Once again, the Maison Théâtre, L’ Arrière Scène - centre dramatique pour l’enfance et la jeunesse en Montérégie, the Centre de diffusion de théâtre jeunesse Les Gros Becs and Les Coups de Théâtre, Festival international des arts jeune public, are joining forces to present the second edition of the FOCUS Québec event on November 19, 20 and 21, 2014 in Montreal, in association with the Conférence Internationale des arts de la scène (CINARS).
FOCUS Québec is a showcase promoting “made in Quebec” theatre for young audiences. It is an opportunity for theatre and festival professionals (presenters and programmers) from here and elsewhere to discover, over a 3-day period, a selection of 8 plays from Quebec theatre companies that reflect the rich variety of this milieu. The productions programmed were chosen by the artistic directors of the 4 presenters partnering this event. A get-together for the TYA community, this showcase is being presented during the Festival Les Coups de Théâtre and the CINARS arts conference, and is thus a great opportunity to meet and network with TYA artists, producers and programmers from Quebec and abroad.

et Hansel by Le Carrousel, compagnie de théâtre (presented in French, script available in English and Spanish), Scenes from a Tree by the company Des mots d’la dynamite (Le spectacle de l’arbre, presented in English) and Un monde qui s’efface by Théâtre Bluff (presented in French, English version also available).
Two other plays, part of the Festival Les Coups de Théâtre and presented at FOCUS Québec, will also be featured: Dans ma maison de papier, j’ai des poèmes sur le feu by Les Deux Mondes, and Papoul by Théâtre Bouches Décousues.

Warm and cozy in her cocoon, she dreams. Lulled in the midst of a tranquil dream, she knows and loves the warmth of her eiderdown. When she awakes she discovers her five senses, her body in the surrounding space. Who am I? Suddenly, the Other beckons to her. What does he want? One step at a time, she finds the courage to step outside, her nose nipped by frost. Thus she sets off, heading down the road to discover the world.

“EVERY CHILD IS A FUTURE OLD PERSON, THEY JUST DON’T KNOW IT YET.”
A young girl is giving us a tour of her imaginary house. The light switches off and then on again… and there she is, a reclusive old woman in a home that suddenly seems very small. Just then a mysterious stranger appears at the door and tells her she is dying. How is that possible? Just yesterday she was a child, and indeed, she is still wearing the same shoes. She accepts that she is going to die, but not before giving the shoes back to the young girl who once wore them.

Amélie is eleven years old. To cope with the absence of her father she refuses to talk, plunging instead into the fascinating world of aviation. At bedtime she pins photos of Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindberg and Leonardo da Vinci onto the bulletin board above her bed. By telling us the grand story of the history of aviation as well as the story of her father, Amélie is able to overcome her grief at his death and discovers a new passion for butterflies.

WHEN KIDNEY STONES BECOME PRECIOUS GEMS
Fred Gravel invites the audience to the unveiling of his art installation created from objects evoking his 10 years of life. Before our eyes he is once again Fred the Terror, the poor child who spent his days searching the gravel in his yard for precious stones. He relives his friendship with Agate, who likes to think she’s Marilyn Monroe, and his connection to his sick mother. Punctuated by moments of dance, the piece shows how Fred’s imagination has eased his burdens and nourished the artist that he has become.

When Hansel arrives, it upsets the balance of Gretel’s life completely, for her little brother has turned every-thing upside down. A MOVING TALE OF FRIENDSHIP STRONGER THAN DEATH
Ali, a young Iraqi in his twenties, is invited to an international symposium of pigeon breeders. As he prepares his presentation he is tormented by memories of the American occupation of his country. One disturbing image in particular stands out, that of his best friend Samir, who died in combat. Ali tries to get on with his life, but the departure of his friend without so much as a goodbye continues to haunt him. Indeed, the war continues to affect something that is very private and personal. But if the young man could have a word with his dead friend, true friendship could triumph.

At the initiative of the Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles in Paris and in close collaboration with the Théâtres Unis Enfance Jeunesse (TUEJ, Quebec), Scènes d’enfance et d’ailleurs (France) and the Chambre des Théâtres pour l’Enfance et la Jeunesse (CTEJ, Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles), a two-day symposium was held last December for some thirty participants, artists and TYA professionals from these three French-speaking com-munities to focus on the following projects underway :
• Establishing a “Professional Theatre for young Audiences” policy in Quebec
• Drafting a manifesto toward an artistic and cultural policy for live performances for young audiences in France
• A report on the state of TYA venues by the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles in Belgium
The purpose of these discussions was to determine what, beyond our specific contexts, we have in common. Points of agreement were identified, and participants then discussed various approaches and difficulties, and possible future actions.
Almost one year later, TUEJ and the Maison Théâtre are taking up the torch and are inviting TYA stakeholders to share the progress made in these areas by the representatives of these three French-speaking communities.

A letter from Daddy, from Grandma, a letter from a sweetheart, letters from friends and neighbours. Funny letters, letters that are choking with emotion, letters that protest or that simply remember. Dozens of letters, but none for Élena, who has not disappeared, who still remembers.

The show is inspired by testimonials from young people with intimate knowledge of the experience of immi-gration, and will be created as part of the international collaborative project Boomerang – Traces of Property and Hope, which involves six different companies: DynamO Théâtre and Presentation House Theatre from Canada, Teatro O Bando from Portugal, Teatro Elsinor from Italy and Pilot Theatre from the UK, plus the Australian Theatre for Young People.
DynamO Théâtre will work in close collaboration with Teatro O Bando and an exchange of directors will take place. Nicolas Brites from Portugal will direct a solo performed by Yves Simard of DynamO Théâtre, while Jacqueline Gosselin will direct the O Bando show in Palmela. Six co-productions will thus be created by twinning companies over a two-year period. The project will culminate in Sydney, Australia in May 2016 with the presentation of a show combining the work of all six companies.

The three of them have never met before, but all received an invitation from Ogo to travel. They show up for the appointment, but he isn’t there. Waiting for him initially seems far too long and tedious, but soon becomes a pretext for play and discovery. Playing with the fabrics and boxes they find in the waiting room, they plunge right in, telling stories and embarking on journeys and eventually enjoying themselves so much that they decide to come back tomorrow… to wait for Ogo again!

For the past 30 seasons, the MAISON THÉÂTRE has been presenting to tod-dlers, children and adolescents a selection of some of the most significant works of theatre from here and abroad. As a centre for presenting plays and community outreach activities, it provides a large audience from diverse social and cultural backgrounds with access to theatre. An association of 27 theatre companies, the Maison Théâtre constitutes a national artistic forum that makes a dynamic contribution to the growth and development of theatre for young audiences.
For the past 38 years and under the artistic direction of Serge Marois, L’ ARRIÈRE SCÈNE has been presenting a wide range of diverse activities to bring young people into contact with the-
atre. As the Centre dramatique pour l’enfance et la jeunesse en Montérégie, it creates new plays, presents works by other TYA companies, and promotes arts education and theatre training. L’Arrière Scène also sup-ports up-and-coming TYA artists and companies, offering residencies for young companies and emerging playwrights.
The only presenter in eastern Quebec specialized in theatre for young audiences, THÉÂTRE JEUNESSE LES GROS BECS proposes productions aimed at tod-dlers, children and teenagers. School groups and families appreciate the quality of the performances presented in a professional venue with an intimate ambi-ence. Les Gros Becs also participates in promoting theatre for young audiences
by supporting the presentation of new works and by welcoming companies with artistic residencies where they can refine and polish new works and meet their public.
A confluence of diverse influences that nourish artistic works aimed at young audiences, the FESTIVAL LES COUPS DE THÉÂTRE reflects the vitality and diversity of a wide range of creative approaches to be found in the performing arts directed at young spectators. Founded in 1990 under the artistic direction of Rémi Boucher, the festival is a biannual event that is unparalleled in Canada.
The CINARS Biennale has made a name for itself as an indispensible multi-disciplinary event, in which one can develop real international touring opportu-nities, build solid relationships with professionals from all over the world, as well as sharpen one’s professional skill-set and knowledge base. The event gath-ers around 1,300 participants from 40 countries and presents over 150 shows throughout the week.
