First Reading Isaiah 45:1-7

Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations

before him and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him--and the gates shall not be closed:

I will go before you and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut

through the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places,

so that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. For the sake

of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I surname you, though you do

not know me. I am the Lord, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. I arm you, though you

do not know me, so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no

one besides me; I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness, I make weal

and create woe; I the Lord do all these things.

Lector The Word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

Psalm 96: 1-13 (said responsively by half-verse)

1 Sing to the LORD a new song; *

sing to the Lord, all the whole earth.

2 Sing to the LORD and bless his Name; *

proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day.

3 Declare his glory among the nations *

and his wonders among all peoples.

4 For great is the LORD and greatly to be praised; *

he is more to be feared than all gods.

5 As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; *

but it is the LORD who made the heavens.

6 Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! *

Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary!

7 Ascribe to the LORD, you families of the peoples; *

ascribe to the LORD honor and power.

3

8 Ascribe to the LORD the honor due his Name; *

bring offerings and come into his courts.

9 Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness; *

let the whole earth tremble before him.

10 Tell it out among the nations: "The LORD is King! *

he has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity."

11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea thunder and all that is in it; *

let the field be joyful and all that is therein.

12 Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy before the LORD when he comes, *

when he comes to judge the earth.

13 He will judge the world with righteousness *

and the peoples with his truth.

Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus

Christ: Grace to you and peace. We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our

prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and

steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers and sisters beloved by God,

that he has chosen you, because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in

power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of persons we

proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite

of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit, so that you became an

example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For the word of the Lord has sounded forth

from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has become known,

so that we have no need to speak about it. For the people of those regions report about us what kind

of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true

God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead-- Jesus, who rescues us

from the wrath that is coming.

Gospel Reading Matthew 22:15-22

Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

All Glory to you, Lord Christ.

The Pharisees went and plotted to entrap Jesus in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him,

along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God

in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality.

Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?” But Jesus, aware of

their malice, said, “Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for

the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose

title?” They answered, “The emperor’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to the emperor the

things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they heard this, they were

amazed; and they left him and went away.

Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord.

All Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Celebrant says

Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power

of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever.

Amen.

The Clergy, Baptized and, those presented, and all sponsors make their way to the Font

Thanksgiving over the Water

The Celebrant blesses the water, first saying

The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of

creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of

promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the

Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into

everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his

death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in

joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing

them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water

Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are

cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To

him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The Baptism

Robert, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your

servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised him to the new life of grace. Sustain him, O Lord, in

your Holy Spirit. Give him an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a

spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen.

8

Then the Bishop or Priest places a hand on the person’s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross

using Chrism and saying

Robert, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever. Amen.

Or this action may be done immediately after the administration of the water and before the preceding prayer.

Let us welcome the newly baptized.

Celebrant and People

We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his

resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood.

The Clergy, those others presented to the Bishop, and all sponsors will now make their way to the altar rail.

For Confirmation

The Bishop lays hands upon each one and says

Strengthen, O Lord, your servant N. with your Holy Spirit; empower him for your service; and

sustain him all the days of his life. Amen.

or this

Defend, O Lord, your servant N. with your heavenly grace, that he may continue yours for ever, and

daily increase in your Holy Spirit more and more, until he comes to your everlasting kingdom. Amen.

For Reception

N., we recognize you as a member of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church, and we receive you

into the fellowship of this Communion. God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless, preserve, and

keep you. Amen.

For Reaffirmation

N., may the Holy Spirit, who has begun a good work in you, direct and uphold you in the service of

Christ and his kingdom. Amen.

Then the Bishop says

Almighty and everliving God, let your fatherly hand ever be over these your servants; let your Holy

Spirit ever be with them; and so lead them in the knowledge and obedience of your Word, that they

may serve you in this life, and dwell with you in the life to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

9

The Bishop says to the congregation

Let us now pray for these persons who have renewed their commitment to Christ.

Silence may be kept.

Then the Bishop says

Almighty God, we thank you that by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ you have

overcome sin and brought us to yourself, and that by the sealing of your Holy Spirit you have bound

us to your service. Renew in these your servants the covenant you made with them at their Baptism.

Send them forth in the power of that Spirit to perform the service you set before them; through Jesus

Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for

ever. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE TABLE

The Offertory Anthem “Sing a new song” Roland E. Martin

The St. Christopher’s Choir Text: Psalm 98 (paraphrase)

All standing, if able

The Offertory Response “Praise God from whom all blessings flow” Old 100th, arr. Vaughan Williams

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise him, all creatures here below;

Praise him above, ye heavenly host;

Praise, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father

Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. A Proper Preface is added

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of

heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus “Holy, holy, holy” BH S-129

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

The people stand or kneel.

Then the Celebrant continues

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen

into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and

eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God

and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your

will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

11

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when

he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my

Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said,

“Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for

the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving.

Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy

Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and

unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve

you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of

your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the

Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as

in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against

us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the

glory are yours, now and for ever Amen

The Breaking of the Bread The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.

A period of silence is kept.

REFLECTION

We were a small group of kids …. those who went all 8 years at Holy Trinity School. Over those years,

in the 70s and early 80s, some students would come and go. Their parents would be transferred and

they’d move, or new kids would join our class from other schools or other cities. It’s been 35 years

since I left that darn school, with the blue and white uniforms, yet I can still remember my teachers

and classmates. The small group of 8-years, well I can just start ticking off their names. Antz, Denise,

Stephanie, Karen, Barry, Scott, Susan, and Michelle, among others.

Over the years, of course, have kept in touch with a few. Went to high school with some, college with

a couple. After ordination, even went to Karen’s funeral. And I just got news of Michelle. I found our

first-grade class picture, and there she was, with what looked like an art smock of a dress, big red

ribbon, blonde bangs, and a few missing teeth. She was always one of my favorite pals. We were

constant, usually in the same class each year, never best friends, but always there, always around.

I read her obituary this week, fifteen months after she died of cancer, leaving behind a husband, three

children, two sisters, a brother, and her mom and dad. Michelle was one of those friends, that, after 30

years or so, I pondered, “Wonder what she’s up to.”

The summer after 7th grade, I spent a lot of time at my friend, Dan’s, house. He had a large pool and

lived close to Michelle and Denise. We’d ride our ten-speeds to their houses and hang out. I put that

route on Google Maps the other day and couldn’t believe my parents let me ride that far, especially

with astronomical hills, and couldn’t believe I didn’t pass out from exhaustion.

At the beginning of eighth grade, it was kind of expected that the boys would ask the girls if they

wanted to “go together.” Sometimes, these relationships lasted a week, but usually were over by the

end of the school day. I remember grabbing our kitchen phone, with the 50-foot spiral cord, and going

down the stairs toward the basement after closing the door so my brother wouldn’t bug me. I called

Michelle to ask if she would be my girlfriend. She said she’d think about it. The next morning, thought

about it and, with her gravelly nasal twang, she said no. After five minutes of awkwardness, we were

back to normal sitting across from each other in math class.

Not to sound like the end of the movie, “Stand By Me,” but I never really saw Michelle much after 8th-

grade graduation. I knew she went to the big girls’ Catholic high school, with a number of my

classmates, as I started at the boys’ school down the street. Her younger brother worked an internship

with my brother-in-law a few years back in Lexington, KY and I heard she was doing alright living up

in Ohio. I always wished her well, and thought fondly of her and our time together as classmates and

pals. Life truly is short, my friends. Love while you can.
