    SobrietyA personal interpretation

Internal strength meant a sense of equanimity,

The opening line connects directly to the Stalkers attitude ofAll things being equal. It is as a result of congruently

maintaining this attitude that true equanimity is attained. No longer is there the need to prove the value of things, ofevaluating one thing as being more important than anyother. There is simply Perception.

    almost a sense of indifference,

The indifference spoken of is that of being inaccessible. Apositive attitude that allows for the Silence often alluded tobeing made a fact and in the light of this Silence,Everything Is Possible.

a feeling of being at ease,

As a result one attains a relaxed attitude and a sense of ease, the ease that is alluded to by the Stalker applying The SecondMood of Stalking Cunning. Only in the light of this ease Do

    the powers that guide, aid.

but, above all, it meant a natural and profound bent forexamination, for understanding.

Most importantly it allows for true exploration, the joy ofexamining and understanding the unknown, knowing fullwell we can but scratch the surface. The attitude of Whats

in it for me? has no place here for Self Importance and SelfReflection have been abandoned. In the light of thisunbiased examination can take place and true

understanding be arrived at for our explorations arestripped of the agendas of gain.

The New Seers called these traits of character Sobriety.

The inaccessibility, the equanimity and sense of indifferencethat might also be called equality. The sense of ease. The lossof Self Importance and Self Reflection. In short attaining tothe Perceptual level of Sorcery and Sorcerers the New Seerscalled characteristics of Sobriety.

We are perceivers. The world that we perceive though is anillusion. It was created by a description that was told to ussince the moment we were born.

We the luminous beings, are born with two rings of power, but we only use one to create the world. That ring which ishooked very soon after we are born, is Reason, and its

companion is Talking. Between the two they concoct andmaintain the world.

So, in essence the world that your reason wants to sustain itis the world created by a description and its dogmatic andinviolable rules, which the reason learns to accept anddefend.

The secret of the luminous beings is that they have another

ring of power which is never used, the Will. The trick of theSorcerer is the same trick as the average man. Both have adescription, one, the average man, upholds it with hisreason, the other, the Sorcerer, upholds it with his will. Bothdescriptions have their rules and the rules are perceivable, but the advantage of the Sorcerer is that Will is moreengulfing than Reason.

    The Nature of Attention

What you pay Attention to, pays Attention to you

    The 1st Attention

    The 1

    st

Attention is a dream, for it isthe sum total of what we call the self.A self that is effectively no morethan an idea. It operates withinvaried environments, generates avariety of behaviours. Acquires andapplies divers skills and strategies.Develops and upholds beliefs and

values. Maintains a unique and distinct sense of itself andeven evolves beliefs as to how it connects to others and theworld at large. We support its beliefs and values as if realand, of course they are, for they are all we have to hold onto in the ocean of mystery that is the true nature of ourbeing.

Consider a child. How does it learn? What are the stages of

its learning? And more importantly what was its natureprior to learning? We have all been there and yet we are, with rare exceptions, completely unconscious of this part ofour existence. Could it be that we had no cognitiveawareness?

This aspect of our nature as human beings called FirstAttention encompasses not only everything one is aware ofin the present moment but also everything that one has aname for.

  • 7/30/2019 A Toltec Witness Section 3

    6/36

The First Attention is an unsurpassable tool at our disposal. Its makes meaning of what we experience in the world ofeveryday life and organises this information in a coherentand cohesive way. The way this data is structured will oftenbe influenced by our cultural, educational, social and

religious conditioning. This in turn will give rise to ourbelief system which will form our map of reality.

Many are unaware of the potential that lies within the FirstAttention and consider this Attention as a stupid, witlesspart, as an annoyance, as an obstruction to be rid of at theearliest possible opportunity. It is not unusual for some of usto pass through experiences in life almost in a dismissive

way, without realising that we have exquisite tools on boardto examine and understand what we are and have beentravelling through. Instead, we allow an accumulation ofhalf-baked ideas to float around in our mind with no specificoutcome or direction, giving rise to an untidy and confusingcognitive environment. Because this impoverishednourishment is all it knows, the First Attention isdiminished and finds itself no choice other than becoming

petty and tyrannical, guarding its food jealously.

The function nominalised as our First Attention has beenstifled through our social conditioning, which in turndictates our behaviours and our thought processes andlimits our perception in accordance with the parameters setby this conditioning. The boundaries placed on ourperception thus creates a shield that is rarely, if ever

pierced within our lifetime. If, as a race, we were educated to utilise the already presentability of the First Attention to structure and make orderout of chaos, and fine tune these skills, the First Attentionwould respond by enhancing its cognitive expertise andprovide us with a deeper understanding and awareness ofour perception of the world and the real possibility at ourfingertips to connect to our true potential.

To re-awaken and call to the fore the inherent skills of theFirst Attention, requires the co-operation of the individual.

Someone who is prepared to make a concerted effort to askthose vitals questions about their limitless possibilities; toharness skills and behaviours that would match thisunfolding; to notice the evidence that lets them know thatindeed new information is being connected and finally, to

engender a deep cognitive understanding of how this processbrings about the results it does. Because learning is an on-going process, the awareness of how this process unfolds andthe evidence it unveils, snowballs into sharpening andmaking acute this function of the mind called the FirstAttention.

In a sense, the First Attention is the only tool we have. The

instrument that makes it possible for us to set the perceptualdials on the setting that will provide us with the vitalmultiple descriptions necessary to become free of our ownperceptual bias.

    The Second Attention

The Second Attention represents allthat is outside of the realm of FirstAttention and encompasses processeswe have no names for and that areexperienced as bodily feelings. One ofthe ways utilised to touch this aspectof our being is through theexploration of an experience with no

meaning. This process entails entering a state of notknowing and experiencing an awareness that is akin toSecond Attention. It is to be noted that in this state ofheightened awareness, one is able to observe and noticealready coded descriptions as totally new perceptions thathave no ready-made labels for them. Having an experiencewith no meaning presupposes entering an altered state, a

state where you cease to look and begin to See the essence ofthings. Seeing in this fashion is the ability that arises as aresult of functioning from Second Attention.

    8/36

Being in Second Attention enables you to perceive realitiesthat are above and beyond those set by the preconceivedstructures that have arisen through our social conditioningand deals specifically with the unknown and abstractaspects of our being. It is a perceptual reality that accesses

information hitherto unavailable and as a result, widens theparameters of reality in unimaginable ways.

The Second Attention is a source of knowledge, that filtersinformation and makes it available without you knowinghow you have drawn those conclusions it is often referredto as the place of silent knowledge. It is the function that isable to grasp symbols from the internal or external

environments and which has the expertise to makeconnections and meaning out of these environmental signalsand create a relationship between these gifts from theuniverse and your on-going experience.

The Second attention is a mysterious aspect of human beingsas perceiving creatures and through training, can beaccessed and utilised to not only enter into unimaginableand unheard of perceptual realities, but also in doing so, tobreak and extend in inconceivable ways our rigid agreed-upon boundaries.

    The Interface

    The Interface is the emergent

property that arises out of a welldeveloped First Attention and anensuing purposeful balanced andharmonious relationship between theFirst and Second Attentions. Thisrelationship can begin and continueto unfold through what is called theordering of the island of the Tonal.

This translates as, firstly, becoming more aware of internalthinking processes, noticing what is useful and vital, andwhat is not. Secondly, bearing in mind that there is a

  • 7/30/2019 A Toltec Witness Section 3

    9/36

positive intention within all that passes through thecognitive First Attention processes, and assessing andevaluating this information. Thirdly, considering thereframes that can be applied to what is considered to besuperfluous and proceeding in the full knowledge that what

is superfluous in one context may be vital in another.

Once the above steps are rehearsed and applied regularly, you not only order the island of the Tonal but alsostrengthen the First Attention through the acuteexamination and understanding of your internal processes. This process results in opening a channel of communicationwith Second Attention, whereby you can utilise your First

Attention - in the role of the Interface - not only to senddirectives to this larger unit of mind, but also considerapplying your awareness of First Attention processes tounpack and understand your unconscious competence.

A finely tuned and honed First Attention itself can serve asthe Interface between its cognitive processes and SecondAttention. With a strong First Attention, where awarenessand understanding of its inventory are a constant on-goingprocess of re-evaluation, gathering and updating ofinformation, can we use the First Attention as an Interface. This constant nurturing of the First Attention will enable us(a) to consider entering Second Attention in a way that willmaintain the ecology of the entire human organism and (b)upon shifting awareness back into the everyday awareness,to notice how elegantly the First Attention cognitively maps

the nature of what we experienced whilst perceiving realitythrough the unknown.

Methods of accessing and exercising the Interface arenumerous. The ones listed below serve as examples.

Active Dreaming constitutes an aspect of the interface.Dreaming Awake as it is sometimes called aligns theAttentions and as a result we begin to perceive systemically

    and holistically.

  • 7/30/2019 A Toltec Witness Section 3

    10/36

Setting Up Dreaming specifically and everyday dreamsgenerally also form an essential aspect of the interface.

Gazingestablishes connection, as an effective aspect of theinterface and in some respects constitutes an Active

Dreaming Format, employing as it does similar processes. Italso effectively sets up Stopping The World / InternalDialogue.

Metaphor and Story Telling specifically and languagegenerally facilitate the interface by virtue of the directionthat is set up within the system irrespective of the degree ofIntent involved. For this reason Stalkers use languageImpeccably and precisely for they are aware of the powerof directing the entire system into the context stated. Thereis only everyday talk and words, amongst everyday people,Stalkers by contrast know the power of words and use themappropriately and accordingly.

Finally, there is only Attention, and the descriptions Firstand Second Attentions are a very useful way in which tobegin to make inroads into noticing the different functionsof our mind, so that with this knowledge we may movetowards living every moment with the totality of ourselves.

    IntentComments concerning Intent

It has been clear to me for sometime, and becoming clearer in thelight of the present activities thatSorcery is solely dependant upon

Intent. What one brings into thepractice effectively makes it what itis. Whereas this is true of mostthings it is a fact emphasised very

clearly within Sorcery. Examining the diagram Metaframes of Sorcery Practice, See appendix 2, it is useful tonote the placement and what this implies of the statementIntending The Ring of Intent. It is at a higher logical level

and as such contains all lower level components. I realise, atthis time that all of the 2nd Attention practices I amapplying at this time, specifically Gazing, serve the soleoutcome, at this early stage, of activating the connectionwith Intent itself. It is like Dreaming into being TheDreaming Attention. Creating an environment for it. Doingthings appropriate to its nature. Developing the requisiteskills to fully engage it. Evolving the beliefs that support itand fulfilling its criteria on its terms. Being the Sorcerer inthe Doing of all of this and as a result connecting to andActualising The Dreaming Attention. A NeurologicalAlignment given the context of Sorcery. Intent is the motivepower. Intent, the power that supports and underpins allthings. It is by Intent alone that one is enabled to follow thispath up to and beyond a certain point. The Ring of Intent

is The aspect of the practice period to connect to and inorder to do that in a way that is not purely theoretical, involves unhooking oneself from The Ring of Reason. A

truly magnificent quest. All made possible by Intent. At theoutset it is a requirement to Intend Intent itself.

Two Rings of Power are known to exist. All beings possessthe one known as Reason. The world and its societies are

upheld by Reason and its kindred Thinking and Talking. Tounhook the Ring of Reason is a Sorcerers primaryendeavour to which he or she brings Dramatic Exertion. Insome respects this unhooking is a higher logical levelprocedure of Stopping The World, which in itself sets thestage. The Second Ring of Power is known to Sorcerers, it isThe Ring of Intent. The all consuming Self Importance ofan individual which is a by product of The Ring of Reason

makes accessing this ring all but impossible. Hence a Man ofKnowledge only becomes so when the Sorcerer within him orher has unhooked the one ring and accessed the other.

As mentioned above and repeated here I have begun tovocalise the call to Intent. It is stated that the primaryvehicles of Intent are the eyes and the use of the voice. Theeyes I have known of for some time and have developedpractices for enhancing this. The voice I have also known offor some time and in other contexts have learned how to usethe voice as a medium for inducing altered states withinmyself and others. It is the first time however that I havecalled forth Intent simply by vibrating the word itself. Upondoing so a vacuum of silence descends and I find it a usefulplace to begin and end a practice session in this way.

It has been said that there are three riddles within Sorcery.

The first is The Mastery of Awareness which is the riddle ofthe mind. The second is Stalking which is the riddle of theheart. And thirdly there is The Mastery of Intent which isthe riddle of the spirit. Sorcery has further been described asstages of accessing and finally utilising Intent. As such itsprocedures and practices can be said to have this primarypurpose in mind. Like so many teaching methods, whilstengaged in overt activity, covert outcomes are also beingprocessed. In the instance of Sorcery this covert outcome isthe development of the relationship between the practitionerand Intent.

Beckoned by the shine of the eyes. The true outcome ofSorcery - to Stalk Intent. The practices and abstracts beingthe means of diverting the mind into the belief that it isdoing something far more complex and as such valuable. This is how we, as humans tend to function, as such the

primary methodology of Sorcery is Trickery. The trick tomake the link to Intent active. All else is a very useful ruse.

The only important question is : Does this Path have aHeart? All paths are the same : They lead nowhere. Theyare paths going through the bush, or into the bush. In myown life I could say that I have traversed long, long paths, but I am not anywhere. My benefactors question hasmeaning now. If the path has a Heart, the path is good. If itdoesnt it is of no use. Both paths lead nowhere, but one hasHeart, the other doesnt. One makes for a joyful journey, as

long as you follow it, you are one with it. The other willmake you curse your life. One makes you strong, the otherweakens you.

    Gazing

Whilst Looking we simply engage inthe cognitive process known asthinking. We seek for patterns andmeanings, and we find them soconsistently that the world assumesa solid structure within our minds.Whilst Gazing we open the field andaccess a wider context. So what isinferred? Logically, Looking is part

of the 1st Attentions inventory whist Gazing pertains to theinventory of 2nd Attention. Todays practice has meexercising The Double, so to speak. Having configured The

Dreaming Attention, well at least its matrix, by fleshing itout through the processes known as visualisation andGazing, I began to move the Attention to different locationswithin the energy body. The first step is to locate itshabitual resting place, this makes itself known quite simplyby where your Attention comes to rest as a result of athorough internal inventory. Having located it, it becomespossible through Intent to relocate it to another point within

the energy body. Opening that point again by Intending theAttention to do so, it remains to notice what is to benoticed. I made four such shifts and as a result my internalperceptual fields varied greatly, in terms of feeling, energyand content. Upon completion, returning the Attention toits natural resting point is essential, if one is to be thorough.Sealing the Gate below the navel completes the practiceitself. Whilst sweeping the Gaze Left to Right etc. returns

you perceptually to the here and now.

Gazing continues to unfold by employing various objectscollected at random. Focussing the Attention on the one andprior to drifting away, pulling or sweeping the Attentionacross to another. This consolidates the Attention and in thisworld, continues to Set Up The Dream of this World, The

Stalkers Dream. It also rehearses consolidating theAttention in the world or worlds animated by Setting UpDreaming. In many respects Gazing is essential toDreaming as it prepares the attitude and territory.Dreaming unlike many components within Sorcery can beevasive. It is in its nature to be so. For this reason Gazing isthe means by which the Sorcerer can begin to StalkDreaming. The Spirit Animal exists as a dream within the

mind of a human, whilst also being the creator of the dreamin which the human dwells. This creature lives in a world Iam currently animating, one I return to regularly in orderto develop an appropriate relationship as well as theongoing learnings acquired. There is much to be learnedfrom Multiple Descriptions generally, and this onespecifically. Over the practice period it is my Intention toanimate and enter several Perceptual Worlds with twospecific Intentions in mind : 1 ] To partially release the Ringof Reason in this way, it is an exquisite way of acquiringthe ability of living between descriptions, which, at thistime I feel to be a Prerequisite of connecting to The Ring ofIntent. And 2 ] I am effectively exercising the muscles ofThe Dreaming Attention.

A written account of one of the processes I have learnt as a

result of practising Cunning. Stalking the DreamingAttention begins this way. A simple beginning and yetcrucial in the matter of Dreaming. It is essential to transferAttention into the Matrix upon which the Actualisationwill formulate itself, Dream itself into being. To do this isalso essential to loosen the grip of this world. Hence theanimation of Perceptual Worlds at this time. This process, atthis time is the most crucial 2nd Attention procedure Iperform and constitutes an aspect of the high Art ofStalking. The rest is Deliberate action. Dramatic Exertionand of course Intent.

4 Now place the Attention in the ears. First the left, thenthe right, then place it at the base of the skull.

5 Place the Attention at the gateway of the navel andIntend a luminosity of fibres to move outward from thispoint, moving to the surface of the skin and then to thesurface of the energetic skin. Thus forming the luminouscocoon.

6 Two Rings of Power, one at each foot. One Ring at thegroin, a Lunar disc. One upon the forehead, a Solar disc. Two Rings of Power, one within each palm.

14Place the Attention in the palm of the Left hand, Gazingthrough the left eye. [ focussing awareness on the left sidegenerally ] upon this palm a Ring of Power, a world, therealm of a vast jungle. Arboreal splendour. Vapour risesfrom the earth, perfumes of plant life redolent with

sensuality. Golden green sunlight filters through a canopyof green. Muscles stretch, back arches, claws extend. Ihave entered the world of my guardian and I begin toexplore.

15After an appropriate amount of time. By Intent, sweepthe Attention to the palm of the right palm, Gazingthrough the right eye. [ focussing awareness on the right

side generally ] Upon this palm a Ring of Power, a world,a realm of Silence. A burning Sun [ fire ] burns brightlywithin a sky of blue, clouds travel across the surface, vaporising and reforming. Breeze [ air ] plays within theleaves of a mighty tree, roots travel deeply into the soil [earth ] The tree stands beside a waterfall [ water ]. Aplace of peace, of calm. A place to collect energy, to takerest and dream. Taking this, and resting within the

embrace of the elements, I enter Silence and repose.

16By Intent sweep the Attention to the forehead, uponwhich a Ring of Power, a world. A world of Mysteryunfolds its first tenuous impressions, cascades downwardsand touches, embraces each of the worlds enteredpreviously. The beginning unfolds gently.

17Place the palm of the left hand over the navel, the righton top, sweep the eyes to the left, opening them as you do.Sweep the eyes to the right. Again to the left. Then lookdirectly ahead and enter this world, this moment, thisdream.

In one of the Perceptual Worlds I currently animate andvisit is the home of my Spirit animal. In this world I shedmy human form and enter that of another. Today, upon a

journey we climbed to the top of a rocky escarpment. TheSun setting golden red on the horizon cast shadows allaround. Night descended and the Moon rose resplendent

into the sky. I gazed upwards and was touched by the silvenarrows of light that entered my eyes and touched my skin, bringing about enchantment and dream. In one dream Isoundlessly took flight and experienced the night as an owl.In another, scales undulating across forest floor I

experienced the world of the serpent. Each of theseexperiences was profound in itself. Here my only Intentionis to set the stage. When returning to my own form [ withinthat world ] I began to dream, yet again the dream of beinghuman. It took Intent to leave this world and enter another, effort occurs when the energy of that world is equal to theoutcome of detaining you. The challenge to the Gazer orDreamer is not to succumb. The above description fulfils the

criteria of entering a second dream whilst dreaming, that is,the Spirit Animal is already a dream, of sorts and withinthat dream he dreamed of owl and serpent.

The world of Sorcerers is a dream, a myth, Yet it is as realas the everyday world. In order to perceive and function inthe Sorcerers world we have to remove the mask that hasbeen strapped to our faces since the day we were born andreplace it with another. That mask we have to makeourselves by Dreaming our Other Self.

    Closure :

The entire practice is ended by sweeping the Gaze to the left, opening the eyes. Then to the right, turning the palms.Again to the left, assembling the Attention. Again to the

right, entering the moment. Finally looking directly ahead, pausing for a moment prior to rising and continuing withthe rest of the evening.

In conversation with La Gorda, Castaneda discovers that afemale Sorcerer can directly access The Crack Between TheWorlds because she has a womb, the primary function ofwhich is Dreaming. During the two days prior tomenstruation a woman becomes even more sensitised and atthis time can access the Crack directly. Male Sorcerers bycontrast have to make the Crack. The Energetic Matrix 3and its supportive hypothesis - The pressure waves createdby the existence of eight Perceptual Worlds creates a Nexusat the point of their meeting, out of this point, as anemergent quality arises the Crack. It seems I am indeedcreating the means of ingress and egress between theworlds. Between the worlds being the only place a Sorcerercan live.

The Second Attention is like an ocean and the Dreaming

Attention is like a river flowing into it.

The Second Attention is the condition of being aware oftotal worlds, total like our world is total,

while the Dreaming Attention is the conditionof being aware of the items of our dreams.

    Setting Up Dreaming

    Accessing the Third Gate

Operating Premise : Along the continuum between beingawake and being asleep there is a critical point at which,if sufficient consciousness is present acceleration into

Dreaming takes place. The alternative is de-accelerationinto normal sleep and dreams.

    Accelerating into, and entering Dreaming.Awake

    Falling asleep and entering dreams.

    Critical Point

The following methodology is designed to maintain ConsciousAttention, up to and inclusive of the critical point oftransference from one mode of consciousness to another.

    Preparations

Month 1 Study the structure of Practice.

Month 2 In the world study a short journey [ there and back ]Go over it again and again, noticing as much detail aspossible. Commit it thoroughly to memory. The more detailyou can recall the better. [ Over the period of a month, it ispossible to evolve a strategy whereby the journey can bedivided into sections for convenience. ]

Month 3 Ensure that the structure of practice is in place.Ensure that the study of the journey is complete. Ensure that

the Gazing practice has been maintained prior to theDreaming practice and that it is continued during thepractice.

    Technique

    1. From the point of leaving the room - house etc. Usingmemory and imagination travel the route of your journey[ If the journey has been set up at night make it so etc. ]

Travel your journey step by step, as if you were walkingit in your body in the world. Upon arriving at yourdestination turn around and return. Entering the house -room you are situated in, integrate the imaginary bodyyou have been travelling with the physical. [ It is mostimportant that this is done as an act of Intent ]

    2. Continuing the above methodology. After some time, andfamiliarity with the journey arises, place at a specific pointa visual marker or symbol. At another location place aspecific sound or word that you hear. At another locationtouch something and feel it. Do the same with a specificsmell and a specific taste at other locations.

Not Doing is Performed by the body

Set up by Gazing and is a method of storing Personal Power.

Sorcery is the Cunning of the 1st Attentionand serves as the interface.

Gazing is the Cunning of the 2nd Attentionand facilitates Active Dreaming.

Setting Up Dreaming is the Cunning of the Double.

It lures the one to flesh the other.Which one does what is open to conjecture,

for it is a matter of theDreamer and the Dreamed.

    Comment concerning Setting Up Dreaming

In the early hours of this morning atapproximately 2 3 am I had an

experience that approximates whatoccurred over 25 years ago when Ifirst Set Up Dreaming. The memoryof this mornings experience is clearand yet being the nature of dream itcontains irrationalities that are

appropriate to this context. What follows is as precise adescription as I can manage at this time. I awoke to see

light coming through the curtains and after some strugglemanaged to rise and walk towards the window movementwas disjointed, yet after an indefinite time I managed toarrive at the window. I had the distinct impression that Iwas Dreaming and as such sought to leave the room. Again, after an effort I succeeded in entering the corridor with theintention of travelling to the next room. The corridor itselfwas constantly changing, yet I managed to stabilise it whilst

pulling myself along one wall. Eventually I entered the otherroom and took hold of my colleagues hand, and upon doingso sought to produce sound. The sound that came out wasguttural and took a lot of effort. Once produced it propelledme back to my sleeping position, whereupon I awoke withan elated feeling of having taken the first step in Setting UpDreaming. I rose entered the bathroom, returned and thenheard my colleague do much the same. It would have beeninteresting to have had a conversation, yet I chose not todisturb her further. After some time spent re-orientatingmyself I entered sleep and awoke this morning with the

    26/36

distinct impression that the experience had occurred twice.I am uncertain of the truth of this as it is simply animpression. I consider that sufficient Dreaming Attentionwas present to initiate this first step and can only concludethat the Personal Power I am accumulating is now

sufficient to initiating this process. I have been activelyengaged in this practice for : 3 months of preparation and 4months plus of actual exercise. The important thing to noteis that I continue to maintain the attitude of Indifference, even in the light of such an experience and as such Icontinue.

I am going to speak to you about Not Doing, in spite of thefact that there is no way to talk about it, because it is thebody that does it. Take that rock for instance. To look at it isDoing, but to See it is Not Doing. The world is the worldbecause you know the Doing involved in making it so. Ifyou didnt know its Doing, the world would be different. You

are making this into a pebble because you know the Doinginvolved in it. Now, in order to Stop The World you muststop Doing. As I have said before, a Warrior doesnt need tobelieve, because as long as he keeps on acting withoutbelieving he is Not Doing. Dreaming is the Not Doing ofdreams. From now on and for a period of eight days lie toyourself. Instead of telling yourself the truth that you areas you are, tell yourself the opposite, knowing that you arelying and absolutely beyond hope. This may hook you toanother doing and then you may realise that both doingsare lies, unreal, and that to hinge yourself to either one is awaste of time, because the only thing that is real is thebeing in you that is going to die. To arrive at that being isthe Not Doing of the self. The trick is in what is emphasised. We either make ourselves weak or we make ourselves

strong. The amount of work is the same. Don Juan Matus

    Comments concerning dreams

Two dreams occurred, the firstTuesday night, the second onWednesday night. In both instancesthe dreams were lucid and pertainedto that aspect of dreaming. In thefirst I was contained within a circleof women. All known to me yet theirappearance was very different. Inthe world they are all Neuro

Linguistic Trainers. The very best on offer world wide. Noapparently important words or communication was passedbetween us, only their energetic presence was marked.Contained within their circle was an interesting andchallenging experience. This dream has some significancefor one reason only. Damian was conceived on June 9th 1997.He spent nine months gestating, a form of Magickalhibernation. The question arises : Who was the mother? IHave my thoughts on this and they will remain within the

realm of speculation. What is of importance is that in theinstance of a Mother it presupposes a Father. In thisinstance, in conversation prior to the 9th I statedemphatically to a curious and interested party that indeedthere was no father. For the fact was that the process waspurely female. Here the dream takes on specific value ascan be clearly seen.

The second dream relates in an interesting way. To be brief,I dreamed that I met someone who had just been born. Likemyself fully formed, articulate and aware. On approachingI realised that in truth I was approaching myself, a hand

was extended and we melded. The interesting element herewas that the form [ the I ] was female. What is of interest isthat some months ago as Damian I wrote Songs in Solitude. The very first tale written was Pax Nobilis A NoblePeace the central character of the story is Damiana also

happens to be the female form of Damian. Her tale like allgood fiction is part biography and part phantasy.

Again I repeat these dreams are considered to be an aspectof dreaming I spell with a small d. The distinction isimportant. I record them solely to be accurate in recordingphenomena that arises which may at the time seeminsignificant, yet at a future date turns out to be of

importance.A night of interesting lucid dream activity. In one sectionwhilst travelling with a group of people I found myselfexploring an interesting world. I encountered something thatwas not animal or vegetable but a combination of both. Itbegan as a phosphorescent green patch on the bark of a tree, which when examined detached a section of itself and tookon the form of a small elephant. Whilst observing this twocreatures wandered out of the surrounding jungle, fox like inappearance. They approached and transformed into twohumanoid forms, what was originally beige fur transformedinto hair and eye colouring. They were elegant, lithe and hadexquisite features. The male of the two taught me how to fly.Movement without moving was the key.

The night before last found me again in an unusual place.

Something about projecting breath outwards. A pair of armswere wrapped around me which gave emphasis to the lowerdiaphragm. It was an unusual sensation projecting the breathin this way.

    Introduction

During the year long period ofpractice three sets of principlespertaining to Sorcery have beenhighlighted. The first two sets : TheFour Moods of Stalking and TheFour Enemies of a Man or Woman ofKnowledge have been applied andcommented upon in a number of

ways. At this time it is appropriate to pass comment uponthe third set : The Attributes of a Warrior. In outlining therole of a Petty Tyrant and The Attributes of a Warrior Don

Juan tells Carlos a story about his benefactors strategy fordealing with a man who had shot and left for dead DonJuan when he worked as a mill labourer. See The Fire FromWithin Carlos Castaneda Pages 26 46. Recognising thecontext in which the lesson of The Attributes of a Warriorwere communicated to Carlos, I shall now, in the light ofthese words explore the attributes equal to my own currentunderstanding.

    The Attributes of a Warrior

Control In the light of all that

transpires whilst pursuing the pathof Sorcery one remains sober. Thisdemonstrates the Inaccessibilitythat the Sorcerer strives for andresults from having Lost SelfImportance and Self Reflection, having Erased Personal History

and having ultimately become a Formless Warrior byLosing The Human Form.

Discipline Unbending Intent is what ensures thatirrespective of what unfolds one remains constant withinthe practice. This clearly demonstrates that the Warrior isrehearsing Impeccability which derives from making onesdecisions final acts.

Forbearance Otherwise known as Patience. The ability toremain indifferent in the light of all that transpires. This isbrought about by recognising the equality of all things andwith this attitude in place one enters Freedom whilstpursuing the path itself.

Timing The essence of Acting appropriately. Knowingwhen to do so and when not to, for in some instances the bestform of action is to wait for sufficient information inrespect of a specific context.

Will A Warrior waits, knowing what it is they arewaiting for. An emergent property that arises out ofapplying the previous attributes.

The Petty Tyrant The foregoing attributes are internalwhilst the sixth The Petty Tyrant is external and relates to

the world and those within it.

    The Petty Tyrant

    Ruthlessness Fear Control

The first trinity of Principles bears astriking linguistic accuracy. Bearingin mind the general meaning ofRuthlessness which is discarding allthat is not necessary it follows that

Fear consumes a vast amount ofPersonal Power, for it is through themasks of Fear that the apprentice

and Sorcerer alike meet their challenges. When performinga Sorcerers Strategic Inventory one of the very first itemsaddressed is ones perceived Fears, arising, as they do fromwhat is the current description we hold of the world. It takesRuthlessness to even contemplate unearthing our

vulnerabilities, yet alone addressing them face on. Itbecomes necessary to be Ruthless with oneself, the primaryterritory for The Stalker. For in the light of ones Fear orFears one moves on. To do this congruently takes Control, for in the light of whatever takes place, one becomesIndifferent and proceeds. This when in the grip of ones Feartakes both Ruthlessness and Control, for in one sense the twoterms and what they imply are interchangeable.

    Cunning Clarity Discipline

In order to practice Cunning onerequires Clarity which grants usinsight into knowing theappropriateness of a specificbehaviour. And conversely in order

to have Clarity it is necessary topractice sufficient Cunning in orderto circumnavigate the tendencies we

have in our thinking as human beings. As can be seen therelationship between Cunning and Clarity is self evident. Topractice and apply these principles in order to hone theminto tools and skills of true usefulness takes Discipline.

    Patience Power Forbearance

Patience and Forbearance again areinterchangeable terms and indealing with the onslaughts of Powerare invaluable for they serve totemper the Warrior and as a resultenable them to acquire true Sobriety.

And yet to practice and apply thesePrinciples takes Power.

    34/36

    Sweetness Old Age Timing

It is primarily the Sweetness ofblending and appearing ordinarythat effectively allows for Old Age in

its sense of the accumulation ofyears. Timing in this instance hastwo specific relational points. Firstthere is the timing of acts, oftenspoken of and then there is the

deliberate acts the Warrior undertakes throughout theirlives. The Sorcerers Strategic Inventory permits the life of aWarrior to be one of deliberation, which allows for the acts

of youth being timed appropriately whilst those ofadvancing years are likewise timed appropriately. To theoutside eye this permits the Sweetness of concealing onestrue power to take place.

    Will

An emergent property. Within thetext it is stated that a Warrior waitsand knows what it is they arewaiting for. The practice of Patiencefacilitates the emergence of the Will. The Will which is described as beinga specific bundle of fibres that islocated at the point of the navel, a

gap situated either above or below this point out of which

the Will emerges in order to grab things. A physical senseof touching what is out there with something that is inhere. It is the Will that permits the Warrior to performextraordinary acts and to live a life where extraordinarythings take place. The Will finally emerges when theprevious attributes of Control, Discipline, Forbearance andtiming have been applied consistently and congruently, onlythen is the Warrior prepared for the emergence of the

    inexplicable The Will.

    35/36

    The Petty Tyrant

All the preceding Principles ofSorcery are internal, whether theybe The Four Moods of Stalking

which are strategies for dealingwith the world and with thosewithin it. The Four Enemies which, whilst arising from without take onthe characteristics, the responses of

the Warrior him or herself, for even Old Age is an attitude. Finally the previous attributes are attitudes and skillsdeveloped in order to remain congruently aligned to the

path of Sorcery. The Petty Tyrant exists externally and isinvariably a person or situation that has, to one degree oranother power over the Warrior. It is how the Warrior, specifically the Stalker examines and responds to The PettyTyrant that determines whether one is successful or not inover throwing their influence, thereby demonstrating theflexibility and the quality of being inaccessible. It is alsotrue that one can be or become ones own worst enemy or

Petty Tyrant and in respect of this the other Principles ofSorcery stand one in good stead.

    Self Importance

Though not listed as either a Mood,an Enemy or and attribute, I feelthat this Principle, as described by

Don Juan, specifically in connectionto The Old Seers is the Principlewithout equal that the Warriorattends to throughout their pursuitof Sorcery. It is my contention that

properly speaking Self Importance is an Enemy of a Man orWoman of Knowledge and rightly belongs in this category. It operates at a higher logical level and as such all Four

Enemies are dependant upon its presence in order to succeedin overthrowing the Warrior. Conversely and appropriatelyit is only in the light of the Loss of Self Importance and its

  • 7/30/2019 A Toltec Witness Section 3

    36/36

attendant lack of Self Reflection that the Warrior succeedsin not succumbing to the Enemies themselves.

Self Importance is how we tend to value one thing aboveanother, not because of the things intrinsic value but how

we value ourselves in the process of valuing. In this respectthe Sorcerers predilection of Stalking is worth consideringclosely, specifically the component of equality. Not theequality of a social or political persuasion but rather thatnothing counts, as a result of all things being equal. In thisway the Sorcerer is freed to pursue Freedom unencumberedby so called truth and meaning. The component thatemphasises this clearly is the concept of Controlled Folly.

All actions being equal, all is folly, our Self Importanceseduces us into accepting the value of something which inprinciple is valueless. A Sorcerer likewise acts with folly, there is no other choice. The distinction is one of degree. ASorcerer knows this and as such is free to act knowing theunimportance of the act, yet rejoicing in its performance. All this is geared to Seeing in respect of one simple thing, whilst we Look at things we code them for value criteria.

When we See, it is into the heart of a thing that ourAttention travels.
