Audley Square HouseMayfair, LondonGDV: £2Billion

Situated in the west end ward of the City of Westminster, Audley Square is located in the heart of Mayfair. The area is characterised by an intense level and range of activities and contains some of London’s most famous tourist attractions and iconic public spaces. The Audley Square garage site was owned by Westminster City Council and used as a public car park and filling station. This building has now been demolished and work is well underway with the construction of the new Audley Square House in Mayfair comprising 29 residential units including townhouses, lateral apartments and penthouses.

The residences are grouped around a central courtyard garden providing an internal focal point for residents. The massing of the building is reduced at the upper levels by significant set-backs which create private terraces for the apartments, providing outdoor amenity space.

The new Portobello SquareNorth Kensington, LondonProject Value: £250 million

Led this project comprising almost one thousand new dwellings from early planning stage through to the production of construction drawings. Phase One comprised the decanting and demolition of the existing blocks in the south eastern part of the Wornington Green site, the creation of new roads, the construction of 3 new ‘blocks’ and the re-provision of park space to the north.

The new internal roads consist of Wheatstone Road, roughly parallel with Munro Mews but aligned to retain the existing row of mature trees along the edge of the park; Athlone Gardens, parallel to Wheatstone Road and forming the southern boundary of the new park; and Athlone Gate, perpendicular to the above roads and connecting the two.

These roads define the three new blocks which reintegrate the site into the urban form and grain of the surrounding context. Wheatstone Road and Athlone Gardens meet Portobello Road opposite the existing Bonchurch and Faraday Roads respectively, further reintegrating the site into the surrounding context.

This is the first time we have worked with Stuart on a project and we have been delighted with his innovative, sensitive and beautiful design for the proposed new Celtic Christian Centre. The project is in an area of outstanding natural beauty, incorporates an important listed church and manse and a brief for new buildings that calls for 100% sustainability, functionality yet reflecting our Celtic heritage. Stuart’s solution has met with universal praise from all of our group and other external stakeholders.

Sannox Celtic Christian Creative Arts Centre, ArranProject Value: £3.1 million

The Sannox Christian Centre seeks to echo the architectural, aesthetic and spiritual aspiration of the early Celtic Christians. As a key requirement of the project the retention, repair and full refurbishment of the existing buildings has been given priority. The Church, the Manse and Dundarroch form the core of the project with new buildings linked to the listed church and manse restricted to single storey. The design of the new buildings, particularly the extensions to Sannox church, draw inspiration from Skellig Michael, an early 7thC Celtic Christian monastic community off the west coast of Ireland with all buildings, including ‘beehive’ structures, built in natural stone. The existing buildings will be retained in a white finish, as they are at present, to ensure that these are prominent and eye-catching. The external walls of the new buildings will be constructed in dry stone walling in all conspicuous areas and undulate in plan and elevation to reflect the rolling nature of the surrounding countryside.

The stone chapel which forms the centre piece of the new cloistered garden will have a monastic quality to induce contemplative forms of prayer and worship. Stained glass panels will include Celtic geometric patterns where these are synergous with the Christian ethos of the centre. Although the exterior of the buildings present a robust and protective aesthetic the idea is reversed within the courtyard. The floor of the undulating circulation space would be finished in materials similar to those used in the courtyard to reduce the visual internal and external interface through the glass wall.

The geometry of the healing garden is highly symbolic based on a Celtic trinity knot superimposed upon a Celtic cross. The trinity knot depicts the coequal and indivisible nature of God. The cross forms the central point of the geometric pattern from which the main activity spaces radiate. The high cross is strategically placed to be visible from all areas. The Celtic Christian ‘theme of three’ – Cave, Refectory and Road – will be applied to three parts of the garden surrounding the Beehive Chapel. The High Cross will tell the story of Sannox, past and present.

Kazlicesme Masterplan, IstanbulProject Value: £500 million

Led the successful design team in this international competition to produce the winning entry and worked with the client’s project team to develop the design from Concept through to Scheme Design stage. The project is now under construction.

The masterplan concept aims to build in community, soul and the kind of urban complexity that is famously exemplified by the richly textured city of Istanbul. Layering a broad range of uses and facilities with a clear division between public and private space and a juxtaposition of soft and hard city spaces. This creates streets, squares, alley-ways, parks, courtyards framed by contrasting contemporary and traditional architecture. This sense of focus lies at the heart of the masterplan.

The historic buildings which are to be preserved each have a strong identity. With careful adaptation they have the potential to convert to unique new residences and community buildings invigorating the masterplan with valuable historical and cultural heritage, bringing a unique energy to the development.

A paramount factor in evolving the masterplan has been to maximise sea views from the living accommodation. Even glimpsed views create considerable added value. The masterplan configuration consists of carefully located towers, with all apartments provided with balconies, oriel windows overlooking streets leading to the sea, south facing courtyards and gardens with beautiful colour planting, rills, fountains and reflecting water.

Craigcrook Castle Care Home, EdinburghProject Value: £ 8.5 million

Stuart Carr is an excellent architect, with many care home designs under his belt, who knows the intricacies and constraints of the sector like no other. For operational efficiency, resident and staff comfort, enjoyment and convenience, Stuart has a total success rating. I would recommend him wholeheartedly.

Peter Hutchison, Director Central Scotland Healthcare

”“

Central Scotland Healthcare’s proposal to build a new care home within the grounds of Craigcrook Castle offers an ideal opportunity to remove the insensitive annexe extension to the castle built in the 1970’s and to improve the castle’s landscape setting.

Built in 1542 by William Adamson the castle was extensively remodelled by William Playfair in 1835 and, throughout the 19th Century, played host to a number of literary leading lights of the time including Sir Walter Scott, Charles Dickens, Hans Christian Andersen, George Eliot and Alfred Lord Tennyson.

The new building has been designed using traditional forms but with clean, simple lines and modern detailing to ensure that it sits comfortably in relation to Craigcrook Castle. With its use of natural stone the new structure is expected to have a timeless quality which will age gracefully. Internally the facilities on offer will be state-of-the-art with a high standard of comfort and care.

The building has been designed to suit off-site manufacture using volumetric modules for the main mass of the building. This method will result in significantly reduced amount of time spent on site during the construction program resulting in reduced road traffic and other inconveniences to residents nearby.

Tannadice House Restoration, AngusProject Value: £1.2 million

This project was undertaken on behalf of a wealthy London client with a love of Georgian architecture. The building had been derelict for many years and had been partially destroyed by fire and subsequently converted to a number of apartments during Edwardian times. My brief required the restoration of the building to its 1832 splendour. This involved much research into the internal details prevailing within houses of this quality at the time. The interior of the building was finished in national trust colours and authentic materials and moulding details were used throughout.

Bath City Centre Extension

Project Value: £150 million

WWorked with the Chetwoods project team and Laurie Chetwood as lead designer on this exciting new venture to regenerate a blighted part of Bath on the western side of the River Avon. The principal objective was to create a visual and physical link with Bath City Centre whilst providing a range of uses for the site including residential, commercial and retail arranged to create a Grand Parade as an appropriate feature at the western limits of the East / West Culture Axis. The Grand Parade is intersected by a proposed Linear Park anchoring the project to the river and creating high quality pedestrian andand cycle movement routes with amenity spaces. My design for the new Crystal Crescent and the contemporary terrace of town houses facing the Georgian Norfolk Buildings seeks to echo the scale, mass, proportions and attention to detail of the existing architecture using a mixture of modern and traditional materials and a simple, uncomplicated architectural aesthetic. An underlying square and diagonal grid based on Palladio’s Villa Rotonda has been used to generate the plan form.

Renslade HouseProject Value: £60 million

This project involved an assessment of the development potential of an attractive site fronting onto the River Exe in Exeter. The site was occupied by an office building which was in need of refurbishment and modernisation. The double curvature of the building presented some challenges in planning effectively and efficiently for alternative uses due to the irregular column arrangement where the tower element passed through the lower podium building. My solution therefore considered an alternative use for the site which demolishes the existing building and replaces it with a purpose-designed Build-to-Rent project.

By splitting the mass of the central section and moving the resultant towers some distance apart from each other we greatly improve the quality of light and views for the residents. Local residents to the North of the building also benefit from these improvements and the building itself forms an attractive feature in a prominent location adjacent to the river.

Chapman Taylor | Residential Team

Umbrellahaus, a build to rent housing solutionProject Value: £40 million

My concept for Umbrellahaus, developed with the residential team at Chapman Taylor, is a sustainable, affordable, offsite housing model that can be constructed at scale and speed to provide much needed housing for communities within our towns and cities. This method of delivery produces high quality,

lightweight construction responsive to its context, which can be seamlessly integrated into the existing city fabric. Aimed at those who face little prospect of acquiring a home, Umbrellahaus proposes a new funding and delivery model which unlocks the Government’s land assets; encourages institutional investment; streamlines the planning system; encourages more players in the construction market and economically benefits the whole community.

Umbrellahaus housing modules range from one-bed to three-bed family units, and provide a choice of homes to reflect people’s ability to pay and the different stages in their lives. All unit sizes generally follow the London Plan space standards that can be reduced in size where appropriate to match market demands. With Umbrellahaus, it is possible to upgrade to a one-bed from a micro-apartment, or downsize

to a one-bed from a three-bed when circumstances change, without leaving the community. The modules are designed to be thermally efficient, maximise daylight, minimise maintenance costs and encourage recycling.

Umbrellahaus modules will have LABC-type approval to fast-track through building regulation approval procedures and be backed by the Building Offsite Property assurance scheme. Modules are scaled for easy transport to site, with offsite construction providing factory conditions which encourage clean, energy-efficient and accurate assembly. This method of delivery produces high-quality, lightweight, versatile construction, which can be seamlessly integrated into the existing city fabric.

I have spoken about this concept at various conferences in London and elsewhere in the U.K. and have now developed the ideas further in the City Village Communities concept.

Brent Cross Residential, Barnet, LondonProject Value: £7.5 million

My design for Plot 113 forms part of the overall masterplan for the redevelopment of Brent Cross shopping centre. The site slopes approximately two metres from north to south and this has been taken into account in the design for the new, 52 apartment, four-storey residential development. All of the trees suitable for retention will provide an attractive, mature landscape environment for the pedestrian and vehicular approach to the housing. In addition to providing much needed housing the new development will act as a visual screen between the existing residential area to the west and the new multi-storey car park. The road and MSCP environment to the east will be partially screened by new trees but the design ensures that most of the flats have their lounges looking westwards towards the greener residential areas. All flats have been designed to the space standards set out in the London Plan with wheelchair flats increased in area by 20% to ensure ease of movement. We have provided 8 larger flats for full wheelchair compliance across a range of sizes.

Media City - Phase 2 - Salford Project Value: £500 million

In little over seven years, a derelict port has been transformed into a creative portal and it is now a waterfront destination, with digital creativity and learning at its heart. A joint venture between Peel Media and Legal and General Capital, MediaCityUK is home to BBC North, ITV, Coronation Street, SIS LIVE, the University of Salford, dock10 and over 250 innovative businesses. This bespoke community features one of the biggest HD studio complexes in Europe and is complemented by nearly 400 apartments, a hotel and a distinctive range of bars and restaurants. I acted as residential design expert to the team during the design of Phase 2, comprising eight large development plots with a mixture of residential towers, commercial offices and civic squares.

Arbroath Town MissionProject Value: £2.4 million

My design for this scheme seeks to reflect the fishing heritage of Arbroath in its symbolism using reductive and abstract images of trawler, waves and fish to generate the three-dimensional forms of the building. This idea would be followed through in the use of materials with shiplap boarding to the curved external walls and silver aluminium ‘scales’ on the undulating roofs. The Town Mission has been established for many years and offers caring facilities to various groups ranging from disadvantaged young people to lonely elderly people. The sporting and catering facilities are extensively used by numerous local organisations. The new building will consolidate the Mission’s activities on a single site.

Perth Christian CentreProject Value: £25 million

This concept seeks to create a national Christian conference centre in the heart of Scotland to facilitate the ongoing life and ministry of the Perth Christian Centre, supporting their charitable work amongst the poor, elderly and infirm. The church has outgrown its existing buildings and has a clear vision for a large auditorium which will accommodate the church’s meeting and worship requirements whilst providing conference facilities for other organisations throughout the week.

The Oaks, PragueProject Value: £40 million

This project for a property developer in Prague provided an opportunity for an interesting and somewhat quirky approach to the creation of a new town square. The space standards utilised throughout the project are much larger than the areas which we work to in the UK. As residential design consultant and peer reviewer to the Prague-based design team I ensured that the design remained within sensible parameters

These particular buildings form a small part of a much larger development masterplan covering an area of 190 acres within a suburb of Prague. The landscape setting is quite stunning with views to open countryside and the city of Prague. John Knox Road, St. AndrewsProject Value: £11 million

This site extending to 2.81 hectares sits on the northern edge of the medieval town of St Andrews. It was required to be developed as affordable housing with 0.81 hectares of this area given over to a nursing home and 18 assisted living flats. The remaining two hectares accommodated 82 housing units in a combination of house types including semi-detached, terraced housing and flats. All rear gardens are accessible from the courtyard areas but are screened for privacy.

The entire development has been designed to achieve “barrier-free” status. This ensures that wheel chairs and motorised buggies can move freely around all parts of the development and gain access to St Andrews town centre. The development is also cycle friendly with storage for bicycles provided. The housing mix seeks to create an integrated community with provision for wheel chair users, elderly ambulant disabled and family units of various sizes.

You have successfully created the first Homezone in Scotland.

At this stage we are dependent on our SAP and NHER calculations which indicate that we can come close to our target but we are awaiting a final conclusion to our discussions with Scottish and Southern Energy regarding the energy tariff which is to be used in the calculations before we can be certain about the figures. Even then the calculations are based on the best available methods of assessment but can not be confirmed until the follow-on project when the houses will be inhabited and monitored. Having carried out a proper assessment of the likely additional costs of energy for running appliances and lighting etc. we are confident that total energy bills will fall outside of the danger zone for fuel poverty. We can reasonably expect additional electricity use to add 37 kWh/m2.

This would add 3,596 kWh (37 x 97.2 m2) to the house. Looking at tariffs and standing charges already available we can assume electricity costs including standing charges of around £510. If we conservatively assume a gas bill for heating and hot water of £140 we would have a total annual energy cost of around £650 or £12:50 per week. Provided household income exceeds £125 per week fuel poverty is avoided where this is defined as higher expenditure on total energy costs of more than 10% of household income. In keeping with the low-tech ethos locally sourced windows are hybrid aluminium and timber composite frames with double-glazing at 1.2 W/m2K, rather than PassivHaus triple at 0.8 W/m2K. The U-value is ‘whole of window’ rather than the more misleading ‘centre pane’ calculation.

This takes account of the thermal performance of the frame and any air leakage. Differential movement between the fully recycled and recyclable aluminium exterior facing and the timber frame is overcome by allowing a gap between the different materials with sliding fixings. Frames are jointed by a proprietary method using nano technology, which prevents joints opening in future, conceals all end grain cuts and seals end grain against the possibility of moisture absorption . The frame is manufactured from engineered timber with knots, and other weaknesses removed. Sitka Spruce is the timber used due to its excellent thermal properties and ability to take any type of finish. All timber is sourced from PEFC approved forests owned and managed by the manufacturer. All engineered timber is designed to reduce wastage to a minimum. Wastage goes into multiple particle boards or biomass pellets. Local fabrication reduces transportation. Heating is by standard radiators fuelled by gas, rather than low-temperature and low-energy alternatives such as heat pumps serving warm-floor serpentines although we may wish to look at such alternatives in the future. We are installing a condensing gas boiler with a SEDBUK efficiency rating of 90.3% which is the highest efficiency level we could achieve for an A-rated wall-mounted boiler.

Slightly higher efficiencies are possible with floor mounted boilers but these would be difficult to accommodate and wasteful of space. The system allows for the water to be separately timed with the option to programme the space heating for three periods throughout the day and the hot water for two periods. The low carbon mechanical ventilation and heat recovery unit is about the size of a medium suitcase and is located in the top loft space. The unit costs between £15 - £18 per year to run for a family of four and has a coefficient of performance rating of 1:35, i.e. for every watt used to run the unit it delivers back the equivalent in heat of 35 watts. The fan runs at quite low speeds but can be boosted automatically to cope with increased moisture. The unit is the quietest available in today’s market with no evidence of sound transference between rooms. Baffles are fitted to the pipes to diminish fan noise transmittance. The kitchen extract point is located a short distance away from the cooker to avoid grease entering the system and a recycling cooker hood to catch grease and steam is fitted separately. The duct sizes can be either 125mm diameter or 204 x 60 rectangular. These can pass through the webs of the TJI floor joist to ensure complete concealment. The system is SAP Appendix Q certified with 90% heat transfer efficiency and achieves 0.81 watts per litre per second specific fan power.

The Glasgow HousePrototype Project

This idea won a limited competition set by GHA with my idea of a house which would have a target cost of £100 a year for heating and hot water whilst addressing the problems of fuel poverty and youth unemployment. The concept introduced a new construction method which could be easily understood and implemented by young trainees under supervision and to keep the concept simple, easy to build and relatively inexpensive.

The key features of the design are:

Linking of the houses in semi-detached or terraced arrangements• A simple square plan shape to achieve a cube shaped external envelope• Two-storey construction to reduce footprint and roof size• Lounge and kitchen layout which can be flipped to achieve best orientation• Room in the roof potential without structural alterations• An east, west or south facing sun space to capture passive solar energy• The best available locally manufactured double glazed windows• High levels of insulation to floor, roof and walls in both construction systems• Simple forms of construction to minimise on-site construction complications• Off-site prefabricated roof and floor panels craned into position• Timber kits and kitchens from Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi)• Highly efficient heating system and easy to use controls• Solar -thermal roof panels with integrated twin coil cylinder for hot water• Educational programme for residents in use of systems and ongoing support• Eco-friendly easily maintained gardens with fruit trees and berry bushes• Garden features constructed from reclaimed construction • Homezone neighbourhood layouts to increase security in street play areas •

Crowne Plaza, MarlowProject Value: £18 million

The Crowne Plaza, Marlow, is nestled in 5 acres of beautiful countryside within a stunning lakeside location near Windsor. The client’s aspiration for the building was that it should be a statement of contemporary elegance. Young & Gault invited me to front this project on their behalf after planning consent had been obtained. I was therefore required to oversee the preparation of the detailed construction drawings leading to building regulations approval and I was required to liaise with all parties to ensure the successful execution of the project on site. My contract was complicated by the client’s decision to change the status of the project after construction had commenced on site from a Holiday Inn to a Crowne Plaza which resulted in a review of all aspects of the detailed design to achieve contemporary detailing and finishes appropriate to the level at which the hotel was to be pitched. I worked with Mike Blackshaw of the Design Coalition who were the interior designers for the project and also Ginni Blom, winner of a silver medal in association with Prince Charles for their healing garden at the 2003 Chelsea Flower Show. The project was exciting by virtue of the many challenges which it presented during the construction programme.

Student Residences, LancasterProject Value: £90 million

As part of a major redevelopment of part of Lancaster city centre the Lancaster university requested a design for 1000 new student residences grouped around courtyards and incorporating three existing listed buildings. My design provides accommodation for undergraduates and postgraduates in a mixture of town house, cluster flats, studios and 2dios, responding to a range of needs. The scale of the development allows for a range of architectural approaches to the different buildings within a unified architectural language.

Sochi Residential - Led Mixed Use Project, RussiaProject Value: £300 million

Headed up the U.K. design team for the Beliy Parus Complex on a site of approximately 4 hectares in Sochi, Russia, on the beach front of the Black Sea.

The project is to be developed as a Residential and Resort complex of up to 240,000 square metres. The scheme optimises the value and number of high quality luxury apartments, each enjoying dual aspect views across the sea to the south and west, and to the mountains to the north and east, within a dramatic, vibrant resort community, supported by high quality retail, business, and leisure amenities.

The commercial importance of the hotel development has been identified as a crucial element within the overall scheme, with its location and prominence deemed to be strategically important in maximising the value of the residential development.

The residential towers are arranged in section and plan as interlocking duplex apartments served by an internal access corridor on alternate floors. In this way, each apartment enjoys dual aspect and frontage to both the sea and mountains.

Port Baku Residences, AzerbaijanProject Value: £130 million

The Site is a 4 hectare parcel located immediately southeast of Port Baku Towers. It is excellently located to the east of the city centre with unobstructed views to the Caspian Sea over a new city promenade park. The site has a basically rectangular shape with good access to major road networks. It is in an ideal location for a high end city centre residential development.

The proposal is for three dominant towers framed by a wave inspired crescent building. The towers and arched wave form a high “bookend” to the Baku Port developments creating a sense of completion and enclosure to the west.

Residential

The wave and lighthouse buildings can provide over 900 high quality apartments, the majority of which boast dual aspect configurations affording not only stunning views straight out to the Caspian Sea but also views out over the wider city which is especially attractive when illuminated at night. Each apartment has a balcony with penthouses in the wave having their own external terrace. The residential floor plates are developed with high efficiency, buildability and flexibility as priorities.

Podium

Showrooms and larger scale retail units in the podium open onto the main streets with double height display windows. The opportunity to add retail or support areas to mezzanines makes this space very flexible.

Club House

Integrated into the base of the central tower, with unobstructed coastal views, the club house offers an aspirational facility to residents. Ramped access from Neftchilar Avenue connecting to the perimeter shared surface allows residents to be dropped off at the Club House’s double height reception, giving a strong sense of arrival and an excellent first impression of the development for visitors.

The Cheshire Extra Care pfi ProjectFive new care villages for Cheshire County CouncilProject Value: £78 million

My role in this project involved liaising with the client, the contractor, the planning departments and other stakeholders to rationalise and improve the designs and obtain a sign-off of all planning conditions. I then led the project team through the production information stage and supervised the construction of all five care villages through to completion and handover. Crewe is the largest of the five new Extra-Care Villages in Cheshire. At the time of its construction it was the largest timber frame project in Europe. The communal facilities provided for the residents including a cafeteria and restaurant, library, hairdressing salon, gymnasium and various lounges are all grouped around an impressive central atrium.
