Dear Flint Hill Community,

It is with tremendous pride and gratitude that I present to you A Report on Philanthropy 2013-

2014. This was another exceptional year for Flint Hill. Parents, students, alumni, grandparents,

faculty and staff, and trustees all joined together to surpass our fundraising goals to create yet

another record-breaking year.

The Flint Hill Fund, our Annual Fund, remains our school’s number-one fundraising priority. Every

gift supports every student and faculty member each and every day, and ensures that our mission

remains strong. It is the collective support of our entire “school family” that drives Flint Hill

forward and ensures our success.

These are exciting times for our school. As we embark upon our new strategic planning process,

I am constantly reminded about what a truly special place Flint Hill is. The relationships we build,

the balance we create for our students, and the innovation that we practice as an institution are

the hallmarks of what keep Flint Hill a leader in the field of education. At the end of the strategic

planning process, I am certain we will have ambitious goals, but I am confident that, together,

we can achieve them.

Dear Flint Hill Community,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are excited to share this year’s successful results for

philanthropic giving to Flint Hill. In this report you will see the wonderful response we had this

past year to our Flint Hill Fund campaign, as well as those who lead the way with leadership

gifts to the school.

Every year we encourage members of our community to make gifts that are meaningful to

them. We are thrilled that so many of you took that as an opportunity to make gifts in honor of

a beloved teacher, department, or program. This reinforced to the board that Flint Hill’s success

is built on the strong relationships that exist here and that our entire community is committed

to our great school.

This was especially demonstrated in our participation levels from our school leaders: the faculty

and staff, the senior class, the Parents’ Association, and the Board of Trustees, all of whom

reached 100% participation to the Flint Hill Fund. We are grateful to all of these groups for their

leadership and answering the call to action.

Below are some of the notable achievements from the 2013-2014 fiscal year:

• The Flint Hill Fund raised $1,272,111, surpassing its goal by over $72,000.

• 1159 members of the Flint Hill community made a gift to the Flint Hill Fund this year.

• 67% of our parent community and 9% of our alumni community contributed to the

Flint Hill Fund.

• Over $283,000 was raised in a three-week period in response to the trustee challenge

leading up to commencement.

• 78% of the total amount raised for the Flint Hill Fund came from 108 donors making

leadership gifts (gifts of $3,000 or more).

We thank you for your support of the school, and hope that you continue to make Flint Hill

a philanthropic priority. Together, we can make a difference.

Salaries and Benefits: 61.39% Salaries and benefits for all Flint Hill employees.

Financial Aid: 9.94% Need-based financial aid.

Physical Plant: 7.61% Buildings and grounds, capital expenses, repairs and maintenance, utilities, transportation, and vehicle expenses.

Debt Service: 4.70% Principal and interest payments.

Auxiliary Services: 4.69% Includes Special and Summer Programs, the lunch program for both campuses, the School Store, and special events.

Technology: 3.99% Technology equipment, software and hardware license renewals, and telecommunications expenses.

Instructional Budgets: 3.87% Faculty and staff professional development and hiring costs, all Department and Division-related expenses, Athletics, Fine Arts, Library, College Counseling, Learning Center, Counseling.

General and Administrative: 3.81% Headmaster’s Office, Development, Admissions, Marketing & Communications, publication expenses, supplies, postage, and other school administrative costs.

REVENUE

Tuition and Fees: 93.74% Gross tuition income, application fees, curriculum-related fees, transportation fees, and private music lesson fees.

The Flint Hill Fund: 3.33% Unrestricted annual gifts to the school which support the FHS operating budget. The Board of Trustees has designated this as the number-one fundraising priority of the school.

Auxiliary Services: 2.53% Gross income from Summer and Special Programs, Lower and Middle School Lunch program, and the School Store.

Endowment Income: 0.18% Income generated by the endowed funds.

Other Gifts: 0.22% Special gifts from private foundations and individuals restricted for designated school priorities.

Developing Literacy in the ArtsThe arts reflect a fundamental dimension of what makes us human, and Flint Hill believes creative expression is an integral part of a well-rounded education.

We take pride in ensuring that students have a solid understanding of the pillars of artistic

expression through study of visual arts, music, drama and dance. We also offer a deep set

of highly specialized programs, some of which include: print making, sculpture, photography,

video and filmmaking, ballet and jazz dancing, improvisation, playwriting, orchestra, jazz

ensemble, and music theory.

And while these programs can prepare some students to attend art schools or to major in

performing or visual arts at the college level, our goal is to support all students in developing

their aesthetic sensitivity and artistic awareness.

Gifts designated to the Fine Arts Fund help to ensure that all of our students continue to

gain exposure to an education in the arts, and that Flint Hill can continue to provide the

balanced curriculum that our students enjoy.

Beyond the Game Participation in athletics brings many other benefits beyond the promotion of physical health and improved mental cognition, both of which can carry over into other areas of life.

Athletic activity can enhance self-discipline, commitment and persistence in developing skills

that are necessary for success, critical thinking during practice and competition, and resilience

in the face of defeat. Athletics can teach social values that have many applications outside of

sports, such as collaboration and teamwork in overcoming obstacles and sharing leadership

in the face of challenges.

Importantly, participation in athletics can be enjoyable, boost self-esteem and help students

create strong friendships that are often forged through the shared experience of hard work

and mutual support.

At Flint Hill, we believe that athletic activity can foster a healthy attitude towards competition

by teaching that respect for the opposition, officials and traditions of the game are just as

important as winning, and that healthy competition requires an appreciation of the importance

of interdependence.

Gifts designated towards the Athletics Fund enable us to foster an athletic environment

that promotes life skills that will help our students meet the challenges they will face in their

everyday lives.

Celebrating Diverse Learning Styles Not all students learn in the same way. At Flint Hill, we are committed to meeting every student where they are and helping them to discover how they learn best.

For students who need additional support, the Learning Center empowers them to better

understand and benefit from their personal strengths. Our Learning Center helps students

to improve their organizational and time management skills while they collaborate with their

teachers to develop approaches that reflect their individual needs.

Because of Flint Hill’s ability to help students learn in the best way for them, students are

able to take a traditional course of study—which, in many cases, includes college-level

Advanced Placement courses—while drawing on the support of the Learning Center for

strategies that enable their academic success.

To Reach a Better Understanding Thanks to timely, forward-looking planning and the critically important generosity of parents, alumni and other friends of the school, Flint Hill has been able to place itself consistently at the cutting edge of educational technology.

Our goal is not to replace traditional learning tools and teaching methods with digital versions.

Rather, we seek to make selective use of new technology that encourages transformative forms

of teaching and learning and leads to deeper levels of understanding only attainable through its

innovative use.

With the assistance of technology, our students experience education in a completely different

way. Whether taking a Google Earth tour of Islamic architecture in Europe, blogging about

learning journeys or documenting and analyzing landforms with an iPad, the use of digital tools

has allowed our students to have a deeper, more hands-on educational experience.

Transformative Teaching While some classical teaching methods, such as Plato’s dialectics, continue to be powerfully effective, Flint Hill faculty members know that teaching in the 21st century demands new skills for them and for the students they teach.

It calls for teaching that both engages the interests of a broad range of students and elicits

active thinking that goes well beyond careful listening and note-taking. Students must be

inspired to wrestle with new questions, formulate imaginative ideas and critically weigh

supportive evidence.

Traditional means of professional development—attending academic conferences, participating

in on-campus workshops and pursuing advanced degrees—continue to be valuable. But the

skills and information that today’s teachers need require new forms of professional growth that

do not end with completing a course or earning a degree.

This fund helps provide access to innovative tools that facilitate continuous learning and

transformative teaching demands.

BRODY ENDOWED MEMORIAL FUND

Established in 1993, in honor and

from this fund supports a yearly-

THE STEPHEN CASE FOUNDATION ENDOWED FUND FOR TECHNOLOGY

Established in 1998 by Stephen

and Jean Case, this fund was

inspired by the Case’s passion

about the transformative role of

technology in education. The fund

allows the school to preserve its

model technology program.

Gift Drives New GivingOver a three-week period last spring, Flint Hill Trustee Randy Byrnes stepped forward with a challenge for our community.

An active member of the Board of Trustees Development Committee

and a loyal supporter of the school’s fundraising efforts, Randy wanted

to highlight the importance of giving to the Flint Hill Fund and to provide

an incentive to parents. Randy is a firm believer in the importance of

giving back to your community and understands that a strong annual

giving program is vital to any independent school.

“We know that Flint Hill is an excellent school,” Randy said. “One of its hallmarks is that

the Administration and Board of Trustees are constantly thinking about ways to enrich all

aspects of school life. Sometimes (in fact, most times) money is needed to finance soundly

conceived ideas and initiatives such as advancing the independent study opportunities, the

STEM program, the assessment evaluation, advances in curriculum design, faculty professional

development and the like. Initiatives like these are what make the difference between an

excellent school and a great school.”

The challenge was this—every new or increased gift to the Flint Hill Fund would be matched

dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000 thereby increasing the impact of each gift. It worked! During this

period, the Flint Hill Fund received more than $280,000 in new or increased gifts from more

than 230 donors, helping us to again have a record-breaking year. We are grateful to the Byrnes

family for providing this wonderful opportunity to our school, and to our donor community who

rallied around this challenge to ensure that Flint Hill exceeded its fundraising goals.

Leadership Donor ReceptionOn Sept. 12, 2014, more than 120 leadership donors attended the Annual Leadership Donor

Reception hosted by Headmaster John Thomas and Chairman of the Board Skip Coston. We

gathered to celebrate and thank our community of donors who helped Flint Hill to achieve another

record-breaking year, raising over $1,750,000. Those in attendance had the opportunity to hear
