MESSAGE FROM EDDY CAMPBELL, UNB PRESIDENT

Discovery and innovation are what drive UNB forward. This work is sparked not just by our world-class researchers and institutes, but by our students, who we encourage to be bold in their pursuit of a solution. UNB’s Engineering Design Symposium dem-onstrates that we prepare students for future success by encouraging them to explore the world outside of the lecture hall. It is in these situations that critical thinking, innovation and resource-fulness come to life, and great things happen. During their fourth year of studies, engineering students group together to develop projects through the capstone design course, and with the guidance of industry mentors and professors,

they deliver clients with fully realized ideas and solutions. The Engineering Design Symposium gives students the opportunity to showcase their innovative projects to the greater community. In the five years since the symposium’s inception, some of these projects have gone on to become successful businesses, and witnessing students harness their ingenuity, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit has been a highlight I look forward to every spring. Experiential learning is at the core of the ingenuity you are witnessing here today. Students from a variety of disciplines are seizing the opportunity to transform their education by applying the skills they have learned in the classroom to finding smart solutions to everyday problems for organizations and communities alike. UNB has earned the title of Canada’s most entrepreneurial university from StartUp Canada by teaching our students the transformative power of entrepreneurial thinking; these innovations are part of our commitment to creating opportunities for ourselves and others. Congratulations to the Faculty of Engineering for organizing yet another successful symposium. Your hard work and commitment to our students is evident. As well, thank you to those who took the time to guide our students as they turned their ideas into action, including industry mentors and community organizers. Most importantly, I would like to acknowledge the students whose dedication and innovation are on display here today. I recognize the work required to bring you to this point and I wish you the greatest success in the future. Sincerely,

H.E.A. (Eddy) CampbellPresident & Vice-Chancellor | University of New Brunswick

MESSAGE FROM CHRIS DIDUCH, UNB DEAN OF ENGINEERING

On behalf of the UNB Faculty of Engineering —where Canada’s first engineering program was founded in 1854—I’m delighted to welcome all delegates and guests to the fourth annual UNB Engineering Design Symposium.

The symposium is one of UNB’s premier annual events where final-year engineering students from our seven engineering programs showcase their capstone design projects and prototypes to the community. The symposium provides the public with an opportunity to see, firsthand, the innovative design solutions of our students and to discover new and emerging technologies.

The symposium encompasses a broad range of engineering disciplines, including: chemical

engineering, civil engineering, electrical & computer engineering, geological engineering, geodesy & geomatics engineering, mechanical engineering and software engineering.

The symposium is a celebration, marking the culmination of four years of study by our graduating students. More than half of the projects are sponsored by external clients where students are mentored by practicing engineers. This approach to learning goes beyond the classroom and provides students with experiential learning opportunities that develop and enhance the skills and competencies valued in the workplace.

The Symposium would not be possible without those who have worked tirelessly planning and organizing the event. I want to thank Dr. Michel Couturier and the instructors of our disciplinary capstone design courses who provide leadership and direction for our student’s experience here at UNB.

I want to acknowledge our industrial partners who have sponsored projects as well as the sponsorships provided by the friends of UNB Engineering. I also want to acknowledge the many students and staff who have provided logistic support —especially Heather Jones and Theresa Murray in the Dean’s Office.

Finally, congratulations to the students who are part of the capstone design experience for your ingenuity, perseverance and hard work. I wish all of you a successful final year and both a rewarding and fulfilling career following graduation.

Chris Diduch, Ph.D., P.Eng.Dean of Engineering | University of New Brunswick
