Thomas Ulsrud and his Norwegian teammates entertained the crowd

by dancing in their Comfyballs underwear, and they did provide Team Europe with their only point of the evening, but Team Canada continued to roll along and pile up the points at the 2015 World Financial Group Continental Cup, presented by SecurTek Monitoring Solutions.

Ulsrud, third Torger Nergård, second Christoffer Svae and lead

Håvard Vad Petersson, stole three in the second end and cruised to an 8-3 win over Olympic champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

But red-hot Mike McEwen and his Winnipeg crew scored deuces in the second, fourth and fifth ends to beat Niklas Edin of Sweden 7-4 and Val Sweeting of Edmonton continued her strong play with a 7-2 win over Margaretha Sigfridsson of Sweden.

The two points gave Canada seven for the day – to two for Team Europe – and increased its lead to 22-8.

Ulsrud added three points in

the fourth and the game was pretty much over so he and his mates used the fourth-end break to drop the pants a little and dance for the crowd, partly to entertain and partly to promote the underwear.

“We decided to do it before the game. Then we looked out, holy crap, there’s a full house tonight,” Ulsrud said. “Team Europe is not doing too well. We needed something to happen and this is our only gig.”

It is an unavoidable reality of a Continental Cup captaincy that if you juggle your lineup and the team doesn’t perform, you’re a dunce. But if it works? You’re a genius.

That’s the task that faced this year’s captains, six-time Brier and four-time world champion Randy Ferbey for Team Canada, and Scotland’s David Hay, who has been flicking the levers for Team Europe this week at the World Financial Group Continental Cup, presented by SecurTek Monitoring Solutions.

They’re not under the gun alone. They work with a team coach and together they form the brain trust for their respective teams.

Who pushes the correct buttons this week will certainly have a bearing on the final outcome. Like the Ryder Cup of golf, after which this event is patterned, the final outcome is one way a captain is judged. They know that some of the blame could fall on their shoulders if they make the

wrong moves.Rick Lang (the

Canadian national men’s coach) is work-ing with captain Fer-bey this week and says the captain/coach influence in this event isn’t as key as in the Ryder Cup, but it is still significant.

“Oh, yeah, there are areas where we can have an influ-ence,” says Lang. “We of course had to work

with and pick the teams for mixed doubles. That’s really important. We had to find compatible teammates with matching skill sets to play in that. We did that prior to the competition so we had that set to go.”

Lang says he and Ferbey let the players have a big say in the match-ups.

“Randy and I surveyed the teams (before the event) for mixed doubles through emails across the country, looking for feedback. This week we’ll decide on our Sunday matchups together with the players and have team meetings, just like Ryder Cup, and ask who they think should be out there, who they’d like to be against, and go from there.”

But, as he points out, the captain and coach have the final say.Lang has done this at past Continental Cups and says the players are

great to work with, and egos don’t come into play when deciding who to play or who to sit.

“When it comes to Sunday and the mixed games and teams are split up, I think we have to be careful to be sure we have players on teams they want to be on and the matchups they want to have.”

There are always the fans to think about. So don’t be surprised if there are interesting matchups when the skins games are played today.

“We will have some combinations we put out there I think the fans will enjoy,” assures Lang.

Dawn and Mike McEwen (in black).

By AMANDA DUCHEMINSKYThe Morning Cup

Dawn McEwen partnered with her husband Mike at the altar, so she had no trouble hooking up with him on the ice Saturday at the World Financial Group Continental Cup, presented by SecurTek Monitoring Solutions.

It was a unique chance for the two of them to play together in a major event.

Dawn was initially hesitant to curl with her husband but said she couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

“I thought that you don’t get very many chances to do this type of thing,” said Dawn, who won Olympic gold last year playing lead for the Jennifer Jones team from Winnipeg. “So I thought it would be fun.”

Their pairing on the ice provided a new aspect to the game for both of them.

Dawn thought they worked well together as a team.

“We know how to feed off of each other,”

she said.Mike admitted they were a close unit

on the ice, just as they are off it.“We know each other’s moods,” he

said. “I know if she misses a shot that she thinks she should make, she’ll be sulking.”

It was clear they enjoyed playing together, and were able to joke about it later, even though they lost their doubles match, 7-6, to Europe’s Anna Sloan and Christoffer Svae.

“If it’s too quiet, I know things aren’t going too well,” Mike grinned.

But a quick on-ice broom butt pat from Mike was enough to cheer up his wife after a miss.

The McEwens definitely have different on-ice styles. Mike says he’s “a little bit more of a talker out there,” while Dawn “is silently determined.”

Yet, both are equally competitive. Dawn says “it’s a pretty good tie” when comparing their drive to win.

This team’s a real team

“I think I bring a little bit of intensity to our team. A little cheering and energy.

— Jill Officer

Cheerleading justpart of Officer’s‘job’ description By DAVE KOMOSKYMorning Cup Editor

She comes to work every day, not with a briefcase, suit or other

traditional trappings of business, but with curling shoes and brush.

Jill Officer makes no bones about it: curling at her level is very much like a job.

“It certainly is a job and a career for me,” says the 39-year-old second on Jennifer Jones’s Olympic gold-medal winning team from the St. Vital Club in Winnipeg. “I have a part-time job, I do a lot of things in the community and I’m a mom as well, but aside from that, curling is my focus.”

The job description certainly includes a considerable workload. Watch Officer in action this week at the World Financial Group Continental Cup, presented by SecurTek Monitoring Solutions, and it’s clear she approaches her position as if

it were written down as a job order. Up and down the ice she works the brush, letting her skip Jones and third Kaitlyn Lawes do most of the high-level thinking at the far end of the ice.

When it comes time to throw, she does it with clinical efficiency, smiling only when her shot borders on spectacular. Then it’s back to the brush, ready to sweep with lead Dawn McEwen.

That’s not to say she works in silence.

“I feel that I’m a bit of a leader on the front end,” she says. “I’m more likely to initiate conversation. I think I bring a little bit of intensity to our team. A little cheering and energy. I like to play that role.”

Officer has developed into one of the best seconds in the game, but it didn’t come easy. She’s had to work at it.

“The game has changed,” she says. “There are a lot more requirements for the seconds to make those

finesse shots . . . to be able to throw a high, hard one and then get in the hack to throw a draw. That’s something I’ve had to learn how to do. A few years ago drawing was not my strength.”

Officer has been steadfast in her belief that while Jones plays the leading role on the team, handling the media and pressure as one of the world’s top women curlers,

every other member brings her own star power to the team, on and off the ice.

“I wouldn’t say we work in the background,” she says. “Jennifer has more demands on her than anybody on the team and does get pulled in a lot of directions. She handles it so well. I don’t know how she does it.

Jill Officer is one of the top seconds in the game.

No pot of gold

The endorsement deals are just about ready to roll in.

Anytime soon, Brad Jacobs is expected to sign an endorsement deal with Nike, which is putting out a new line of curling shoes. And with his beach-boy good looks, Pepsi wants him to promote its drink to a whole new generation of curlers.

Then there’s the book deal . . . a guest shot on Letterman . . . a possible movie role . . . and . . .

Yeah, like in his dreams. As a sports superstar — and Jacobs

is certainly that in curling — the 29-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., can only imagine what his life would be like if he could jam a basketball through a hoop or deposit a rubberize disk in the back of the net, big-league style.

But he can’t do that. All he can do at the world-class level is curl . . . very, very well. And for that, the gold-medal winner at last year’s Winter Olympics has received more or less what every other Canadian athlete has received after a great global victory at the Games: some great memories, a gold medal, and some recognition.

But heaps of cash? Forget it.Canadian pro athletes Sidney

Crosby, Steve Nash and Russell Martin count their athletic rewards in dollar signs. Jacobs and his teammates have to be content with warm fuzzies. Like all those people who jammed the airport when they

arrived home with their gold medals. Or the guy at the grocery store checkout line who wants to shake their hands and get an autograph.

Still, Jacobs and his teammates —

third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden — can be excused for thinking there may have been some sort of payoff after their glorious gold-medal victory, one of

10 won by Canada at the Winter Olympics.

Brad Jacobs turned his Roar of the Rings gold into Olympic gold in Sochi, Russia.

Brad Jacobs says his Olympic gold-medal win has paid off.

“I think we all had expectations,” says Jacobs. “We may have thought at first we won the lottery. It didn’t turn out that way. I don’t think it ever turns out that way.”

He could have asked Brad Gushue about that. Gushue won curling gold for Canada in Turin, Italy, in 2006, and found out there was no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Is Jacobs disappointed, or disillusioned?

“Disappointed? No, not at all,” he says. “Absolutely it (winning the gold medal) has paid off. Maybe not the same as it may have (for athletes) in the United States, and some of the other countries, but we’ve been pretty fortunate and pretty blessed.”

Jacobs says the gold medal may not have paid off in money and mega endorsements, but it has opened up some opportunities and things you don’t get to experience unless you win a gold medal. He has, for instance, picked up more sponsorships, including Pinty’s.

“It’s (winning gold) probably not as life-changing as people may think,” he says, “but it is life-changing in the sense that you’re a lot more recognized and you get a lot more support from Canadians everywhere. It isn’t as financially life-changing as some sports are, but it’s still pretty nice.”

Jacobs says he doesn’t dwell on what he did or didn’t get after the Olympics. What matters is the accomplishment.

“What we set out to do was be the best team in the world, and make our dreams come true,” he says. “We accomplished that last year. That’s what it’s all about. Whatever comes after, it is what it is.”

His victory remains an accomplishment to savour for the rest of his life.

At times, the quiet, unassuming skip has to pinch himself. Was it real? Was that really him on the podium with his teammates in Sochi, Russia in February after defeating Great Britain’s David Murdoch in the gold-medal final?

For assurance, all he needs to do is play a recording of his week in Russia. What he will see is a team completely on top of its game, headed by a totally focused skip.

There is Jacobs making an angle-raise takeout. There is Jacobs drawing the nail-hole. There is Jacobs making an across-the-house double. And there is Jacobs rolling a rock on its edge to get through the most narrow of ports.

OK, so the last one was made up, but you get the picture. In the recordings is one great shot after the other and enough material to package as the game’s best-ever instruction series.

And if that’s the big reward, along with some recognition, he can live with it.

The news waits for no one. But our Season of Champions newspaper editors are asking our readers to — at least for our print copies.

Alas, we don’t publish on the final day. It’s not that we don’t want to. We do. We’re newspaper people. We want to get the final story.

But with the seats empty in the beautiful Markin MacPhail Centre and the Patch deserted on the post-event Monday, it makes no sense to produce a paper.

So that means tomorrow curling fans who have been reading about the World Financial Group Continental Cup, presented by SecurTek Monitoring Solutions, will have to find the final results elsewhere, beginning on the Canadian Curling Association’s website. You will find everything you need right there at www.curling.ca

Our next print production will be the Heart Chart at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Feb. 14-

22 in Moose Jaw. Hopefully there will be plenty

of our Calgary readers on hand to pick up the first edition, hot off the press. And if not, they can always read our papers online on the CCA website.

But before we go, we want to thank a bunch of people who have helped us get the paper out to you on a brief, but daily basis.

Of course, we’d like to thank the competitors for their time and courtesy. It’s hard to talk to reporters after a tough loss, but these folks do it consistently and without complaint.

We’d also like to thank all the volunteers who worked the media room, our print partners at CentralWeb in Calgary, and to event manager Gord McNabb of the Calgary committee for his help and guidance.

But mostly we’d like to thank you, the readers, for your interest.

See you in Moose Jaw!

That’s all folks!

“But as much as people see Jennifer out there in the community, there certain-ly has been instances for the rest of us to do things out in the community as well. We’ve all had wonderful opportunities to do things, talk to the media and do public speaking. We’ve been fortunate in that way.”

Officer says she’s happy with the po-sition she plays, and wouldn’t have it any

other way.“When this team is done, I’m done,”

she laughs, shrugging off the idea of her skipping her own team some day.

The game, she says, never gets boring.“But like any job or career you need

a break,” she says. “Sometimes it becomes routine. But routine also makes it easier to go out and compete. Routine becomes habit and second-nature and makes it easier to prepare.”

Once prepared, it’s back on the job, ready to play another game in the spot-light as an Olympic gold-medal champi-on.

INSPIRING GREATNESS

Eight and five would be just fine, but eight and four might be a bore.

Curling is basically a 10-end game but here at the Continental Cup teams are playing only eight ends, with a standard four-rock rule. When asked about it John Morris of Calgary, skip of Team Canada at this year’s Tim Hortons Brier, said eight ends is fine but would probably need a five-rock rule.

“Love ’em,” he said about the eight-end games. “Well, if you get down early I don’t love them. But to be honest, the eight-end game, in combination with the five-rock rule (which has been experimented with a few times), keeps everyone happy

because if you get down early in an eight-end game it’s really hard to have a chance to win.

“But the five-rock rule, you know, I didn’t really play it until this year and just from playing and watching it, it’s been really entertaining. If we’re going to go eight ends we might have to go to the five-rock rule in order to keep the interest in the game.”

Keeping up interest isn’t an issue in mixed doubles where eight ends works well. Pairs begin each end with two rocks already in play – behind the button and a centre-line guard – which forces curlers to play aggressively and can drive up the score.

Give me five!

As for the game, Ulsrud said his team got a lucky break early that led to the three.

“One of those games,” he said. “Brad was throwing on a fresh path I guess and ended up light and we got three counters. He’s going to make that shot 95 out of 100 times at least.”

One sheet over McEwen stole two in the fifth and one in the sixth to take

control of his game and get Canada back on the winning track.

“Early booking for Vegas (site of next year’s Continental Cup), Team Ulsrud,” chuckled McEwen. “Not to curl, to perform there.”

McEwen, third B.J. Neufeld, second Matt Wozniak and lead Ben Hebert, forced Edin to take a single in one and three while they got back-to-back deuces.

“We had comfortable control, managed to turn around the hammer in the first end,” added McEwen. “I

made a gross draw for two, the boys swept that perfect and we won the measure as Ulsrud was dancing with his pants down. A matter of two ends the game went from being tight to being over.”

The four-day event wraps up with today’s skins matches, at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. MT, worth 30 points.

Team Canada captain Randy Ferbey and coach Rick Lang, as well as Team Europe captain David Hay and coach Peja Lindholm, made their picks Saturday for today’s skins games.

MORNING CUP STAFF

Alberta continues to be the go-to province for the Canadian Curling Association when it chooses its host venues for Season of Champions events.

The CCA announced last month that Canada’s elite curling teams will converge on Revolution Place in Grande Prairie, Alta., for two major championships during the 2015-16 season.

The 2015 Home Hardware Canada Cup (Dec. 2-6), along with the 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts (Feb. 20-28) have been awarded to Grande Prairie, and will be staged at the 3,000-seat Revolution Arena.

“Grande Prairie put in a convincing bid to host these events, and we’re thrilled to make a long-awaited return to that city,” said Greg Stremlaw, Chief Executive Officer of the CCA. “The 2006 Ford World Women’s Championship in Grande Prairie still holds the attendance record for that event, and we expect the fans and volunteers to make the 2015 Home Hardware Canada Cup and 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts equally successful.”

The 2006 Ford Worlds drew 60,791 to

watch Sweden’s Anette Norberg capture gold, beating Debbie McCormick of the U.S. in the final, with Canada’s Kelly Scott winning the bronze medal.

The decision to go back to Alberta only supports Stremlaw’s strong belief that Alberta is a hotbed of curling.

“Alberta not only supports curling, but the economy is strong,” he said. “Alberta has a significant amount of worthy locations in a very diverse province.”

The announcement of Grand Prairie means that five Season of Champions events will be held in Alberta over two years. The CCA is going full-bore into the province this season with three events — the Alberta Triple Crown — in two cities. The Home Hardware Canada Cup, presented by Meridian Manufacturing, has already been staged in Camrose, and this week Calgary is hosting the World Financial Group Continental Cup at the Markin MacPhail Centre. The city will also host the Tim Hortons Brier in March.

The 2016 Scotties will mark the 35th consecutive year of Kruger Products’ title sponsorship of the Canadian women’s curling championship, which is among the longest-running partnerships in Canadian sports.

Revolution Place, with a capacity of approximately 2,800 for curling, was built to host the 1995 Canada Winter Games. It is the home arena to the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Grande Prairie Storm,

and in addition to the 2006 Ford Worlds, it also hosted the 2004 Royal Bank Cup Canadian Junior A Hockey Championship as well as a portion of the Edmonton Oilers’ 2006 training camp.

Alberta a go-to curling destination

Revolution Place will be a rockin’ venue for curling next season.
