ST JOHN YEARBOOK 2009 1

I am pleased to introduce the St John Yearbook for 2009. Our Yearbook, along with our Annual Report, is a record of our membership and key activities of the past year.

As my wife Susan and I travel around the country, we continue to enjoy seeing the work of St John members. I’m proud to see our members contributing at St John events and also at times when I am attending other public and community engagements.

We see that our organisation, and the contribution we make, continues to grow. This valuable work is made possible not only by the efforts of those listed in this publication but by our entire membership.

My thanks go to all St John members, both paid and volunteer, for everything each of you is doing for the Order of St John and for your communities. May God bless you as you continue to care for our communities and for one another.

No reira, téná koutou, téná koutou, kia ora, kia kaha, téná koutou katoa.

His Excellency The Hon Sir Anand Satyanand GNZM QSO KStJ St John Prior and Governor-General of New Zealand

The Order of St John is active and contributing hugely in our communities.”

His Excellency The Hon Sir Anand Satyanand | Prior

St John members are seen at many public gatherings, including on the sideline at rugby matches. Events members are pictured here at an international test match played at Carisbrook Stadium in Dunedin.

Greetings in the languages of the realm of New Zealand – greetings, kia ora, kia orana, fakalofa lahi atu, taloha ni.

We’ve seen another year of great progress and numerous achievements for the Order of St John in New Zealand.

Garry Wilson succeeded Rob Fenwick as Chancellor on 1 March 2009. Garry brings a wealth of experience from the health, charitable, private and business sectors. I wish to thank Rob for his tremendous contribution during his time as Chancellor of St John and welcome Garry to this important role.

As Prior I have the privilege of making various presentations each year in recognition of the many achievements of our members. This Yearbook includes details of the many members who received awards, including the Grand Prior’s Award, Priory Votes of Thanks, long service awards and admission to or promotion within the Order of St John.

The Order of St John is active and contributing hugely in our communities.

2 rEpOrT Of THE CHANCELLOr AND CHiEf EXECUTiVE

We have experienced growth in many of our core activities this year, introducing service improvements and a range of new initiatives.”

Jaimes Wood | Chief Executive

Building a brighter future together

The services we provide are more critical and relevant than ever before. Pressure on health services is mounting; the population is growing and demand for ambulance services continues to rise. We are meeting these challenges head on with programmes that are building community resilience and helping to relieve health sector pressure points.

OuR YEAR IN FOcuSWe have had another tremendously productive and satisfying year, in which our 15,500 members worked together to help enhance the health and well-being of New Zealanders.

Our people touch the lives of thousands of people every year, as they are out in the community caring for people 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to the very best of their abilities.

LEAdING THE wAYThe year has seen some significant developments in the ambulance sector, and St John is pleased to be playing a leadership role in helping drive innovation and greater linkages with the wider health sector.

We hosted the announcement by the Minister of Health, Hon. Tony Ryall, of targeted Government funding for specific Ambulance sector initiatives in June 2009.

We welcomed the Government move to finalise the New Zealand Ambulance Service Strategy this year. We are pleased most of our contributions were included in the Strategy and look forward to continuing to work with the Government on delivery.

The newly formed National Ambulance Sector Office (NASO), a joint venture between ACC and the Ministry of Health, will provide the sector with a single point to engage with the Crown on direction and funding, while we continue to develop new sustainable fundraising streams.

GENTLE STEpS IN A TOuGH EcONOMIc ENvIRONMENTAs a charity relying on public support and funds to help provide our essential services, we take a cautious approach in the management of our funds. The current recessionary economic environment is a challenging one and we remain ever vigilant in managing our expenditure.

With a nationally consistent approach to our financial planning, our efforts are targeted on reducing costs, where sensible, and increasing revenue where we can. Progressing important projects and activities to move our organisation forward has continued.

Public support through fundraising has always been crucial to us. As a charity with a volunteer ethos, we rely on the public to come on board and support our work. The St John Appeal this year was, we believe, better and brighter than ever before. The Flash a Light for St John theme achieved good engagement with the public and is a theme we plan to build on each year.

SERvIcE dEvELOpMENT A KEY FAcTORWe have experienced growth in many of our core activities this year, introducing service improvements and a range of new initiatives.

Ambulance demand remains high and growing, particularly for emergency callouts. Our Acute Demand Co-ordination Service in Christchurch, where we help co-ordinate the provision of in-home care to patients, is showing great promise as a new model in primary healthcare.

We’ve continued our focus on growing our activities in first aid training, defibrillator placements and telecare, which is founded on St John Lifelink medical alarms. These initiatives improve community well-being while also generating vital funding to support our Ambulance services and other charitable programmes.

garry Wilson | Chancellor

The year has seen some significant developments in the ambulance sector, and St John is pleased to be playing a leadership role.”

We’re extremely proud of our community programmes. We now have more than 900 Caring Caller clients - mainly elderly or isolated people - who are partnered with a trained volunteer and receive a daily call to check all is okay and a reminder to take medication if needed.

More than 5,500 people are involved in St John Youth, up from 4,500 last year. This programme teaches young people skills and leadership qualities and develops a core of community members trained in first aid, fitting our goal of at least one trained first aider in every home.

Independent research commissioned this year shows the programme is highly beneficial, not only to our young members but also to parents, family, schools and the wider community.

Quantifying the contribution of our Youth programme to New Zealand society shows the value of volunteer time alone is conservatively estimated as at least $3 million a year. This is in addition to the estimated $35 million a year given in time by our volunteer ambulance officers, and the substantial contributions made by our volunteers in many other roles.

RELATIONSHIpS IMpORTANTFostering positive and successful partnerships is a priority for us. We celebrated the first anniversary of our community partnership with ASB in June 2009.

Working together with ASB we have taught CPR free to more than 7,000 New Zealanders and have begun to place defibrillators in ASB branches. ASB support is enabling us to meaningfully increase our investment in clinical education, a prime focus area for us, and we have more community initiatives planned with ASB.

We were fortunate to establish a number of new relationships this past year. Ryman Healthcare selected St John as its national charity for a year, with a commitment to host a range of fundraising activities for us. We are also collaborating with Access Homehealth on projects that will enhance the complementary services of both parties.

St John is supporting the Stroke Foundation in a National Blood Pressure Awareness Campaign, aimed at reducing the risk of stroke. The campaign includes free blood pressure checks at community venues nationwide. This is a community approach to a major health issue and a model on which future health initiatives can be built.

LOOKING AHEAdOur focus for the year ahead is to continue improving our services, strengthen and secure additional sustainable funding streams, employ more frontline ambulance officers and further develop our Clinical Excellence programme.

THANK YOuWe look forward to celebrating the 125th anniversary of St John in New Zealand throughout 2010. We have a range of activities planned nationwide to celebrate this significant milestone and involving the community.

Several key events will be held in Christchurch, where St John started in New Zealand. These include hosting an international St John Grand Council meeting and international St John Youth Festival.

As we prepare to celebrate in partnership with communities, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who work with us and help us deliver such vital services to the people of New Zealand.

Every day members of our Eye Hospital team commit to improving the health and lives of people in dire need.”

HOSpiTALLEr’S rEpOrT

St John members in New Zealand have continued to give generously to our Eye Hospital in Jerusalem over the year, with innovative and generous giving inspiring others.

The organisation and membership continue to provide significant financial support for the Eye Hospital. Overall support from New Zealand of $NZ150,000 a year is made up of oblations, donations and targeted fundraising. I am greatly heartened by this response to the needs of our Hospital family and thank you all.

During the year, Lord Vestey retired as Eye Hospital Board Chair and Anthony Chignell as Order of St John Hospitaller. John Talbot of the United Kingdom was appointed to both roles. In Jerusalem, Matron Jacqueline Jaidy MBE will retire in September 2009. Her replacement, Ahmad Ma’ali, is currently head of the School of Nursing.

Services continue at the Eye Hospital in East Jerusalem and at the static clinics in Hebron, Anabta and Gaza while outreach continues to visit two rural communities daily, four days per week. Our clinics have been strengthened in response to access problems, due to unpredictable checkpoints and extension of the separation wall.

The Gaza clinic was closed temporarily and staff were profoundly affected by the shock of war – some with loss of homes. While the clinic wasn’t damaged, its environment and clinical standards are unacceptable, with overcrowding and a high theatre infection rate. Funding to improve the facility has been identified. This project will progress, politics permitting, over the next three years.

High rates of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and blindness caused by cataracts continue to affect the population. Partnering with other agencies, reducing the cost of treatment and establishing screening programmes are strategies that will make a difference in addressing these conditions.

The Hospital Board reports significant impact from the international financial downturn. In particular, movement in the strong Israeli currency, the Shekel, has resulted in over 10% loss of income.

Every day members of our Eye Hospital team commit to improving the health and lives of people in dire need. Their work, in a very real way, is reflecting the spirit and ethos of St John. May we collectively strengthen our commitment to support their endeavours.

We want all members to be aware that chaplaincy is available to them and their families.”

priOrY DEAN’S rEpOrT

St John enters our 125th anniversary year in New Zealand with a chaplaincy that has been restructured to meet the needs of a diverse modern organisation.

The ceremonial and worship-based role of Chaplains continues but the main focus of Chaplains is now the provision of support to staff and their families, from within St John.

Our chaplaincy is operating in a social context our founders would never have imagined, and St John is growing bigger and more diverse.

We want all members to be aware that chaplaincy is available to them and their families. Our operations members, community care members, sales and administration members and any other members may need, at some time, to have a listening ear or confidential counsel from within St John.

I want to thank our Principal Chaplain, Reverend Bob Tremewan, and the regional Chaplains for their work as we expand towards more active chaplaincy. The readiness of busy people to take up these volunteer appointments as chaplains is another sign of the wider community’s `ownership´ of St John and our activities.

Fifteen local Chaplains attended the second Regional Chaplains’ Conference held in Christchurch in January 2009. These annual gatherings (held in the North and South Islands in alternate years) provide an opportunity for team building and the integration of new Chaplains who we appoint within St John.

One highlight for me this year was taking the opportunity to join a regional workshop for peer support personnel from both St John and the Fire Service. The workshop was organised by a St John Rural Support Officer.

At this workshop I listened to presentations from experienced national, regional and local people. We reflected together and participated in team building exercises. I came away from the workshop with greater appreciation and admiration for what people can do when they work together and assist each other.

There is much St John material throughout New Zealand that we need to preserve and document in a suitable way.”

LiBrAriAN’S rEpOrT

One of the interesting challenges St John continues to face is how to preserve our heritage material. We have focused on this in the last year.

The nature of our organisation, our history and our role in the community means we have valuable and irreplaceable social records of interest to our members and the public.

Our volunteers, working with St John archives in Auckland and Christchurch, are doing a wonderful job of documenting and storing the material they have been given. Our archives are available for anyone to access when researching St John.

There is much St John material throughout New Zealand that we need to preserve and document in a suitable way. We want to be sure that when St John is being researched and written about in the future, a rich source of material is able to be located and made available.

Historian and author Graeme Hunt certainly uncovered many treasures during his research for our new history of St John in New Zealand. Graeme has provided valuable advice on preserving our history.

The book, First to Care: 125 Years of the Order of St John in New Zealand, is a special project to help celebrate our 125th anniversary. It will be launched and available before Christmas and as part of our 125 years celebrations in 2010.

Graeme has made sure the history reflects very recent changes, including the appointment of Garry Wilson as Chancellor and the most up-to-date roll of the Order of St John in New Zealand.

We would like to thank the members of the Historical Advisory Committee, Peter Wood, Simon Rae and Russell Martin, who helped Graeme by providing valuable feedback and proofreading throughout this project. We believe the book will be a valuable record of the tremendous contribution of our members to New Zealand communities over the past 125 years.

We want to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone who has received St John awards and honours this year.”

murray Jones | Registrar

Each year members are admitted to or promoted in the Order of St John at an Investiture Service. This service was held at the Auckland Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.

rEgiSTrAr’S rEpOrT

The Roll of the Priory in New Zealand currently stands at 1,625 members throughout the country who have been honoured for their huge contribution to New Zealand communities.

The citation for each individual admitted or promoted in the Order of St John tells a story of individual contribution and commitment to St John. The many thousands of hours of service given by our members every year is simply incredible.

We want to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone who has received St John awards and honours this year. Thank you all for the work you do, and will continue to do, for the Order of St John in New Zealand.

The St John Honours system has been in existence since before the time of the Order’s Charter of 1888. It was founded on the principle that any person may nominate another for consideration for a St John honour.

Admission to, or promotion within, the Order of St John recognises an individual’s achievement, successful fulfilment of responsibilities or notable and selfless service.

The overriding principle is that a person is admitted or promoted in the Order of St John because of her or his merit.

This criteria is very important for those considering forwarding a name for admission or promotion.

An important project completed in the last year is to make sure that all details about each member listed in the Roll of the Priory of New Zealand is up-to-date and correct. We have been able to add much new information and I believe the Roll has never been in more accurate shape. My thanks to the small team who have assisted with this project.

Finally, our thanks to all members on the Roll who pay their annual Oblation. This is one of the ways we are able to financially support our charitable work through the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem. The Hospitaller’s Report notes some of the many Hospital projects that have benefited from our financial support.

Service awards are recognition of the tremendous efforts of our members.

SErViCE mEDALS AND BArS

The Service medal of the Order of St John is unique as it is the only medal still issued that retains the image of Queen Victoria and the only one which has her facing to the right. it was first awarded in New Zealand in 1908. Queen Victoria established the Order as a royal Order of Chivalry with the royal Charter of 1888.

The Service Medal is awarded for efficient service after 12 years, with a Bar to the Medal available for every subsequent five years of service. The Gilt Laurel Leaf was instituted in 2004 and is awarded after 52 years of service.

The Service Medal is accorded a place in the New Zealand Order of Wear: Orders, Decorations and Medals, approved by The Queen.

Many years of service given by members are recognised in the Awards listed below. Congratulations to all recipients and our thanks for the contribution you continue to make to St John and your communities.
