Objective: To organise a family carnival with the evergreen Malgudi days theme “A Taste of Malgudi” is an unforgettable 'once­in­a­lifetime' carnival with a theme based on Malgudi Days inviting all children and their parents to the event.One can get a taste of R.K.Narayan's bestseller 'Malgudi Days' right here at T.I.M.E.Kids !This event seeks to offer a fun­filled experience for both kids and adults with numerous games and activities. Perfect for a Family outing!!

Malgudi Memories : Past Forward... !!

Some of us did not watch ' Malgudi Days' .....we lived them !!!Would you time­ travel, if you could?Like most others, we would want to carry ourselves back in time to this peculiarly­real town of Malgudi so we can relive the days again............

Preparation :

Select outdoor space for holding the carnival. If the outdoors are not spacious enough, then look for colony park, municipal park or playground closeby. 

Send an invitation card (cut out square cards and make the children do some art work on it)at least 10 days in advance. 

This card to give the day / date / timings of the carnival. It is preferred that it is held on a Saturday or a Sunday. Dress code : Ethnic 

For the D­ Day Suggested activities & Games:1. Tattoo Parlour: Arrange for a Tattoo artist in a stall . Only washable, non­toxic, poster colours to be used to make temporary tattoos.

2. Kite Festival Arrange for Kites / Manja / Chakri... let people have a field day flying kites on the terrace/playground

3. Puppet show (outsourced) / Magic Show (outsourced)

4. Clicking selfies at the quaint  Red Mailbox/ Post­office (painted on thermocol sheets)

5. Varied food stalls offering traditional savouries (Idli /Dosa/Vada / Filter Coffee)

For the food stalls, you may rope in some willing parents and ask them to put up stalls selling dosa, Idli­chutney, rice dishes, nimboo paani, lemon soda etc on 'no profit ­ no loss' basis.

6. Gilli DandaNumber of playersUnlike modern games, any number of players or teams can play this game. That’s precisely thedifference between the western and Indian games. However, it is preferred that you have only two teams to avoid unnecessary fights.Steps Followed To Play 

 Divide the players into two teams. Let any of the two players be the captains.  Toss a coin. The team which wins the toss can select batting or fielding but not both.  Make the circle with a hole in the centre where the batsman will bat. The player of the batting team will use danda to bat, while fielding team is spread in the ground to field. 

There is no bowler in this game. The batsman hits the gilli at one tapered ends with his danda, and quickly strikes it.  If the batsman strikes the gilli which no fielder is able to catch, then the danda is used to measure the 

distance from the circle to the point where gilli fell. Each danda’s length adds one point to the batting team.

 If the batsman is unable to strike the gilli in 3 continuous chances, the batsman is out.  If the batsman strikes the gilli and the fielder catches it before it touches the ground, then the batsman is 

out.  The next player of his team comes to bat.  Repeat the above steps unless all the players of the batting team are out. Calculate their total points.  Now the fielding team will bat and the batting team will start fielding. The above steps for the batting 

team will remain the same. The team with maximum score will win the match

7. Matki Phod: Arrange for catapults (gulels) and small pebbles. 

Pots could be arrange at a distance. Each player get 3 turns to aim and hit the target (pot) and break it.* Alternatively, Matka phod could be played by keeping a pot at a designated spot.The playersto be blindfolded and given a stick to break the pot in 3 chances.

8. Tyre­racing challenge: ­ It is an interesting running race between boys / parents with cycle              tyre. All you need is an abandoned cycle tyre or rim and one stick. One 

         has to guide the tire or the rim with the stick to drive it. There are regular competitions                        among kids and you will be amazed to see the amount of fun and excitement this sport can 

         give to you. Playing does need skill­­You have to just run the tyre with stick or hand                           whichever comfortable.

9.  Tyre Swings: Old tyres could be tied to the tree branches with strong ropes ..providing excellent rustic swings! Kids could sit on the tyres holding onto the rope or put their bodies through the circle with feet resting on ground...take few steps behind...push the swing ahead and lift feet up ..for an enjoyable ride!

10. Spinning top/ Lattu/ Bhowra                       Requirenment for Top :1)Wooden top ( coloring is an option. It could be made interesting by 

         designing it in any way we need).        2) Pointed nail for getting the centre.        3) String which is useful for spinning the top, it is also used for lifting up the

spinning top.How to play the game : Very simple rules to follow.All the players have to go for the ‘toss’ After counting 1, 2, 3 all the players should wind their tops with their ropes. Then unwind it by releasing it from the rope, throwing it on the ground to rotate and pick it up with the rope as quickly as possible. It depends on managing the shortest rope length which helps you to rotate it and allowing you to catch it back with the rope.Conditions for losing the toss :

If the top fails to rotate on its nail on the ground – it is called ‘Mattai’ , which means you lose the toss. If you fail to catch the top through the rope then you lose the toss. The last person to finish the ‘Goes’ lose as well. The player who loses the toss will keep his top in the circle drawn on the ground. The rest of the players 

will have to attack on the top which is spinning in the centre of the circle. The players who managed to win the toss successfully will try to spin their tops over the top in the circle 

trying to break them OR trying to get it out of the circle.The other way of playing is :A group of players having their own tops will try spin their tops one by one. One player amongst the group will be keeping track of all the players time score. Whoever manages to spin the top for a longer duration will win the match.

11. Goti / Kancha / Marble Games

Rules and Regulations :The rules and regulations of playing this traditional game are as follows: Setting the Aim­ Firstly, the player has to hold the marble firmly in the forefinger of the left hand. Then he has to stretch the finger back like a bow­string by the pressure of the forefinger of the right hand. And finally, the player has to shoot the golli by releasing the finger.While pushing the marble, one has to remember that the left thumb should firmly touch the ground. The First Player­ Two lines are drawn on the ground to decide the player who gets the first turn. One line is drawn about half a foot and the other three feet away from the hole. According to rule, the players are required to stand at the second line and throw their marbles into the hole. The person whose marble closest to the hole gets to

play first. Techniques of Playing the Golli Gundu 

While playing the game, the aim of the player is to throw the golli into the hole.  Each player needs to contribute two gollies. The first player has to throw them together aiming at the 

hole using one hand. In those two gollies, one may fall in the hole and other outside the hole or both outside the hole. 

Then the co players have to choose a golli, and then the first player is asked to hit the selected golli with another golli that belongs to him. 

If the player manages to hit the target, he wins all the gollies in the hole. If not, he gets the one with which he hit. 

The next player takes his turn with the remaining gollies.  If all the players’ marble does not go into the hole at the first try then the second try starts.  In the second try, the players are required to strike out of the way the goli thrown by the other boys.  The player who ends with the largest number of marbles is the winner. 

12. Gully CricketYou can organize gully cricket at the venue. Players can use either a small cricketbat or washing bat and soft rubber balls to play the game. 

13. Matka Race for women :            Arrange for matkas on the starting line. All matkas to have equal levels of water. On the  

                          blow of the whistle, women to pick up the pot of water on their shoulders and race to the                           finish line.
