Evolution Workshop.
On Wednesday 16th August the VCE Biology student attended an
Evolution Workshop at Bairnsdale Secondary College. This involved
analysis of allele frequency for lactose tolerance and examination of
Hominoid evolution. Our student teamed up with students from
Mallacoota P-12 College. Thanks to GTAC for coming all the way out
to Bairnsdale and to Maddi who was our awesome presenter.
Below are photos of the student carrying out electrophoresis
techniques to separate DNA fragments of primitive and modern
humans, as well as examination of half-scale hominoid skulls.
Students can come dressed in their favourite footy team
colours or as their favourite player. Students are to bring
a gold coin donation to raise money for the Cancer
Foundation.
Friday 8th September
Principal’s Page
Bloke Barbeque Friday 1st September. The primary students are writing wonderful pieces for Father’s day, which we celebrate with a barbeque next Friday. Like Mother’s day it is so important to celebrate the central role of carers in the life of children and young adults. Pressures on modern family groups seem to be growing across our society, and families are so central to the lives and well-being of young people. In the South Eastern Region there are over 1500 students in ‘Out of Home Care’ which means they are not living with mothers and fathers or immediate family. This number is set to increase by 200 next year with the intake of prep groups. This would suggest a crisis in our society - so it was great to meet Murray Geddes from the Department’s ‘Lookout Centre’, who explained their approach in building school’s ability to help cater for these students. Later in the year he will run a professional development session with staff to remind us of how trauma can impact on all aspects of young lives. Murray was very impressed by the collect approach he saw by our teachers in educating our students. What’s happening ! It’s been another busy fortnight: VCE Outdoor Ed had a very successful trip to the ski fields as part of their course. Abbey, in grade six, won shot-put at the zone sports in Bairnsdale and will go onto the next level. Yesterday I spent a couple of hours talking with Sueanne Caringbould, the Community Planning Project Officer for the Shire Council. It seems there is excellent thinking about the future of Cann River, as we shift to the major economy being hospitality and tourism, and how the Shire is seeking to help growth in this area. I explained to her that more than a quarter of our students over the last years are new to the local area. This is a cause for great optimism in the town: perhaps as urban pressures rise the popularity of attractive highway towns will continue to grow. Today we have Dr Toni Seiler our speech therapist, in the school as well as Lucy Bowtell, a visiting teacher for the deaf. Last night our literacy team reviewed our NAPLAN data: it was great to see that we had medium and high growth in Reading with our students. NAPLAN is of course only one way we know about student and growth and when we looked closely at what students wrote in text situations, sometimes it did not reflect their level of writing. But it also gave ideas with how to teach for this type of situation. Continual reflection on what is working is what modern teaching is about. The principal forum at Bairnsdale last week confirmed the educational direction we are taking : with the focus on evidenced based teaching practice; assessments, that are used to help change teaching; and shared work on literacy. Have a great fortnight—spring will soon be upon us.

Committee of Management Vacancies
The Committee of Management currently has two vacancies.
We are actively seeking for community members to apply for these important community
positions.
The committee desires to reflect the diversity of this community and therefore we appeal to
the younger generation (18 years and over) in our community, to bring a fresh perspective
to the committee. This is an excellent opportunity for you to gain business management
insight and experience. You may be surprised how valued you would be, and how much
you could bring to the centre!
New members would be given the full support of the current members and would not find it
difficult to contribute.
The Centre is a dynamic and important function of our community and continually strives
to improve.
The Committee of Management meets once a month and usually the meetings are routine
and of short duration but they are important. The Committee monitors the accounts, Policy
and Procedure and is a conduit to the community.
A police check is necessary (which the centre would pay for) and an introductory package
can be obtained from the office.
For further information, feel free to contact Michael O’Brien on 0427 394 269.
Join and share the pride in this excellent centre.
