consejo.”—Charles Kettering,Inventor americano
Children who have an involved father are more likely to be emotionally secure, more confident, have better social connections and greater career success. They are also less likely to get in trouble at home, school or in the neighborhood. With a little help, most fathers can be well equipped to provide the love and care that children need to blossom and reach their full potential.
In most cases, children thrive when they bond with their father from a young age and know he is there to love them, guide them and help them along life’s journey. Some men think that this will happen naturally once their child is born. But the truth is, parenting — for both moms and dads — takes work. It’s natural that some parents may want or need assistance to help them improve their parenting skills and give their child the best possible start in life.
This guide, compiled by First 5 LA, is intended to help fathers and male role models find the programs in Los Angeles County that can help them do that. In the pages that follow, we’ve outlined and briefly described a variety of organizations, programs and services to assist you along your journey through fatherhood:
• General resources for fathers• Project Fatherhood program information• Resources for young fathers • Resources for fathers facing challenges
Recognizing that parenting makes free time precious, we’ve also included a list of Online Resources. We hope you’ll find these resources helpful. Your child is worth it … and so are you!
About First 5 LAFirst 5 LA oversees the L.A. County allocation of funds from Proposition 10, which added a 50-cent tax on tobacco products sold in California. Funds raised help pay for health care, education and child development programs for children, from the prenatal stage to age 5, and their families. First 5 LA’s mission is to increase the number of young children who are physically and emotionally healthy, safe and ready to learn.

will follow his example, not his advice.”

DADDY TIPBe affectionate,
even if the child is not biologically yours. If you’re
an uncle, grandpa or are raising your partner’s child, you may feel the need to do something extra to encourage bonding. This isn’t necessary. Children respond to
affection and love and your bond will build naturally
over time.
DADDY TIPReading to your child has many benefits. It
builds language skills, helps improve your child’s chances
for academic success and offers a fun way to bond.
