accomplish this bachelor thesis entitled: “A Study of Dictionary Use by English

Department Students at University Muhammadiyah of Purwokerto”. This thesis is

AT MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF PURWOKERTO

(A Survey Reseacrh on the Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto)

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to observe the dictionary use by English Department students.

The reseach was conducted in Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto. In this

research, the reseacher adopted descriptive as the research method and the design

of this research wa survey. The instrument of the collecting data was

questionnaire. Based on the result data of analysis, there were 85.51% of the

students use bilingual dictionary (E-I dictionary). They are an English Department

students always face the word, sentence, or text in english. That was why the

students often to use bilingual dicitonary (E-I) because they need understand well

the meaning of the words in Indonesian language. Almost in english teaching

learning needs dictionary, that was found from the data of analysis there were

98.55%, which belong to very high score, of the students often used dictionary in

writing activity and the second place was 97.10% on translation activity. The last

result was 91.30% of the students prefer to use electronic dictionary to printed

dictionary, it was because the students thought that electronic dictionary was more

simple and easy to use.
