Kushmandi Village is situated in South Dinajpur District of West Bengal , about 400 km away from

the bustling city of Kolkata. The village is lush green with trees. Kushmandi villagers have formed a cooperative Society-Kushmandi Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society.

Started during the year 1965-66 with a meagre share capital of Rs 6340/- i.e beginning almost with zero, now kushmandi society has become Role Model for agricultural cooperative movement in West Bengal as society's share capital for 2010-11 has swelled to Rs 196 lakhs.

Out of affection, the author contemplates this society as “KUSHAGRA” which means wisdom and indeed the society has proved its wisdom. Poor and helpless farmers and needy consumers are looked after by the society equally. The society has service motivated multi dimensional approach. The Cooperative department, Govt. of West Bengal has praised the society time and again, West Bengal State Cooperative Bank has certified the society as the best cooperative marketing society of West Bengal during the years 1991-92, 1994-95 and 1995-96. Patil, President, National Federation of Union Cooperatives, New Delhi and was attended by more than 450 delegates.

e Central Zone Conference comprising the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgrah, Gujarat, Maharastra, Goa and Union Territories of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haweli was held in Bhopal on 8th February 2013. e Conference was inaugurated by Shri Gourishankar Bisen, Hon'ble Minister for Cooperation, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh.

In addition to the above coverage this edition of Newsletter also carries success stories of Cooperatives.

prices of local produce of Food Grains/Oil Seeds/Pulses touch the support price level, the society comes forward for the rescue of farmers and arranges procurement at the support price declared by Govt. of India.

About 15 years ago the Society felt the need of a Diesel & Petrol Pump in its area. Diesel is required by local farmers for running tractors tillers and for irrigation purpose. Besides, trucks, buses and cars had to go long distance for getting fuel. The society purchased 0.70 acre land on Raigunj-Balurghat State Highway. After overcoming many bottlenecks during 1997-98 the society has set up a Diesel-cum-Petrol pump which was later on modernized by M/s. Indian Oil Corporation. Subsequently, during 2007-08 the society has set up another Diesel-cum-Petrol pump on State Highway-10(Buniadpur) at Narianpur which was modernized by M/s. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation; both the pumps are running successfully and profitably.

West Bengal is the 2nd largest producer of potatoes in the country; lot of potatoes are grown in Kushmandi area. Since there is acute scarcity of Cold Storages in West Bengal and taking into consideration the hardship of potato growers for want of cold storage, the society felt the need of a cold storage in its area. This was a Herculean task for the society. After overcoming many hurdles, with the financial assistance/loan from State Govt /NCDC, during 2009-10 the society has set up a Multipurpose Cold Storage of 5,500 MT capacity and started storing potatoes in the cold storage. Resultantly, large number of potato growers have been benefitted.

The role of National Co-operative Development Corporation(NCDC), has been that of friend, philosopher and guide of Indian Co-operatives, NCDC

has played an important role in overall development of Kushmandi society. Based on guarantee of West Bengal Govt., during the period from 2003-04 to 2010-11, the society has obtained NCDC’s assistance/soft loans to the extent of 138 lakh and the loans are being refunded by the society regularly in a phased manner.

In the past NAFED was not popularly known to the villagers of West Bengal but thanks to Kushmandi Society who joined with NAFED by starting joint venture on 50:50 basis, the business of marketing of Raw jute, Wheat and Urad. The Society extends support to NAFED for purchasing agricultural commodities as per NAFED’s requirements on outright basis by taking nominal service charges.

The Kushmandi Society is very considerate of local villagers. It encourages the local students by providing financial assistance regularly to the meritorious poor students. The Society celebrates Coop. week every year which motivates the people to be cooperative minded.

Kushmandi Society is a role model for all of the marketing cooperatives who are owned by the farmers, run by the farmers and who work for the betterment of the farmers as well as the consumers.

The other Societies in West Bengal would prosper if they follow the path set by the Kushmandi Society.

I reached this bank of the Jamuna Collecting some so lights from the morning sun And some moon lights from the Full Moon, I did not approach the river to quench my thirst, Did not want to walk upon the morning dew to get wet my legs, I just arrived here to feel What rare sweet melody was Hidden behind the deep of two eyes of Mumtaz! What was that Tanpura, from where strings of melody echoed And took shelter in the lap of the Emperor with oceanic storm surge!

e rare varieties of beautiful roses that exist In the large plain of Persia and plucking the best one from them, e deep blue Indian sky that adored beautiful Seven Rings, All that colours of Seven Rings were intermixed and extracting the best, Taking the most soy wave among all soy waves that play in e Jamuna, the Meghna, the Indus, the Ganges and the Bipasha, Having struck a loving dreamy touch in the heart from e free sweet melody of free ying wings of the birds, e Great Lover Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal - the Palace of Love. Else, with deep devotion and love painted with those colours Wrapped with dreamy, soothing mind attracting love rays of Mumtaz, at marvellous creation of love still waters the eternal ower of love And keeps fresh in deep of the womb of white stone.

All those colours that can an artist keep in his bag, All those melodies that a singer can store in his heart, Picking the rst two alphabets from all alphabets of the world, e love of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz is eternal betting all other love.

Overriding that nite border line between day and night, In the deep of white stone heart with endless benevolence, Are painted only with colours of love, the colours of ecstasy, Which may be compared only with that love.

e Morning Taj, the Evening Taj and the Moonlit Taj – Still today speak out with another height of Tagore’s writings. Arriving at Taj Mahal, leaders, poets, artists, constructors, travellers get bewildered. Coming here gets lost the young couple aer crossing long love aairs, Gets startled the pregnant mother, those young boys and girls- Who are in search of the meaning of earthly life with teen age feelings, And get overwhelmed with deep emotions visiting the eternal garden of love.

And Me, the lonely self, crossing a half century of life, now at the Taj in the falling sun, Desire again to return back to that bank of the river, Where once was incessant lovely ow of colourful water.

Before the Taj Mahal, the Time Line gets disappeared, e Eternal Love story stands victorious over the Time.

Fatehpur SikriOvercoming the time Fatehpur Sikri still speaks in the light of morn How much colorful and bright were those days and nights several hundred years ago, Akbar the Great, his Navaratna (nine gems) glittering court Miyan Tansen, Raja Birbal, Abdur Rahim Khan-I-Khanan, Abul Fazl and many other sagacious persons;

In papers the middle nger and forenger of the Emperor were still and motionless But the glory spreads all around him like the waves of violent seas Merge the roses in the bosom of the colored stone in aesthetic harmony Wearing the abir of dreams, the great Jama Masjid, the Buland Darwaza, Laudable with the graceful ne works is Diwan-I-Khas, Diwan- Khana-I-Am Boundary walls, eye soothing magnicent buildings spreads the light Anup Talao and unparalleled mausoleum Where sleeps Saint Salim Chishti illuminating the whole domain.

On the canvas painted by the skilful artistes. Appear the owers, birds Rains, moonlight, rainbow Tune, musical measures, tempo, Over the day month years, passing the rivers mountains forests and glades Akbar the Great climbs up the stairs of time to welcome A group of strangers from Asia and Africa with the utmost love As if the past and the present melts at the time of time
