Congratulations, Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters!

As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, I can't help but look back and be amazed on how

far we have traveled in our journey to Toastmasters excellence. Our tenacity, team

work, and strong support system brought us to where we are now as a club significantly

impacting not only the development, but also the lives of our members. This is truly an

epitome of our division's battle cry for member-centricity this Toastmasters Year.

This past decade, we have positioned our club as one of Division K's most sustainable

club. We've proven to be a hallmark of communication and leadership, having been able

to produce 6 Division champions, 2 District champions, where 1 went on to represent

District 75 in the World Championship of Public Speaking, and 6 members held positions

in the district.

I take great pride to be a member of the "Friendliest Toastmasters Club", and we

continue on with our journey, I wish us all more significant successes in the future. May

It is an honor to be named the 11th President of Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club – a

diverse mix of smart, brilliant and passionate individuals who come from different

industries and communities within and outside Bonifacio Global City. The club is a

community of learners focused towards achieving the goal of becoming better

speakers and leaders.

It has been a roller coaster ride for the past 10 years. The club went through

challenges that strengthened the leadership skills of its leaders as proven by the

continuous growth of the club after the rebirth of a new and revitalized Fort Bonifacio

Toastmasters Club.

Today, the club is stronger than ever as it proves to be one of the best performing

clubs in the District with a solid membership of 33 and attaining 8 club goals as early as

October.

As we mark the 10th Anniversary of Fort Boni TMC, we stand at the foot of a mountain

MESSAGE from the Charter President

Congratulations to Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club (FBTMC) for 10

years of remarkable growth — growth in membership, vision,

effectiveness, and credibility.

Ten years is a milestone. Number 10 signifies completeness. It is an

occasion to celebrate, an opportunity to momentarily look back but a

golden ticket to chart the path forward.

In 2006 the FBTMC was created in response to requests from a number

of Army Officer’s Ladies to learn, practice and hone their

communication and leadership skills in support to their husbands.

The aim of Toastmasters Club is to create an organization that would deliver a supportive and positive

learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership

skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth. Hence, Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters

Club was born in November 20, 2006.

I said born because it was the pilot project of the Philippine Army Officers Ladies Club based in Fort

Bonifacio Army Headquarters. A lot of mothers took care of the club from its infancy. But soon the hot

mommas were transferred to different locations depending on their husband’s assignments so the

club suffered a setback. But like a true soldier, it survived the battle and emerged victorious.

Today FBTMC prides to be the first Toastmasters Club in Bonifacio Global City. The hot mommas

might be gone, but the Club is much stronger under the leadership of the officers and members that

comprised a diversified group of young professionals. Truly a memorable passing of the baton to the

next generation, a legacy.

FBTMC has given rise to six Division K champions within the last 10 years and still counting. During

the first year of its conception alone, we brought home the top prize when we won the International

Speech Contest and was represented to the International Speech Contest in Phoenix, Arizona.

FBTMC, keep on rocking!

Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club

Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club was raised by warmhearted mothers in its infancy, was

forced to stand on its own feet, was rescued and fostered, and has stood strong carrying with

it the legacy from every generation of leaders. This is the story of our olden days.

Conception till birth

In 2006, a group of women sought an avenue for

growth as they stood behind their beloved

soldiers. Valor manifested in these women as

they resolved to create a place where they could

commune and practice and hone their

communication and leadership skills. This led to

that one fateful day on November 20, 2006 when

Philippine Army Officers’ Ladies came together to

form Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club. At the time,

the club was based at Fort Bonifacio Philippine Army

Headquarters.

The club’s early years under the care of its motherly keepers had been fruitful, producing

Competent Communicators and Advanced Communicators. In 2007, Lourdes “Doddie” Felix

carried the name of the young Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club to the World Championship of

Public Speaking in Phoenix, Arizona after she triumphed over contestants on the District level.

Orphanhood

Many Army Officers’ Ladies delighted in the benefits of being a Toastmaster until each one had

to move to different locations due to their husband’s

reassignments. Eventually, the club lost its original mothers and

was in dire straits.

Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club, still in its toddlerhood, was in

need of a new guardian who was willing to undertake the

challenges.

While the club membership had been opened to all, it was still a

major challenge to get the commitment of the members. On top of

that, the club was lacking funds and in need of a new venue. It was

slowly dying out and longing for a family.

To the club’s rescue

As Mikhail “Miks” Cabatic, ACG, ALB, recounts when

he first found the club, “It was really in bad shape—

really bad—not living but merely existing.” Miks was

the 7th Club President and a major roleplayer in the

revival of the club.

The club is lucky to have found such an impassioned worker as Miks,

who was eager to keep the club and continue its mission, from which he

had also benefitted. As fate would have it, he also found another passionate

individual who was then looking for a club that needed aid from a coach.

Corazon “Tita Cora” Oliva, DTM readily accepted the challenge of being the

new Club Coach of Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club.

Miks and Tita Cora were the only ones who celebrated the club’s 5th Anniversary, but the

occasion also marked the start of revitalization for the club. These two people harbored a

spirit of burning passion and determination to keep the club alive.

The revitalization program

With their knowledge and expertise, they carefully studied the situation of the club. First, they

recognized that every club is unique and chose to preserve the identity of the club. Fort

Bonifacio Toastmasters Club was the only Toastmasters club in Bonifacio Global City, one of

the coolest places in Metro Manila. Then, they saw a kaleidoscope of young professionals and

hang-out generation. Transferring to South of Market Residences, a venue closer to the heart

of the city, they were able to establish a dynamic meeting environment where different kinds

of people could converge without anyone feeling left out or intimidated; hence the title

“friendliest Toastmasters Club.”

The strongest clubs are, for Miks, “self-reliant and self-sustaining,” and in

order to sustain the club, our leaders treated it as a “customers

game,” wherein the focus is on the members and not the

membership. They focused on building and strengthening the

capacity of the club by training its members into leaders. Members

were highly prioritized for meeting roles, instead of taking

guests from other clubs. This helped the members discover

their hidden talents and develop their own unique style.

The results of these efforts have become apparent in the long list of leaders, awards and

contest champions that the club has produced. Miks himself became a Division K Evaluation

Champion. Besides him, the club brought forth a District 75 Evaluation Champion, Vida

Verzosa; a Division K Humorous Speech Champion, Jeff Quinto; and Division K Table Topics

Champions, Merlon Ascabano and Mimi Arellano.

Visions and legacy

From being an

endangered club,

Fort Bonifacio

Toastmasters Club

was rebuilt with a

stronger

foundation. The

persistence of our

past leaders gave

us the momentum

to aim for greater

milestones.

People have come and gone, but they all go as leaders. The visions of the past have turned

into a legacy that we will uphold for all time.

Here's a little trivia about our humble beginnings. Did you know that Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club started as an exclusive club for the wives of military officers? Eventually, it opened up to people outside of the army. Look how diverse our membership is now!

We know how "multi-awarded" sounds prestigious when attached to

a name.

So, how about this: Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club is a four-time

President's Distinguished Club awardee.

We were also a Select Distinguished Club awardee, three-time

Distinguished Club awardee, five-time Beat the Clock awardee,

seven-time Smedley awardee, and three-time Talk-Up Toastmasters

awardee.

Would this be enough to call us a multi-awarded Toastmasters club?

The President's Distinguished Club is the highest award granted by

Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club meetings are held at the Theater

Room of South of Market (SOMA) Residences, a private residential

tower in BGC that's conveniently near SM Aura and BGC High Street.

But did you know that the club used to hold its meetings at the Fort

Bonifacio Philippine Army Headquarters?

The Philippine Army Officers' Ladies Club Office was the first meeting

venue of Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters, which was then an exclusive

club to army officers' wives.

Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club has gone through ups and downs,

but definitely, the club always goes up at the end of the day.

It would be worth recognizing the leaders who led the club to where

it is now. So, here is a list of the Club Presidents through the years.

We especially owe the Charter President, Lourdes "Doddie" Felix,

ACB, CL, together with the pioneer officers and members, who set

the platform that is Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club for us to

practice our communication and leadership skills.

Did you know that our Charter President was also the first to bring

home the bacon for Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club?

During the District 75 Toastmasters International Convention held in

Cebu City in May 2007, Lourdes "Doddie" Felix, ACB, CL, came out on

top of the District International Prepared Speech Contest, which is

equivalent to a national championship. She then represented the

Philippines to the World Public Speaking Contest held in Phoenix,

Arizona, USA.

In her speech entitled, "One Fleeting Chance" she demonstrated her

flair for words when she spoke of how we must "clear the aisles of

emotional baggage, straighten our priority seats and fasten our

relationship seatbelts."

Seven years after the club's first District-level victory, Vida Verzosa

represented Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club in the District 75

Evaluation Contest during the 33rd District 75 Convention held in

Clark, Pampanga last May 2014.

With her hallmark "acronym style" of evaluating a speech, she stood

out and brought home the championship trophy.

Did you know that Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club has given rise to

six Division K champions in the past years?

These champs prevailed in the Club, Area and Division levels and

were able to represent our club in the District level, which is

equivalent to a national championship.

Indeed, we are not only a very friendly club but also an outstanding

one at that.

Did you know that the current Division K Director is from Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club?

As the Division Director, Mimi Arellano, ACS, ALB, supports the Area Directors and leads the Division toward its goals. Before her, we had another member who served as a high-ranking District officer. Corazon Oliva, DTM, "Tita Cora" as we call her, was appointed District 75 Public Relations Officer in TY 2012-2013. During that time, she was a dual member of Fort Bonifacio and Presidents Toastmasters Clubs. In total, Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club has had six members who held a position in the District Executive Committee!

Did you know that the friendliest Toastmasters club that exists in

BGC today almost got dissolved in the past?

10 is not the only significant number to Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters

Club. 5 is also a special number as it signifies the point of greatest

despair for the club.

5 years ago, the club was opened to the public not because of the

desire to diversify but because the club was fading fast. Fort

Bonifacio Toastmasters Club, with all the original members gone, was

dying to the point that it only had two celebrants in its 5th

anniversary.

These two people - Mikhail Cabatic, the 7th president of the club,

and Corazon Oliva, then the Club Coach - worked together to

develop a program that aimed to preserve the unique identity of the

club and focused on member development and a stronger support

system. This revitalization program would later on bring back life to

the club.

On November 20, 2006, Philippine Army officers' wives established

Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club. From being a club exclusive to

officers' wives, the club eventually opened its doors to the general

public.

The day that Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club was founded 10 years

ago marked the advent of stronger leaders and better public

speakers in the home of passionate minds, BGC.

Through the years, the club has gone through peaks and valleys and

clouds of storm. Now, 10 years later, Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters

Club stands firm and well-fortified, strengthened by all the challenges

and determined to continue the club mission.

A toast to 10 years and beyond of shaping leaders and public

speakers!

The Club President Award

Awarded to Club Presidents who have led the club towards achieving greater heights.

The club under his/her term must be recognized as a Distinguished Club.

The Club Service Award

Awarded to club members who have held club/district level positions for at least six

months. The member must have clear contributions to the club’s over-all performance.

This is granted to members who continuously support the club up to present in various

capacities.

The Club Phoenix Award

Awarded to the major role players during the recovery period of the club. The awardees

are considered as the “rescuers” of Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters. Through the

revitalization program that they implemented, the club was given another chance to

survive and thrive as one of the top performing clubs of District 75.

Like the mythical creature Phoenix that rises from its ashes, the Fort Bonifacio

Toastmasters Club experienced rebirth after the dying of its life as a club.

Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club's President works at a company that provides Green Lighting Solutions. In his one and a half years in the club, Jovito "Vits" Magoncia, CC, ALB, held three different Executive Committee positions - Secretary, VP Public Relations and VP Education. He is also currently the PR Officer of Division K. Our Club President believes that to improve one's skills as a speaker and a leader, one has to remain consistently active in various activities offered by the club.

Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club's Vice President for Education is a graduate school student taking up Masters in Language - English Studies at University of the Philippines -Diliman. Kate Allison Gapul, TM, Kates as we call her, is also a member of the Philippine Society for Training and Development. Kates also loves running and does hosting stints.

JOSE MARIA ANTONIO “JAG” GARDE, CC VP Membership

Jose Maria Antonio Garde, CC, Jag for short, joined Toastmasters to improve his thought organization and public speaking. Eventually, he also honed his leadership by leading the club as an officer! Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club's Vice President for Membership is now a freelance trainer and host. He is active in a Catholic charismatic community called Light of Jesus, founded by Bo Sanchez. Jag also loves sports such as mountain climbing, mountain biking, swimming, and playing badminton.

RIZELLE “REI” LEAÑO, TM VP Public Relations

Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club's Vice President for Public Relations is an extroverted introvert who loves to find refuge in writing and cafés. She is a twenty-something still in pursuit of her life's passions. An alumna of UP Los Baños, Rei Leaño, TM, is a freelance writer and a rookie media producer outside of her corporate job. She also enjoys eating, backpacking, a little gaming, and watching suspense.

Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club's Secretary is a "call boy" by night and proud of it. His job? He is a boy taking customer service calls at a BPO firm in Eastwood! By day, James Isaac Exequiel, CC, is a bookworm. On weekends, he dedicates time for friends and extracurricular activities. He represented Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club at the Area 76 Evaluation Contest last September 2016.

ANTHONY “TONY” TUCAY, TM Treasurer

Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club's Treasurer is a Senior Unit Head at AXA Philippines and a Certified Associate Financial Planner. Tony Tucay, TM, is also a certified scuba diver and a music enthusiast. But among his many titles, he values his role as a husband to a beautiful wife and a doting father to an adorable daughter the most. He represented Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club at the Division K Humorous Speech Contest last September and walked off as the 1st Runner-up.

ANGELO “GELOW” REOTUTAR, TM Sergeant-at-Arms

Angelo Reotutar, Gelow as his fellows call him, is currently Fort Bonifacio Toastmasters Club's Sergeant at Arms. A graduate of BA in English, minor in Mass Communication, our Sergeant at Arms aspires to be a motivational speaker and a theater actor. He also hopes to be a triathlete someday. So far, he has joined two 42K marathons. During downtime, Gelow loves to read a good book and spend some quality time with family and friends.
