IT’S PASSION IN EVERYTHING YOU DOExcellence is a philosophy—a way of life. It’s about perseverance, and never giving up. Failing, picking yourself up, and trying again. Excellence is holding yourself to a higher standard and acknowledging when you don’t meet those standards. It’s taking your weaknesses and turning them into your greatest strengths. At the Jones Graduate School of Business, passion drives excellence.

Honor Code: Rice has a high trust culture that obligates individuals to preserve our legacy of honor. Developing principled leaders starts on day one. Academic integrity in the form of the Rice Honor Code is presented as soon as a student begins the Rice MBA program. Violations of the Rice Honor Code are handled by the Rice Honor Council which handles any abuses reported. “On my honor, I have neither given nor received any unauthorized aid on this exam or paper.” – Student Signature

Rice MBA Full-Time ProgramRice University’s Master of Business Administration was designed to help students be more effective in today’s ever-changing business world. The full-time curriculum was developed with three goals in mind: (1) maintain the traditional academic rigor and preparation that is synonymous with the Rice MBA, (2) create a delivery format that maximizes the student learning experience, and (3) provide students with the flexibility to customize the curriculum to meet their professional needs. As such, the curriculum is intended to allow students to build a strong general management foundation in the first year, while providing the flexibility to tailor the curriculum to their professional needs in the second year of the program. Second year customization allows students to declare up to two concentrations or take a more generalist approach and select from the over 40+ electives offered in the second year of the program.

Rice MBA – ME Program The Jones School offers a two-year joint degree option with the MBA and Master of Engineering program, combining a solid business foundation with a number of non-thesis engineering choices. Rice University’s George R. Brown School of Engineering is one of the nation’s premier engineering schools.

Rice MBA – MS Program The Jones School offers a three-year joint degree option with the MBA and Professional Science Master’s program at Rice’s Wiess School of Natural Sciences, which offers MS degrees in Environmental Analysis and Decision Making, Subsurface Geoscience, and Nanoscale Physics. Students complete courses in one of the three degrees along with management coursework for their MBA.

Rice MBA – Baylor MD Program The Jones School and Baylor College of Medicine offer a five-year MBA/MD program to answer the growing need for professional leaders in high-quality healthcare institutions, biotechnology-focused industries, health insurance/managed health care firms, and pharmaceutical and medical supply and equipment companies.

Student Mission Statement: Along with the Rice Honor Code, the student mission statement was created to set the long-term direction of the student body and to carry that culture of integrity beyond graduation.

As aspiring leaders, we join the Jones School to develop ourselves through academic pursuit and contributions to our community. To demonstrate our commitment, we will:

• Act with integrity,

• Value the differences in individuals, and

• Strive for excellence.

In accordance with this commitment, we hold ourselves accountable to be prepared, respect the wisdom of our faculty and peers, and practice intellectual curiosity. We will also hold our instructors accountable to help us develop the skills and intuition necessary to distinguish Jones School graduates as superlative leaders.

Upon graduation, we will demonstrate principled leadership in our communities and uphold strong ethical values while guarding the reputation of our peers, school, and profession.

Articulating problems. Exploring alternatives. Reaching solutions. These are the foundations of academic excellence. The Jones Graduate School’s challenging curriculum provides its students with not only basic business disciplines but also specialized electives that allow you to further integrate your knowledge and career objectives.

RICE MBA BUSINESS CONCENTRATIONS

The goal of a concentration is to provide students with the ability to demonstrate functional, professional, or industry expertise in a particular area of interest within a general management program. Concentrations represent some of the areas of strength, excellence and depth within the curriculum. Students may earn a maximum of two concentrations and the completion of each concentration will be certified on the student’s transcript.

AccountingThe concentration in accounting reinforces the program’s fundamental concepts and adds insight into accounting processes and principles. Completion of the concentration enhances a student’s ability to analyze and interpret accounting reports while emphasizing the importance of accounting information to internal and external decision makers.

Energy A concentration in energy develops students’ perspectives and improves their understanding of management issues in the industry. The concentration explores the management and global economic environment. The coursework also delves into geopolitics by requiring courses from other Rice University departments.

Entrepreneurship The concentration in entrepreneurship presents a framework for success. The required courses provide insight into starting a business, as well as buying and selling a company. Students may choose courses in specific entrepreneurial topics in which they are interested.

FinanceA finance concentration provides a deep foundation in financial management principles and a chance for further specialization. Students will complete the primary finance electives of the MBA program and a course in financial statement analysis as well as additional specialized courses.

Global Business The ability to take full advantage of a global economy can be the difference between success and failure. Sourcing, staffing, financing, developing ideas, and reaching customers, all require managers to have a global perspective. The concentration draws upon coursework from several functional areas as well as courses taken from other Rice University departments.

Health Care The concentration in health care focuses on the best ways to understand, organize and manage aspects of the health care system and the rapidly changing issues driving the industry. Required courses address how management principles are interpreted and applied in the health care industry and in different health care settings — such as pharmaceutical, hospital, and large and small practices.

Management ConsultingManagement consultants must be able to identify both the problem and the solution and, in many cases, implement the corrective action. It is an ideal path for students that enjoy solving problems and who have strong analytical skills. The curriculum covers an array of issues related to business strategy and the process of analyzing business problems from various angles to develop preliminary solutions.

Mastering Creativity and Innovation Creativity and innovation are essential skills across all industries and benefit students regardless of their career path. Students in this concentration gain a theoretical understanding of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial behaviors while strengthening managerial skills to nurture and promote creativity in their employees.

Marketing The marketing concentration is ideal for those planning to pursue a career in brand/product management, marketing research and analytics, pricing, new products, marketing communications and direct marketing, or promotion.

Real Estate ***NEW***The Rice MBA concentration in real estate provides an educational structure of essential information, from both world-renowned Rice faculty and successful real estate practitioners and entrepreneurs. Students receive the foundation on which they can build or enhance their careers in courses ranging from real estate finance and real estate development to the application of marketing and research strategies.

Action Learning Project During your first year’s Action Learning Project (ALP), you’ll join a team of four to six students in consulting for a dynamic host company over a ten-week period, including five intensive weeks on-site. With guidance from faculty and a corporate liaison, you’ll study the scope of improvements needed and examine the company’s processes, then provide written recommendations and present your findings to senior management.

An ALP helps you build excellent teamwork, interpersonal and communications skills; strengthens your critical thinking and analysis abilities; deepens your understanding of core course concepts and tools; and helps develop problem definition and project scoping skills. This fully integrated, multidisciplinary approach also provides practical experience in another critical real-world skill: the ability to implement change.

Your education does not stop when you leave the classroom. At the Jones Graduate School, Rice MBA students have the chance to try on different hats and get a feel for an industry they may or may not have considered before. The Action Learning Project (ALP), student-run M.A. Wright Fund, summer internship and Intensive Learning Experience (ILE) all emphasize the value of experiential learning.

HOW WILL YOU LEARN? REAL-TIME EDUCATION

I worked with Chloe Dao, the Project Runway Winner and owner/designer of LOT 8 Boutique in Houston, to revitalize and streamline her business. While the project was a lot of hard work it was the perfect way to culminate the first year class experience and put my MBA skills to work in a valuable way. It was also a great experience for my team to provide business solutions to a local Houston small business.Mallory Engler, Rice MBA Class of 2012

The Action Learning Project committee looks for a wide variety of companies and project types. Project focuses have included brand image, financial modeling, new product development, product launch and strategy identification among many others. Recent Action Learning Project companies have included:

Chevron

City of Houston

Doctor’s Hospital

Exterran

FMC Technologies

Halliburton

Houston Zoo

Bill ArnoldProfessor in the Practice of Energy Management

As a senior executive in energy, government and banking, Bill engaged at the highest levels of government in the U.S. and abroad to provide geopolitical insights, develop business strategies and advance multi-billion dollar projects. “What most impressed me about the Jones School were the students. They bring extraordinary experience into the classroom. I hope to give them the perspective of other stakeholders, to help them understand the complex condition of meeting environmental, social and economic requirements, and to recognize the critical dimensions to energy and sustainability.”

M.A. Wright FundDespite a volatile and challenging stock market, the Jones Graduate School of Business’ student-run M.A. Wright Fund continues to generate impressive returns. Comprising students selected through a rigorous application and interview process, the Fund provides them with a hands-on opportunity to learn, develop, and apply effective stock analysis and portfolio management risk and return techniques. This student-run fund was established in 1995 with a generous memorial grant by the M.A. Wright family. The fund’s excess earnings are used to provide endowed scholarships.

The Wright Fund’s home base for investment analysis and performance monitoring is the El Paso Corporation Finance Center located in the Jones School, providing students access to the center’s state-of-the-art research resources and analytical software. Students get hands-on experience using extensive data sources and powerful analytical tools such as Bloomberg, Reuters, @Risk, Research Insight, Crystal Ball, and AFG’s proprietary analytical tools.

Summer InternshipAll students are expected to secure an internship during the summer following their first year in the program. These provide students with real-world experience in their area of interest or in an industry they wish to move into, and many are offered full-time positions upon completing the internship. Internships also raise the profile of the school in the corporate community while simultaneously providing students with enhanced work experiences.

Intensive Learning Experience (ILE)The Intensive Learning Experiences (ILEs) are one- or two-day workshops designed to put you in the driver’s seat. Through simulations, business case analysis, and interactive sessions, you and your team will gain experience in organizational management, crisis management, negotiation, and other key leadership skills.

Held after the first term in each semester, the ILEs provide an opportunity for you to apply what you have learned to a real-world scenario.

I chose to go on the international trip to India to learn more about an unfamiliar culture. The trip proved a balanced opportunity to learn about India’s business environment while allowing us to visit the main tourist attractions and to share the experience with classmates. I not only explored the Taj Mahal — a once in a lifetime opportunity — but also experienced the thriving Indian economy firsthand by visiting local companies’ headquarters.Carlos Parra, Rice MBA Class of 2012

Extending beyond the classroom into the global arena, an education at Rice offers international trips and study abroad programs where students have the chance to experience business in an international environment or take classes at an international school. Our commitment to learning in global environments is our mission in action.

HOW WILL YOU LEARN? EDUCATION IN GLOBAL COMMUNITIES

International TripsEvery year students from the Rice MBA programs may choose to embark on several international trips. Arranged during winter and spring breaks, the different options do not conflict with class schedules.

In keeping with the Jones School’s mission of developing principled, innovative thought leaders in global communities, trips to China, Mexico, Latin America, South America and India remain strategic destinations.

Itineraries include visits to corporate offices, U.S. embassies, and plant sites, as well as alumni and prospective student events. For example, on the China trip, students take mini-courses at Rice’s partner universities, Tongji University and Tsinghua University.

Students make business contacts and learn firsthand about the economic situations in the host country. Past trips have included Mexico City, Guadalajara, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Beijing, Shanghai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Dubai. Next year’s destinations will include Mumbai, Hong Kong, and San Jose, Costa Rica.

A CLASS BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Tech Commercialization in Developing Countries is a unique global health technology commercialization class taught by Marc Epstein, distinguished research professor of management. The class offers students an opportunity to apply their business school knowledge, learn about business in developing countries, contribute to the alleviation of poverty, and have a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa.

Using a commerce model and the education and skills of second-year MBAs, students develop commercialization plans for four technologies created by Rice engineering undergraduates.

The students work in teams and travel during fall break to truly understand the challenges of finding effective ways to manufacture, distribute, and market products. Trip destinations have included Rwanda and Liberia.

Traveling to Rwanda was an enlightening and educational experience that gave me a new perspective on multiple levels. Not only did I learn about the culture and setting up a new business in a developing market, but more importantly, I learned about myself. The opportunity to gain practical experience while doing something socially responsible and personally fulfilling was truly unique and invaluable. Woodrow Scott, Rice MBA Class of 2011 Federal IT Strategy Consultant, Deloitte Consulting

My decision to study abroad at Costa Rica’s Instituto Centroamericano de Administración de Empresas (INCAE) – a partner of the Jones School and one of the top business schools in Latin America – helped me enrich my professional network while learning about a different culture. I was able to explore everything Costa Rica has to offer, including the beaches, volcanoes, and forests, but the most enriching part of this experience was to work on teams with individuals from all around the world.Simone Ghirlanda, Rice MBA Class of 2011 Investment Banking Associate, JPMorgan

Study Abroad Exchange Programs Rice MBA students are able to study abroad for a semester through our partnership with Instituto Centroamericano de Administración de Empresas (INCAE) in Costa Rica or the Escuela de Graduados en Administración y Dirección de Empresas (EGADE) business school at Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM). Students who wish to study at EGADE can do so at any of their 33 campuses in Mexico.

Students are able to participate in an exchange program during their second year.

The exchange programs are one term (six weeks) in length and students typically choose six to nine credits of elective course work. The credits transfer, although grades do not.

Al Napier discusses strategy in The New Enterprise And Business Plan Development course.

Al NapierProfessor of Management Director, Center on the Management of Information Technology Area Coordinator, Entrepreneurship

In 1998, 14 years after he began teaching at the Jones Graduate School, Al Napier had the idea to begin each semester with every student’s name memorized. “I would go into the classroom, ask them to put away their tent cards, and then call every one of them by their first name.”

And he’s done it ever since. “The minute I do that,” he says, “It changes the atmosphere in the classroom. They realize that I know who they are, that I care about them, and that I expect them to be prepared for class.”

Recipient of a 2007 and 2010 Jones School Excellence Award in Teaching and winner of the 2008 Acton Award, a national honor for excellence in entrepreneurship education, the humble and still-active entrepreneur

insists he’s one of the few people in the world who get paid to have fun. “My favorite part about teaching is seeing a student’s excitement when they realize they

could create something of their own — and not have to be tied to a big corporation.”

At the age of 26, with a BA, MBA and PhD all from University of Texas at Austin, Al went to work for Conoco for eight years and then before joining the Jones School, he started and owned a highly successful computer consulting, training and book publishing company that he eventually sold to his business partner after 20 years of operation.

Today he says of his teaching career, “I enjoy having alumni back in class and treating their experiences like a teaching case. They lecture to students who are sitting in the very same seats they sat in. I’m inspired by having a positive impact on people and showing students what they can do and how they can succeed.”

The Jones School’s faculty maintains an important balance between teaching and research. The school’s instructors are either academics with significant business or consulting experience or business executives with significant classroom experience who teach specialized elective courses.

In every course, you’ll have an unparalleled opportunity to work one-on-one with an accessible, involved, and energetic member of the faculty, who believes that current industry knowledge is as critical as textbooks to your education.

Depending on what’s most appropriate for each course, Jones School instructors utilize multiple instructional methods to enhance your learning process—case-method study, analytical and quantitative approaches, lectures and discussions, oral and written reports, theoretical studies, management simulation games, individual study, and teamwork.

Perhaps the most remarkable quality of the Jones School faculty are their open doors. This atmosphere of accessibility pervades classrooms, offices and social gatherings. The faculty are here to teach, research, lead and connect with the students.

Prashant Kale drills down during a case discussion.

Prashant KaleAssociate Professor of Strategic Management

Prashant Kale believes that prospective students should look for the whole learning environment at a school. “I tell my students that the two years you spend here you’re really trying to build a jigsaw puzzle and each course that you complete is really just a piece of the puzzle. So in my

course, let’s try to connect the pieces to build the whole puzzle. I consistently drive that point.”

A member of the faculty since 2007, Prashant received the 2009 Rice MBA for Professionals program Teaching Award for Excellence and 2010 Rice MBA Full-Time program Teaching Award for Excellence. “You have to enjoy teaching,” he says. “There is a certain amount of energy that automatically comes into the classroom when you like what you do.”

Prashant knew he wanted to teach since he was young. His mother was an elementary school teacher, and he always believed his dream job would be to teach math to second graders. However, while earning his MBA, he realized there was a way to combine his love of teaching and his love of business — teach at a business school.

He didn’t apply to a PhD program immediately, though. “I felt if I were to teach business, I also needed to work in the world of business so that I better understood it.” He worked seven years before attending The Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania for his PhD. After seven years teaching at the Ross School of Business at University of Michigan, the opportunity to grow brought him to Rice.

Prashant found the vibrancy of Houston and the positive environment at the Jones School very attractive. “The Jones School has grown significantly in the last three or four years and at the same time the bar has been set higher as our faculty has increased and that’s always good for a school. The higher the bar, the stronger everyone becomes.”

Professor Kale teaches students to think about situations and problems in a comprehensive way. As a consultant, defining the problem is 90 percent of the job. The skills I learned in Professor Kale’s class, specifically the ways of analyzing the symptoms of a problem, are going to be invaluable in my career. SPORTS AND BUSINESS LECTURE SERIES

Highlighting former Rice athletes who have successfully transitioned into business careers, the Rice Sports & Business Series opens its second season with a panel of alumni athletes discussing Athletics and Business, a Long-Term Win.

Moderated by Charlie Pallilo, SportsTalk 790 radio host, this collaboration between Rice Athletics and the Jones Graduate School of Business brings together former Rice athletes Lynn Elsenhans ‘78, Chairman and CEO of Sunoco, Inc.; Sam Reed ‘70, Chairman and CEO of TreeHouse Foods, Inc.; and Jay Collins ‘68 and ‘69 , President, CEO, and director of Oceaneering International, Inc.

This call to conversation examines the unique relationship between sports and business, including how our learned skills transition with us into the working world. From becoming leaders on the playing field to understanding wins and losses, these characteristics contribute to the way in which students develop into professionals and executives after they leave Rice.

Lecture SeriesThe Jones Graduate School offers two different lecture series that bring influential national business people and thought leaders to campus throughout the year. MBA candidates are invited and encouraged to attend these lectures. There is no cost to students to attend Dean’s Lecture Series or Executive Lecture Series events. Students interested in planning and participating in these events can join the Dean’s Lecture Series student club to recruit potential speakers and organize future events.

Partios We offer weekly parties on the patio (Partios), which are social gatherings in the Woodson Courtyard. It’s a comfortable setting for students, faculty, and staff to relax and mingle at an event sponsored by companies recruiting or establishing relationships with the Jones Graduate School and its students. Some of the organizations that have sponsored Partios include: Ernst and Young, El Paso Corporation, ExxonMobil, Kerdock Consulting, Cooper Industries, Chevron and FMC Technologies.

Baker Institute Rice MBA candidates are fortunate to have the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy right beside McNair Hall. The Baker Institute has established itself as one of the leading nonpartisan public policy think tanks in the country since its inception in 1993. In conjunction with its more than 20 programs — including its research, lecture series, events and special projects — the institute attracts many domestic and foreign leaders who provide their views and insights on key issues. Students have the opportunity to attend many of these events.

Networking means different things to different people. For Rice MBAs it means participating. Whether you network to make new friends, find a new job, develop your career or simply broaden your professional horizons, engagement is the key. Below are some of the opportunities for Rice MBAs to refine their networking skills, make connections and cultivate relationships.

Jones School students gather at the NSHMBA Conference to discuss career opportunities.

Last fall I attended the National Black MBA Conference and was impressed by the large number of companies and students in attendance. The conference gave me the opportunity to network with other MBA students from around the country and global business professionals. I am looking forward to my summer internship with GE and am eager to apply the business

fundamentals I have learned during my first year at the Jones School in a professional setting.Justin Straughter, Rice MBA Class of 2012

Student ConferencesAttending conferences is a great way to network, look for new career opportunities and internships, and educate yourself on your options. All students are encouraged to attend any conferences.

To qualify as one of the nation’s top MBA programs, business excellence must refer to concepts taught in the classroom and practiced outside of it. Rice MBA students have the opportunity to experience critical links between the skills they’re learning and how to execute them in a professional environment. Every competitive advantage counts in today’s dynamic global economy. The Jones Graduate School delivers.

WHAT WILL YOU EXPERIENCE? BUSINESS EXCELLENCE

The Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship The Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship is Rice University’s nationally-recognized initiative devoted to the support of technology commercialization, entrepreneurship education, and the launch of technology companies. Unique among many entrepreneurship centers, it was formed as a strategic alliance of three schools: the George R. Brown School of Engineering, the Wiess School of Natural Sciences and the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business.

• To be a catalyst for Houston’s development as a leading center for technology and entrepreneurship in the United States;

• To support technology commercialization and the launch of new technology-based ventures in Houston and Texas;

• To focus on energy, life science, information technology, nanotechnology, engineering, and materials science.

Since its inception in 1999, the Rice Alliance has assisted in the launch of more than 250 start-ups that have raised more than half-a-billion dollars in early stage capital. More than 1,000 companies have presented at the 125-plus programs hosted by the Rice Alliance.

Rice University Business Plan CompetitionThe Rice Business Plan Competition -- the world’s richest and largest -- is hosted and organized by the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship, which is Rice University’s flagship initiative devoted to the support of entrepreneurship. The competition has grown from nine teams competing for $10,000 in prize money in 2001 to 42 teams from around the world competing for more than $1.3 million in cash and prizes.

Based on their executive summaries, 42 teams were chosen from across the globe to deliver their new technology business plans in six different categories: life sciences, information technology, energy, green tech, social, and other technologies. All teams presented 15-minute business plans and competed in the elevator pitch competition.

In 2011, applications increased more than 20 percent from the previous year. More than 100 corporate and private sponsors support the business plan competition. Venture capitalists and other investors from around the country volunteer their time to judge the competition, with the majority of the 250-plus judges coming from the investment sector. One hundred and twenty past competitors have gone on to successfully launch their business and are still in business today, raising in excess of $337 million in funding and employing more than 600 people.

Case CompetitionsRice MBAs know how to execute under tight deadlines. Nothing quite demonstrates this as clearly as their consistent success in external case competitions, including some of the most highly regarded international case competitions. During a competition, teams of students have a short time — sometimes as little as 24 hours — to develop a strategic solution to a problem, analyze unanticipated issues, and present a solution to a team of expert judges, usually from industries related to the case at hand. Add to this the competitive pressure of facing off against the best and brightest from many of the other top MBA programs from around the country, and you can understand the intense value that is created from participating in one of these competitions.

Our students have competed against top-ranked international and U.S. business schools in subject areas such as marketing, strategy, finance, energy, real estate, and business plans — and have been successful in all instances. Rice MBAs emerge from case competitions with a deeper understanding of both strengths and weaknesses in their analytical and presentation skills, as well as a profound appreciation of team dynamics (and hopefully a little extra spending money in their pockets). There is truly no better way to learn than “learning by doing.”

As a full-time student at the Jones School, Allison Lami ’10 and her Rebellion Photonics team won first place at the mai Bangkok Business Plan Challenge and second place at the Rice Business Plan Competition, earning over $125,000 in prizes. A year later, as CEO, she credits her experience at the Jones School with giving her the business knowledge to be successful.

“I always knew I wanted to start a business. With my background in physics and

nanotechnology I thought the Rice curriculum was the perfect fit, especially since the Jones School has such strong relationships with the Houston Technology Center and Rice Alliance.”

Allison’s technical experience gave her the background to understand the technology, but her MBA experience shaped her into a CEO. “The knowledge I gained through my courses is absolutely vital to running a business. On at least a weekly basis, I reflect on what I learned in my accounting, finance, negotiations, and communications courses. I can now manage my business’ pro-forma financial statements and confidently negotiate directly with presidents of other companies to attract the required investment.”

Invented at Rice University in 2009, Rebellion Photonics’ patent-pending technology is essentially a video camera that ‘sees’ chemicals and has a wide variety of applications, from cancer research to gas leak detection on rigs. Currently approved for over $1.7 million investment and grant funding Rebellion Photonics finished their first product line, the Arrow, and is currently in late-stage negotiations on an exclusive sales agreement with a Fortune 500 company. Looking ahead to 2012, Allison hopes to secure an additional $15 million in second-round financing. With five full-time and three part-time employees, Rebellion Photonics has also hired two interns from Rice. To learn more about their technology visit www.rebellionphotonics.com.

A WINNING SEASON

Allison LamiRice MBA Class of 2010CEO, Rebellion Photonics

Winning Spirit: Rice MBAs Participate in Charitable Fundraising Rice MBAs are known for working hard and playing hard, especially when it comes to benefiting important causes. In April 2011, a team of 12 Rice MBAs competed with other top business schools at the Duke MBA Games, a weekend of fun events that benefits Special Olympics North Carolina. The back-to-back winning Rice MBA team raised record-breaking funds this season, which were collected through t-shirt sales and general donations. Between the dizzy bat competition, trivia challenge, and tug of war, the Rice MBA team enjoyed meeting and networking with MBAs from other schools.

Board FellowsThe Jones School Board Fellows Program matches Rice MBA candidates with Houston nonprofit organizations to serve as non-voting board members. Started in 1997 at Stanford by students, board fellows programs have a proven model of success, not only at Stanford, but also Harvard, Tuck (Dartmouth), Kellogg (Northwestern), and Haas (UC Berkeley).

Both students and organizations benefit from the Board Fellows program: MBA candidates develop valuable leadership skills and experience working in the nonprofit sector, while organizations gain access to the ideas and energy of future business leaders and establish long-term relationships with the Jones School of Business.

The Jones School program will kick off its fourth year this fall. In 2011, we paired 27 new students from the Full-Time, Professionals and Executives programs with a variety of non-profit organizations, including:

Robyn O’BrienRice MBA Class of 1998

Critically-acclaimed author, activist, researcher and mother of four, Robyn O’Brien has leveraged her experience as a food industry analyst to uncover how one of life’s most basic activities — eating — has become a risk to our health. Robyn launched AllergyKids, an organization to protect the 1 in 3 American children that now has autism, allergies, ADHD or asthma, on Mothers’ Day in May 2006. Three years later she published The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food is Making Us Sick and What We Can Do About It (Random House). She has appeared on CNN, Good Morning America, the CBS Early Show and Evening News, FOX, ABC Money Matters and at the April 2011 TEDx Mile High conference in Denver.

Before moving to Colorado in 2000, Robyn worked as an equity analyst for AIM Investments in Houston, Texas where her team managed $20 billion in assets and today leverages that experience giving green presentations to Fortune 500 companies.

Prior to pursuing her Rice MBA on a full scholarship and graduating as the top woman in her class, Robyn worked in advertising and marketing where she was responsible for budget allocation, execution and management of multi-million dollar, regional and national advertising programs. She received her BA from Washington and Lee University, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude, and was a Fulbright Fellow in Paris, France.

How can joining a student club impact your life and career? Organizing student clubs and holding key leadership roles within them gives Jones School students a chance to learn more about various professions and to improve their skills. These clubs and organizations sponsor guest speakers, visit area businesses, and take on special projects. Equally important, however, is the opportunity to apply membership in a club to a real-world career path.

“As a club leader, I was able to attend all of the events the entrepreneurship club sponsors around campus for students and local business leaders. This exposure has made me a more well-rounded entrepreneur and has been an invaluable learning experience. Due to my club experience, combined with the curriculum at the Jones School, I now feel that I have the tools to launch a successful business.” Simon Erickson, Rice MBA Class of 2011, Former President, Entrepreneurship Club Finance Associate, Waste Management

“I believe that involvement in a school club is the best way for students to connect closely with the professional world while in school. My role as an officer with the energy club had a significant impact on my professional development. I even had the opportunity to speak directly with many high-level executives in the energy industry at club-sponsored events, and I developed closer relationships with my classmates and Jones School alumni.” Mark Gandin, Rice MBA Class of 2011, Former President, Energy Club Commercial Skills MBA Development Program, Chevron

“Leading one of Rice’s largest and most involved clubs, NAWMBA, was an honor and highlight of my MBA experience. This role further developed my leadership skills, and I met incredible women from all facets of life through our numerous events. My favorite NAWMBA event this year was the 11th Annual Women in Leadership Conference held at Rice University. Women from throughout the Houston business community attended this event and I was extremely impressed by the caliber of speakers and panelists that the student led leadership team compiled.” Annie Bradbury, Rice MBA Class of 2011, Former President, NAWMBA Assistant Vice President, Amegy Bank

Diversity has many faces: race, ethnicity, religion, creed, culture, gender, age, nationality, socioeconomic background. Here at the Jones School, diversity goes beyond the traditional definition of race and gender. We define diversity as embracing and encouraging a community of unique individuals. By bringing together people with diverse backgrounds and a variety of experiences, we are able to create a unique learning environment that leads to actionable ideas in the classroom which then translates to a more productive and innovative global workforce.

WHAT WILL YOU EXPERIENCE? DIVERSITY

Diversity Inside the ClassroomThe Rice MBA programs take full advantage of our diverse community of students. Although the professors utilize many teaching methods, the team-based learning approach fully encourages animated discussions, innovative solutions and global perspectives. The result is a learning environment that merges unique work experiences, various cultural backgrounds and different life perspectives. Diversity in the classroom opens the doors for the future leaders of this world.

Diversity Outside the Classroom We believe that displays of diversity should not be limited to the classroom. Rice MBA professors and staff have an open-door policy that truly creates a sense of community. The school hosts a vast array of guest speakers and networking events; weekly company-sponsored “Partios,” which are social gatherings in the Woodson Courtyard; and club-sponsored events to encourage the various groups to interact outside of the classroom. International Partio, one of the most popular social events, celebrates the diverse cultures that make up the Jones Graduate School community. Organized by students, the festival serves authentic cuisine and highlights entertainment from around the world.

Preview Weekends As the leading business school in Houston, the Jones School must reflect the city’s diverse business community. It is imperative to have students from all backgrounds who enhance the diversity of thought necessary during a time that calls for global thought leaders.

Diversity Preview Weekend and Women’s Preview Weekend are two-day events that offer prospective students a detailed look at the Rice MBA programs.

“Of last year’s attendees,” said Melissa Blakeslee, Rice MBA Director of Admissions, “Twenty-one percent are now Rice MBA students.”

Activities for preview weekend programs may include an alumni panel, a student panel, a case simulation and networking workshop led by Jones School faculty, presentations by the school’s Career Management Center and Admissions department as well as time allotments for socializing, networking and interviewing.

It was at the Women’s Preview Weekend that I learned just how committed the Jones School is to diversity. Listening to current students, alumnae, professors, and faculty speak about the importance of female leaders at the school, I realized Rice was the place for me. Learning that the National Association of Women MBAs is headquartered there and the executive director, Tonya Olpin, is herself an alumna, sealed the deal. I had found the business school for me. While I was applying to MBA programs, I chose to attend Diversity Preview Weekend for the opportunity to learn more about the Rice MBA coursework and Rice’s commitment to diversity. Throughout the weekend I was able to meet students, alumni, faculty, and staff and learn more about their personal experiences at the Jones School. HOUSTON NUMBER ONE!

According to an examination by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Houston offers the strongest purchasing power for living and doing business among an international list of 26 cities. The 2011 study says Houston offers the best value for the money, based on several key factors of doing business including cost, transportation, economic clout, ease of doing business, livability and intellectual capital and innovation.

HOUSTON, TEXASThe fourth-largest city in the United States, Houston has a thriving business community and is a major corporate center. It boasts 29 Fortune 500 company headquarters and is home to the Texas Medical Center, the world’s largest center for medical research, education, and patient care. NASA’s Johnson Space Center is also located here.

Houston has lush vegetation and a climate that makes outdoor activities possible year-round. With 650 parks and open areas, including 130 golf courses, the city has something for everyone. The 445-acre Hermann Park directly adjacent to Rice accommodates the Houston Zoo, jogging trails, Miller Outdoor Theater and a public golf course.

Houston is one of only six American cities with resident professional companies in all four major performing arts: ballet, opera, theater, and symphony and second only to

New York City in the number of theater seats (10,000) in a concentrated downtown area. Houstonians support more than 500 cultural, visual, and performing arts organizations; 75 art galleries; and five major museums. There is a thriving and varied live music scene, and the city promotes numerous international, cultural, or arts-based festivals and special events throughout the year.

If sports are what you’re looking for, Houston is proud home to the 2005 National League Champion Houston Astros, the NFL’s Houston Texans, two-time NBA champion Houston Rockets, the two-time MLS champion Dynamo soccer team and AHL Houston Aeros hockey team.

Your spouse or partner won’t have to put his or her career on hold while you attend the Jones School. Houston enjoys a thriving economy with abundant

opportunity for professional growth in many diverse industries, including law, banking, international trade and finance, energy, engineering, design, health care, high technology, biotechnology, space technology, real estate and communications.

Rice University and the Texas Medical Center are in the heart of Houston, Texas.

The development of global thought leaders is built first and foremost on the strength of a school’s community. Relationships between students, faculty, alumni and the business community add tremendous value to the Rice MBA. Unlike many other MBA programs, Rice’s intimate atmosphere and access to an entire network of resources create one of the world’s best MBA environments.

HOW WILL YOU SHAPE THE WORLD? ENGAGE THE HOUSTON BUSINESS COMMUNITY

STUDENTS LEADING THE WAY In addition to being a leader in the energy and health care industries, Houston also boasts a thriving entrepreneurial environment with a strong foundation in finance and real estate. Rice University sits at the center of the city and its close ties to the surrounding business community allow Rice MBA students to easily tap into the assets and innovations of Houston.

Marketing SymposiumAs part of the university’s mission to engage with Houston by providing innovative educational opportunities, the Jones School Marketing Club and marketing faculty host a symposium every year. The collaboration encourages local marketing professionals, MBA students and faculty to exchange ideas and explore cutting-edge research going on in the industry. The symposium offers the Jones School as a venue for its faculty and students to interact with marketing professionals in Houston.

Speakers include: Melissa Mohr, Rice MBA ’10, brand manager for Dr. Pepper Snapple Group; David J. Kenyon, VP of Worldwide Channel Marketing at Advance Micro Devices; Peter Butterfield, former CEO of Kia Motors North America and chairman and CEO of Lakefront Capital; Clinton Clark, Rice MBA ’09, strategic programs manager at Waste Management; Pablo Orta, marketing

manager, fabric and home care at Proctor and Gamble International Operations; and Rajan Sambandam, chief research officer at TRC, a market research firm near Philadelphia.

Rice Energy Finance Summit This student-run event attracts high-level speakers and the Houston business community to campus for the full day conference. More than 200 industry professionals, alumni and students attend the summit, where leaders in energy and finance share their perspectives on current issues and topics regarding the challenges facing both industries.

Highlighted by keynotes and a panel debate, past speakers have included Doug Foshee (Rice MBA ‘92), chairman, president and CEO of El Paso Corporation; Bobby Tudor (’82 Rice), chairman and CEO of Tudor Pickering; Jack Moore, president and CEO of Cameron; Luis Guisti, former Royal Dutch Shell’s board member and senior adviser to the Center for Strategic Studies; Rod Nelson, vice president of communications at Schlumberger; Pierre Breber, vice president and treasurer at Chevron; Janet Clark, executive vice president and CFO of Marathon Oil; Larry Nettles, senior partner at Vinson & Elkins; and Bradley D. Beitler, vice president of technology at FMC Technologies.

Pedaling for Charity The Rice MBA Multisports Club MS150 Team rode from Houston to Austin in two days and raised over $5,500 for MS research. The 150 mile charity bike ride benefited the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. With the enthusiastic support of classmates and professors, the team got up early and took 50-mile rides every Saturday. They trained with the ExxonMobil Energy Rider’s Team throughout the Houston area. Sponsorship from the CMC and Office of Student Services provided team jerseys.

Rice MBA riders in the MS 150 are ready for the road.

sessions with the students, which are closed to media and business professionals, along

with lunch and personal photo sessions. For the second year in a row, with more than

100 business schools making the request, Rice MBAs traveled to Nebraska for the once-

in-a-lifetime experience. Impressed by Buffett’s accessible, energetic manner, students

were also inspired by his advice about principled behavior, passion for what you do,

and selflessness. Buffett said about Jesse H. Jones, “Jesse Jones was a hero of the Great

Depression and I not only read his book decades ago about the Reconstruction Finance

Corporation but more recently have watched a tape about his life that the Foundation

sent me. He is a real American icon.”

The GOOSE Society In 2005, the GOOSE Society of Texas was established as an entrepreneur’s organization — their mission: to study, promote, develop, encourage, practice and celebrate entrepreneurship. The first do-good project of the GOOSE Society, which stands for Grand Order of Successful Entrepreneurs, was the commitment to provide an annual grand prize of $100,000 to the Rice Business Plan Competition, which increased to $125,000 in 2008.

Originally comprised of six members, the GOOSE Society now includes nine: Bob Brockman; Rod Canion; Nancy Chang; Arthur Ciocca; Terry M. Giles; Jack M. Gill, PhD; Michael Holthouse, Leo Linbeck III, and Bill Monteleone. Although Rice University is not alma mater to any of the members, they continue to support and invest in the business school. Members meet once a quarter to look at pitch proposals by mostly tech-centric entrepreneurs.
