Concrete trendsIn the first topic under consideration, Prof.Hillemeier from TU Berlin and Prof. Albertfrom Bochum University devoted their lectu-res to trends pointing the way to the futurefor the concrete and precast industry. Theiremphasis was on a general overview ofcurrent developments in concrete technolo-gy and modern planning with precast. Theyexpounded, for example, on the great use-fulness of the latest software tools in precastproduction facilities.

Concrete technology - day 1 This series of subjects was opened up witha speech by Prof. Mechtcherine about self-compacting, high-strength and fibre-reinfor-ced concretes. In Russia, interest has grown

The ICCX here in Russia is a very impor-tant occasion for me. An event of this typeis unique in Russia – there is nothing else

that can be compared to this conference here. Both the pre-sentations and the exhibition are a super opportunity to fol-low global developments in the concrete industry and beable to learn from them.

appreciably in recent years for modernconcretes, especially self-compacting andhigh-strength types.

Prof. Shtakelberg from Israel complementedthis second block of topics with his presen-tation concerning the possibilities of con-stant monitoring during the strength deve-lopment of concretes. Indeed, with themodern concretes previously introduced byProf. Mechtcherine, these types of monito-ring possibilities are of crucial importance.

Concrete pipesTopics like durability, management andmaintenance of concrete pipe sewagesystems were already in great demand byRussian concrete pipe manufacturers at theICCX 2007 in St. Petersburg. In the interve-ning time, new questions have cropped upabout this range of issues which were ans-wered by another speaker, Dr. Körkemeyer,in two consecutive dissertations. Dr. Körke -meyer also kindly took over the second lec-ture in the series from Dr. Hüttl, who, at short

notice, was unable to travel to Russia forreasons of health. The presentations dealtwith both backups to argumentation drawnfrom practical experience for employingconcrete pipes in sewage construction work

in comparison with competitors’ products, and matter-of-fact application examplesand proposals for solutions.

PrecastPaul Ramsburg from High Concrete, one ofAmerica’s largest precasters, led off into thefourth and final series of topics for the firstday of the event. He related his experiencein the production of various precast ele-ments, including the utilisation of the mostrecent concrete technology. MichaelKhrapko from New Zealand presentedinsights into precast systems in NewZealand and Australia at the close of theday. Some other methods than those

employed in Europe or USA have becomeestablished there which can certainly findapplications in Russia.

Concrete technology - day 2The interesting tone for second day of theevent was set by the remarks from Prof.Beitzel from Trier, Germany. In his lecture,he explained how the homogeneity of amixture, and therefore its quality, can bedetermined and evaluated. This is an impor-tant prerequisite for durable, high-qualityconcretes that have to satisfy customers’demands. Roland Schepers continued witha presentation on steel fibre reinforced con-cretes. Amongst other things, he demonstra-ted how far steel fibre reinforcing can com-plement traditional steel rod reinforcingand, in part, entirely replace the latter.

Concrete productsZero-slump concrete is utilised in manufac-turing concrete pavers. Extremely high stan-dards of quality have to be observed in theproduction of this type of concrete. Themost minor deviations in the water-cementvalue can, for example, have a great effect

This event has been a great experience forme. The information that I have collectedhere is very important for my furtherwork. It was very interesting to get to

know other European and Russian companies. The ICCX is anexcellent opportunity for making new contacts.

    Anna Tarasova, Delta Stroy

The dissertations were very detailed wit-hout being too long. Much useful informa-tion was transferred in a compact form. But the exhibition with all the companies

was also very good. This was the first time I have taken partin the ICCX which, by the way, is really well organised. I amvery satisfied with the entire event.

on concrete block quality. Prof. Mecht -cherine gave many valuable tips in his talkon this topic to practitioners in concrete pro-duction facilities. Colouring zero slump con-cretes in an unerring and reproducible waywas dealt with by Alexander Sibirjakov inhis subsequent contribution. Colouring con-crete products also depends very much oncareful production monitoring as the smal-lest plus or minus deviations in quantity canlead to colours nuances that are conspicuousto the eye and which, under certain circum-stances, will not be accepted by the custo-mer.

Fastening systems Fastening systems are utilised in many as -pects of the production and application ofprecast elements: whether it be in transpor-ting precast, assembly work, or the force-fit-ted fastening of precast elements with oneanother once they have been installed. In their presentations, both Mathias Kintscherand Jens Geffert showed application possi-bilities for modern fastening systems. They

included examples from practice for faste-ning systems with a view to anchoring archi-tec tural façades in additional-leaf wallsystems.

Architectural concrete The final presentation in the two-day confe-rence event was provided by Jürgen Gläsle,editor-in-chief of opus C, an architecturalconcrete periodical. He demonstrated the“nicest” side of concrete in a presentationrich in images from selected architecturalconcrete projects. Those listening, who inthis case fell more into the role of viewers,

received an excellent overview of the pos-sibilities available through modern concreteand precast technology.

The ICCX Russia 2008 trade show exhibi -tion provided detailed insights into modernconcrete technology and related industrialsectors.

    Evening venue with 550 participants

The evening dinner – well-known andappreciated from previous years – at the closeof the first conference day also took placethis year in the Park Inn PulkovskayaConference Hotel. In preceding years, theevening dinner had always been helddirectly in the conference area but the pre-miere of a new venue could be acclaimedat this year’s ICCX Russia 2008. This mea-sure was necessary as the space in the con-ference area was no longer sufficient dueto the increased number of exhibitors. On

top of this, the extremely great demand forthe evening dinner made a new, largervenue unavoidable. This led to the hotel’sown very popular restaurant, the “Pau -laner”, being hired in its entirety for the par-ticipants at the event. This choice struck theright note as was shown by the course ofthe evening and the thoroughly positivecomments the next morning.

A live band catered for agreeable back-ground music during the excellent meal andthereafter for a convivial atmosphere for

the latter part of the evening. Many a visitor“shook a leg” on the dance floor althoughthey, themselves, might not perhaps haveheld it for possible.

It perhaps should not need to be mentionedthat having the arrangement in a restaurantwith the name “Paulaner” (a German bre-wery) makes one forget that the affair istaking place in Russia. The evening mealwas a foray into the delicacies of Bavariancuisine and quite a few guests still rhapso-dised over the beer served – brewed in-house in their private brewery – long afterhaving left St. Petersburg again.

    Tours of Russian precast productionfacilities

The finale on the third and last day of theevent involved the possibility of taking partin one of the two tours of precast producti-on facilities in the vicinity of St. Petersburg.

    Anna Ezhlova, Beham

This type of event has the advantage thatit is not as overcrowded as with normaltrade fairs. It is a whole lot easier to getto talk to the appropriate representative

of different companies. The talks were very good and onlyconcerned current questions – I liked that very much.

550 participants came to the evening venue in the “Paulaner”

Factory tour at DSK Blok…. …and at Gatchinskij SSK

    01b-ICCX_en_14-33.qxp:Layout 1 19.01.2009 14:47 Uhr Seite 32

  • Numerous participants took advantage of this opportunity and twogroups with a total of 120 persons travelled either to the facilities ofDSK Blok or Gatchinskij SSK.

In the factories, generous provision had been made for lookingbehind the scenes in production. Exhaustive explanations on thepart of the factory managers also made this part of the conferenceinto a fascinating experience for all those taking part.

ICCX links the global concrete industry

In summing up, the specialist conference offered a balanced mix -ture from modern concrete research and applied precast technolo-gy. In conjunction with the concurrent trade exhibition, ICCX Russiaonce more functioned as a trail blazer for the construction industryin pointing the direction towards modern production technologies, effective marketing and international cooperation. Due to this sustai-ned interest, the next ICCX Russia will take place from 8th to 10th.December 2009 again in St. Petersburg at Hotel Park InnPulkovskaya.
