutes have elapsed, one of the sitters should addressthe table just the same as if he were speaking to anindividual. He should give the spirit communicatingcertain rules to work by when answering questions, etc., such as three raps or tilts to mean "yes"; one rapor tilt to mean "no"; two raps to mean "doubtful," andfour raps or tilts to mean "good-night." You maythen put a question to the spirit and see what answeryou get, and note it down in a memorandum book.

Reliable information may be gleaned from the fore-6

  • going, which may prove very useful :-It is the best tosit in a darkened room, male and female alternately, not all the males together and all the females together;there is more equilibrium of magnetism when they areseated alternately. Sometimes the spirit controllingwill give instructions how the sitters must be arrangedso as to get the best results. In numerous cases thespirit will speak through one of the sitters, and delivera message that may be welcomed by someone present. Before commencing with the circle, it is a good plan tosing a hymn or two, or to have some sacred music ifthere are any musical instruments available, as it tendsto bring the sitters more in harmony with the PsychicLaws, and as a rule better results are obtained.

Sometimes the spirit will tell his name by means ofthe table. In that case the medium should repeat thealphabet slowly, beginning at ABC, etc."ann in a shorttime the name will be spelt in full, such as "JohnSmith." Then various queries may be put, and as arule they are answered in a straightforward manner. At certain times the controlling spirit will tell the con-dition of a sick person that may be a great distanceaway. At other times advice on health may beobtained, and various remedies prescribed, which inmany cases prove most efficacious. Sometimes foreignspirits communicate messages, but they are often hardto understand: hut with perseverance and practice youwill be able to understand them. Some of the most

remarkable cures known have been given to sitterswhile under control. If you don't get any phenomena the first tim~ you

try, don't be discouraged; you must persevere, as spiritcommunion is not possible at any time, but only at cer~tain times and under certain conditions. The best timeto get phenomena is in the afternoon or evening. When you have sittings, it is the best to hold them at agiven time, say seven, eight, or nine o'clock in theevening, of about an hour's duration, as from eight tonine p. m. Of course you may sit at any time if con-venient, it just depends upon the amount of time theinvestigator can dev(lte to it; but by all means sit atregular times, as better results will be obtained. Peoplethat are in poor health will be greatly benefited by sit-ting in a circle, either public or private-by coming incontact with other people's magnetism or aura, theywill thereby absorb a great amount of vitality andstrength if the other sitters are in good health.

It is verysurprising to hear clairaudient manifestations, and itis also very gratifying to see the bright, smiling face ofthe spirit. They can show you some of the most mag-nificent views that is almost impossible to see in thenatural world. If ever you see a materialized form, whether it is a

face, hand, or the full body, you must not be afraid. If you begin to get nervous and frightened the formwill vanish. It is always best to speak to the spiritor vision and question it, then you will be able to seeif you know it, and you may also ask the apparition ifit has any message for you. If it warns you of anyimportant event or accident, or loss of money, or anycalamity, it will be best for you to act on the advice; ifyou do not, it may turn out very serious. I have seenpeople go into business and speculate money in shares, property, etc.: they have been warned not to specu-late, and they have been very heavy losers-they ha':ebeen sorry when it has been too late.

    SPIRITUAL G1FTS

In all ages of the world the founders of relig-ious systems-Indian, Chinese, Egyptian, Jewish, orChristian, have attempted to teach the unfolding of theNatural, Spiritual, and Celestial nature in Man. TheJewish Bible and Testament abound with spiritualteachings, which thousands of yca.rs previously wereto be found in the Sanscrit writings. We find them iothe Indian Vedas and the Chinese Bible; at later periods in the Egyptian teachings, sculpture, and paintings;and were also taught by the Persian wise men ormagicians. Before explaining the nature of Psychicor Spiritual gifts, I will quote a few passages from theNew Testament bearing on the subject. Paul says inthe first Epistle to the Corinthians (chap. ii. 13-15):"Which things also we speak not in the words whichman's wisdom teacheth, comparing spiritual thingswith spiritua1." "But the natural man receivest notthe things of the spirit of God, for they are foolish-ness unto him; neither can he know them, becausethey are spiritually discerned," "But he that is spir-itual judgeth al! things, yet he himself is judged of noman,"

    THE UNSEEN WORLD

If a man die shall he live again? is a question thathas puzzled a great many of the world's greatest think-ers. Did ever a spiritual pilgrim return and assure hismortal friends that he still lived, or is there any meansby which ,ve can prove a conscious continuity of lifebeyond the grave? The spiritual answers "Yes," butthe skeptic does not believe, and demands proof--posi-tive proof.

I can do no better than reveal to the anxious en-quirer the result of my personal investigations in thefield of spiritual research, which have been very ex-tensive and has taken a number of years of hard study.Beginning by studying the lowest forms of biologicallife to the highest phases of human life, through thevarious chemical and evolutionary stages of life, growth, and development, onward to the metaphysi-cal, ethereal, and psychological realms of the spirit-ual spheres of the Hunseen world." Some people thinkthat they have to die before they can get to the unseenworld, or heaven, or hell, or eternity, but that idea iserroneous. We are in eternity now, and we always

have been, and we always shall be, whether we wantto be or not.

It does not matter whether we look upon our bodyas material or spiritual, because there is no completeannihilation of either our body, soul, or spirit. It isutterly impossible; there is no philosophy, ancient ormodern, that teaches it. We always have existed, andwe shall continue to do so, only in a different way, andwe can commune with the departed under the rightpsychological laws if we so desire. By the study ofchemistry and physics we have enormous avenues ofknowledge opened out to us, and their truths cannotbe gainsaid. We can see the various chemical changesand compounds taking place, and it is alI brought aboutby "law," there is no such thing as "chance." Whatwe calI the supernatural to-day may become the naturalto-morrow. When we study the works of Tyndal on"Electricity, Sound, Light and Heat," along with theworks on "Natural History" by Huxley and Darwin,we get a knowledge of the real state of things, but wemust use our own reasoning powers after we havestudied the material, and study the spiritual. It hasbeen said that mind is superior to matter, but wehave to be very careful what we call mind. Thisworld is only the world of sense, as we "sense" it bythe nerves of touch, sight, taste, smell, and hearing.I f we look at a man, we do not realIy see the man,we only "sense" him by the mind. It is the mind that

can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell, so we have tobe very careful and study this world from a psycho-logical standpoint as well as a physical to get at a trueunderstanding. We owe a great deal of our knowledge and wisdom

to millions of spirits that have passed on; they havebeen a great help to us, we could not have managedvery well without them.We are all composed of the same primary chemical

    AUTOMATIC WRITING

To become an automatic writing medium, it is nec-essary to sit at a table with a pencil and some notepaper. Hold the pencil as if about to write; a feelingof numbness or trembling will come over the hand, the pencil will begin to move, and in a short time youwill be able to write and answer questions that may beput to you, either mentally or in sealed packets by per-sons that you may sit for. To develop this power maytake a few weeks. Some persons develop sooner thanothers. It is the best to sit about twice a week. Every-thing should be quiet, and the mind kept passive. Insome instances the spirit communicating has given in-formation on various points, places, and things. thatwere altogether unknown to the medium. It is a veryvaluable means of ascertaining whether one's rela-tives, friends. or acquaintances in foreign parts arewell or ill.

The writing may not be very good at first, but it im-proves as the medium develops. Some mediums canwrite beautiful poetry, and in some cases music, whenunder control. Handel, the great music composer,

    17

  • wrote the "Messiah" through being under control. Hethought he saw God and the angels, and also the open-ing of the heavens. His hymns and music are full ofspiritual and inspirational power, especially the "Halle-lujah Chorus." A great amount of information onvarious subjects may be gleaned from a good auto-matic writing medium. I have seen persons thatcould not read or write in the natural state; but whenthey have practiced automatic writing, have in a veryshort time been able to write short sentences and an-swer variol1s questions. Sometimes the writing hasbeen bard to decipher, but it has been found to becorrect, although the spelling has been faulty, but thatdoes not matter. Others have been able to draw vari-ous pictures. The illustrations in this book have beendrawn by a clever young medium. He is highly sensi-tive, and when he commences on a drawing he sayshe feels something guide his hand, and he follows outany impression thus received until the picture is fin-ished. Some can paint the most beautiful pictureswhen under control, and in some cases they can paintpictures of people that have passed on, and who havebeen completely unknown to the medium.

In some cases "independent writing" is producedsimply by having a pen and ink and some paper on. atable and writing a question, and the answer has beenwritten without the aid of any person; but there mustbe some invisible power at work to be able to account

    TEST CASES IN AUTOMATIC WRITING

On Plate II., Fig. [, is a drawing of the skull of ajudge, with the words "Have no dealings with lawbusiness." That was written for a lady who was introuble connected with a dispute about the price ofsome deeds belonging to some property. She was ad-vised to have no dealings with law business; but shetook no notice, and went on with the case, and lost over$500. A solicitor said he would make the deeds outfor $25, but there was more work than he anticipated, and he charged $50. She said she would not pay it,and went to another solicitor.
