revenue-generating educational services, making slide sets of its collection available to libraries, schools, universities, and the public at cost, producing slide sets of painting and sculpture for educational institutions, and frequently loaning works for use in exhibitions in Canada and elsewhere. More than half of the Art Bank collection is out on rental at any one time.

In view of the most recent figures from the keeper of our cultural statistics - the Culture Sub-Division of Statistics Canada - there is still more to be done in this country for our visual artists. Based on estimates for 3,500 artists, Statistics Canada found that the vast majority of these artists earn less than $5,000 annually from art sales, and almost three-quarters

must hold either full or part-time jobs to make ends meet. Such figures keep the Council aware that - budgets willing

- the vis ual arts need further encouragement from the public as well as

from the private sector. Charles Lussier

REPORT ON RILA Two of the scheduled speakers in the conference session on

"Computers in the Art Library" (Friday, March 23) were Michael Rinehart and Toni Petersen, who were to give a Re

port/Update on recent activities at RILA. Neither of them, un

fortunately, wound up being able to attend the conference, al

though they did send along a brief written report, which indi cated that RILA was soon to join the Lockheed DIALOG sys tem and was preparing an index to volumes 1-5. In view of the traditional close ties between ARLIS and RILA and its over all importance as an art reference tool we thought it ap propriate to ask for a fuller summary of developments now taking place in Williamstown that will affect us all as RILA users.

With four volumes now complete and the fifth edited and in production, it seems appropriate to begin the task of cumulat ing the separate indexes and reviewing indexing policies. It is especially pertinent to do this since a contract is being drawn up for RILA to enter the Lockheed DIALOG system by the end of 1979. Whether different characteristics are required for on-line and manual searching is only one of the questions to be considered as we contemplate possible revision of the RILA indexing format.

The cumulation is being assembled now at the Computer Cen ter of the City University of New York. In its crude form, which is simply the merging of the computer files of each volume's index, it will require some editing before it can be made avail able. Once the editing is completed, it should be a simple mat ter to arrange for a printed version which can be offered to RILA subscribers.

The editing process will undoubtedly generate a number of problems and questions bearing on the eventual format of the RILA index. It will also be an opportunity for a first look at the accumulated subject terms used in the last four years. It is hoped that this process will dovetail with the beginning of

work on the RILA thesaurus of art historical terms. Both users of on-line search services and conventional

printed indexes have long benefited from published thesauri in conducting search strategies in various subject fields. In addi tion, such thesauri carry in-house benefits for indexing staff and for free-lance editors. Once a thesaurus is constructed it

may be put on-line and automatic matching of on-going index
