in Support of Creating a Petitioning Service for Associated Students

Whereas: Associated Students, and it’s officials, were made and are elected to, represent and act upon the issues of its constituents; and,

Whereas: Throughout our history, Americans have used petitions as a way to join together around issues they care about.  This petition service brings that uniquely American tradition into the 21st century; and,

Whereas: Associated Students shall seek to improve engagement of UC Santa Barbara Students through a petition site; and,

Whereas: There are a loose network of sites that do not create a welcoming and validating place for the UC Santa Barbara community to converse on important issues; and,

Whereas: Associated Students is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in government. We will work together to ensure the public trust and establish a system of trans-parency, public participation and collaboration. Openness will strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in government;

Therefore let it be further resolved by the 66th Associated Students in the Senate assem-bled: That Associated Students shall support a new platform that gives all students of UC Santa Barbara a way to create and sign petitions on a range of issues affecting our campus and commu-nity; and,

Be it further resolved that: That all petition that gathers enough online signatures, it will be re-viewed by policy experts and receive an official response by the AS Senate; and,

Be it it further be resolved that: To remain transparent, any efforts that AS UC Santa Barbara makes toward this project shall be an open source project available on GitHub. Additionally, API Access gives the community a convenient way to access the information available through this service; and,

Be it further resolved that: This Group Project will initially consist of Senators: Jerel Con-stantino, Austin Hechler, Reilly Hobson, Sasha Bates, and Batsheva Labowe-Stoll.

Be it it further be resolved that: The A.S. Senate shall appropriate funds to ensure the comple-tion of this project.
