A Technology & Design STEM Resource
The following STEM funded project was developed by Sean O’Connor. This is an excellent example of a design opportunity that is very topical and will no doubt appeal to many young Technology students.
The project has been selected for the following reasons:-
• the design element is achievable by most pupils;• the project is topical and appropriate for the development of research / thinking skills;• it is ideal for modelling in card, paper, etc;• this project could be easily simplified for the low achiever and yet will stretch and challenge the more capable students;• an excellent example for modelling in 2D or 3D CAD / Solid Works;• it could be manufactured in a relatively short period of time;• it promotes further development using electronic systems; • I believe many students will receive great pleasure in taking this exciting project home.
I have no doubt that many students will develop their Technology and Design skills in engaging in this very worthwhile task. May I take this opportunity to thank Sean for this excellent resource. Raymond Moffatt WELB.

Circuit TheoryHow a transistor works!
Circuit TheoryTurning sound to light using a transistor
The LED’s illuminates when the circuit detects a high amplitude waveform. It can be connected to a Walkman, ipod, Phone, mini radio with earphones. This waveform is amplified by a transistor which acts as an electronic switch turning on and off the LED’s to the sound/loudness of the music

Part A: MUSIC TO Light. The LED’s illuminates when the circuit detects a high amplitude waveform. It can be connected to a Walkman, ipod, Phone, mini radio with earphones. This waveform is amplified by a transistor which acts as an electronic switch turning on and off the LED’s to the sound/loudness of the music.
Part B: SOUND. The second channel can be connected to produce sound through a small speaker.

How it works! Using the right and left outputs from an earphone jack two circuits can be generated.
ResearchAs a designer research is key to developing a successful outcome, sourcing inspiration in the form of colours, features, form, materials, e.t.c from existing and similar products.
