Each Sunday in our church as the ushers carry the offering plates to the front of the church for the prayer of dedication, the organist plays and we sing what we call the doxology: “Praise God from whom all blessings flow…” If we are honest, probably, most of us don’t think too much about the words we sing each and every week. We should think about them; they are wonderful words. I understand that The American Association for the Advancement of Atheism sing a different doxology at their meetings. It goes like this: “Blame God for whom all cyclones blow Blame him when rivers overflow Blame him who swirls down house and steeple Who sinks the ships and drowns the people.” That is not the God of the Bible, the God that we worship, and it is certainly not the God who sent his Son to die on the cross on Calvary for the sins of the world. All of us who have been Christians for any time can testify that again and again, in the tough places of life, God’s love reaches out to us, and God’s mercy surrounds us. We, as a church family, can certainly testify to that — for across nearly forty years of this church’s existence we have been aware of the love, mercy, grace and guidance of God. Let us pray more and more that we would have a clearer vision of what God would have us do, what God wants us to be in this community, and that The Congregational Church of Sun City would always bring a smile to the face of God. — your pastor and friend, Brian Anderson Page 1 NEWS OF THE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH OF SUN CITY 18401 N. 99 TH AVENUE SUN CITY, ARIZONA 85373 F EBRUARY 2015 V OLUME 28 I SSUE 2 P ASTOR S M ESSAGE “A Different Doxology”

What is LOVE? Love is our CARE Ministries volunteers caring for those who need a helping hand, those who visited our shut-in members during the holidays, driving those in need of a ride to appointments, cooking a meal, writing a letter, making a phone call or sending a card — thank you!! We are always looking for volunteers.

We are also looking for a new co-chair to work with Bev, as Carol is stepping down for health reasons. Please contact Bev, 975-1091, or call Pastor Brian in the church office.

CARE MINISTRIES PROGRAM LENTEN LIVING Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, [which is] February 18, this year. Christians have observed this season of the church year since the fourth century. It’s traditionally a time of reflection, penitence and spiritual renewal before Easter. During Lent, some Christians give up so meth ing th at hin de rs the ir relationship with God. Others do something extra for their spiritual growth or make a special sacrifice. The key is to make Lent a memorable season of sincere spiritual growth — a time that can set the tone for the rest of the year.

MEN’S CLUB Our next Men ’s Club breakfast meeting is on Tuesday, February 3, at 8:00AM in Alexander Hall. As always, our breakfast and speakers are open to ALL (men and women). It’s a great way to introduce someone new to our church. A brief business meeting will follow our speaker.

The speaker is Clint Hickman, our District 4, Maricopa County Supervisor. He will talk about the duties of a county supervisor and his ideas about the future of the West Valley. Please sign up on the list posted on the Alexander Hall bulletin board and bring (at least) one of your west valley

to hear Clint’s informative message.

Please add your name to the signup sheet on the board in Alexander Hall. — Dick Clauer, Men’s Club Chair

SWEAT SHOP SORORITY It’s the first of a new year and the closet must be cleaned out and decisions made. The air was full of lint and sneezes (mostly me) as materials were shaken out and decisions made as to the best category and use for them. Jewelry was sorted, and foundations for the new Christmas trees cut. In all . . . a busy morning. Three new members have joined our group: Bev Davis, Betty Wright and Vivian Klobuchar Hope the chaos and coffee time was enjoyable for them.

The Annual Valentine Bake Sale will be held on Sunday, February 8, after both worship services. On this date, coffee and tea will be served and you will be able to purchase something to share at a table during fellowship time and/or purchase something to take home. Your help is needed for this fund raiser! Please bring your home baked goods to the church kitchen on Saturday, February 7, between noon and 2PM. Please package, label and decorate your items with a Valentine theme, if possible. The committee will do the pricing. Thank you in advance for all the wonderful cookies, candies, cakes, breads and pies you will contribute. To help price or sell, please contact Joyce Dudley 623-256-6402 and offer your assistance.

A Special Food Drive sponsored by the Men’s Club and the Women’s Fellowship will be held from Sunday, February 1, through Sunday, March 15. We are collecting non-perishable food each Sunday for the Valley View Community Food Bank. These donated food items will be designated to go to families who are homebound or unable to get to the Food Bank. Please bring canned goods (including soups, vegetables and fruits), peanut butter, cereals, boxed meals, canned meat and fish. Thank you for your support. Contact Nelson Droege, 972-3733, or Joyce Dudley,256-6402.

WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP

During the 17th century, an archbishop traveling

through Scotland met theologian Samuel Rutherford but kept his identity secret. Rutherford invited the man to stay with hm. When Mrs. Rutherford gathered the servants on Saturday to prepare for worship the next day, the guest joined in and was asked a basic question: “How many commandments are there?”

When the guest replied “11”, Mrs. Rutherford said, “What a shame it is for you, a man with gray hairs, in a Christian country, not to know how many commandments there are!”

The next morning, Rev. Rutherford went out in the woods to pray and heard his guest doing likewise. When he discovered the archbishop’s identity, Rutherford invited him to preach that morning. The archbishop’s topic? The 11th commandment, based on Jesus’ words in John 13:34 — “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another” (ESV).

COMMANDMENT #11

AHA, I KNEW IT!! The explanation:

Brains of older people are slow because they know so much ...

People do not decline mentally with age, scientists believe; it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains to search through. Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets ‘full up’, so do humans take longer to access information, it has been suggested.

Researchers say this slowing down is not the same as cognitive decline.

The human brain works slower in old age, said Dr. Michael Ramscar, but only because we have stored more information over time. The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more.

Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand there wondering what they came for. It is NOT a memory problem, it is nature's way of making older people do more exercise. SO THERE!!
