1400 1420 1440 1460 1480Ngāti Tumatakokiri tupunaarrive with Kurahaupō waka inthe Bay of Plenty. Ngāti Tumatakokiri spread to Taupo then Whanganui then Marlborough Sounds.
Through their Kurahaupō waka whakapapa, Ngāti Tumatakokiri were related to other Te Tau Ihu tribes ie NgātiKuia, Ngati Apa, Rangitāne and Nga Tara who controlled the strategic areas of Te Whanganui-a-Tara and Kapiti.

In the 15th Century the climate cooled and there was a shortage of food, no more snapper off the South Islandand only small snapper in the north. Kumara and bracken became the main foods and people burnt off bush sobracken would grow. Tribal land and seas were the supermarket of the time, without them one’s people died orfought neighbours for survival. Many tribes displaced and pushed south.
