scripture
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you.
I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I
am, there ye may be also. 4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
— St. John 14: 1-4

Bishop Leroy Johnson,
Presiding, Iowa Jurisdictional Prelate
Pastor, former Missions President, former Expeditor, Superintendent, former President of Black Ministerial Alliance, Vice Presi-dent of African American Leadership Coalition, father, husband, and friend Richard L. Daye was born in Durham, North Carolina on October 1, 1929 and raised in the small town of Hillsborough. A longstanding member of Dixon Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church For 21 years. Pastor Daye graduated from Hillsborough Negro High School and went on to Elizabeth City State College. He studied at Moody Bible Institute and went on to attend Allied Mechanical School of Tool and Dye. He also studied at the William Roberts School of the Bible for 2 years. In 1952, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served 3 years as a 3rd Class Petty Officer.
Superintendent R.L. Daye was saved and filled with the Holy Ghost in San Diego, California on February 24th, 1952. He will never forget his “spiritual mother”, Mother Ardella Portis who led him to Christ. While in Des Moines, Supt. R.L. Daye became the first African-American to host a six day Gospel Train Show on cable television and the first African-American to become the head of the Parks and Recreation Paint Department for the City of Des Moines, Iowa. He was also a disc jockey on KUCB 89.3 for many years.
He was married to his late wife Mother Carol A. Daye for 45 years and fathered four children. He married First Lady District Missionary Deborah K. Terry-Daye of Dallas, Texas in 2003. Pastor and Mother Daye recently celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary. Previous to marrying his late wife Mother Carol, he was engaged to marry “Sweet Juanita”... If you have never heard the story ask a family or church member and you are sure to get a chuckle.
Superintendent Daye will never forget the teachings and leadership of his former jurisdictional prelates: Bishop Samuel Crouch, Bishop Van Goodlow, Bishop Wyoming Wells, Bishop Louis Henry Ford, and Bishop Hurley Bassett Sr. He is also thankful to God for Pastor Willy B. Matthews Sr., Mother Curtsina Matthews, and Mother Patricia Hayes for their mentorship. He owes a debt of gratitude to Pastor A. Brown and Bishop James Markam for laying the foundation and allowing him to preach at a young age and serve as the Vice President of the Central Illinois Evangelism Department at St. James COGIC.
Superintendent R.L. Daye relocated to Des Moines, IA from Illinois in 1972 after being appointed by Presiding Bishop L.H. Ford. He was the pastor of East 17th Street COGIC for 3 years before establishing New Friendship Church of God in Christ, where he pastored for 43 years. Under his leadership, many men and women of God went on to serve in various capacities within the Church of God in Christ.
Superintendent Daye loved doing mission work, evangelizing, and sharing jokes to make others smile. His mission work included the community food pantry at New Friendship, remodeling homes for single young mothers, and ministering to prisoners at the Newton Correctional Facility. He also served as an ambassador to the Des Moines Police Department, hosted Toys–4–Tots for over 10 years, and shared Bar-B-que with neighbors as an opportunity to witness. His combined passion for Bar-B-Que and evangelism opened the doors for many to hear the word of God. Former Member Tammy Brown was saved though his anointed Bar-B-Que ministry.
He participated in the Drake Neighborhood farmers market for 16 years and was the owner and operator of Grandpa Daye ’s Open Bar-B-Que Pit, which reached many hungry local and out of town guests during the week of Drake Relays. He had a passion for reading, cooking, and spending time in his library studying the word of God. He loved to watch sports with family, friends, and especially his wife Deborah. His favorite football team was the Baltimore Ravens. His favorite television stations were The Word Channel, ESPN, and Food Network.
Loved ones who proceeded him in death are Father, John Wesley Daye; Mother, Annie Daye (Liscomb); Sister, Arlene Daye; Brothers, John Willis Daye, Harold Daye; Late Wife, Carol Daye, and Brother-in-Law Clarence Mayo.
He leaves to cherish his wife, Deborah K. Terry-Daye, Daughter—Brenda “Googie” Daye-Wilson (Louisiana), Sons—Brian “Bubba” Daye, Broderick “Boo” Daye, and Breon “Dawg” Daye. He also leaves to cherish his Sister—Corine Mayo (North Caroli-na), sister-in-law—Isabell Bumpus Daye (North Carolina), Daughter-in-Law—Laurie Daye, Grandkids—Sheena Williams, Dominic Wilson, Darrius Wilson, Sharena (James) Ford, Bryce Wilson, Tiffany Hunter, Leslie Woodard, Kalyssa Russell, Amari Daye, Braxton Hunter; Nieces - Deborah (Jeff) Jeffrey, Phyllis Daye-Drew, Wanda (Samuel) Adams; nephews—Barron Mayo, Harold (Lee) Daye Jr, and a host of Great-Grandchildren.
Superintendent Richard Lee Daye applied for a position with a company called Heaven. The president of the company is Jesus. When a position became vacant, Jesus told one of His angels to pull his resume. Jesus He Himself came down to Superintendent Richard Lee Daye’s bedside on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 and interviewed him. After the interview, Jesus Himself told Superintendent Richard Lee Daye that he was qualified and offered him the position in Heaven. Jesus told him of Heaven’s complete fringe benefit package: 100% Joy, 100% Peace and 100% Happiness… all of this with no limitation. This great company even supplies it’s employees with their own uniforms: a long exquisite white robe, a radiant crown, golden unblemished slippers, and angelic wings to transport him about the beautiful city. Superintendent Richard Lee Daye accepted the position in Heaven and is situated presumably some-where in the Heavenly Choir. Superintendent Richard Lee Daye has no more pain. He has no need of medications or doctor visits. Superintendent Daye will never again have to consider bad news or endure Disappointments. When I realized Superintendent Daye had a successful interview with Jesus, there was comfort in knowing that his job would be effortless. I believe that Superintendent Richard Lee Daye will pass his probationary period and his foremost duty will be to sing songs of praise and adoration to the Heavenly Father for all eternity. As we celebrate Superintendent Richard Lee Daye’s new assignment, I beg each of you to examine your resumes and keep them current, as we all have an appointed time for our final interview with the Almighty God. I am asking you to observe the way you are living. Is your life holy, acceptable and pleasing to God? If you reply no, then now is the time to revise your resume… make the necessary adjustments while you are yet of sound mind. The decision is our own, whether to embrace or deny our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Superintendent Richard Lee Daye had his Interview and accepted the position in Heaven.
Congratulations Superintendent Richard Lee Daye

Wear your robe and wear it proudly man of God … We love you.” — Deacon Wilson and Mother Valerie Hudson, friends of Supt. Daye “Pastor Daye was "one of a kind". I will always remember you as a giant among men. Your love and service to people is immeasurable and your commitment to building God's Kingdom relentless. Your continued thirst for knowledge knew no lim-its and your progressive thinking always impressed and encouraged me. I will never forget you being one of the most atten-tive students in the Senior Computer class learning how to maneuver the internet and mouse will always bring a smile to my face. The foundation and lessons you taught me as I entered my Christian life will forever be with me. Words cannot express how much I appreciate what you've instilled in me. You have fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith. Henceforth there was a crown of righteousness which the Lord has rewarded unto you. I love you Pastor Daye.” —Sister Rosa McRoy, New Friendship member for 12 years “I will never forget when Pastor would call me about anything the first words I would hear were “God Bless you my dear”, then he would proceed with what he wanted to say.“ — Sister Alesha Hawkins, New Friendship Member for 14 years “Supt. Daye was a Father, teacher and mentor to me. When I received the Lord in my life, God sent me to Supt. Daye for my training and teaching. Throughout my 32 years of membership, he promoted me to Bible Band teacher, Sunday school Teach-er, and finally as the Church Mother where I served for 14 years. He was a holy man of God and full of faith. His relationship with God shaped his life and the entire community. He loved to give and will be missed by everyone.” —Mother Burkett, New Friendship Member for 32 years
“Pastor, you were always there to help us when we fall We just want to thank you for answering the Master’s call
To thank you for caring, when things can seem so bad. To thank you for your humor that lifts us up when sad,
To thank you for the prayers, that you prayed for us each day. You’re more concerned with others needs than the trouble you faced.
You have always seemed to know the problems we are facing and the ways we need to grow.
We must also thank the Lord For his Pastor strong in Christ.
His example and his humbleness inspire all our lives. A pastor that relies on God, through happy times and tears.
You were such a special blessing And we thank God for giving you to us as our Pastor”
— Love from your Pastor Aide Hazel and children—New Friendship Member for over 30 years
