Advent Greeting Rev. Dr. Tim Hart-AndersenOne: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you.
Call to Worship (from Isaiah 64)One: O that you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at your presence. All: You meet those who gladly do right, those who remember you in your ways. VENI EMMANUELLM with refrain
These titles of the coming Christ appeared in daily Vesper antiphons sung during the week before Christmas;their roots date at least to the reign of Charlemagne. Both text and tune are the fruit of 19th-century efforts toreclaim Christian treasures from pre-Reformation sources.
5 O come, thou Key of David, come, and open wide our heavenly home; make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
6 O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here; disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and deathÕs dark shadows put to ßight. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
7 O come, Desire of nations, bind all peoples in one heart and mind; bid envy, strife, and discord cease; Þll the whole world with heavenÕs peace. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
One stanza of this paraphrase of the great O Antiphons may be sung on each of the last days of Advent as follows:
Dec. 20: O Key of David (5)Dec. 21: O Dayspring (6)Dec. 22: O Desire of Nations (7)
Dec. 23: O Emmanuel (1)Dec. 17: O Wisdom (2)Dec. 18: O Lord of might (3)Dec. 19: O Root of Jesse (4)

Creator of the stars of night, Your people’s everlasting light O Christ, redeemer of us all, We pray you, hear us when we call.
Advent Prayer (Unison) Rev. David Tsai Shinn
Merciful God, you sent messengers, angels and prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for a world yearning for salvation. Show us grace and humility to listen to their warnings, even now, and to turn away from our long-held sins. Make space in our hearts for joy as we work for justice and wait for Jesus, our redeemer and friend. We pray to enter this Advent season with the boldness of a God who comes to us as a vulnerable baby, and as one who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forevermore. Amen.

Prayer for Illumination Susan Sheridan Tucker
Reading from Holy ScriptureMark 13:24-33One: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Alanna Simone TylerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

JESUS CHRIST: ADVENT
106Prepare the Way, O Zion
Guitar chords do not correspond with keyboard harmony.
This engaging Advent text based on Isaiah 40:3–5 and Psalm 24:7–10 has been in use in the Church of Swedenfor almost two hundred years. It is set to a version of an even older Swedish tune, which in turn seems to bederived from a German folktune that spread to Scandinavia.
