Bravo.

“Je Suis Charlie”

International Holocaust Remembrance Day

On January 27th, our JPPS Grade 6 classes visited the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre. The trip was just one of the many activities in which the students participated with their teachers and classmates to remember and learn about World War Ⅱ, the losses, the heroes and the survivors of the Holocaust.

In conjunction with International Holocaust Rememberance Day, a moving article was written about David Moskovic and his sister Edith. David is a rela-tive of two JPPS students, and accompanied them during the annual JPPS Ho-locaust Memorial ceremonies. The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills, from Kindergarten through sixth grade. They are designed as short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and reading skills.

DIBELS are comprised of seven measures which function as indicators of phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, accuracy and fluency with connected text, reading comprehension and vocabulary. DIBELS was designed for use in identifying children who experience difficulty with the acquisition of basic early literacy skills, in order to provide early support and prevent the occurrence of reading difficulties later on. For more information, please visit: https://dibels.org/dibels.html

All About Jean Beliveau

Tilly Khazzam’s Grade 3 classes prepared a mini-project on Jean Beliveau. They drew pictures of him and described his character. The students learned quite a lot about this famous hockey player, who was a sports giant.

All About The Eggs

JPPS’ 6B class proudly displayed their egg project earlier this year. Both Grade 6 classes were tasked with decorating their own egg. Afterwards, the students worked together on a joint class egg. This assignment was based on the book Habeytsa Shehitchapsa (“The Egg Who Dressed Herself”).

JPPS Grade 3 students visited the MADA Centre as part of a unit in their ERC program entitled “L’entraide.” The students helped prepare many packages for families in need. What a meaningful experience!

The students at JPPS received a visit from Hadar Epstein, Education Emissary of the Jewish National Fund (JNF). She spoke to each class about development and infrastructure in the land of Israel. It was incredibly eye-opening for many of the students. Visit the JNF website: http://site.jnf.ca/main/

JPPS Grade 6 Holocaust Child Victim Research Project

Each year, students in Sheila Witt’s Grade 6 Yiddish class are given the name of a child who perished in the Holocaust with whom they have been matched according to birth date or Hebrew name. Using the Yad Vashem website, www.vashem.org, the students research information about their child victim. From this information, the students then trace back other members of the family, and retrieve information about them. Upon completion, the pages of all child victims are put into an album. This project is done in the hope that these children will always be remembered.

Our JPPS students had a great time at the 2015 Zimria, held at Congregation Shaar Hashomayim on Wednesday, March 18th. JPPS students joined students from other Jewish day schools during this annual Festival of Montreal Jewish Day School choirs. With songs by Shlomo Carlebach serving as the theme, our students sang beautifully and really engaged the crowd! Big thanks to our JPPS Music Director Elena Khitrin, the Bronfman Jewish Education Centre staff, the Association of Jewish Day Schools, the As-sociation of Professional Educational Leaders, Congregation Shaar Hashomayim, JPPS Principal and Zimra 2015 Co-Presidents Marnie Stein and Karen Elkeslassy.
