WORKSHEET Expt. No. 1 Group No. Date: January 30, 2012 Name: Caryl Ambrocio Section: C37B Groupmates: Nina Francia Kristel Parungao A SILLY POLYMER Objective(s): 1. Describe results (steps 1-4): Initially, the Elmer’s glue and the borax solution were liquid, but when mixed together, they were formed into solid. 2. Height of the rebound (step 5): 130 cm 3. Observation (step 6) When stretched slowly, the silly putty gets longer. When it was compressed back into a ball, it was firmer and harder to knead. 4. Observation (step 8) When stretched quickly, the silly putty breaks. When it was compressed back into a ball, it was almost the same as before when it was stretched quickly. 5. Observation (step 9-10) When placed on a regular newsprint paper, the silly putty flattened on its own. After removing the newsprint, some of its color and the excess liquid were found on the newsprint. 6. Height of the rebound (cold silly putty, step 11-12): 80 cm

A SILLY POLYMER

Objective(s):

1. Describe results (steps 1-4):Initially, the Elmer’s glue and the borax solution were liquid, but when mixed together,

they were formed into solid.

2. Height of the rebound (step 5): 130 cm

3. Observation (step 6)When stretched slowly, the silly putty gets longer. When it was compressed back into a

ball, it was firmer and harder to knead.

4. Observation (step 8)When stretched quickly, the silly putty breaks. When it was compressed back into a ball,

it was almost the same as before when it was stretched quickly.

5. Observation (step 9-10)When placed on a regular newsprint paper, the silly putty flattened on its own. After

removing the newsprint, some of its color and the excess liquid were found on the newsprint.

6. Height of the rebound (cold silly putty, step 11-12): 80 cm

Answers to Questions: (use a separate sheet if necessary)1. How do the physical properties of the glue-water mixture change as a result of

adding sodium borate?The liquid type of the glue-water mixture should jell and become more viscous as cross-

linking occurs.

2. What would be the effect of increasing the concentration of sodium borate in the mixture?The material would be more rigid and harder to knead.

3. In this experiment, how did you measure the elasticity of the polymer you prepared?By how far the silly putty can be stretched without breaking.
