FAST FACTS...
57% of NJ high school students HAVE NOT
consumed alcohol in the past 30 days, according to
the New Jersey DOE’s Student Health Survey.
A Critical Eye
Students in English 11 embarked on a project
to explore critical review. Ridgewood juniors in
Lynn Moore’s, Colleen Contreras’, and Cynthia
DeTora’s classes collaborated with librarians,
Diana Capetola and Rose Griffith, to help stu-
dents select non-fiction books.
Students were then instructed on where to find
critical reviews for their selections. Categories
included writers' lives, scientists, leaders, crime
and criminals.

1/10/2014 A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
Alumni Artists
On Wednesday, January 8, the Ridgewood High
School Art Department held its Ninth Annual
Alumni Show Reception. It featured art from
former RHS students.
The Alumni Art Show is open to all former stu-
dents and parents of current students. The ex-
hibit may be viewed in the Carroll Art Gallery,
Room 137, until after school today.
Midterm Schedule
Due to the way the calendar fell this year, mid-
terms and finals have not been evenly split by
the weekends that fall between the two, four
days of exams.
Unfortunately, to run the schedule any other
way, would not have worked with the days pre-
ceding the quarter's end. To alter the schedule
to account for a more even split on exam days
would have reduced the number of teaching
and learning days that students received prior
to midterms.
Chris McCullough and Kellie Conforth pose with
alumni artists whose work is currently being dis-
played in the Ridgewood High School Art Gallery.

RHS POLICY CORNER: Parent Notifying School of Student Absence
The parent or guardian must contact the attendance office (201-670-
2800 or [email protected]) by 2:00 p.m. on the day of
a student’s absence from any class or classes. Students who do not
follow this procedure will receive an unexcused absence (cut) in each
class missed and may be assigned an afterschool detention for each
class missed.
Students who are missing any class for a medical or dental appoint-
ment must provide a note from the medical/dental office to the
attendance office on his/her return to school. Students who are ill
during the school day must report to the School Nurse. The School
Nurse will then contact the parent/guardian.
Participants in the Ridgewood High School Teen LEADS program listen intently as County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli discusses his view of leadership.
The Ridgewood Teen LEADS program participated in its second site visit this Tuesday for Law and Public Safety Day. Students spent the day visiting both the Public Safety Institute in Mah-wah and the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack and listening to speakers, including the Bergen County Prosecutor. Highlights of the trip included walking through a fire-fighter training facility while it was ablaze and touring the jail amongst active inmates. The day was exciting and eye-opening for all who participated.
The Teen LEADS program is modeled on the successful adult program, Bergen LEADS, which strives to teach leadership and community responsibility. This is the first year of the Teen LEADS program at Ridgewood High School.
