A Message
So my
alarm goes off in the morning twenty to seven and I
look at the time and think, “I can have an-other 10 minutes sleep” I wake up again
check the time…… WHAT!!! Only 10 minutes
to get ready. Rushing to get dressed, I put on my leggings, top and cardy, have a bite of
toast and dash out the house. What do you know; forgot my Homework, it‟s in for today
as well and I can‟t go back cause I‟m gonna be late for my first lesson! Unsuprisingly I
just missed my bus and have to end up get-
ting the late one. “Im gonna be late I‟m gonna be late!” The bus pulls up at the sta-
tion and I briskly walk (well it‟s more of a quick jog) to school. Finally I reach the elec-
tronic doors I think to myself “Please let my
finger print work, it‟s so embarrassing when it doesn‟t… ( a few seconds goes by with me
anxiously waiting, others join me and the pressure builds for my finger print to work)
……Phew, it works!” In college now I stand in the social area and I completely forget what
lesson I have, right lets see Friday morn-
ing….. lesson‟s been cancelled …. Lessons been CANCELLED!!! Yes, I don‟t have a les-
son, I forgot my homework so I‟m gonna get kicked out of my next lesson AND I could
have had a lie in ! Sound familiar??!! :)
Sound familiar??!! :)
It all started in bed one night before college. I
wanted something that would look good on my UCAS and also to imprint my name on Wood-
house grounds. I wanted to kill two birds with one stone. But stopping to think of the possible
outcomes I realised that the worse that could
happen is not succeeding and people mocking my attempt for a couple of weeks. I took the
risk anyway. Ideas flowed into my mind as I sat on the bus staring at a lifeless magazine I bor-
rowed from my dad‟s office. The only problem was that it was written by grown-ups hence
boring. What I thought was that I know young
people can come up with better ideas and what‟s more, for FREE.
I began my quest by discussing my idea with Mr Patel, my patron, and he gave me the motiva-
tion I needed. From there I went to spend some
time getting an opinion from Richie –the fa-mous friendly man we see around college - on
where to go next. He said that I should see Mrs Summers, who completely approved of the
idea. I‟d hit the jackpot. Fortunately I also found a small group of students who gave me
hope that the magazine would be a success. So
through lots of hard work and preparation I present to you, The WoodPecker Maga-
zine.

Every year the BAFTAs
gives movie-goers the
chance to see their fa-
vourite stars walk the
carpet- for free! Of
course, though there is
always a catch; wrist-
bands to the event were
given out at 8am Sunday
21st Feb causing the cra-
ziest and most
dedicated fans
(especially those Twi-
light fans who heard
Robert Pattinson and
Kristen Stewart
were attend-
ing) to queue
a ridiculous
amount of 32
hours! Arriv-
ing there at
6am. I was
fortunately given a wristband and told to come back at 3pm to be let into the carpet area. When the clock hit 3pm thousands of people were queuing to be let into the car-pet areas. The venue itself took three days to prepare and was truly magnificent! They had a rain cover covering the press so
our dear stars didn‟t get wet and there were lights every-where illuminating the whole of Covent Garden. The turnout was-n‟t disappointing either- stars such as Kate
Winslet, Noel Clarke, Matt Dillon, James Cameron, Mickey Rouke, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart all
turned up. Despite the amazing buzz, the organisers plot-ted against the 32 hour awaiting fans; telling Twilight-ers a silver wristband guaranteed them a better view. How-ever, the result: our favourite vampires arriving late and walking past us. So we were slightly disappointed in the rain and cold until the day was saved when a certain member of the Royal Family sur-prised us all…Prince William walked the carpet! Posed for photos and shook my hand, yes I re-peat shook my hand, mind you let me tell you he has very soft hands!

Film of the month. Review:
By Naomi Hunt.
Whiz, bang, smack! That‟s the sort of fun, fast and furious action that will undoubtedly have you gripped to your seats whilst watching “The Crazies”, literally one of the most fanatical movies of all time. Unlike the usual predict-able action/horror movies, “the Cra-zies” really does make you wonder what the hell is going to happen next. Starring Timothy Oly-
phant, Radha Mitchell
and Joe Anderson, the
story revolves around
two policeman and their
wives fighting for survival
after a government plane
packed with lethal chemi-
cals accidentally crashes in
a nearby lake – in a small
community in the
state of Texas.
The chemicals con-taminate the drink-ing water; trans-forming the locals into blood-sucking,
crazed killers – that will do anything for human flesh. The locals who have not been contaminated must do anything it takes to survive. The acting in the film is really remarkable, and the use of effects is exemplary.
The horror scenes are so realistic that the viewer is left wondering whether
or not the Film Board
Classification Society
have classed it wrong,
and were meant to class
it as an 18. Whilst
watching the film, you
will encounter atomic
bombs, explosions, mur-
ders, and self sacrifices
that really blow
your mind.
Overall, “the
crazies” is a
really great film
and I really rec-
ommend you to see it.

RIP. ALEXANDER MCQUEEN Spring - Summer 2010
By Tammy Olobo
On the 3rd February 2010, the Eve of his mother‟s funeral, Alexander McQueen, a leading UK fashion de-signer was pronounced dead. Police arrived at his £640,000 London flat to find a note and that he had hanged himself. Consequently, later a coroners in-quest gave the cause of his death as suicide. His line McQ, due to be showcased at New York Fashion Week had to be cancelled and the fashion industry devas-tated having lost one of its „brightest stars‟. At just 40 his death can only be described as a true tragedy.

THE CHECKED SHIRT
Spotted around college This is a simple and stylish look for either sex that you can wear to college or even on a night out. Wear with jeans for a laid-back look.
Variations with hoods or as a jacket are also good. To be honest, it‟s pretty hot on guys and on girls too.
Most importantly, have fun and don‟t take yourself or
what you wear too seriously, have fun with it and wear what you like. Be comfortable and you
won‟t go wrong! Here are a few of my
favourites from the high street!
1) Topman Purple check shirt hoody around £36
2) Topshop Hoxton Oversize Check Shirt around £28
3) All Saints. Dakota Short Gilet around £75

Miscellaneous It’s
It's March! The clocks go back at the end of the month and sum-mer begins! Yeah J. Before that happens there are so many days, events and funny facts to get through that will hopefully keep
you entertained until exam time. In March there's; Easter (chocolate day for the non-religious), Pie Day (apparently the 1st Wednesday in March), World Maths Day (March 14th). OK. Mother‟s Day is March 14th don‟t forget- your mum won‟t be pleased! Finally, there‟s St Patrick‟s Day (March 17th),World Water Day (March 22nd) and even Pol-ish-Hungarian friendship day (March 23rd).
I'm sure the most important thing about March is the fact that there are only 2-3 months until exams...already! (I'm sure after parents evening no-one was allowed to forget it). It seems like yesterday, it was Sep-tember 4th and everyone in lower 6th was out in the quad eating lunch with people they'd never seen in their life. But now here we are. First set of mock exams done and another set to go before the big ones. As Facebook put it "Exams comin' up but are you gonna pass doe?” The only way to avoid being one of those unable to answer is to seriously hit the books! Anyways, did you know that a sin-gle chocolate chip can provide enough energy for an adult human to walk 150 feet? Why doesn‟t that seem the case with the chocolate chip cookies they sell in the social area? I swear when I‟m tired and don‟t want to go to a les-son I eat one...and still feel the same. Is that just me? Chocolate can actually help with both depression and high blood pressure. Well did you know, a chocolate festival is being held from the 26th to the 28th of March on the Southbank or the Thames, so if you‟re not too stuffed from Easter or sick of the sight of chocolate it‟s the perfect
place for all you chocoholics. There will be chocolate making workshops and demonstra-tions, master chocolatiers displaying their talents. If you‟re after satisfaction for your ears, some of the coun-tries best artists are playing gigs all round London in March. For example, on the 20th of March at Wem- bley Arena – 50 Cent and on the 27th of March, the Arc-tic Monkeys will be at the Royal Albert Hall. The very day after, hoping they can make your hearts beat again are JLS at the same venue. Of course there are many more gigs and tours happen-ing in London throughout March so you can take your pick of the finest mu-sic the world has to offer, right in your own hometown.

T o walk or to fly?
I know that sounds like an inane question but everyday we're getting closer and closer to super-humanism. The rapidly expanding Park-our (“The physical discipline of training to overcome any obstacle within one's path”) culture in London, Europe and the world is contaminat-ing the definition of extreme sports.
think, like children." PK has become infectious with young people across the world. For me, personally, Parkour
and „Freerunning‟ (a mixture
of PK, martial arts, dance
and more) were just stunts
and aspects of entertain-
ment in films such as District
13 (Banlieue 13), Die Hard
and even The Mirror‟s Edge
demo on my cousins PS3,
but it was only when I ar-
moves; became much more actively involved. But it amazed me how beginners like Lish, managed to pluck up the courage to execute their first flip, but it seemed that the sense of achievement, some-what overcame the fear, “You‟re always scared; all the time...it‟s just the more you do it; the less you‟re scared.” Over the past few months, what I thought was just a sport, has proven itself to be be-yond a form of exercise, but a form of expression which not only pushes your body to extremes, but challenges your mind. This article however, just sums up just one cell within the body of Parkour. Videos and channels on Youtube (Team Freerun, Snow-joker93) as well as films and video games, can help you explore the world of Freerunning and PK just a little bit more. I once read, Parkour
is not a sport. A sport
has rules and we are
bound by none.
Although Parkour is frequently com-
pared to martial arts, instead of the
traceur (practitioner of PK) defend-
ing him/herself, they look for a get-
away route and finding the fastest
way to get from point A to B.
L'art du déplacement or as its more commonly known PK, was founded by David Belle, who was influenced greatly by his heroic fire fighting father. With a pas-sion for martial arts and gym-nastics, he used his skills to establish the art of Parkour, and continued his journey alongside Sébastien Foucan and other close friends in Paris “The whole town was there for us; there for Parkour. You just have to look; you just have to

Stressing out over exams.
I‟m already behind on all my work so
I‟m dreading the thought
of revision. And to make
things worse, all my friends
seem to be do ing fine. I
really dunno what to do to
make things any better.”
First of all you need
to relax.
Yes exams are get-
ting closer but there is
still actually ages for
you to de-stress and
catch up on everything.
The first move would be
to go to your subject teachers and ask
them for any advice to help you out.
And the second step would be to or-
ganise yourself. You‟ll find every-
thing so much easier if you
catch up and simplify
everything.
“I seriously need to save some
cash. I work and stuff but
my money doesn‟t get me
far. What can I do to save
some of it?”
There are some easy tips to sav-
ing some money. At lunch, in-
stead of going to the canteen or
going outside, bring in a packed
lunch. That will save you at
least a tenner a week. Another
idea would be to save money on
clothes. What‟s the point of buy-
ing new stuff all the time? No-
one remembers what you wear
anyway. If you were to down-
size on these two aspects, you
would be able to save a
lot of money.
“I‟ve started going
out with this
new guy. How
do I ask him to
get checked
out, you know,
down there?”
Just be
straight
with him. Tell
him the truth and if
he refuses he obvi-
ously isn‟t worth it
and is probably
carrying something
dodgy anyway.
“I used to go to the same school as my best mates, but now I go to Wood House and they don‟t come here, I feel like I‟m losing contact. What can I do to be back to how it was?” It‟s always very hard when
friends separate but
because you will have been friends
for longer, your friends will always
be in contact with you. Although it
may seem like they are drifting
away but seriously, don‟t worry.
But if you really want to act, sim-
ply go for a coffee once in a while
or call them in the evening for a
catch up.

The main story this week has been on
Prime Minister Gordon Brown being
branded a „bully‟ after the „National
Bullying Helpline‟ disclosed that em-
ployees of Number 10 had called the
helpline for advice. These claims
were furthered by the publication of
Andrew Rawnsley‟s book „The End
However, after hard work in tack-ling key issues such as the economy and education, Gordon Brown was win-ning key debates, and was growing in popularity. Labour Party‟s spin doctors worked round the clock to recover the damaged image of the government and its Prime Minister. Latest figures reveal that Labour are just 2 points be-hind the Conservatives. But could the latest PR disaster add another twist to this intriguing election campaign? Even if the allegations are true, the Prime Minister‟s role is, as a Whitehall

Leaders of the two main opposition parties – Nick Clegg of the Liberal Democrats and David Cameron of the Con-servatives – have called for an official inquiry into the matter, which has seriously dented the Prime Minister‟s image. In the lead up to the General Election this May, this negative media at-tention could have devastating effects to the Labour Party‟s cam-paign for re-election. As recently as October, it seemed that the Conservatives would runaway with popularity come the Election, holding nearly a 20-point majority in opinion polls.

Brown has so many re-sponsibilities and positions he has to maintain and man-age that it‟s under-standable he throws a temper tantrum or two – he wouldn‟t be human if he didn‟t. And the unwelcome burden of a recession in recent times hasn‟t helped either. Plus with an ever-more ravenous media circus around him, the Prime Minister has to make decisions on his feet and answer to the public 24/7. Is this really the job of one man? Is he really a bully?
He‟s just doing his job.

SWAG-how much it really
By Vanessa Brobbey As teenagers, image has become our main
focus. It seems we are more con-cerned with our appearance than we are about the state of our bank balance or our educa-tion. Many of us girls (you know who you are) spend considerable amounts of money on clothes we can‟t afford or on unnecessary things that have no use like bloody lip-gloss when Vaseline is available; I have to admit, I do this as well. I hate to say it, but this problem is mainly found with the ladies. The amount of money we spend on getting our nails done and our hair made up is start-ing to put a strain on our poor par-ents. I know there‟s no harm in mak-ing an effort to look our best, but come on girls, we know we can do our hair and nails ourselves. On a happier note, I‟m happy to say
that the boys like to spend cash that
they don‟t have.
You know when guys act as if they
„have money in the bank‟ or they
boast about how they‟re „ballin‟, trust
me ladies, EMA has helped them a
lot! Guys are now spending silly
amounts of money on trainers or on
their True Religion jeans. We know
they look good but seriously, why
spend £260 on one pair of jeans
when you can buy an outfit with
that?!
This silliness is
what
separates
the girls
from the
boys;
we‟re a
lot
smarter
with our
money than
they are. To
push the knife
in a little bit
more, have you
noticed how
much time guys
spend on their
Xbox or PS3s
and how much
they spend on
games and the
accessories
that
come
with it?
Just to
give you
ladies a
bit of an in-
sight into the debt-filled
world of boys, take a
look at what gaming
and „swagger‟ costs
18
To level the playing field, I think we should be fair to the guys
and reveal how much us girls can spend on our „must haves‟...
To be fair, guys are just as bad girls and I
think its time we all started tighten-
ing up our belts a little bit.
I don‟t even want to alert the boys as to how much we
spend on shoes!

How can I find a volunteering place-

There are loads of volunteering op-

so it‟s simply a matter of just ask-

There are also lots of websites developed just for young peo-ple who are looking to volun-teer, some of which are: www.do-it.org.uk

Getting worried about Life after college?
Unsure as to what you want to do after college? Wondering if Uni is your only option? Well there are loads of options whether Uni is something unappealing to you.
Not sure if uni is for you? There are loads of people who opt not to go to uni and still develop great careers in
other ways. Organisations like „Not Going to UNI‟ have held talks in college and are a
group which talk about the alternative choices to Uni and show how opting out can be the better option.
But is Uni an option for you? For lots of us, Uni is the most likely place we will go after Woodhouse. Although this
seems like the fairly standard option, it can be a good idea to look into the courses you
want to go into now. But if you‟re still not sure what course is for you, luckily there are
opportunities available: uni taster courses which are held at different Unis and can last a
few hours or a whole day, giving you a feel for what the course would include and Uni
life from day to day. There are also summer schools which take place at some Unis,
which offer a similar experience as the taster days, but usually last week. If neither
taster is for you though, Uni open days are also another good way to find out more in-
formation on different Unis and their specific courses. Usually the Uni website can be
very helpful on information about open days. Taster days, summer schools and open
days can be an insight into Uni life and courses but they can also help your applications
stand out – as it shows initiative and understanding.
Want more info? For more information on any of the issues raised in this section go to
the Careers Resource Area, which has masses of useful information on volunteering and life after college, with several members of staff who you can talk to about this and other work-related issues. Or alterna-
tively talk to your teachers or personal tutor.

Top 5 CV tips:

Struggling with writing up the “perfect” CV?
Need any tips on how to make your CV stand out from the crowd? Well, here are 5 simple and easy steps on creating your own CV -
which can hopefully grab the attention of your fu- ture employer.
Start with a Qualifications Summary - a summary of your top qualifica- tions and personality is often more effective than an objec- tive statement.
Gather facts for each section. Example: personal details such as your
name, address. Then all your education history, employment history and interests. Make sure to include all the relevant details in order to impress
your employer.
Think about the skills you have and how you can showcase these skills You are going to have to back up what you say about yourself. It‟s no good
saying you have good communication skills, without an example of how that can be portrayed. Think of your own experiences in school, when
dealing with people or even speaking to a family member. More evidence will make you look better!
Make sure to include a suitable reference. This is where your employer will con-
tact and ask any relevant questions about you. Your reference should be a re-liable adult, preferably your head of year or form tutor.
Drafting and Editing. Before you send off your CV check that it shows the employer you have:
• The skills/experience needed for the job
• The personal qualities required by the company and position
• An understanding of the job requirements
Redrafting your CV a couple times is com-pletely normal; make sure you are happy
with the result. It may be worth emailing it to a teacher or an adult, just to get a second
opinion.

Are you interested in, or thinking of applying to Oxford or Cambridge Uni-versity?
Yes?.....Well there are going to be a series of events organised to give you in-formation on Oxford and Cambridge later this year.
Ashmole School 17th March7pm – 9pm. - The meeting is very interesting and worthwhile, helping prospectus university applicants get a better under-standing of decisions they should make and opportunities available for them. Even though it is at Ashmole School, it is for all students attending sixth
form in Barnet. If you would like to attend the meeting, please email Mrs Grice
([email protected]) with your name and tutor group. Connexions will then send out further information. There is more information

Player of the Month- February
2010
DIDIER DROGBA
[BY JEORGE BIRD]
The Ivorian forward has enjoyed a superb month in front of goal to take him to within touching dis-tance of Wayne Rooney in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot. Drogba struck the vital equaliser against Hull at the KC Stadium early in the month be-fore single-handedly destroying title chal-lengers Arsenal by scoring both goals in the victory at Stamford Bridge. Drogba then hit another brace against relegation-threatened Wolves to put Chelsea four points clear at the top of the table and to cap off a fantastic month that empha-sised his stunning power and skill at the top level.
Time for a change-
why more young
people should par-
ticipate in sport.
We seem to
keep hearing the same
message all the time
from so called „experts‟:
young people do not
participate in sporting
activities regularly
enough and dwindle
away far too many
hours watching televi-
sion or playing on their
PlayStation or com-
puter. The statistics ap-
pear to back this up,
too. In a recent survey
conducted on the Great
Ormond Street Hospi-
tal‟s Children First for
Health website, of the
1637 young people aged 11-16 who were asked the question „do you believe you do enough physical activity per week?‟, 840 respondents answered „no‟. So why do so many youngsters refrain from indulging them-selves in regular sporting activ-ity? Some feel they just aren‟t good enough to compete with those who seem destined for a future at the top level, whilst others simply cannot be both-ered and would rather occupy their time doing something less physically demanding. A change clearly needs to be
made and, even by encouraging
yourself to partake in a morning
run, you would be working your
way towards the minimum one
hour of exercise per day sug-
gestion from the government.

And 4th spot goes
too..................? The race to fourth spot in this year‟s pre-
mier league is one of the most frantic
and changeable battles to date. With
four teams all capable of taking the
final, much sought after, champions
league place the home straight of the
2009/10 season promises to be a great
one. But who have you got your
money on?
LIVERPOOL
Liverpool are the seasons surprise pack-
age, but for all the wrong reasons. The
performances this year have justified
previous claims that they are a team of
two men, and with Fernando Torres, the
Reds‟prolific striker, having constant in-
jury problems the lack of strength in
depth has been evident. Rafeal Benitez‟s
decision to not sign a striker during the
summer has meant young David N‟gog
has been left to fill the large goal
scoring boots Torres, and, as many
Liverpool fans would agree, a team
fighting for the champions league
cannot rely on a an inexperienced
youth the guide them. Steven Ger-
rard, even in this world cup year,
has not been in the sort of form that
has come to be expected of him and
new signing Alberto Aquilani has not
been given enough game time to be
able to have an impact on the side. Al-
though Liverpool have begun to regain
the form that is expected of them, it is
was a numerous number of dire results
that have meant they are included in the
scrap for fourth.
TOTTENHAM
Of all the teams in the fight for
fourth, Tottenham look the
strongest. Every year the North
London outfit offer much prom-
ise, but always fail at the
last hurdle. This year the
squad looks much stronger,
playing the type of football that you
expect to see from teams above
them. The key to the success is the
forward partnership of Crouch and
Defoe, who are only second in goals
to the Chelsea front line. Totten-
ham‟s naivety has caused them
problems unlike Liverpool, who have
players with the experience for the
fight. The supporters have been in
this situation so many times before
that they may be
expecting the
form to drop, but
if Tottenham can
continue to play
the football that
they are capable
of, passing the
ball around like an
Arsenal-of-old.

MANCHESTER CITY
A team who have spent a tremen-
dous sum of money for success, may
be slightly dissatisfied with their table
position. Although the team is
crammed with talent, defensive frail-
ties have meant they are battling for
fourth. Manchester City fans will
agree that the back four looked more
stable when they were playing their
second choice defenders, proving
that signing Kolo Toure and Jolean
Lescott, two of the premier league‟s
best defenders respectively, are not
as solid as a duo. Like Tottenham,
Manchester City have never been in
this position before, and they don‟t
seem to have the team chemistry of
the other sides.
ASTON VILLA Bound with the best defensive record in the
league, it is obvious why Aston Villa are in
the position they are. Gabrial Abonglahor has
finally obtained the finishing ability needed to
be a top premier league striker. Martin O‟Neill
has made many acute signings in the transfer
windows, all players that would get in the
first teams of other premier league sides. Of
all the sides in contention, Aston Villa have
the best record against the big three. A tricky
team to play against, Aston Villa are the one
side who are bound to continue the form
they have found until the end of the season

‘Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way that little else can. It speaks to people in a language that they understand. It laughs in the face of all kinds of dis-crimination’- Nelson Man-dela
At Woodhouse we are known for
our sporting abilities; as a college
we unite to participate in various
sporting activities. Recently, girls
that attend the college came to-
gether to form our first ever fe-
male basketball team; they were
aided in training by Matt and
Rory (U6) who generously gave
up there Tuesday afternoons to
train them. The girls persevered
and were rewarded with victory
after participating in the Barnet
Schools Female Tournament.
However, the highlight of their play-ing season so far, came when they played La Swap. The La Swap team are known for their league players, who have been playing basketball for a long time; despite the pres-sures placed on the Woodhouse girls, they came together effectively as a team. The college- as a whole- encouraged them by coming along to the game and showing their sup-port. Overall the game was hard and the scores were extremely close, with La Swap in the lead, however it could be seen that Woodhouse were being pushed to their limits. The game took a drastic turn in the final minute when Woodhouse player Vivian decided to take a three pointer; Vivian landed Woodhouse their success increasing their score by one point. For the remaining of the game Woodhouse put hard de-fence on La Swap to assure the scores remained the same. The girls did a tremendous job indeed and their success was well deserved. Woodhouse boys watch your back because the girls are currently unde-feated- and stealing all your glory!!
