AAE Briefing A s the Head of the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, I have been privi- leged to meet many of our alumni who work in the aerospace industry. Their commitment and dedica- tion to the profession is greatly admired and respected. Their involvement with classroom presentations and discussion of collaborative research efforts with our faculty adds strength to our curriculum and provides valuable insight to our students. We’ve taken the relationship one step further by convening an Industrial Advisory Council for the School. It is our hope that with the launching of the IAC, we will begin the impor- tant process of developing a strategic plan that will carry the school into the next century. Ultimately, the work of the council will benefit our students academically and in turn they will provide added value to the aerospace industry. In regard to our students, the enrollment for the 1995-96 school year was 217 under- graduates and 147 graduate Former astronaut Mark Brown and Professor Andrisani presented experiments to a crowd of more than 150 parents, students, and school children. The audience thought they would hear a sizzle but as Professor Andrisani aptly demonstrated the tiles heat dissipation was rapid. “These experiments help explain the flight of aircraft and spacecraft, said Professor Andrisani. Aeronautics and Astronauticswas established by the UniversityBoard of Trustees. Last Novemberthe School celebrated its 50th

Anniversary with a weekend fullof anniversary activities dedicatedto remembering its 50 year history.More than 250 alumni and friendstraveled to West Lafayette to attendthe festivities.

The weekend consisted of twomemorial lectures which featuredJohn B. Hayhurst, BS ’69, VicePresident of Product Development forBoeing Commercial Airplane Groupand William J. O’Neil, BS ’61,Galileo Project Manager for the JetPropulsion Lab. Additionally, tours ofthe School’s laboratory facilities, atailgate party before the football game, and an anniversary banquet, were held.

“In its 50 year history, the Schoolhas graduated more than 5,500alumni and has well establisheditself as a premier provider of aero-nautical and astronautical engineer-ing education. We are proud of theaccomplishments made by ouralumni and gratefully acknowledgethe effects they have had on theaerospace industry,” stated JohnSullivan, Professor and Head.

students (82 Ph.D. and 65 M.S.)Additionally, I am happy toreport that the School ranks highwith its competitors. A recentU.S. News and World Reportranked the School’s under-graduate program fourth and thedoctorate program is rankedseventh in the country accordingto the National Research Council. With the ever-changing techno-logical advances, our CurriculumCommittee, chaired by ProfessorMarc Williams, continues to lookfor ways to improve our curricu-lum so our students will be aptlyprepared upon graduation.

A recent AccreditationBoard for Engineering andTechnology, Inc. (ABET)review of our School reported,“There is a strong, healthy andcontinuing effort to questionand adjust the balance of engi-neering science and designcontent in courses throughoutthe curriculum . . . the amountand type of required laboratorycourses significantly enhancesthe understanding of aerospaceproduct features throughhands-on learning.”

The School’s success isanchored in the strength ofmany—students, faculty, staff, industry, and ouralumni. By workingclosely together, we willcontinue to graduatestudents who willmake their indeliblemark on our nationand the world.

There’s nowhere to store them until weget this project done,” stated Strickler.

Prior to his current position, Dr.Strickler was Vice President and Gen-eral Manager for TRW Ballistic Mis-siles Division, where he led systemsengineering, design, test and evalua-tion, development, and a sustainmentteam for the U.S. Air Force on the Inter-continental Ballistic Missile programs.

On his reaction to the presenta-tion of the DEA award and title, Dr.Stickler said that he was very humbledby the entire experience.

Congratulations Dr. Strickler!

StricklerHonored as

1996 DEAI owe my career to my Purdue

education. Without it, I wouldn’thave had the opportunities I’ve had—there’s no doubt about that. Purdue isa great experience,” so said the Schoolof Aeronautics and Astronautic’s1996 Distinguished EngineeringAlumnus Dr. Robert L. Strickler.

Dr. Strickler, who earned his BSin Aeronautical Engineering in 1960,MS in Aeronautics and EngineeringScience in 1962, and his PhD inMechanical Engineering in 1968, wasone of ten engineering alumni whowas honored during Gala Week 1996.

The Schools of Engineering firstpresented the DEA Awards in 1964.The title of Distinguished EngineeringAlumnus is bestowed upon men andwomen who have proven to be leadersin their profession, in business, indus-try, education, science, and government. Many have founded corporations, built cities, and traveled in space.

Dr. Strickler is President andGeneral Manager of TRW Environ-mental Safety Systems, Inc. (TESS),which is a wholly owned subsidiary ofTRW, Inc. Located in Vienna, Virginia,TESS serves as the Management andOperating Contractor for the Depart-ment of Energy’s Civilian RadioactiveWaste Management Program.

“I took on my current job abouta year ago. . . . This new challengeof finding a place to put radioactivewaste is really important. Twenty-twopercent of the electricity in the U.S.is produced by nuclear reactors, andthe fuel rods used in those reactorslast only about three or four years.

A 1994 Distinguished Engineering Alumnae, Ms. LanaCouch (BS ’63) is Director of the National AeroSpacePlane (NASP) program and provides program leader-ship at NASA Langley in the hypersonic research andtechnology base program. NASP is a multi-billion dollar, joint NASA/Department of Defense program whichis dedicated to developing the technology for anairbreathing-engine powered airplane with a goalof flying to orbit after the turn of the century.

Our 1995 DEA, James Noblitt (BS ’57) is Vice Presidentand General Manager of the Missiles and Space Divisionfor the Boeing Defense and Space Group. Mr. Noblittmanages the operations of a diverse aerospace concernthat performs vital work for the nation’s space andmissile programs. He is in charge of 4,000 employeeswho are located in Kent, Washington; Huntsville, Ala-bama; and, Houston, Texas. Additionally, he serves asPresident of the Boeing Commercial Space Company.

When Mark Polansky (BS ’78and MS ’78) began astronaut

training in August, he fulfilled a life-long dream. Polansky, who was se-lected this spring to be an astronautcandidate for the Class of 1996, waschosen from a pool of 2400 applicants.

Polansky, who was a NASAresearch pilot, first learned of his goodfortune when he was attending a depart-mental meeting of 50 plus employees.A phone call was put through to himwhile he was in the meeting. The voiceon the other end, Chief of the AstronautOffice Robert D. Cabana, ColonelU.S.M.C., said, “We’re going to haveto fire you from your present job.”Fortunately, Polansky, knew this wasgood news. However, he had to keepit to himself until NASA officiallyreleased it to the media weeks later.

“I had profound relief. I felt likeI had put in a long amount of years toget to this point. I finally got the job.I had put in a tremendous investmentof both physical and emotional time.I was relieved and very, very happy,”stated Polansky.

Polansky will be considered aPilot Astronaut upon completion of

his year long training program. Ac-cording to NASA, pilot astronautscan be both commanders and pilotsof the Space Shuttle. “During flightthe commander has onboard respon-sibility for the vehicle, crew, missionsuccess and safety of the flight. Thepilot assists the commander in con-trolling and operating the vehicle. Inaddition, the pilot may assist in thedeployment and retrieval of satellitesutilizing the remote manipulatorsystem, in extravehicular activities, and in other payload operations.”

The Class of 1996 consists ofmore than 35 trainees. Candidates willattend classes on the Space Shuttle, take field trips to NASA centers, andexperience hydraulic and payloadsimulators. Additionally, pilottraining will consist of flyingthe T38 supersonic jet trainerand STA modified GulfstreamTwo corporate jet.

Reminiscing about his days atPurdue, Polansky stated, “It’ s a greatinstitution. I received a great educa-tion.” The long and sometimes gruel-ing hours of study were in part madeeasier, Polansky said, by the colorful

is the 1996-97 recipient of the GusGrissom Scholarship. Marchand, whose ultimate goal is to become anastronaut, was awarded the $7,500scholarship by the Astronaut Schol-arship Foundation.

“Let’s just say my mom heardme screaming and jumping all overthe room. I was pretty happy. I havealways had scholarships and loansduring my entire stay at Purdue, stated Marchand. Now my senioryear will be the first time I am fullyfunded through scholarships. Iwon’t have to take out any loans.

“I am so very grateful to the Astro-naut Scholarship Foundation and to theSchool. Three professors have contin-ued to inspire me. I am grateful toProfessors Gustafson, Longuski, andHowell. They are my role models andI thank them,” stated an excitedMarchand.

Originally named The MercurySeven Foundation, the Astronaut

Marchand AwardedGus GrissomScholarship

Scholarship Foundation was createdby the Mercury 7 Astronauts in 1984,according to Howard Benedict,Executive Director of the Foundation. The six then-surviving members ofAmerica’s original Mercury Sevenastronauts and Mrs. Betty Grissom, widow of the seventh, together withWilliam Douglas, M.D., the ProjectMercury flight surgeon, and HenriLandwirth, a longtime friend of theastronauts, created the foundation.Founding astronauts include MalcolmScott Carpenter, L. Gordon Cooper, Jr.,John H. Glenn, Jr., Walter M. Schirra,Alan B. Shepard, Jr., and the lateDonald K. “Deke” Slayton.

The goal of the foundation is tostrengthen America’s position in scienceand technology by awarding scholar-ships to third and fourth year under-graduates and graduates who havedemonstrated keen mental ability,self-disciple and high creative drivein the science or engineering field oftheir choice. Candidates are nominatedby faculty members from 15 educa-tional institutions.

A student chapter of the AmericanHelicopter Society was estab-

lished in February. The main goal ofthe chapter is “to promote the studyand appreciation of vertical flightamong Purdue students and faculty,”stated Professor William Crossley, chapter advisor. The 12 charter mem-bers of AHS are busy developing aHuman-Powered Helicopter Project.

“The Purdue Human-PoweredHelicopter Project is an endeavor toconstruct an aircraft that can hoverabove the ground, powered only bythe pilot—much like the GossamerCondor and Gossamer Albatrosshuman powered aircraft. The teamis hoping to first construct a rotor-craft capable of achieving sustained

hover to capture the world record forthe longest human-powered hover. This is meant to be a stepping stonetowards winning the Igor Sikorskyprize, a contest established in 1980by the national AHS organization,”stated Professor Crossley.

Alumni are invited to help AHSby volunteering to be a speaker at astudent meeting, providing financialmaterials and or technical support, and “simply spreading the wordthat Purdue University has an AHSchapter and that rotorcraft researchis being conducted here,” statedProfessor Crossley.
