In this Tuscan kitchen decorating mini-book, I am going to attempt to do what most would consider to be pretty close to impossible. I am going to take the sections in this little book and get you as close as possible to being able to overcome any existing fears or doubts that you may have within yourself when it comes to producing a beautiful kitchen that embarks the essence of Tuscany.

This little book contains a foundation for transforming your kitchen into a space that will remind you of Old World Tuscany… I’m going to give you a little bit of education and history of the traditional Tuscan kitchen… and some quick tips and tricks to help you create a warm and inviting space — designed for gathering together and entertaining your family and friends… A space that will provide warmth and comfort— and create the most amazing memories that will be a major contributor to your new life in your new space.

Section 1: The History of the Tuscan Kitchen

The kitchens have always been a place for gathering family and friends together. Years and years ago, the Tuscany farmhouse had no plumbing and heating, so the grand hearth which was typically located in the central portion of the house—the great room—served as both the main source for heating as well as the place for cooking in the home.

The traditional gathering table in a Tuscany kitchen was made of hard, solid wood. A large rustic farmhouse table--often dark in color with wooden benches or hard individual chairs. A Tuscany kitchen typically was furnished with large furniture pieces that were worn, but functional. Kitchen furniture, like standalone cabinetry, were often mis-matched in size and style, but certainly served its purpose for keeping the space well organized and clutter-free.

The walls of the Tuscany kitchen were typically white in color--often made with stone and plaster, or stucco materials. Around the space you would find accessories such as terra cotta canisters and urns, colorful pottery and ceramic bowls and pitchers that would bring out color, and added warmth to the room. For application of color to the walls, Tuscany houses would have plastered walls painted with hues and tones of deep earthy terra cotta, brown, oranges, yellows, deep reds and greens.

Natural materials like hard wood, stone, slate, tile and marble were commonly used for

flooring.

On the ceiling, you would often find exposed wood beams which were used to hold up the building structure. Exposed wood beams continue to remain a major historical representation of true Tuscany. Beams are commonly used in today’s Tuscany style home designs.

Today, homeowners all over the world are passionate about continuing the traditional charm by bringing the look and feel of old Tuscany into their homes. There are certain elements that can bring a Tuscany design to life. Some of the major components include wall color and texture, furniture, cabinetry, flooring, accessories, linens and more.

Section 2: Tuscan Walls and Flooring

When decorating your kitchen Tuscan style, one of the major components that will give you the ‘Tuscany feel’ are the walls. Painting your walls is actually one of the fastest ways to get that rustic, earthy feel in your space. There are a couple of things to consider when preparing to work on your kitchen walls-- in this section, we’ll talk specifically about color selection and texture.

Tuscan Paint Colors for Kitchen Walls The colors you select for your Tuscan kitchen (re)design really are what set the tone for warmth and provides that cozy feeling of Tuscany. Applying paint color to a wall is actually a simple, fast and relatively inexpensive way to incorporate a new vibe into any space. Since Tuscany colors are inspired by nature, it really makes it easy to bring the outdoors into your kitchen. The colors of Tuscany are drawn from the Mediterranean sea, green land, blue sky and earth. Note that certain Tuscany colors work better as accent walls and trim, and tiles and baseboards, rather than as the primary wall color for an entire kitchen. I’ll let you know when this is the case when discussing each group of colors.

Tuscan wall colors typically range from light to dark as they each represent the elements of Tuscany, so depending on the feel of the space you are going for, you’ve got both warm and cool colors to choose from.

Yellows:

Yellows are common and often known as the most ideal selection in Tuscan kitchen decorating. You can go with a soft yellow or cream, sunflower yellow to golden yellows or ochre- like a dried mustard color. An example of how you could incorporate ochre could be by applying the color to all walls in the kitchen, or as a simple accent - applying the color to one wall to create a sunny, brighter look and feel. For the remaining walls, you could apply more of a neutral color, like a cream color.

Reds:

Certainly the colors in the Tuscan reds can make an impact in a Tuscan kitchen (re)design. Earthy, dark reds are a great choice for wall color, as there are many shades which can include rust reds, deep wine reds and lighter shades like a pinkish terra cotta. With that said, you should keep in mind that if you choose to

go with a darker red color for your walls, this tends to make a space appear to be smaller. So, often the Tuscan reds are nicely used for accenting in the kitchen, more so than for a primary selection of wall color in the kitchen. Working with a brick red color for a single wall to create a strong area and focal point in the space prevents the kitchen from being overly dark. For this space, consider paint techniques on remaining walls that incorporate a mixture of the brick red color with additional colors in the area of creams, whites and yellows. This is how to bring the brick red together. Red ochre provides a sophisticated look and feel in Tuscan themes.

Orange:

Orange is a great color that also warms up a space and provides the look and feel of a Tuscan farmhouse kitchen. Orangey terra cotta colors definitely represent Tuscany appropriately as does burnt orange. Terra cotta is a soothing color agains bold, earth tones in drapes and soft furnishings. You can try bringing more orange out into your decor with copper pans as accent pieces, or by adding a poppy orange color using art or ceramic pieces. Orange colors look amazing when incorporated in Tuscany design against dark wrought iron pot racks and durable granite countertops.

Greens:

Olive and sage are earthy greens that work well in a Tuscan kitchen as accenting colors. Perhaps for trim, you could go with an olive green baseboard and accent wall. Continue the color in the decor with accent pieces such as art, towels and dishes.

Browns:

Applying light browns or tan colors are fabulous for primary paint colors for Tuscan walls. A great way to go in this case would be adding an accent wall with a green or red color as mentioned above. Even a darker brown, similar to autumn-type of browns, would be a great accent color. Use dark brown colors that have a bit of yellow tint in them. Try to stay clear of dark browns such as rich chocolate brown colors.

Whites:

Certainly an off-white or creamy antique white color is perfect for brightening up a Tuscany style kitchen. Applying white or off-white on kitchen walls is true to traditional houses in Tuscany. White smoothes out the roughness in in hard stone and is great contrasting with natural hard wood flooring and furniture as well as bold, vibrant colors in linens and fabrics in Tuscan style decorating. Most Tuscany houses have plastered white walls inside with colorful accenting pieces and decor. The exterior of the house is typically where you will find the wide range of colors, like terra cotta main exteriors with sage green window shutters. Grand arched doorways and windows with flower planters.

Blues:

Blue represents the refreshing waters and bright skies of Tuscany. These colors range light to deeper Mediterranean sea blues.

Textured Kitchen Walls Adding texture to your walls will create a dramatic look and feel in your Tuscan kitchen. Remember, Tuscany style decorating is all about Old World charm, so by adding technique to your decor you will give it an ‘aged’ appearance--as if you’ve literally broken the walls out of a true Tuscany farmhouse and placed them into your kitchen. The walls of a Tuscan kitchen mimic true Tuscany kitchen walls as they were typically plaster or stucco over stone and painted. Textures can be applied by layering colors to create an authentic, aged look. There are also materials that can be purchased from your local hardware store that will help create texture techniques simply to your walls to produce an antique look and feel. Materials include stucco and Venetian plaster. Sand can also be used for a lighter look and feel.

Tuscan Flooring Tuscany style kitchens incorporate natural materials for flooring. Tuscan floors typically are made of hard wood, slate, tile such as terra cotta, or marble--which when laid out as marble chips in a design, it is known as terrazzo.

Tuscan flooring incorporates neutral colors, often light in color to create an expansive look and feel in the kitchen. The less patterns and designs in the flooring, the better-- when it comes to opening up the space. Patterns tend to produce a ‘closed in’ look and feel in spaces. Stained wood flooring is appropriate for this beautiful style design as well.

Section 3: Tuscan Kitchen Furniture and Cabinetry

Tuscan Kitchen Furniture Traditional Tuscan kitchen furniture was often worn and rustic. Pieces were typically mismatched. Heavy, formal pieces with carvings and wrought iron accents could also be found in a Tuscany kitchen. The large farmhouse table was often the spot in the kitchen where meals were both prepared and served. It was the place where family gathered and dined.

Today, most homes have separate breakfast areas, so when decorating your kitchen Tuscany style, you certainly can get away with choosing a large hard wood table and chairs for the breakfast area, and a large center island that replaces the large center-kitchen farmhouse table traditionally used. The center island provides ample food preparation space and room for organization, display cases and storage. The kitchen island can be a large grounded work center or a free-standing style.

Free-standing wood and/ or wrought iron shelving and cupboards for displaying and storing dishes work well in today’s Tuscan style designs. Some homeowners choose to continue to incorporate the mismatched look into their design projects, like adding a hutch for Tuscan dinnerware and ceramics, along with beautiful cabinetry throughout the kitchen. These types of pieces can be found at local thrift stores, yard sales and even right in your basement! Keep in mind that when you are decorating Tuscany style, you are going for old, worn and dinged furniture. Scratch-and-dent is a good thing! You certainly can save money by purchasing distressed wooden kitchen furniture, and investing more into the natural stone materials for flooring and a few authentic Tuscany ceramics and pottery.

Tuscan Cabinetry Depending on the colors you’ve chosen in your color palette, you can incorporate wood kitchen cabinetry to match. Tuscan kitchen cabinets come in many shades and colors as you can also paint your cabinets yourself.

Tuscan cabinets can be worn, as are the wood furniture pieces you may find in the kitchen. They can be white washed to create an aged effect. If you are going for dark, warm wall colors on the walls, consider light or white distressed cabinetry. As for the upper wall cabinets, glass fronted doors create a more open

feel in the kitchen, and are perfect for adding more color when housing dishes and pottery that accent the space. Chicken coop wire used on cabinet doors in traditional Tuscany houses. Completely doorless upper wall cabinets also work well in Tuscany kitchens, however if you choose to go with closed-faced doors on the upper cabinets, choose antique looking hardware and draw pulls made of wrought iron, or non-shiny metals. Tuscan style equals “old”.

Tuscan Countertops and Back Splashes When it comes to countertops and back splashes, the use of natural materials and colors remain the same. Durable materials such as granite or marble are ideal selections for countertops in a Tuscan style kitchen. Smooth polished surfaces add a beautiful touch to the space and amplify the look of

the kitchen design. The color of your countertops should harmonize with your wall color. Try to install countertops that require the least amount of maintenance. Again, granite most certainly is a fabulous choice.

Italian hand painted mosaics and tiles can be a beautiful addition to your Tuscany inspired kitchen. Back splashes can be made with accent colors being brought out from your color palette. Back splashes can be a lovely focal point in your kitchen.

Sinks and Fixtures Common sink styles in a Tuscany kitchen are farmhouse sinks, also known as apron sinks. Apron sinks come in different colors. Home owners often choose white, copper or stainless steel--which ever appropriate for their design and decor. The sink faucets commonly are bronze, brass or antique copper. Bridge faucets are amazing with farmhouse apron sinks. You can also consider other style faucets such as Goose Neck faucets, remembering to keep in mind that you really want to stay clear of shiny metals. We are going for an Old World Tuscan look.

Section 4: Tuscan Lighting

The light fixtures in a Tuscany kitchen are commonly made of wrought iron. Lighting style comes in a variety of forms. Wall sconces and chandeliers are two popular fixture types.

Traditional Tuscany homes used to be dark. The main purpose was to keep the home cooler in the hot Italian sun. Being that Tuscany houses were made of stone, the homes were cool much of the time. In today’s Tuscan design, we aim to balance color in a way that continues to mimic Tuscan sunset without sacrificing comfort. With that said, lighting is really important but keep in mind that natural sunlight remains an essential element in a Tuscan style home.

Today’s Tuscan design has come a long way since the traditional days in Tuscany. With homes being more spacious and open, this style design manages to use lighting to maintain that true Tuscany warmth and comfort. This is why Tuscan style design is so desirable.

Choosing the right Tuscan Lighting When choosing Tuscan light fixtures, try to stay clear of new and modern styles. Remember, Tuscan interior design is all about the antique look. If there is one company that I will talk about over and over again, it is Plumbing Surplus tuscan light fixtures . They have the best prices on light fixtures, sinks and faucets. Definitely sift through their website, I guarantee you will find fabulous products. From apron sinks, to bridge faucets to light fixtures… You will find what you want, and the prices will be nice to your pockets! It is definitely a great thing, to be able to save when you are remodeling your home. Click Here for quick lighting tips. Finding fixtures and sconces from yard sales are a sure thing. I actually have many pieces that have been passed over to me by my mother that work very well in my home.

As it is essential in most interior designs, lighting in Italian decorating is the same. Keeping in mind the importance of “Old World”, rustic charm. It is however okay, (and expected), to choose some modern styles such as recessed for your task light selection. That is perfectly fine. Adding Tuscan elements that also house lights such as wine and pot racks sustain and balance Italian style. When

choosing Tuscan light fixtures, stick with muted metals, and try to stay clear of very shiny fixtures.

Hanging a lovely wrought iron or bronze chandelier over your kitchen table can create a relaxed atmosphere using soft lighting. Tuscan kitchens are bright and airy. Natural light shining through windows add a warm ambiance in the space.

Individual wall sconces can be added in the Tuscany kitchen to provide additional lighting and visual interest. Some homeowners enjoy the look of candles to add a warm glow.

When purchasing lighting for your kitchen, take a trip to local lighting stores, or online specialty

lighting stores as you will have more of a selection that fits the Tuscan theme. Ask about what type of bulb would be best based on the feel you want to achieve in your Tuscan kitchen design. You want to ensure you get

the right finish on your light fixtures as well.

Tuscan Lighting Tips Tuscan Light is an important element in Tuscan interior design. You want to capture the feeling of Old World charm in your Tuscan Style Decorating. Its important to choose your light fixtures carefully! Nothing too shiny or flashy! Choose mute metals, and wrought iron light fixtures.

General Tuscany Lighting Style Quick Tips!

1. Look for wrought iron light fixtures with candelabra shapes. Representative of Tuscany lighting. Reinforces the rustic theme.

2. Consider metal wall sconces in a Tuscan kitchen for lighting.

3. Bold candles are excellent for soft light. Makes a big statement too.

4. Use Tuscany Pendant Lights and chandeliers for highlighting colors with antique lighting.

5. If mosaic tile is in your Tuscan decor, know that just the right Tuscan lighting will reflect and bring out the beauty in each tile nicely.

6. Use mirrors on walls and table tops to reflect light. It can be done beautifully without a blinding effect.

7. Consider refurbished light fixtures to maintain Old World Charm

8. For romantic parties, consider hanging lanterns with tea lights. This adds warm feelings when entertaining family and friends.

9. Table lamps with ornate scrollwork bases Wrought iron brings the earthy element that is so important in Tuscan decor.

10. Go Old! The Tuscan look is old, your light fixtures should be too.

~ Remember: Sconces and chandeliers are more appropriate in Tuscan style decorating than simply recessed lighting. Many homeowners choose to incorporated units of recessed lighting into their Tuscan kitchen design for extra lighting, which is absolutely fine — you just want to be sure to add key features that keep aligned with traditional Tuscany kitchens.

Section 5: Tuscan Accessories, Dinnerware, Curtains and Linens

Now for the fun part! Accessorizing Tuscany Style! Here is where you can bring out your accenting colors by displaying pottery and baskets throughout the kitchen.

Tuscan Accessories The use of Tuscan accessories in your space adds color and beauty to any Tuscan kitchen design. Accessories in the likes of decorative Tuscan dinnerware displayed on your table work very well. Bringing out color by way of table fabrics and window treatments is an effective way of introducing spice to your decor. Italian style jars with grapes and olives add flavor and represent great tradition.

Look for old Italian ceramics and antique crocks. With these pieces displayed openly in the kitchen, you will accomplish the Old World attitude you want. You can also consider a small art like a painting or Tuscan photo to be displayed in the kitchen. A special addition that I love recommending is a beautiful bouquet of

sunflowers. This can work with either freshly cut, or faux.

After the wall color and texture is applied, you will immediately notice a new vibe of Tuscany. Place your dark stained wooden table or island in the center of your cooking area. A nice Tuscan urn to hold your sunflowers on top of your island adds the sunny side of Tuscany. With the antique Tuscan accessories, display them scattered on the counter tops, underneath the island (if available), on open shelving of cabinetry (if available), and for larger urns, place in corners of the space. The beauty of Tuscan decor is that things do not have to be “clean cut”. There is no particular way at all that you have to organize your Tuscany attributes. In a Tuscan style kitchen the cabinetry and pieces are mismatched. That is what makes the design so comforting and cozy.

Countertops are perfect for showcasing Tuscany inspired canisters and containers.

Tuscan Dinnerware In Tuscan dinnerware, you are sure to find beautiful hand painted designs. Mediterranean dinnerware displays vibrant blends of color which represents true Tuscan art. Tuscan style dinnerware is a wonderful choice for accenting when you are French

country decorating as this type of dinnerware can be a success for going along with your Tuscan dining room furniture or Tuscan kitchen design.

Nothing brings family together like a beautiful Mediterranean table with matching accessories. Tuscany dinnerware offers a unique rustic style that evokes the beautiful countryside of Italy.

Tuscany dinnerware is fabulous for pulling out colors for your Tuscan home decor. It can make a wonderful color palette, giving you a variety of ideas for walls and flooring as well. With the magnificent rolling hills of Tuscany, you can find true pleasure and imagination by bringing Tuscan style dinnerware into your dining decor.

Tuscan Kitchen Windows: Curtains and Linens One thing you can certainly pull of in a Tuscan style kitchen design is keeping your windows bare. Your kitchen will be beautiful, especially while letting the natural light into the space. Some homeowners choose to dress up their windows by adding colorful or stained shutters on the inside of the window — which have the ability to open and shut — to let in outside lighting and to close for a little bit of privacy. A beautiful iron window gate with freshly potted greenery, ceramic decor and accessories is an incredible added feature to a Tuscan kitchen space.

Tuscan kitchen curtains will provide balance for your décor. Windows are an extremely important element in a Tuscan space. It can warm up a room in a cool climate, as well as cool down a space in a warm climate. This is what you should think about when you are styling. Here, we are still going for earthiness, which means color selection and texture. The beauty of decorating Tuscan style is that the curtain types are simple. You can choose Tuscan patterns or solids; —whatever works with your design scheme.

One thing that’s for sure is that color works together with texture. Keep that in mind, as you sift through your fabric options. See, your walls are a significant contribution to the color of your space. With the harmonizing of tones and textures, your accent pieces will introduce some of the rust reds, deep blues and greens.

!15

Pictured above: My favorite Tuscan kitchen window design… :)

Gold, cream colored yellows, Terra cotta, tans and browns for fabric colors are effective. If you have decided to decorate your wall color or cabinets with dark shades, consider going lighter with your curtains. In Tuscany, it is common for the windows to be “exposed”. Only those of simple type curtains drape on Tuscan windows! Did you know that it is common in Tuscany to not have a screen door, but have a fabric hanging in the front doorway? Keeps it cool, and keeps out the bugs! For your kitchen, you can totally get away with plaid or Tuscan striped patterns. Some choose to add splashes of a familiar feathered Tuscan icon—the rooster.

Don’t be afraid to explore and try your ideas out. Be inventive! Think about your curtain rods… Did you ever think of decorating the top with branches? Ooooh! How about placing branches inside a large ceramic floor canister? Let your thoughts flow… This is your space, think it, dream it, create it!
