STATE GOVERNMENT SHOWS
SUPPORT FOR CABLE CAR Last year, the Mount Wellington
Cableway Company (MWCC) applied
for its controversial cable car proposal
for Mt Wellington to be declared a Project of State Significance (POSS).
The Coordinator-General has assessed
the proposal as being a “viable
business proposition”, but has not recommended that the project be
declared a POSS. To date, a
significant, preliminary legal hurdle
for the proposal has been obtaining landowner consent from the Hobart
City Council. Without that consent, a
development application cannot be

lodged. On the 25th February 2017,
Minister Matthew Groom announced
that the Tasmanian Government
intends to compulsorily acquire the land on kunyani/Mt Wellington
required for the project, and to
introduce legislation to allow the
proposal to proceed to assessment. The draft laws to effect
the acquisition will be released for
public comment in coming months.
The Minister also stated that the State Government would not be providing
financial support for this project. The
Association will write to Minister
Groom, and the Hobart City Council for clarification on the matter of any
compulsory acquisition of land in the
Mountain Park.

A SOUTH HOBART NEWSLETTER against the Hobart City Council & developer, Stefan Giameos, relating
to a 24 unit development on the
former Blundestone’s Tannery site
situated between Weld and Wynyard Streets and the Hobart Rivulet. The
Tribunal commented that the draft
conditions are substantially in order,
but, before directing the issue of a permit, it wishes to hear from the
parties about the terms of the draft
conditions, and any additional
conditions which might be considered desirable by a party to the Appeal. It
will not entertain a condition reducing
the number of units, as suggested by
the Appellants, but the terms of conditions relating to issues, such as
the construction phase, removal of
parking to deal with sight distance
deficiencies, and parking restrictions are important matters. Sufficiently
important that the Tribunal affords
the parties seven (7) days to make a
submission about conditions, with a right of reply to those submissions to
be exercised within 7 days thereafter.

BUS STOP REMOVALS Does anyone know the whereabouts
of a missing bus stop on the corner of
D’Arcy and Davey Streets? There
does not appear to have been any public discussion about a possible
removal of the stop. Maybe METRO
knows where it’s gone! The stop was
relatively close to the Anglesea stop, and METRO may, no doubt, plead
safety and visibility at the D'Arcy
Street roundabout. Still, more
inconvenience to the public; fewer reasons to catch a bus!
FLAMES OF FEAR There is no doubt that Black Tuesday had a significant impact on Tasmania
and its community. A new book,
Flames of Fear has been released. It
is not just a book on the ‘67 fires, but the history of bushfires in Tasmania.
Its author, Tasmanian identity, Roger
McNeice OAM, is well-qualified to
author Flames of Fear having being involved with fire fighting since
1968. [RRP $75.]

STOP PRESS HCC SECURES RIVULET
LAND
As this Newsletter goes to print, the
Association has just been informed
that the Hobart City Council has successfully agreed to the terms of
purchase for 18 McKellar Street,
South Hobart, the former home of
Murray Noble, who was killed in a house fire. The SHPA (Inc.), in
association with Vaucluse Gardens
Residents’ Group, has, for some
time, been urging the HCC to acquire this land to enable the
Hobart Rivulet Linear Park’s
completion. It is the Council’s
intention, once title has been received, to formally declare the
parcel of land Public Land for the
purpose of the Park. The Director,
Parks & City Amenity, Glenn Doyle, commented that ...“this is a
fantastic outcome; one which the
City and the local community has
been keen to see happen for some time”. This Association expresses
its sincere thanks to the Hobart City
Council for its farsighted actions in
purchasing the property. An especial thanks to Glenn Doyle for his
efforts on the community’s behalf.
