The publisher Raimondo Rezzonico, whowas president of the festival in the finaltwenty years of the 20th century, was notexaggerating when he said, and continuedto repeat, that it is impossible to imagineLocarno without its festival.The International Competition, theflagship of the Locarno Festival, givesyoung talent the opportunity to rubshoulders with established directors.They share a common concern to questioncinematic form and content. In particular,the festival’s retrospectives havecontributed to this cultural enrichment.
Originating in 1993, this is much youngerthan other well established festivals.Despite its youth, every year it attractsnot just local film-lovers, but also famouscelebrities from around the world.
The only international festival in China,it is a visual feast of films and isdetermined to encourage and rewardnew Asian talent.The festival hasestablished the Asian NewTalents awarddedicated to the creativity of young Asiantalent in the hope of a better future forthe film industry.

The KarlovyVary Film Festival is one ofthe oldest in the world being a pre-wardream of enthusiastic filmmakers whowanted to screen the results of therecently nationalised Czechoslovak filmindustry.
It weathered both financial problems andlack of interest during the early 1990swith the appearance of a number ofimportant international guests such asMilos Forman, Lindsay Anderson,AnnetteBenning and Robert De Niro helpingraise the Festival’s profile.
