The Flow of Learning
Learning Modes
The Learning Ecosystem
The learning ecosystem is becoming
increasingly complex. It is harder than
ever for educators to engage students,
enjoy teaching - and ensure that
constructive, valuable and worthwhile
learning occurs.
The learning ecosystem needs to be
considered holistically, not only as part
of the building masterplan, but also as
part of the learning masterplan – equally
supporting pedagogy, technology
as well as the physical learning space.
Sebel embarked on a journey of
discovery to better understand the role
that the physical learning space plays in
the learning ecosystem and how it can
positively or negatively impact teaching
and learning experiences.
We collaborated with thousands of
educators, leaders, principals, students
and other stakeholders (sometimes
even parents) to discuss their vision for
teaching, their challenges and concerns
and how best to deal with these using
the physical space.
Our learnings were significant. We
realised that it’s not enough that the
furniture is high-quality, or tested and
designed specifically for educational
use, it needs to be applied correctly.
Education is an ongoing, organic process
that changes throughout a term, a day

and also during a class period.
The needs in the morning when
the class begins are different
from those in the afternoon.
The physical environment (and the
furniture used within) needs to support
transitions between various modes of
learning. Furniture settings need to be
adaptable and flexible, allowing spaces
to quickly and easily transform.
Learning Modes
Learning spaces need to accommodate
different learning modes and teaching
styles to improve learning experiences
and help each student achieve their
full potential.
When designing new, or redesigning
existing learning spaces, there needs
to be a clear understanding of how
the space will be used and the types
of learning that will occur.
We have created an array of flexible and
adaptable furniture settings that can
quickly transition learning spaces from
a series of learning modes into other
groups of learning modes; from a passive
to a more active learning environment
without fuss, anywhere and anytime.
Explore our extensive range of
innovative and reconfigurable settings
that have been developed and designed
with each learning mode in mind.

Collaboration
Engaged learning. It’s not simply about the right
technology or aesthetic, or even about the comfort levels,
that will immediately re-engage the learner. Engaged
learning occurs when different modes of learning are
employed to enhance the learning experience.
Our discussions with educators has revealed eight
primary modes, that when utilised within a learning
environment using the appropriate technology and the
right application settings, will deliver an engaging and
deeper learning experience of lasting consequence.

“Here I work with like-minded students as a team, with a central focus, solving a real problem that we have seen and are passionate to resolve. We have been given tools to help us work strongly and respectfully together.”
The Collaboration learning mode allows students
to work in project teams to resolve real world
problems and challenges. This is a critical learning
mode vital to a blended and modern pedagogical
approach. Students learn to apply and work
through individual insights and other ideas, to
develop improved outcomes. The group works
autonomously building a sense of mastery directed
towards aligned individual and group purposes.
Settings should include tables with chairs (or
‘stand-at’ benches) that can be configured with
a central focus. Writeable group surfaces on
tables and on vertical boards assists students to
work together and build upon each other’s ideas.
Screening or other furniture can create defined
zones for different teams.
Rules of Engagement
The Collaborative space is allowed to be a bit noisy,
with high levels of movement as participants work
together to resolve the challenge before them.
Each student has a voice and team members may
take turns to lead the activity. The collaborative
space works to specific group rules to ensure
each student is heard and can contribute.

“A space to learn about demonstration and communication, and to present my learning.”
The Demonstration learning mode is where
information is shared, concepts explained and
ideas are demonstrated. Stories are told and the
space should form the ‘campfire’ around which the
cohort gather. The area should support whoever the
‘guru of the moment’ is, whether that be student or
teacher. The teacher’s role is to nurture the students’
presentation skills.
The settings should be suitable for medium to large
groups with a central focus point. The presenter
needs somewhere to display work and should have
a sense of purpose. A vertical writeable board helps
to explain concepts and learning. Peers should be
comfortably seated and provided guidance on how
to respond in appropriate ways. Seats with backs
are required for longer presentations.

Rules of Engagement
Here the student presents to peers and to others
what they have learnt, sharing concepts and ideas
that have been explored through group collaboration,
discussion or independent research and reflection.
Students gather around, tell their story and show
their mastery in what they have learnt and their
ability to communicate that learning. Here the
student can give expression to their purpose.
The Demonstration space is a campfire setting where
all students can gather to hear from the ‘guru of
the moment’. Each person can have a direct visual
connection to the presenter.

“A space to consider ideas more deeply and develop my communication skills with peers; I have autonomy.”
The Discussion learning mode is an integral element
of the learning space where students will spend an
increasing amount of time. This space encourages
peer to peer learning, ideation and higher cognitive
thinking. Real life skills, such as problem solving
and project management are cultivated here, and an
opportunity for less confident students to voice an
opinion and add value to the group is established.

Settings should be relaxed, flexible and comfortable
to allow discussion and group work. Intelligent
furniture shapes and heights are required to diminish
hierarchy of space - there must be no ‘head of the
table’. Visual and acoustic accommodations like
writeable surfaces and booth screening should
be accessible for both ideation and presentation.
16 | Sebel16 | Sebel Discussion | 17
Rules of Engagement
The Discussion space allows students to share their
individual understanding of a topic or concept. Since
a leadership role is not designated, each student
can voice their own ideas in a respectful manner
and be respected by their peers. The Discussion
space invites a variety of opinions. Notepaper is a
good tool to use, to ensure that any challenged idea
is focused toward the issue and not the person; to
assist in the development of this valuable process,
provide guiding questions that students can use
with each other.
Each student is different. From time to time, a
student may need to separate from the group
discussion to reflect upon the issue, while at other
times a senior learner may assist the discussion by
adding guidance (guided learning) or directing the
discussion towards a goal (collaboration).

“I like to use my hands to develop ideas, create models using tools and scribble my ideas and thoughts as they come to me. Sometimes I work in groups and other times I work alone.”
Experiential
Rules of Engagement
The Experiential ‘Create-a-Space’ is a
place for every type of creative activity;
poetry, science, technology, engineering
and maths. Deeper learning and highly
dynamic and active engagement is
driven by personal artistic and creative
pursuits. Here, the student explores
ideas related to their sense of purpose;
things they have observed and feel
connected to, wanting to be explored
and resolved.

The Experiential learning mode is a tactile,
project driven, student-centred active learning
approach, focusing on critical thinking and
problem solving; all of which relate directly to
the real world. Its exploratory and experimental
basis is important for motor kinaesthetic and
motor mechanic ways of learning. The ideal settings use stand-at tables with
writeable surfaces, trolleys with a range of tub
sizes for all sorts of hands-on activities. Stools
may be desired by some students, whilst floor
cushions help some students remain in a space
longer and with greater focus. Small group
settings using both soft and hard seating with
tiered potential allows the space to move from
one learning mode to another; but always with
a ‘hands-on’ capability. A display or presentation
area should also be considered.

“A space to receive direction and instruction; to enable me to develop autonomy, mastery and my sense of purpose.”
The Explicit learning mode is a more traditional
and direct modality, led by the instructor with
delivery of knowledge and information to both
small and large groups. This mode of learning
does not generally invite debate, but encourages
this through other structured modes.
Settings must ensure that the teacher is clearly
visible and must be easily heard by the audience.
Tiered settings work well, with low and standard
seating as well as stand-at points so that
students can express postural choice. Every seat
must be the best seat in the house.

Rules of Engagement
The Explicit learning space is a structured learning
mode where instruction is given to the student by an
expert. Students need to be able to clearly see and
hear the expert and any displays of a presentation.
Students must be able to use devices or paper
for note-taking and have a choice of comfortable
postural positions.

“A space to reflect on my learning, on my ideas and the ideas of others. I welcome personal feedback, getting closer to mastering the learning, and considering my unique sense of values and purpose.”
The Feedback and Reflection mode of learning creates
a space for individuals or small groups to separate
from peers to consider ideas more deeply and
challenge concepts expressed within previous
learning modes. Here a teacher may provide
valuable personal feedback to assist the student
with concept mastery and their individual purpose.
The settings should feature flexible and mobile
solutions suitable for individual and small group
work. Settings with a postural choice for students
with some desk, stool and lounge height solutions.
Cave areas with visual/acoustic provisions
should be available.

Consideration
Rules of Engagement
The Feedback and Reflection space is relaxed and
quiet, separated from peers with less direct contact,
enabling students to ‘get into their own head’, think
more deeply, and reflect on different ideas and
concepts received in other modes. Here the student
can consider their own mastery and purpose.
Question boards that help students dig deeper into
ideas are helpful, with a quiet, calm and safe setting.

“An expert is working closely with us to help us understand the ideas and concepts presented. At times, when I have mastered the concepts, I can be the expert to my peers.”
The Guided learning mode is closely connected
to discussion and collaborative small group work;
and can occur at any time. The facilitator or lead
learner joins the group to quietly interrupt thought
and enable students to think more deeply about
the concept and ideas being considered.
Ideal settings include small groups of comfortable
furnishings, which are flexible. Writeable surfaces
are helpful for the expert to demonstrate ideas fully.
The teacher should be sitting alongside students
with a horizontal line of sight.

Coach
Rules of Engagement
The students and teacher can maintain a relaxed
disposition, talking through ideas and concepts in
a comfortable setting. A place to scribble is helpful
to convey ideas and to guide the student. At other
times, a student may assist the discussion by adding
guidance (guided learning) or directing the discussion
towards a goal (collaboration).

“A space for me to get into my own space and resolve challenging ideas, concepts and problems. I have mastery over my ideas.”
The Independent learning mode is a space that
invites the individual to separate from the cohort
and encourages the student to drill down further
into an issue or thought process. It is a self-
directed learning space where the student
can determine the pace at which they learn.
Settings should include single seat settings
in a quiet place. Soft or firm seating where
the student can work alone. The settings
also need to be flexible should the individuals
come together as a small group.

Rules of Engagement
The Independent space is for the individual to work
quietly on their own. The student may or may not
want to maintain some sort of connection with the
rest of the cohort. It may be in a corner or near a
window to assist with ideation.
For some students, the Independent learning space
resembles a cave; a space for the overwhelmed
student to disconnect, realign ideas and thoughts,
and to reconnect when ready. For others, it may
resemble a ‘look-out’ where the student can get
‘lost’ in their own thoughts and ideas, all the while
thinking more deeply to resolve problems.
