The threshold is an interface; the point at which two systems meet. This portal can manifest in in-numerable ways; a window, a door, a wormhole between universes, sometimes even an artwork. In the instance of this exhibition those two systems are; what might be thought of as objective reality and each artist’s own subjectivity. Reality rubs up against the creator’s imagined realm and the nex-us point that it produces is an artwork. In this manner, all artworks are thresholds and all artworks are liminal. The artwork and its formative processes are gateways to exploring different ways of be-ing, other possible worlds, alternative forms of knowledge and nonstandard ways of knowing. The diverse works and non-works presented propose a mapping of intensities; rigorous practices that weave these explorations into matter.

A Threshold brings together an array of new and old works by A.P.T artist-members alongside inci-dental studio artefacts. As well as showcasing the wealth of talent that brews beneath the studios’ brick and mortar skin, the exhibition provides a glimpse behind the building’s 42 studio doors, which conceal the idiosyncrasies of each practice.

By placing CD collections, seaside windmills and customised caps on display, A Threshold consid-ers objects that are integral to each practice which often remain out of sight, invisible behind closed doors.

A.P.T GALLERY & STUDIOS

Traditionally Open Studios has taken place every year with our artist-members opening their doors and revealing their creative milieux and latest works. This year, for the first time, we have invited 22 artists to participate in APT LIVE and create new work that responds to the site, the unique architectural environment of the studios, and the rich and intriguing ecology of Deptford Creek. These works will add to the visitors’ experience of Open Studios by activating the stair-wells, corridors, and our exterior yard with challenging, humorous and distinctive work. Films, subtle sounds, objects and performers will be found as visitors meander through the building. Chris Marshall has curated APT LIVE and explains his motivation: “Curating APT LIVE initially involved a tentative search for artists that I thought would be willing to take part in this new initiative and support A.P.T. This speculative approach was precipitated by the enthusias-tic responses from the artists creating a momentum that has driven the venture forward resulting in a substantial programme of live events. Each artist has had the freedom to de-velop their own ideas and responses formulated from visits to A.P.T and subsequent con-versations and dialogue. Independently they have produced responses and there seems to have been a natural process and evolution resulting in ideas that have a common focus on the environment of A.P.T. Much of the work is experimental with artists challenging themselves and taking risks, which as far as I am concerned is what the creative process is all about. What happens will be edgy, especially for me, but I have complete faith in the contributions of each artist.”
