Chapter 1

Donald always had the best sayings. Little girl,he once told me, hindsight is either the bestteacher youll ever have. Or a total bitch. Which one,well, that depends on you.

Tat was a long time ago.oday, a dogght. I dropped through the clouds,

hot on the tail o this Bandit. Tats how we taggedthe enemy. Didnt matter what it was called, but aslong is it was ring at us, it was a Bandit. Its sleekdesign darted this way and that, juked back and orthand around. I could hear the high scream and the lowscratch o its engines through the viewplate o myStarburst F-55E. My telltales ed me data. Te Banditwas getting tired. His next error was a projectedsixteen seconds away.

My hands hovered over the ring controls as Iplotted the right amount o lead. I red a quick burst.He kept inside my aim, banking low to the right.

My targeting computer gave me a solid tone. Teguns were locked in.

I risked a glance at my A aC Af argetingComputer the independent AI that was basicallyan on-board wingman. Nothing new in the six sky.Not since the last Bandit my A aC had dusted early inthe engagement when the sky was thick with Banditsand riendlies; I cant help but imagine the surprisethat colors every Bandits ace when the back o myery chariot opens up a volley o little, starving suns relentless bastards that only quit when they hit.

We were coming in low over the Old D.C. Zone or Te Odds, as we called it a long-derelict regionthat was barely t to be called a ghetto. It had oncebeen the center o it all, the organ that gave this nationits heartbeat or two-hundred years. Well, i it hadonce been a heart, the organ itsel had been gutted

and the cavity seized by proverbial bacteria, parasites,and viruses.Gypsy res dotted the landscape below. Small

communities, too poor to afford a commodity suchas re, lurked in every spot o shadow between thedomains o those who could.

Te C toggled over its solid tone. I squeezedthe triggers. Both auto-cannons lit a death sentencetoward the Bandit, striking its uselage, its wings,the cockpit, and punctuating itsel with a capitalexplosion.

I angled the stick back. Wed lef the mass oghting in our wake some time ago. Te computer

was not reading anything else within its effectiverange, which was nearly three times what any o mypayload could hit. Even the MAWs (Multiple AttemptWeapon) my little, starving suns didnt have thatkind o range. But with the GlobeSat uplink we could

track a target indenitely; then it was just a matter ogetting a weapon within striking distance.

Sector, Maxyra 1209 requesting GlobeSat overTe Odds and surrounding area, I said into myhelmet com.

Maxyra 1209, the skys clear. Head or Y-block,Grid 9. Maxyra 1222 requesting assistance.

Copy that, Sector. Patch me through.A moment later there was a spuk and the ambient

noise o gunre in my ear. Max 22, Max 09 en route.Whats the sit rep?

echnorrist den, ourth oor o a domestichousing block, said the male voice. Teyre holed upthick, covering all stairwells. Tey lled the elevatorswith explosives, welded them shut, and dropped

them to the basement. Tere are still residents on thefh and sixth oors. We cant helo them out causeechs claim theyve got at least two guys lying on the

detonators, daring us to give them a reason to plunge.Im zeroing your signal. Ill be there in sixty

took a hit. I threw my ghter into a hover-to-retreatstandby, upped the canopy, and leapt to street level,pulling my BMW multi-gun rom stow and lockingin the lethal unction. I hated man-downs...
