Advent Lessons and Carols

You are invited to use the quiet time before the service to focus your body, mind and spirit in prayer. As silence is kept, the candles will be lighted.

Please stand as you are able when the tower bell tolls.

*The Congregation is invited to stand as you are able.

*Matin Responsory adapted from Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c. 1526-1594)

I look from afar: and lo, I see the power of God coming, and a cloud covering the whole earth. Go ye out to meet him and say: Tell us, art thou he that should come to reign over the people Israel?

High and low, rich and poor, one with another, Go ye out to meet him and say: Hear, O thou Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like sheep,

Tell us, art thou he that should come? Stir up thy strength, O Lord, and come to reign over thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. I look from afar: and lo, I see the power of God coming, and a cloud cov’ring the whole earth.

Go ye out to meet him and say: Tell us, art thou he that should come to reign over thy people Israel?

One: Beloved in Christ, in this season of Advent, let it be our care and delight to prepare ourselves to hear again the message of the Angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem, to see the Babe lying in a manger. Let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God, the glorious Redemption brought us by God’s holy Child. Let us look forward to the yearly remembrance of his birth with hymns and songs of praise.

But first, let us pray for the needs of the whole world; for peace and goodwill over all the earth; for the mission and unity of the Church for which he died, and especially in this country and within this city. And because this of all things would rejoice his heart, let us at this time remember in his name the poor and the helpless; the hungry and the oppressed; the sick and those who mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; and all those who know not the Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love. Lastly, let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in our Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one.

One: The Almighty God bless us with his grace and may Christ Jesus give us the joys of everlasting life. Amen.

The candles are extinguished and all are seated.

Carol Prepare the way, O Zion… Anders Öhrwall (1932-2012) Prepare the way, O Zion; your Christ is drawing near!

Let every hill and valley a level way appear. Greet One who comes in glory, foretold in sacred story. Oh, blest is Christ that came in God’s most holy name.

He brings God’s rule, O Zion; He comes from heaven above. His rule is peace and freedom, and justice, truth, and love.

Lift high your praise resounding, for grace and joy abounding. Oh, blest is Christ that came in God’s most holy name.

Fling wide your gates, O Zion; your Savior’s rule embrace. His tidings of salvation proclaim in every place.

All lands will bow before him, their voices will adore him. Oh, blest is Christ that came in God’s most holy name.

The Third Lesson Isaiah 7:10-15

God promises that a child shall be conceived who will be known as “God with us.” Read by Amy Crawford

Carol Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus Richard Webster (b. circa 1951) Text: Charles Wesley

Come, thou long-expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee. Israel's strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art:

clear desire of ev'ry nation, joy of ev'ry longing heart. Born thy people to deliver, born a child, and yet a king, born to reign in us for ever, now thy gracious kingdom bring. By thine own eternal Spirit

rule in all our hearts alone; by thine all sufficient merit raise us to thy glorious throne. Alleluia!

The Fourth Lesson Luke 1:26-38 The angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Read by Christina Heyde

Carol Gabriel’s Message Basque Carol Setting by Philip Orem (b. 1959)

The angel Gabriel from heaven came, his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame; “All hail,” said he, “thou lowly maiden Mary, most highly favored lady.” Gloria! “For know a blessed Mother you will be, all generations praise and honor thee,

your Son will be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, most highly favored lady.” Gloria! Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head, “To me be as it pleaseth God,” she said,

“my soul will praise and magnify His holy Name.” Most highly favored lady.” Gloria! Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn,

And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say “Most highly favored lady.” Gloria!

The Fifth Lesson Matthew 1: 18-23 St. Matthew tells of the coming birth of the Saviour..

Read by John Heyde

Carol Tomorrow shall be my dancing day… John Gardner (1917-2011) Tomorrow shall be my dancing day: I would my true love did so chance to see the legend of my play, to call

my true love to my dance: Sing O my love; this have I done for my true love. Then was I born of a virgin pure, of her I took fleshly substance; thus was I knit to man’s nature, to call my

true love to my dance: Sing O my love; this have I done for my true love. In a manger laid and wrapped I was, so very poor this was my chance, betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass, to

call my true love to my dance: Sing O my love; this have I done for my true love. Then afterwards baptized I was: the Holy Ghost on me did glance, my Father's voice heard from above, to call

my true love to my dance: Sing O my love; this have I done for my true love.

Passing of the Peace

The Holy Eucharist The Offering Carol

Carol E’en so, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come Paul Manz (1919-2009)

Peace be to you and grace from him who freed us from our sins, who loved us all and shed his blood that we might saved be.

Sing holy, holy to our Lord, the Lord, Almighty God. Who was and is and is to come; Sing holy, holy, Lord! Rejoice in heaven, all ye that dwell therein, rejoice on earth, ye saints below,

for Christ is coming, is coming soon! E'en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come, and night shall be no more; they need no light nor lamp nor sun, for Christ will be their All!

The Great Thanksgiving Please Stand

One: The Lord be with you All: And also with you One: Lift up your hearts All: We lift them to the Lord One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God All: It is right to give God thanks and praise

One: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Presentation

One: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made

known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world.

In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In

him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat:

This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father, All: We remember his death,

We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with St. Mary and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

While the gifts of bread and wine are elevated, the congregation prays together.

All: By him and with him and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

One: As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

The Lord’s Prayer Spoken

All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

Communion Carol

The wise may bring their learning… Philip Orem The wise may bring their learning, the rich may bring their wealth, and some may bring their

greatness, and some bring strength and health; we too, would bring our treasures to offer to the King; we have no wealth or learning; what shall we children bring?

We’ll bring Him hearth that love Him; we’ll bring Him thankful praise, and young souls meekly striving to walk in holy ways; and these shall be the treasures we offer to the King,

and these are gifts that even the poorest child may bring. We’ll bring the little duties we have to do each day; we’ll try our best to please Him, at home, at

school, at play; and better are these treasures to offer to our King; than richest gifts without them yet these a child may bring.

Communion Hymn

56 (Blue Hymnal) O come, O come, Emmanuel... Veni, veni Emmanuel Omit Stanza 3

Post Communion Prayer Please stand or kneel as you are able.

One: Let us pray. All: God of Power and Love, by whose grace we are accepted as thy children and

equipped for thy service: We thank thee for thy Presence in the bread and wine now received. May thy companionship fire within us the gifts of thy Holy Spirit and equip us to bring forth the love, joy and peace of thy Spirit in all the places we go; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord. Amen.

THREE ADVENT RESOURCES ~ David recommends three different resources that can be used as a part of your devotions during the season of Advent. The first is a book of Poems for Advent and Christmas assembled by Episcopal theologian William Countryman. The collection is entitled “Run, Shepherds, Run. It has a brief poem and reflection for each day of the four weeks of Advent and the Twelve days of Christmas. The book is available online in a number of places. The second resource is from the Society of St. John the Evangelist (www.ssje.org), an Anglican/Episcopal order of monks in Massachusetts. You can sign up to receive a daily “Advent Word” through the season as well as other resources from their website. The Episcopal Church website also offers a variety of Advent resources online as well as in print. Follow this link: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/page/advent-resources-2014. CHRISTMAS MEMORIALS AND THANK OFFERINGS ~ What a delight it is to enter the church on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning and see the bold and beautiful poinsettias! These are given by parishioners as Memorials for loved ones or as Thank Offerings for God’s many blessings. Again this year you will have two different ways to request Christmas Memorials and Thank Offerings.

If you participated last Christmas, you received a letter with instructions for participating again.

There are request sheets on the tables in the narthex which you can complete and return with your check payable to St. Mary‘s Altar Guild.

You can also make offerings for the Music Fund. Those checks would be payable to St. Mary’s Church with “Music” indicated on the memo line. These requests must be received by December 21, 2014 in order to appear in the Christmas Bulletins.

TODAY’S MUSIC By Kevin McKelvie

Today we are combining a favorite of the season, An Advent Service of Lessons and

Carols with our regular Sunday Eucharist. Lessons and Carols is a long-standing tradition in the Anglican Church and dates back to 1880 when Edward Benson, then Bishop of Truro in Cornwall (later to become the Archbishop of Canterbury) organized a 10 p.m. service on Christmas Eve. According to an article in BBC NEWS (2001), the reason for the service was to keep men out of the pubs!

The first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was at King’s College, Cambridge in 1918 where Dean Eric Milner-White adapted Benson’s service from Truro. This Christmas Eve tradition has been regularly broadcast since 1928 (except for 1930) and in the USA broadcasts have been heard via American Public Radio since 1979, most stations repeating it on Christmas morning.

Lessons and Carols, in a variety of forms, (one of which we present today) has become a staple in many Christian institutions throughout the USA and around the world. It is not uncommon to find Lutherans, Presbyterians, United Methodists and sometimes even Baptist congregations following this time honored format.

One of the main tenets of the service is to begin in darkness and throughout the service moving to various stations or chapels within a large church with the final destination being the high altar (Light) for the final lesson. In smaller churches (like most in this country) the procession leads directly to the chancel area where the choirs and clergy remain for the entire service.

Anders Öhrwall (1932-2012) was a Swedish musician, composer and conductor. Öhrwall was a church musician at Adolf Fredrik Church from 1962-1999 where; in 1964 he founded the Adolf Fredrik Bachkör (Bach Choir). From 1982-1985 he was chief conductor of the Swedish Radio Choir and in the 1990’s he lead the Phoenix Bach Choir in Arizona. Richard Webster (b. circa 1951) is an American church musician, conductor and composer. He is currently Director of Music at Trinity Church, Copley Square in Boston. He is quite well known for his hymn arrangements for brass, percussion and organ which can be heard across the English-speaking world. A graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Webster served from 1974-2003 as organist/choirmaster at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Evanston succeeding his, then teacher Karel Paukert. Webster is also the Music Director of Chicago’s Back Week Festival.

Philip Orem (b. 1959), our Composer-in-Residence since 2007, received bachelor and master’s degrees in piano performance from Northwestern University as well as a diploma in composition and arranging from the Grove School of Music (CA). His compositions and arrangements have been performed and recorded throughout the U.S. and Europe.

He is published by Gentry Publications, Dorn Publications Inc., Pan Press and Brass Chamber Music Press and most recently by G.I.A of Chicago for his choral anthem The Lamb. The Lamb was dedicated to “yours truly” and the Parish Choir of St. Mary’s. Gabrielle’s Message was written last year for Adrienne Grove, who sings it today.

John Gardner (1917-2011) was an English composer born in Manchester and educated at Eagle House, Wellington College and Exeter College, Oxford. During the Second World War, Gardner was a Bandmaster and later a Navigator. After the war he worked as a vocal coach at the Royal Opera House – Covent Garden where Sir John Barbirolli came to know him and his compositions. Through Barbirolli’s help, Gardner had his First Symphony performed and many commissions followed. In 1956 he joined the staff of the Royal Academy of Music where he would teach for nearly 30 years. Later, he took up the Director of Music position at St. Paul’s Girls’ School, following Gustav Holst and Herbert Howells. His carol: Tomorrow shall be my dancing day… is by far his most famous composition and a favorite here at St. Mary’s. Paul Manz (1919-2009) was an American composer of many choral and organ works. Born in Cleveland and educated at Concordia University – River Forest and Northwestern University – Evanston; Manz later obtained a Fulbright grant and studied with Flor Peeters and Helmut Walcha. For many years he served as Cantor of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Minneapolis and at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Chicago; at both institutions he also became Cantor Emeritus. E’en So, Lord Jesus Quickly Come is by far his most famous piece and was composed during a time of great stress for Paul and Ruth Manz. Their then, three year old son, John had developed a rare type of double pneumonia which required hospitalization and painful treatments to lower his temperature. During this time Paul wrote the motif for the piece and Ruth adapted the text from the last chapter of Revelations as a way of expressing their hope and grief. John recovered and became a pastor in the Lutheran Church. Lloyd Webber or William Lloyd Webber (1914-1982) was an English organist and composer. Born in London, his father was by trade a plumber but also a great organ “buff” who spent what little money he had traveling to hear various organs in and around the capital. By age 14 William had already become a well known organist and gave recitals at many important churches and cathedrals throughout Great Britain. He obtained a scholarship to the Royal College of Music and studied with Ralph Vaughan Williams. Because there was another student at the college named William Webber, William continued to use his second middle name Lloyd from then on as part of his name. His compositional roots were firmly embedded in the romanticism composers such as Rachmaninoff, Sibelius and Franck. He taught at the Royal College of Music and in 1964 accepted the Directorship of the London College of Music, where he remained until his death in 1982. In 1942 he married the pianist and violinist Jean Hermione Johnston. Their marriage produced two sons: composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and cellist Julian Lloyd Webber.
