A timeline is similar to those number lines that you have worked on in Math class.

We used to used the terms “B.C. meaning “Before Christ” and A.D. meaning “Anno Domini” which is Latin for “year of our Lord”.

This way to Pre-History This way to 2011

In recent times, in an attempt to be more fair to non-Western cultures, we have changed these terms to “C.E. meaning “Common Era and B.C.E. meaning “Before Common Era”

This way to Pre-History This way to 2011

To the right of “0” starting with 1 C.E. the years go up, The farther to the right you go the higher the years get (And the more closer they are to our own time.)

This way to 2011

To the left of “0” the years are treated like negative numbers. The further to the left you go, the higher the number of years B.C.E. (Before Common Era) and the further back in time you travel !

This way to Pre-History

When we use the term “Pre-History” or Pre-Historic” we are referring to the time before mankind had any written language to record any important events or even day-to-day interactions with each other.

A time line is like a ruler.

But instead of measuring distance in space,

A time line measures distance in time.
