Before the storm started on Sunday, August 26, some houses were boarded up and airboats were secured on high ground.

On Sunday evening at 6:48 p.m. the extremely low tide could be seen at the Chokoloskee Causeway bridge.

The water all came back in on Monday, especially after the high tide at 11:45 a.m. as the wind pushed in from the south. Yards and streets were flooded, much to the delight of these ibis.

BLUE MOON August has two full moons: on August 2 and on August 31. The term “Blue Moon” refers to the second full moon in a given month. When people say "once in a blue moon" they are speaking to the rarity of the occurrence of a second moon happening in the same month.

The literal meaning is when the moon appears to a casual observer to be unusually bluish, which is a rare event.

School is now in session and most of us are excited! I'm glad that it's off to a good start. This year we have new staff, teachers, Assistant Principal and Principal! The new teachers in high school are Ms. Roberts,

Mr. Fowell, and Mrs. DuVall. Also, our new principal is Mr. Spano and Assistant Principal is Mr. Ragusa. Volleyball has started and our Principal, Assistant Principal, and some teachers were there cheering us on! We are very glad that they are supporting our school and sports. I have a feeling that this is going to be a great year!

Since I'm 15 years old now, I can get my driving permit! I'm taking Driver's Ed so it can help me with the tests that I need to take. Sooner or later you all will see me driving my dad and mom around town! So excited!!

The volleyball players would appreciate it if everyone would come to our games and cheer us on! We love having fans in the crowd since it makes us pumped up and in it to win it! Please come to support our team!

I would also like to mention that the incredible Neil Armstrong (the first man to walk on the moon) died on August 25, 2012. I am very sad and hope you rest in peace; you are my hero and inspiration to others. You will always be remembered.

A special welcome to Nancy Duvall, our new H. S. Language Arts teacher. Both she and her husband, Stuart, are graduates of the University of Kentucky and love Wildcat basketball! They have two children, Brian Moriarty (who built his own airboat) and Kim who lives in Cincinnati, working as an agent for State Farm. Nancy has four grandchildren and this year took them on trips to Alaska and New York. Nancy states that she has taught English in Collier for “many moons,” is very excited to be at Everglades School and looking forward to the Seafood Festival! Her goal is to encourage the kids to develop a true desire to read which she believes will enrich their lives for years to come. Besides traveling, Nancy’s enjoys reading, gardening, and boating.

'Wavy Leaf' Ligustrum Ligustrum recurvifolium or Ligustrum Japonicum

'Recurvifolium

Ligustrum is a small, hardy semi-evergreen tree that is commonly grown as a shrub for hedges. This particular tree shown above stands alone in my neighbor's yard and is still blooming in late summer. The leaves are dark green and wavy with fragrant white, cream- colored flowers. This tree, as with most of its kind, is about 10 feet high with a width of 6 to 8 feet.

The Ligustrum enjoys full sun or some shade in the warmer climates and is low maintenance, requiring little water after it roots. Although it is not a Florida native, it is a healthy tree for our environment and climate in South Florida.

Raw “Japanese” Salad by Marya Repko

Ingredients: raw zucchini yellow or orange bell pepper scallions garlic preserved or fresh ginger, chopped (optional) sesame oil Teriayki marinade or Maggi sauce

Finely slice the veggies. Sprinkle with sesame oil and Teriyaki marinade (only a little, it is very salty), stir and leave covered in fridge for about an hour to let flavors blend, serve with a steak. It is also ok to save for the next day.

Off the Shelf – Florida Fiction The Kate Kennedy Series

I returned to light reading for my last summer escape. Nora Charles’ books are mysteries set in Broward County in an apartment complex on the beach, just a walk away from the old pier and fish restaurant. Heroine Kate Kennedy is recently-widowed but her husband’s job as a New York City police detective has taught her to ask the right questions when residents are murdered.

The three books I read were Death with an Ocean View (the first in the series), Death Rides the Surf, and Hurricane Homicide.

Author “Nora Charles” is actually Noreen Wald who has also written the “Ghostwriter” mystery books featuring Jake O’Hara. You can learn more at her website www.noreenwald.com.

HOUSEHOLD TIPS Easy Deviled Eggs: Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag, seal, mash, add remainder of

ingredients, keep mashing, mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw the bag away!

Expanding Frosting: When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes for the same price. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving.

Reheating refrigerated bread: To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster. If you don’t have a microwave, sprinkle the bread with drops of water and close tightly in aluminum foil and put in the oven to warm up.

Newspaper weeds away: Plant your plants in the ground; work the nutrients in your soil. Then wet newspapers, put layers around the plants overlapping as you go, cover with mulch, and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers.

To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant: squirrels won't come near it.

Flexible vacuum: To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.

As days get a little shorter and water temperatures drop, large schools of bait

fish start to migrate south. Many of these schools have birds over them and Mackerel, Jacks and even Trout can be caught by casting jigs around them. While you’re out in the Gulf, keep an eye out for schools of “breeder” Redfish moving up and down the coast. At this time of year they look like a copper patch moving just below the surface. Water temperatures remain warm so fish early and late, and in deep areas with lots of current. Snook must be released, but many other fish can be taken for the table. Redfishing has been good this summer and should stay that way through September. Pompano, Bluefish and Cobia can surprise you on any day. Tarpon fishing has been pretty good this summer. Most of these fish are rolling in the deep passes early and late in the day. Permit fishing has been good, but you need calm weather and live crabs to put things in your favor.

Big Cypress National Preserve An Environmental Assessment (EA) was completed in August for a proposal to improve off-road vehicle (ORV) trail heads and construct turn lanes in Big Cypress National Preserve. The EA examined three alternatives in detail, addressed the environmental impacts of each, and identified a preferred alternative. The NPS selected preferred alternative will have no significant effects on the human environment. It is based on the EA and the comments received from the public and agencies during the public review period which concluded on July 5. Ornate Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin macrospilota) Other names: none / Status: FL=species of special concern, IUCN-NT / Length: 5-9 in. (12-23 cm) / Weight: 0.90-1.7 lb (300-1,400 g); the male is much smaller than the female / Life span: unknown / Reproduces: lays up to 3 clutches a year with 6-7 eggs in each clutch / Found: Sarasota Co., Charlotte Co., Lee Co., Collier Co., coastal / JFMAMJJASOND (the ornate diamondback breeds year round).

In all four coastal counties of Southwest Florida the ornate diamondback terrapin spends most of its life in and around the mangroves where it forages on carrion, snails, crabs, and salt-marsh plants. Along the Eastern Seaboard and west to Texas it lives in salt marshes. The terrapin is equipped with a special gland next to its eyes that allows it to secrete excess salt. It has one of the most heavily embossed shell patterns of any turtle and a unique spotted lavender skin. It is also becoming extremely rare. The reason for its demise is simple: it is delicious. Until recently the terrapin was hunted in much of its range for terrapin soup. It has also suffered from coastal development. Its biggest threat today is crab traps, which it enters to feed on the bait, then drowns. There are five subspecies in Florida and two more in its greater range from southern New England to Corpus Christi, Texas. Although these small reptiles can be seen in captivity, where they do well in saltwater aquariums, seeing a terrapin in the wild is nothing short of astonishing. They are shy and elusive turtles, and a terrapin sighting is a special experience for any nature enthusiast.

They sailed all through that Saturday and Sunday with just one Destroyer in attendance, and church Parade on Sunday morning was a memorable occasion. Everyone realized they were still in danger and that the service gained much more significance. By this time they had heard of the calamity which had overtaken the H.M.S. Hood, and saddened all. For one thing the weather began to improve and they began to realize they were more or less past halfway stage of the trip and with the approaching escort from the Navy and could look forward to the docking either on Wednesday or Thursday. It was also on that Sunday they heard that the Bismark had been tackled by a Torpedo from a Swordfish Airplane and had been damaged. The news of Her sinking had come through on the Monday, also on Monday the weather and they had some sunshine and saw a large convoy, homeward bound. On Tuesday they passed some American Warships way out in the Atlantic, Wednesday they were all feeling excited who was going to sight land. On Dawn Thursday as the sun was breaking behind their backs they got their first sight of a blue smudge, could this be just a cloud? Or was it Canada? It was Canada. MUSEUM of the Everglades NEWS A new photographic perspective with Mother Nature is the subject of the Museum of the Everglades’ exhibit entitled “The Everglades and the Goodman’s, Kayla with Dad…” opening September 4 with a reception to meet the artist on Saturday, September 8, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served by the Friends of the Museum of the Everglades. Come meet the Artist, Kayla Goodman (and maybe her Dad).

Kayla, age 12, was introduced to photography three years ago at the age of 9. She would accompany her father on adventures into the Everglades; using her Mom’s point and shoot camera, she got a sense of composition. A year later she entered the Rookery Bay Annual Photography Contest where she won the best in the 18 and under category with her photos of The Lubber Grasshopper (shown right) and Reddish Egret.

The Museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is no admission charge but donations are welcome. For information, phone 695-0008.

Marco Island Historical Society On Tuesday, September 4, archaeologist Matthew Betz will lecture on the Pioneers and Early Historic Development of the Rookery Bay and northern Ten Thousand Island. HAPPY BIRTHDAY COLLIER COUNTY LIBRARY

On September 3, Collier County Public Library will celebrate its 55th anniversary. In 1957 the County Commissioners voted to create a free public library with headquarters in Naples. For 25 years before then, the Women's Club of Naples would collect and lend out books.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT New Exhibits at Jungle Erv’s

As visitors pass through the entrance at the gift shop at Jungle Erv’s on Dupont Island, they are immediately greeted by Red Velvet, Captain Jack Sparrow and several other friendly birds. The Boxwell family (shown here) from England enjoyed their visit to Everglades City with a tour around the boardwalk.

Jungle Erv has lengthened this beautiful boardwalk to include additional walking paths along the thick mangrove trees and extended the area further along the river to “Manatee Point.” Most visitors enjoy the experience of having their photo taken with an alligator and Christopher Stokes is always there to provide them with an educational show.
